I've always been a RATM and Audioslave fan, so kinda biased. I felt it was edgy and fit the tone of new bond perfectly.

And looks like one of my two questions got answered [about standalone or continous story arc]. Though am sure I wasn't the only one to ask that. I hope subsequent stories don't piss on the continuity... maybe new arc, but still the same universe.

They could get Barry Manilow and Barbara Steisand to do a duet and it would kick ass in comparison. Bond getting tortured to techno music, Christ.

Anyway, The World is Not Enough by Garbage was the best, at least in the last 20 years or so.

Craig is good but I'm still pissed they dropped Brosnan but finally used his idea to make the scripts grittier and not suck so much.

The songs should have gone as part of the revitalisation of the series, they should just have a score. I haven't heard the new one yet, might be good, might be bad, but either way it's a gimmick I think has been done to death. Liked what I read in the above, they are making these films now in a good way, a much better direction.

I liked to see Forester talk about utilizing some similarity in his own production design and classic James Bond design. That tune had a sweep to it and some of the best use of synthesizers in an '80s song. Very underrated theme and movie. Connery will always be the best. Dalton is my Bond. He was the Bond I saw when I was 16 and 18, the best ages to watch a 007 flick. He would have rocked in the Daniel Craig Bonds.

It wasn't entertainment and it wasn't drama. It was an endurance test: How much shit can we throw at these two characters before we completely break your spirit as a viewer. I gave up at the point that Halle Berry's kid gets hit by a car... offscreen.

However, FINDING NEVERLAND was very, very good, so QUANTUM OF SOLACE is gonna be one big crapshoot for me.

...because of the plot set-up. Vesper was killed by her Algerian boy-friend, who is under M's protection. So Bond has nowhere to turn, but to the Italian guy (Giancarlo Giannini) that he tasered in Casino Royale. Now that's being behind the eight-ball, even for James Bond.

05:34:36 PM
Those two are among my favorite bond films and they certainly did not have shitty effects. One of the greatest (real) stunt sequences ever filmed was the cargo net sequence from The Living Daylights. You couldn't fake the wide shots back then so there were stuntmen wearing parachutes crawling around on the net hanging out the back of a plane. As for the films themselves, I liked them because they returned to a grittier and more realistic tone after Roger Moore, much like the new Casino Royale did after the later Brosnan movies.

I'll admit it: I've always thought "View to a Kill" was one of the finest of the Bond songs. "Youk Know My Name," however, is my all-time favorite. Yes, I put it above "Live and Let Die," "Goldfinger," and "The Living Daylights," and it's because that song is so ridiculously badass (like everything else in CR). Even though I vehemently hated "Another Way to Die" on first listen, I put the mp3 on continuous repeat and became acclimated to it. The lyrics are actually good, and I've become immunized to the vocals.

Loved Casino Royale and I'm really looking forward to Craig's next outing in Quantum of Solace. I agree that Sean Connery was the "gold standard" of Bonds - the perfect blend of menacing and suave, with a nice touch of humor thrown in. Roger Moore fell way short on the menacing scale, and for that reason his Bond is at the bottom of my list. Lazenby wasn't as bad as he's made out to be, but his lack of acting skill was evident. However, I think he would have gotten better if he had done more Bonds (not that I wasn't ecstatic when Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever). I thought Timothy Dalton was a very good Bond, but he was completely humorless and there was no twinkle in his eye. Not that I wanted him to be a winking jokester like Moore, but a little humor once in a while wouldn't have hurt. Brosnan was fine, but he was done in by poor scripts. He could have pulled off Casino Royale, but now I'm completely down with Daniel Craig. I hope he continues in the tradition he started with Casino Royale - solid storytellng, interesting characters, and brutual, realistic action scenes. Finally, Another Way to Die doesn't do anything for me, and neither did You Know My Name. I actually thought Madonna's Die Another Day was better than both.

Always nice to read a few things about a new Bond movie, but there were no real surprises, Capone. Not unless we include the fact that Craig will be making quite a few more Bonds after QoS, coming from Broccoli's own mouth. Still looking forward to this even with the short running time... 106 minutes... and the title song isn't as bad as everyone's making out.

OK: Casino Royale had one and only one genius action sequence: the bit where he chased the guy up the crane. the other action sequences in Casino were dull dull dull variants of 'Bond chases somebody on foot'. Compare that to Moonraker, which is often cited as the worst Bond. It has, on my count, three great action sequences: the pre-titles jumping out of the plane sans parachute; the g-force sequence where Moore's face goes all crumpled; the Brazil cable-car fight with Jaws. Winners all. And that's in addition to the other ones - which aren't brilliant but are enjoyable: the fight in the Venetian glass museum with Chang; the Amazon boat chase; the laser battle; Corinne being chased by those big dogs; the sniper in the trees at Drax' chateau. See what I mean?

I'll adhere to the axiom that one who has a glass house should not cast stones, and refrain from criticizing your musical tastes; however, there is no way that Brosnan could have pulled off CR. It's not that I don't like Brosnan's Bond - it's just that his portrayal could never have been the badass that CR demanded. I seriously can't see Brosnan climbing cranes and killing people with his bare hands. Any scenes where he was without his gun were unbelievable and lame. Craig's Bond, meanwhile, definitely looks the part of someone who could kill with his bare hands.
Brosnan in Casino Royale
by Screwbini
Sep 24th, 2008
12:48:28 PM
I respectfully disagree, Doc. By the time he did The World is Not Enough, I think Brosnan had developed enough of a badass persona to pull off some of the more violent bits in CR. The look he gave one of his victims in the pre-credits sequence of TWINE convinced me that he could appear ruthless, and he had put on enough weight to alter the rather puny appearance he had in Goldeneye. I'll agree that Brosnan is not quite the badass that Craig is, but I think he had enough physicality to pull off most of the chase/fight scenes in CR. Just my two cents.

... I think Craig did an amazing job (though I still think Dalton did the best 'Bond from the Book' combining the dangerous Craig style 007 with the suave Brosnan one). I also really enjoyed Casino Royale though think it would have been perfect had they removed about 40 mins from the running time. Oh and last of my self righteousness comes in my really loving the new tune but hating the production (please guys - one vocalist or the other as together they sound terrible!).

You're right about the blue-screen, but at the time that cable car chase was still pretty cool. You're also right about the TERRIBLE way they made Jaws into a comedy character (he was quite scary for a moment in The Spy Who Loved Me). But the G-force sequence was really unsettling (his crumpling face, the use of sound effects rather than music, the sadism of the thing) and we can agree that the pre-titles 'no parachute' sequence was completely breakthrough - it's STILL imitated on a fairly regular basis (Eraser, Alias, Get Smart etc etc). At least they were ORIGINAL. In 2006, it felt that a Parkour scene was de rigeur for any action scene. And that was undoubtedly the best action scene in CASINO ROYALE.
The G-force scene is admittedly pretty good...
by Nasty In The Pasty
Sep 25th, 2008

...but that's mainly because it's pretty much the ONLY suspense/action scene in the movie that isn't capped with an inane visual gag or lame quip (like the scene with Bond fighting Drax's henchman in the glass factory. Seeing his LEGS STICKING OUT OF A PIANO at the end just wrecks everything that came before).
