I guess race comes into play a bit too much with Captain America (and America) for it to be more than an "alternate" take on Captain America (instead of merely a color blind one). Really though, it's interesting casting. Smith would play a good Captain America, if he was willing to play Captain America and not Will Smith's Captain America, (aww hell no, Red Skull. I know you didn't just tie MY sidekick to no rocket). *** I'd go see it.

I don't know why you should have been "confused, angry and scared about it" at all. "Confused angry and scared" that they might cast a black man as Captain America?Plot wise, it would work fine. I'm not buying that argument AT ALL. Somebody explain to me how this is NOT racist.

McKidd was born to play THOR and if anybody else gets the part I'll cry. Watch one episode of Rome (which is very sadly missed) and youll agree. As for CAP, Pitt? I actually like Pitt, but it wouldnt work. I think itd be a case of the actor over powering the role. Like he may be a cool Cap but the whole time hes on screen he would be taking you out of the film, you couldnt willfully suspend your disbelief. Itd just be hey look at Brad Pitt. Fuck the gripes about age I've heard, I think Eckhart would be great. And really...at this point and time I cant see a better fit than him. But hey, they could do much worse than Brad.

Eckhart is an awesome actor but a bit too old to play cap, and has not proven himself to be a physical action hero yet. He's a bit too tall and lanky. Thomas Jane is great too but I still haven't gotten over the hangover and dry heaves leftover from the Punisher. But hell your choices are better than mine cause I got none. Marvel's got lots of choices though just like Sarah Palin's daughter.

If Harry hadn't run this, I was going to write up a BUZZKILL tonight, since I got several Marvel sources to confirm that this is untrue. I'd run one to dispel the Johny Depp/Philip Seymour Hoffman rumors... BUT I ALREADY DID... and yet, the rumors continue in a miserable echo chamber of stupid. That's why that column exists... to kill rumors that we are being e-mailed over and over and over that are patently false.

How he convinced the world that he's this brilliant thespian with horrible films like Hancock, I Robot, and I Am Legend in his recent filmography is a mystery wrapped in a riddle. The guy has no artistic integrity whatsoever, I don't give a shit how much money his shitty movies make. He's literally the biggest box office draw on Earth and he could get any project molded to his specification and what does he do? He takes everything that is worthwhile about properties and turns them into toothless exercises in narcissism in which he gets to play the coolest/most badass person on Earth. I mean look at I Am Legend, where he was the brilliant scientist who also happens to be immune and incredibly bad ass, give me a fucking break. I swear he makes movies just so he can watch them later and masturbate. Moreover he plays the same annoying guy in every one of them. He has a few departures where he was alright, but nowhere near justifying his popularity.

Yeah, strange idea, but he has gravitas. He could be a post war WWII vet suddenly in a post 9-11 world. There's a chance at something socially conscious and culturally important could occur if everything is done just right.

You know, enlighten the populace about being vet, from the killing to the pain and feelings of ostracism.

Something dark, but the hope for peace, worldwide and personal, is the driving force of the movie.

So that explains Hancock...

I could actually see them doing the "FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA" film with both the Steve Rogers and Isaiah Bradley characters.

JUST THINK OF IT! All this talk about the price for freedom and the cost it takes for so-called leaders of the "free world" we hear in today's times, with the Iraq War and all... there's a lot of material here from the newspapers, history and the graphic novel "TRUTH: WED WHITE AND BLACK".

If this film could put Steve Rogers face to face with Isaiah Bradley and realize the horrible truth about how they experimented on black men to perfect the super soldier serum... now THAT would put the moral ambiguity and story-telling on the level of "THE DARK KNIGHT". At what point does "democracy" stop becoming about standing up for good and start becoming a sham?

Because it's all well and good if the film is set in World War Two and Steve Rogers is whooping Nazi butt... but if he does that and meets the black Captain America and realizes what crimes his country committed to gain the super sodier serum... THAAAAAAT'S WAY MORE INTERESTING! =0)

Will Smith sucks ass in every movie I've ever had the displeasure of seeing him in. I was hoping this guy's career was over after The Wild Wild West. That being said, I wouldn't mind at all if they incorporated the Isaiah Bradley story in a sub-plot, sequel, spin-off, etc. just as long as they get an actor worth 2 shits. But a CAPTAIN AMERICA movie should feature STEVE ROGERS. Not Isaiah Bradley, not the Winter Soldier in a Captain America costume, it should feature motherfucking STEVE ROGERS. End of story.

Changing Fury for the Ultimates was fine,

as Nick's head was always indistinguishable from Reed Richards or Doctor Strange, apart from the eyepatch. But I can so how someone who claims him as their favorite character would be irritated by departing from the iconic image in the movies. But Sam'll do just fine, in my estimation.

Now, the thing that bugs me -- in a purist sense -- is that they are probably not going to have Nick having been kicking around since WWII. It would be cool to see him in Cap's film during the War with the Howling Commandos, and later in the 60's as a superspy (you'd think they'd might want a spin-off series for him, perhaps to compete with Warner's/DC's Sgt. Rock flick. The first one could be WWII, the second, 60's spies, the third, current day S.H.I.E.L.D.

They'll probably just have Nick Fury be a legacy character like the Dread Pirate Roberts, because they'll claim that the Infinity formula that keeps him and his crew near immortal stretches the bounds of their "preter-reality," but I'd argue that the Iron Man suit, and The Hulk (especially), already strain the shared film universe toward fantasy (particularly when they include Thor), though they'll probably try to give it all an "Ultimates" bent instead of 616, which is regrettable (and also limits other characters/milieu from the Marvel U that they can crossover with their live-actioners).

The guy's been around since the 2nd World War, bud. Even if the average person doesn't know whether he's really Steve Rogers or Hal Jordan, two things the average American DOES know:

(1)Capt. America dresses up in a flag...

and (2)he's White.

You put a Black man in the suit and even if they don't know WHY, the general public's subconscious will be going into convulsions muttering, "Wha...??? That ain't right...!" >:/

Cap can't be black,
by vadakinX
Sep 9th, 2008
02:18:07 AM
I don't mean that in a racist way. As far as I'm concerned, Captain America needs to be a WWII movie with him being frozen at the end and being thawed after the initial credits to find Fury and Banner looking over him...I know exactly how I would do the scene...anyways, getting off topic here...

WWII...early 1940s, deep segregation and racial hatred and not just in Germany. There is no way in hell the US Army would have given their top secret super soldier serum to a black guy...yes it's racist, but it's also a sign of the times.

If Captain America is going to be a WWII movie, then it has to be as accurate as it can be with the period it's set in. While nobody would admit that race was a factor in picking someone to undergo the procedure, you can bet that it was on their minds.

Now having a black Captain America who has to overcome racial hatred in order to win the respect of his troops while taking on the Red Skull, a Nazi who wouldn't have viewed him as being human...that would be a great story...but it wouldn't happen. The army, at that time, simply wouldn't have chosen a black guy to become the posterboy for the Allies war effort.

I think Smith can do great work when he sets his mind to it, and there are certainly some comic book roles that I'd love to see him tackle both on the Marvel and DC side, but Captain America isn't one of them.

.....you do realize that I am Legend was a remake of Omega Man with Charlton Heston playing the exact same character that Will Smith played (military scientist who happens to be immune to the plague, but who also happens to be a badass enough to survive the zombies all alone). In other words the role wasn't written to suit Will smith's particualar abilities, it was based on the pre-existing story that Charlton Heston's movie was also based on and which he also played. So bearing all this in mind, I'm trying for the life of me to figure out why you would consider Smith's portrayal of the exact same character that Heston played as the worst possible thing on earth whearas Heston gets a pass. Other than the fact that Smith's version made about a gazillion times more that Heston's movie, that is............

........Oh yeah, I forgot; Smith is black and Heston is white. How stoopid of me to forget such an obvious fact. I think you need some more starch for your hood......it's leaning a little. Some bleach as well; we don't want any 'black' stains on there now, do we.....

Given the fantastic popularity of America around the world these days, I'm sure the movie will fare great overseas, guys. Oh no wait. It won't be a one-sided patriotic superhero thing, but a film where Cap will face today's America with its contradictions and reinstall the greatness of those great American values that remains. By kicking bad neo-nazi's ass. That or he'll just go empty machine guns into muslims somewhere. I can't wait to see that. And by the way it's absurd to consider Will Smith to play the Captain America, as Will Smith is black! Will Smith would be the super cool Falcon, with his white and red vest. Studios give characters like Supes to people barely out of the kindergarten. The only character that needs to be recruitment age is Cap, and we hear rumors and suggestions about men in their 40's. More interested in the director right now.

....yeah, um, did you happen to notice where I mentioned anywhere in my post that it WASN'T based on a book? you dumb Jackass? Or was that just something your 'beautiful mind' hallucinated all on its lonesome? I said that I am Legend is a remake of Omega man. Which it is! Omega man was originally based on the novel. Which is true. Or at least still is. How the hell do any of those two statements equal me stating that it's not based on a book? Or do you just not know how to read complete sentences? And since you haven't seen Omega man, then how are you purporting to claim that Will Smith was doing the role any less justice than Heston did it, or that it was written as a narcissistic exercise of Will Smith the personna? For the record I HAVE actually watched both movies (unlike some) multiple times, and the major basic difference between the two is the fact that I am Legend is contextualized for the 21st Century whereas the Omega Man was a movie (although apocalyptic) still very well based and entrenched in the 1970's universe that it was written and produced in. As regards how Smith and Heston both play the title character Neville, they both played him exactly how he was written to be played. i.e. a bit of a scientific genius who happens to be a badass. That wasn't something that Will Smith just injected into the role because he's Will Smith; it's the way the character was written to be played you dumb moron. And that was my point. Hate Will Smith all you want, but don't blame your inability to tell the difference between how the role is supposed to be, and indeed is written to be played with what you tiny little infeiority-complex-infected mind deduces to be Will Smith's supposed air of arrogance. Nobody's crying wolf on anything, if you didn't know that that's how the character was written to be played (at least as per the previous movie it was remade from) then maybe you're not a racist;- you're only an ignorant douche, which, I suppose is only slightly better. Congratulations for that.

.....both Will Smith and Charlton play (and played) characters written for them, who in most cases have nothing based on or to do with their real personalities. What's your point? ........at the end of the day, Will Smith is still going to take home more coin that you'll ever see in three of your lifetimes combined,(and of course more than 'bad-ass' Charlie Heston ever made singularly or cumulatively) sleep with his beautiful actress wife and fly between his mansions in his private jet. You, meanhile, stuck in neutral, in dead-end-job-land, reduced to lobbing grade school insults and snipes at the guy from somewhere-basement-land. I'm sure he's writhing in excruciating pain somewhere just thinking about that.

If they do indeed go with the WWII Steve Rogers Capt America, he'll "die" at the end of the film, frozen in some glacier on a mountainside or purposefully by the gov't. He'll be reborn in the new Avengers movie, which is probably why Nick Fury and Tony Stark are running around trying to find a new entourage for the reborn Capt, who has been found or revived, in hopes of restoring America's power and prominence in the world, or something like that. Maybe.

It's not a black or white issue, it's an issue of Will Smith being an over-rated actor and a complete narcissist. With few exceptions, he plays the same 'super cool' character in every movie. Some, like MIB and Independence Day, it worked for. But for superheroes it just doesnt click, see Hancock for proof.. If you really just have to have Will Smith as a superhero, make him The Flash, the same cocky character he played in pretty much all his movies would actually work there pretty well.

Now for supervillians... I could totally see him as the Riddler, the narcissist supreme. I think Smith could easily pull a Travolta and start doing villian roles and really clean up. And don't give me the 'you just want a black guy as a villian' crap, I really couldn't care less care less about race. I just think Smith's attitude lends itself more to a really good bad guy role. Cap is supposed to be a humble man putting country first, I don't see any way Will Smith could pull that off. Same with Hal Jordan, Smith just comes across as too arogant

Speaking of Hal Jordan, I gotta go with Avery Brooks w/ a bit of de-aging. He's got that quiet commanding presence perfect. Not all super heroes have to be 20-35
Of course not. They need him for the Superman reboot.

Michael Pitt for Cap is a great idea! I always thought his brother Brad would be a good choice but perhaps too old now. And i really wish people would stop suggesting actors who have already been in comic book movies to play new ones, not very inspired is it? So thats a NO to Thomas Jane as Cap (he was punisher , remember?), NO to Aaron Eckhart as Cap (he;s two-face, remember?), NO to Chritian Bale as Cap (he's everyone else, remember?), No to Brandon Routh as Cap (he was Superman, remember?), NO to Ben Affleck as Cap (he was Daredevil, remember?)and NO to Tyler Mane as Thor (he was Sabertooth remember?)....and before anyone starts, i know brad isn't michaels brother really.

As to the young recruit "age" of Captain America
by JDanielP
Sep 9th, 2008
08:38:30 AM
It's understandable if you want to stay closer to the comic book roots, in that Steve Rogers was young when he entered the super soldier program. But at the same time, Captain America's leadership abilities seem to go beyond his years. So, as to the "age factor", I'm (personally) much more forgiving...in order to get the right actor for the part. And if (and only if) Brad Pitt can beef up for the part, I think he's a very solid choice.

While I personally can't see them in the role, Pitt or Damon would be fine for Cap if it was a franchise in and of itself, without building towards an Avengers movie. In the "big picture," they're almost too big, and would overshadow the rest of the cast. Avengers isn't an Ocean's movie with all their pals, they'd expect to be the big dog of the production; say what you will, but Norton and Downey Jr. (at least before this summer) aren't huge megastars. I like the Jensen Ackles idea for Cap; I also like Josh Duhamel for the role. Steve Rogers isn't a larger-than-life man, he's just a man with a larger-than-life mantle to bear; you need someone who can pull that off, not only in the solo movie with a bunch of soldiers but also with the Avengers themselves, and it has to balance actually being able to look the part. Tough gig, but you don't need a superstar to do it (especially one who'd bring the shadow of Brangelina to the production).
AICN Talkbackers Should NEVER...

...cast a film. Ever! Given the pathetic track record of being wrong on just about every major 'choice' the bozos here (myself included) have been, if I were a Hollywood casting agency, I'd come here just to know WHO to avoid.

Crispin Glover for Joker/Wonka? Bruce Campell for EVERYTHING (except the perfect Mysterio we all know he'd be!), or the bitching that followed Heath Ledger's casting as Joker. Yeah, stellar track record here, guys.

Inspired casting means not hiring someone just because they've got the 'look' we think they have. Dig deeper than that, and for GODS SAKE stop suggesting momentarily popular faces and sets of tits to be his or her. Same goes for directors...which get their cocks and clits sucked more by AICN talkbackers than anyone else...

CASE IN POINT!! Let's keep talking about how 'perfect' Tim Burton would be Willy Wonka because he made Nightmare Before Christmas. How about that Johnny Depp? Just cast that fucker in everything now and settle down for fish and chips. Guillermo del Toro? Oh, he'd be perfect for The Hobbit (because his films are such character masterpieces...yeah, right). How about Christopher Nolan? Y'all learned his name, so you might as well shout it out every chance you get...

Same works in REVERSE! You all hate Brett Ratner, hate Paul (whatever his initials are) Anderson... yet where's the real hate for that master of shit, Uwe Boll? Seriously...its like reading the diaries of puppets in here sometimes...think outside the box people, or at least outside the pizza boxes, because its like a broken record here.

Sorry it's confirmed as a rumor. Smith would have made a fine choice, certainly better than other actors tossed around here(thank god none of us cast these things). Someone in the original talkback had the idea that maybe Cap was black, but the propaganda machine simply made him white for the public. That's a brillant idea. Regardless, Joe Louis was an iconic black man that Americans in the 40's loved that served in WW2, so it's really not that big of a stretch.

CAPTAIN IN OUR TIME.
by haywood
Sep 9th, 2008
10:06:27 AM
I am a big fan of Cap. But I have to say that a black Captain America would work if it was done after the death of the original Steve Rogers. So many African Americans have fought in our wars, and died for this country also, that they can wear that red white and blue suit. Now as for Cap, ie: Steve Rogers his character works better as a fish out of water story. A WW2 story to me seems a bit much. What makes cap interesting is not his adventures in the past, but his adventures in our time. How does a White man who was raised during those times, cope with the changes in himself, and it in the times he has to now live in. That to me is the story of Captain America. It would be better if the film started with a submarine just picking up his frozen body, and then through some flashbacks and newsreels we would be introduced at the same time that he is gaining his memory to his adventure as Captain America in WW2. Then back to the story at hand, Cap in our time. As for those that think that cap should be young, it goes either way, there were many men in their thirties that enlisted in the war, it actually makes him more of a loser that he is in his thirties and has not found his calling. Just some thoughts.

I agree it could work in theory but I think that there is far too much disillusionment, anger, and anti-patriotic feelings in the black culture we know today in 2008 for it to be believable. Pardon me while I'm still spinning over the possibilities (of this idea)! It just makes complete sense...if an actor like Brad Pitt (or anyone in that age bracket) gets the part. Can you imagine Steve Rogers having a history since the 80's, as a U.S. agent? And with his "cap"abilities, he would be a natural choice to lead the Averngers. (If I was running the show, I think this is the direction that I would go!)

Thanks for your post. That is what Cap should represent reconciliation and hope. Cap represents the ideal America one that has yet to be achieved. As for the black culture if we get past the stuff that the media depicts we all would be amazed on how similar and diverse black america is. I always count the commercials.. how many minorities are shown, how many drama shows depict a leading cast of minorities? Its all good to chat about it, thank you.

If we can do so without getting banned, then awesome. If not, fuck it. I understand your assertion that the media puts forth a certain spin on black culture. But what a lot of people may not understand is that most of black America lives in the south. I moved to the south from Oregon at age 9, and have lived here among what is an astonishingly different racial ratio of people. About 70% of the town I live in is black. So I know there is diversity, but there is also those who would just as soon let the media identify them and accept that identity. It's sad and a shame, but at least some people are combatting it.

okay fannies, I get it. I'm one too. I love the characters and all that. and I do think that "they" (hollywood, marvel, etc.) don't need to make the changes from a "stunt casting" point of view, but hearing that the blond and blue eyes is "ICONIC" as the reason... well it scoffs of racism in the way that people don't know that they're being racist. just sad. frankly, I like that guy MARC BLUCAS for Cap. that or an unknown. but to just FLAT OUT SAY NO, and to say no 'CAUSE Smith is black... yikes. it's ugly, and I'm just sad to see it in the FanBoy community and even more so from the HeadGeek. (*anybody into comics remember the TRUTH series? that would make a GREAT pre-Captain America movie and that's essentially about the early testing for the Captain America project done on black soldiers before the final was given to Steve Rogers... makes for an interesting story... and speaks to historic tragedies like the Tuskegee Experiment. I'm just sayin'...)

around the "racist" card. It's a complete non-sequitor. I kept throwing out the "DJ Qualls as Luke Cage" argument to show how stupid this whole thing was. If race really, really didn't matter in casting, then Qualls can be considered for Cage. Let's go another way, and leave race out of it altogether...Let's say the rumor yesterday was that Dane Cook had been offered Captain America. He's white, could dye his hair, hit the gym and gain some bulk, whatever he needed to do to look like Cap. The fact is, he plays a white boy slacker dipshit with sinus problems in every movie he makes. Other than "I Am Legend", Smith plays a wise-cracking, cocky but lovable down-to-earth, non-threatening black guy. (I will give you that he brooded a little in "I, Robot", but he still popped off all the time. Now I am all against type casting, but Smiff has done this to himself. No one has forced him to take the roles he takes, but at least he knows where his strength is; lots of actors never find it for themselves. However, getting back to my point, if it had been Dane Cook announced as Cap, the feedback would have been just as vitriolic as it was yesterday; possibly even more so, as some would not be as inclined to hide their true opinions for fear of being called a racsist. The simple fact is neither man fits the part of Captain America, regardless of the color of their skin. And that whole "Isaiah Bradley" stuff was nothing more than a terrible retcon attempt by Marvel. Didn't Bradley wind up functionally retarded because of the serum or something like that at the end? Again, it may be "stereotyping" or "typecasting", but it is not racism.

but then, maybe that's the direction they're going and they're just not letting us in on it. it would be cool, and even ending it on a note where the black cap character dies would also add a measure of tragedy to the Steve Rogers character that isn't there... and it would also sort of include the fact that America is a multi-cultural, diverse country (so that the symbol of Cap doesn't sort of exclude others... ya know?) but yeah, I agree with the guy who said that Talkbackers shouldn't really cast. becasue they're too close minded. they're not visionaries. they're type-casters. and until the molds are broken for them, as with Hollywood and most people, they can't see that they CAN'T SEE outside of the box. JOKER being the PRIME EXAMPLE -- none of the haters would cop to their error. anyway... the discussion continues.

cause TRUTH was a bad comic, but a GREAT IDEA (just poorly rendered... but how often have we seen that happen?) of course, Steve Rogers wasn't their best soldier... he was scrawny and all that... BUT... he posssessed a greater level patriotism than any soldier before him (that is canon). so c'mon geeks, let's let the story dictate the casting, and sure let Cap be who we know, but not say things like "blond, blue eyed is ICONIC" and that being blond and white is representative of "the american dream". they're poor arguments that are only making everyone look like racist bigot when that's not even the point. and that's what I"m trying to say. that and MARC BLUCAS should be Cap. Still think Cap should be white but if the studio really wanted Smith as Cap then their is the story that was done in Marvel a few years back where the first Captain America was indeed black. The serum or process was teased on either on African americans or an African Americcan before it was tested on white males. I didn't read the story but i do remember hearing the story and seeing the comic, but I have never been a fan of Captain America as a stand alone character. this anti black argument. When you are going to try and make an argument for a comic character using real world issues that can be debunked from my point and ebated overall has no relevence. I noticed you mentioned black awards or affirmative action but you also left out the fact that Affirmative action is not just or never was for black people, it actually covers all minorites and white women, but it's always easire to whites riled up when you just mention the NEGROS. As for something as ridiculas as award shows? Well what about all the latino awards shows or the 5 or 6 cable stations that cater to hispanic americans and speak in spanish. But yet you also hear people like Jack complain about the one black BET network, which actually speaks in the national language of english. "It's not racist, it's staying true to the character." But the thing that comes off as racist is that you think his whiteness is such an important part of his character that it must be preserved. Now with something like Thor, I understand. His heritage is a big part of his character. If it was a WWII story set in the '40s, then making him black would have a much bigger impact on the character (although having a Tuskegee-like sub-plot sounds interesting). But if it's set in the modern day, I don't see what the big deal would be about casting a black man, or even Will Smith (the guy can really act when he decides to). Captain America stands for a lot of things, but "being white" isn't one of them.

Although, leave it to an article like this to really bring out the racist trolls. Yikes. Do not feed.

The WWII angle is essential to the character, IMHO. WWII is the last time people could believe that Americans were, unequivocably, fighting on the side of good against an absolute evil (why else does every despot whom the US wants to overthrow get called "the next Hitler?) That innocence has not been part of the experience of any American soldier since that war.

Okay, I'm a person of color, and a comic geek, and I think Will Smith would be a good choice for the black Captain America as depicted in “Truth”, but only to establish that part of the story. I don’t have a problem with Captain America being white because I’m not stuck on the race issue. For me, get a good actor, a director that can respect the mythology and not feel he needs to spray Schumacher all over it, a studio that will stay the hell out of the way, and a story that doesn’t insult the material or the intelligence. That’s what I care about. In defense of Big Willie, he’s a good actor – I know some of you out there are now LOL over that, but it’s my opinion, so chill out. But him as Captain America is as good an idea as him being Jim West, and we know how well that went (script and all, it was @$$). I almost think that role needs to be an unknown, or at least someone who has the chops to carry it off. He has to do more that look like the man, he has to BE the man. End of Sermon.

That's exactly why I don't want Smith. It's not that I want CA to have a low budget, I just don't want budget to influence casting in that way. It's why everyone from Burt Reynolds to John Travolta was offered Superman, and why it was so brilliant that Donner went with Reeve. What I'm saying is that they shouldn't shoehorn some actor in just because he's a big star. I thought the Nolan Batman movies proved that.

My dad made me heir to his home movies: Martin Luther King marching in Baltimore. Dog days of August, profusely sweating, you could fry an egg on the pavement. But Dr. King literally kept his cool. Flash forward: Jesse Jackson, engaged for a high school lecture, insists on being furnished with an air conditioned limo among other frills. America needs another King. And it sure ain't Obama. At any rate, I don't understand the nature of these "news flashes", e.g. a remake of CANDYMAN with a white actor in the title role. Hollywood is hypocritical to the max but what's with all these unfounded rumors reversing racial roles? What's next? Carmen Electra in THE COLOR PURPLE?

so I read the shit show above (or some of it at least) I think Brad Pitt is perfect for Cap because depsite being over 40 he can still look 21 (benjamin button anyone? Chad Scmidt? He's playing 21 in both of those) and he can get buff (see Troy, he's not getting any bigger then that but for Cap I don't think he has too) he's got blonde hair, blue eyes and leadership qualities. All that being said, he will most likely never accept a role like this, unless it's looking real A list status. Damon is too ugly...sorry he just is...Someone above suggested Iceman from HBO's Generation Kill, this has been the best suggestion I've heard so far, he looks JUST like cap and seems to have some chops and he's young and built. I also agree that Aaron Eckhart would also be good and MAYBE Thomas Jane. Someone also said something about if someone played a superhero already they can't play another, which is assinine. No one really even wants to remember Jane as the Punisher and he's been replaced in that role already anyway, so who gives a shit?

by SpawnofAchilles
Sep 9th, 2008
01:54:40 PM
as Cap is just fucking stupid...A big part of that is because yes he is black and the beloved character of however many years is white. It also has to do with the fact that Will Smith is Will Smith (although I thought his performance in I Am Legend is really good and the first 2/3 of that film, MINUS ALL SHITTY CGI, is really good, it totally derails in the last third and the CGI is un-fucking-forgiveable)

He's a very driven, but very skinny guy who wants to be a hero. He volunteers for some f*cked up government program, and ends up stronger than he ever imagined.

He gets to go overseas and fight the good fight, becoming the heart and soul of the American troops.

Then he falls into a coma, and wakes up over 60 years later. His country, once proud and virtuous, has become shady and conspiratorial. Foreign relations are shit. America is seen as belligerent, careless war-mongers. Pollution is out of control. The water tastes like sludge, and the women dress like whores. People are addicted to strange drugs, and violence is everywhere.

He knows America should better than it is, and he's disappointed.

I have a hard time with this also. I've never liked captain america because he always seemed like a corny blowhard to me. Now I see that many people love cap and I looked into some of the cool storylines and the WWII is epic and he is a great leader of men, so I like the character more but his powers are kinda lame (he's a heightened human, additional strength and agility but not all that much compared with most heroes and villians) and the shield thing just seems out of place, why does he have a shield, did I miss when they were handing out shields to allied forces? I really wonder if this can work live action and not be really awful. I hope it does for the avengers sake. I feel the same way about Thor, exept he is uber powerful but really out of place in modern day.

That's news to me. And admitting you sometimes have racist thoughts somehow absolves you of ever having been a racist? How about semantics: Not everyone has RACIST thoughts. That's a bit extreme. We're all a bit PREJUDICED about things and people we don't understand or know personally. Even if we don't like to admit it. And most people don't and won't admit it. It's called humility. Take KDOG for example, would you approach a white man you don't know one bit, and tell him he is ignorant and racist...because he's white? I seriously doubt it. Humility. No one admits to prejudice. Except for kdog, apparently who has admitted to having full-blown racist thoughts. Oh, and actions may speak louder than words but that means SHIT on a message board. We're all sitting on our asses calling each other names. Our actions here are limited. stfu

Thor is a God, Cap is a peak human (granted I believe he is more powerful then the most fit human but not by much which means spiderman is way stronger and more agile as one example) plus I used to collect marvel cards (yes I'm that cool) and they listed there powers on the back and caps shit was all low

Steve Rogers is about 23 when he volunteers for the program. Before he tries to enlist, he was a fine arts student who wanted to fight the Third Reich.

Obviously society was much different then; racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. And it's naive to think that young Steve wouldn't harbor a few of those ignorances.

But I would like to think he was chosen for Operation:Rebirth because of his moral standing. Because he believes in justice, and honor. All the good things that make a soldier great. The serum gave him physical ability, but Steve Rogers already had his morals.

your hopeless - as i suspected - and you dont vote - and you defer to your parents - im a dick when it comes to guys like you - you are part of the problem - you dont vote, you dont care, you need a checklist as to what the current administration has done policy wise to fuck us over, and yet youre convinced you know just enough to remain undecided - i wont make a list, but for starters the republicans were the architects of the preemptive war we launched in 2003 - everything from the weak dollar, gas prices, the economy tanking, unemployment at record highs can all be traced to that bad call - its costing us $200 mil a day - do the math

Your right of course...I'm going to stop using you're forever. However, I will use my extra 416 days to get all people to stop using you're. Oh alright...I'll masturbate 415 days and 23 hours...and spend 1 hour emailing everyone I know telling them how awesome that year was.

McCain will win by a landslide. Nothing to do with racism. Obama has just devolved from near-deity to a babbling, generic politician; besides, the Clintons have derailed his impact (Bill, a closet racist, also killed Hillary's "shoo-in" status; what the hell, she was a p.r. whore, anyway). As for all the blather, my grandad told me, "There are assholes in all races." This thread proves it.

thats what its become - the majority of americans seem to want political policies written with "god" or "religion" in mind - specifically the christian god and the christian faith - that is how Mccain will win this election - like Bush before him - he will play the god card - Palin is a creationist that believes the war in Iraq is a mission for us from god - bull shit - there are some in the world that believe the attack on the world trade center was a mission from god - same level of bull shit

I'm not trying to be an overly sensitive douche bag, and I am voting for Obama. But let me remind you fellas that McCain has stiff, stubby arms because he was held captive as a POW and had his arms broken in multiple places by those fucking animals who held him prisoner. Because he wouldn't talk to them. Because he was defending the United States of America. If that means anything to you, you should probably show him some respect and not laugh at the guy's injuries.

because for the third time, I am voting for Obama... I disapprove of his opposing the GI bill as that is my own primary concern, but why do we have to get into this crap about who his wife is (do you really wanna get into a Michelle Obama thing?) and as per waterboarding, I can think of a whole lot worse things many Americans would do to suspected terrorists given the chance.
NiceGuyEddie19, the reason i brought that up...
by JimmyJoe RedSky
Sep 9th, 2008
07:46:01 PM
was to point out the hypocrisy of the republicans - i dont care either who his wife is - but theyre the ones that make shit like that a selling point for voting their way - right now theyre attacking Obama as being a vapid celebrity with no real platform - yet McCain is parading Palin around at every appearance like a show horse and not talking policy or how he will help save the middle class - she is the definition of a politician running on the strength of her celebrity status - she is (thus far) the definition of what her and McCain are bashing Obama for being - she has yet to give a real interview or speak about any policy issues or anything of substance (beyond bashing Obamas experience as a politician) - the neo cons attacked Kerry for who he married and it worked - they called him a phony and a liar married to a rich woman in order to further his career - and voters bought it - look where we are now - safer? - no - a world power? - barely - hated more than ever the world over? - yes - way to go Bush - this is what happens when idiots that get by on their "aw shucks, im a regular guy like y'all" become president - i dont give a shit how many kids Palin has, or that she let her minor daughter get pregnant by some redneck gun toting thug - im worried about the fact that she is so conservative she makes McCain look down right liberal - and she is winning him the election - scary shit man

Anybody can be Captain America
by Chishu_Ryu
Sep 9th, 2008

That's the point of the character. Steve Rogers was an ordinary American whose physique was less than ordinary, but he was a true patriot. All that was missing was a shot of Super Soldier serum. Not everybody could be Superman, not everybody could be Batman, not everybody could be Spiderman, not every could even really be Iron Man. But like a hero such as Green Lantern, chosen more for heart than ability, anybody with true blue American ideals could be Captain America. Steve Rogers, Isaiah Bradley, Bucky Barnes, John McCain, Barack Obama, your mother, anybody could be Captain America. I think that's what Stan Lee was getting at.

Earlier I saw someone ask about his shield; as you can imagine there were numerous secret programs in WWII this shield supposedly was an attempt to create a variant of Adamantium (like any fan boy doesn't know what this ties into)an unbreakable metal, that in comics sometimes claimed the shield was called a adamantium/viberainum alloy mix; and a complete accidental bonding of the two metals allowed this one time creation of an unbreakable disc on a par with Thor's indestructible hammer made of Uru (one could theorize that we meaning America stole it from the Germans who had some Uru metal samples...ok sounded cool). truthfully that particular origin of the bonding has been left wide open by the mighty Stan the man Lee for a damn good story in and of itself.

pick an unknown. Give a guy whom has no marquee value a shot. That way the actor has no preconceived baggage coming into the role. Remember, he just graduated or dropped out of college before he enlisted into the Army, cause he was that eager.

Also, one more time, Jamie Bamber, has basically been playing Steve Rogers for the past 4 or 5 years on BSG. Might as well give him a shot. Plus he's already used to dealing with geeks and will work for a lower wage than any of the big names already suggested.

Will Smith as Bucky ? That's funny
by Toby___Wong
Sep 10th, 2008

considering that Bucky in slang means black ass. When Jonhny Walker became the new Captain America and Lemar became Bucky some complaints came in the letter page. Someone explained the editor that Bucky was a racist name. If I remember correctly they stopped calling Lemar Bucky. Hollywood would not be that stupid to have a black Bucky, now would they ? However, seeing as how racist Hollywood was in western movies and Tarzan movies it wouldn't surprise me at all if they had a black Bucky.

you might be right about smith's use of "axed" - or maybe not - i went to college in ny - and a friend of mine there was from a white suburb in long island - he said "axe" and 'axed" too - he didnt seem aware of it when i pointed it out - mind you he also talked like someone from long island or brooklyn, the ny accent we here in movies - i dont think he was faking - i think some people say certain words a certain way because of how they heard them growing up - or because of their provincial way of speaking a disconnect occurs when saying or attempting to say certain words - in other words, they dont hear it coming out of their mouths as wrong - like the way so many people say "nucular" instead of "nuclear"

Or Lucy Lu as Wonder Woman? Because the characters are who they are. Would people be upset if Blade was cast with Jean Claude Van Damme instead of Wesley Snipes? Yes, they would. Would that make them racist? No, it wouldn't. Come to think of it, they should cast Jean Claude to play Wonder Woman, and not considering a man for the role would be sexist.

having thought about it some more - why not - i mean unless steve rogers was frozen and then thawed for this decade or if the movie is about ww2 - why not have smith or a black actor be cap? - he can be the current or new cap - references can be made to steve rogers and the origins of the super soldier program - steve rogers can even be in it, passing the shield and duty/title to the new cap (smith or whoever) - makes sense - because the modern 15 yr old boy wont give a shit that the original cap was white or probably even know who steve rogers is - nowadays these comics are read and reread by adults mostly - i collect comics, i never see any kids in my shop - studios want to sell tickets - the whole point of making comics into movies is the revenue - filling seats with the non-comic readers asses - why do you think iron man and tdk did so well? - the comics? - im not saying disregard the origin stories or change tested mythology, but dont tie your hands with them either
