I hated Mother of Tears, not because it was "too much," but because it was an absolutely awful movie. Bad acting, cheesy effects, and *SPOILER* they beat the Third Mother by, uh, burning a fucking shirt? What the fuck was that about? At the end, when Asia and that guy are cracking up, I didn't see it as part of the film, I saw it as them laughing that they were talked into being part of it. *END SPOILER*

Argento did some great stuff, Deep Red, Suspiria, Tenebre, even Inferno. But Mother of Tears was ass.

Argento still does not get the respect he deserves, and, more importantly, doesn't get the audience he deserves. That said, I was in Florence when Terza madre premiered, but didn't attend, alas.

I own the complete print of Phenomena on DVD. It was from Germany or something like that, and I had to pay 40 something bucks for it. Well worth it, believe you me. MOT was alright but Inferno will always be my favorite of the three. The soundtrack by Keith Emerson is one of the finest horror scores ever.

This could be brilliant. At last he's working with a really good actor. He was never too concerned with performances, but he's still managed to make some great films. The Bird with the Crystal Plummage, Deep Red and Tenebre are my favourites.
MOTHER OF TEARS is a fun, gory ride!

I really enjoyed the film! Sure,it is different from SUSPIRIAN and INFERNO but these films were made in the 70's,a very different era! MOTHER OF TEARS is a more modern, tongue in cheek version of "SUSPINFERNO"! I liked the murders scenes, the locations, the crazy, extreme atmosphere and this long Steadycam shot near the end in Mater's lair was also really beautiful! Not Argento's best film, but still pretty good.

first: MOT was toss indeed. a bad movie of the week with the total lack of logic Argento talks about but also without any of his redeeming visual flair still looking forward to giallo though but back to my question for mr Beaks: real shame you didn't ask mr Argento whether his 'four flies on grey velvet' will ever see the light of day on DVD? it's a really good film with some incredible set pieces

1 great film, 3 decent ones and a bunch a crap. Oh and a lot of weird-ass hype that NEVER lives up to expectations.

The shop is called "profundo rosso" (Deep Red), of course the title of his most famous film. Worth going to meet the man himself although when i went he was shooting Mother of Tears.
Crystal Plumage opening set piece was GENIUS!

DEEP RED is my favorite, though. I think it's Argento's most complete work in the sense of story, pacing, gore, cinematography and set pieces. I didn't really like Suspiria, I felt the pacing was off and story was both convoluted and flat.

...that MOT seemed more like a film Dario would have produced in the 80s (like DEMONS) than an either of the previous Three Mothers films? Not that it's a bad thing at all, the film was gloriously over-the-top. I can't wait for GIALLO.

..or whatever you call it? I love to hear Argento speak in his fractured but enthusiastic English. I've had the pleasure of engaging in a (brief) conversation with him and he was so animated, we could have dispensed with words completely and communicated in grunts and hand gestures alone.
