Being its called "The Last Pharoah", keyword being last. And Smith was pretty pimp in Pursuit of Happyness, he's getting older and mayhap a little wiser with the acting chops. In fact, I was with him when he happened to glance at an Oscar and he said "I GOTS TO GET ME ONE OF THESE."

Aw HELL naw! I AM LEGEND is a good fucking movie. Gets a little shaky in the third act with SHREK, Bob Marley and Redbelt's wife, but the (original) ending is excellent. It's not perfect, but it's a lot better than we all thought it'd be.

And it features Will Smith's best performance to date (yes, better than PURSUIT O' HAPPYNESS).

I would have thought a bleak ending where he dies, would be impossible for Will Smith. But he snuffed it in I am Legend. At least he doesn't seem to have Tom Cruise's ego in that regard.

is terrible. His position at the box office means he has the ability to get practically anything made that he wants...and he wants to make bad movies. I AM LEGEND was about it for me with Will Smith; cheesy dialogue, terrible effects, no balls. I never bothered with Hancock, the trailer made it look dim. The man's got acting chops (Ali, Six Degrees of Separation) but seems to want to hang around making dull sci-fi and actioners. This film looks like an attempt to find a Brave Heart style film for him. Looks like they struggled to find the right material too.

Like Adam Sandler, David Spade, and a few other actors who were cool in the '90's, they are getting too old to play the kind of roles they used to.

Will smith has done a better job than most at making the transition. as long as he does not rap the theme song.

Just because he has a certain persona doesn't mean he hasn't stretched his acting on occasion. Remember Ali? He was also the best part of I Am Legend. If you put anyone else in that role then that film would have not only sucked but probably bomb at the box office.

I'm glad to Randall Wallace is getting back to writing. DocPaz is right, in that "We Were Soldiers" wasn't as great as "Braveheart, but "Braveheart"... what a damn well-written epic. Some of the lines in that film are so quotable they've made their way into the flow of everyday culture.

"A lordship and titles, gold. That I should become Judas?" "Peace is made in such ways." "Slaves are made in such ways!"

"It's all for nothing if you don't have freedom."

"Are you ready for a war?" (thunderous response)

"I know ye can fight. But it's our wits that make us men."

"The Almighty says this must be a fashionable fight. It's drawn the finest people."

"Lower your flags and march straight back to England, stopping at every home you pass by to beg forgiveness for a hundred years of theft, rape, and murder. Do that and your men shall live. Do it not, and every one of you will die today."

"Aye, fight and you may die. Run, and you'll live... at least a while. And dying in your beds, many years from now, would you be willin' to trade ALL the days, from this day to that, for one chance, just one chance, to come back here and tell our enemies that they may take our lives, but they'll never take... OUR FREEDOM!" (Scottish army cheers).

If Wallace composes a strong script with equally rousing and funny dialogue, I can see Will Smith abandoning the "hell naw!" persona and donning a compelling Egyptian glare. I'd love to see this, actually. What a change of pace for Smith. Who would've thought?

I noticed this movie will be written by Wallace, not directed by him, which seems a good path to take. This could be an intense film.

Sure, Braveheart was a good film and all, but Randall Wallace's track record with historical accuracy has a batting average below Eric von Daniken, and I think at least von Daniken is a lot more entertaining.
why call it "The Last Pharaoh"?
by lynxpro
Sep 8th, 2008
09:01:26 AM
First off, the Egyptian King was not known as "Pharaoh"; that was a corrupted term by the Hebrews who didn't apparently understand that the term was a bastardization of the term "Pharaos" which was the King's palace. Once again, we have this retard term popularized. Second, the Egyptian King as an institution survived not only this but Alexander's Greek/Macedonian conquest whose dynasty lasted until Octavian and his Roman forces took control and Cleopatra killed herself. So this title already blows.

In west ethiopia born and raised On the pyramid was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool And all whippin some jews outside of the school When a couple of guys Who were up to no good Startin making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in ziare'

I whistled for a chariot and when it came near The license plate said fresh and it had dice on the mare If anything I can say this chariot is rare But I thought 'Now forget it' - 'Yo horse to niger'

I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 And I yelled to the horses 'Yo homes smell ya later' I looked at my kingdom It was groovy-a To sit on my throne as the Pharoah of nubia!

It was a decontextualized mess that oversimplified and incredibly complex war. It was also incredibly sappy. The subplot with the army wives was when the film really went to shit. The filmmaker should have realized that the situation itself spoke volumes and didn't need to crank up the cheese-o-meter to a thousand. Although, I will give you that Sam Elliott was great. That character needed to be in a better movie.

Octa - there was never a more 'innocent time'
by toadkillerdog
Sep 8th, 2008
02:24:07 PM
Or, more accurately, every generation perceives that their's is the more 'inocent' time. It never is. Just perception's change. Still, I liked We were soldiers. But I also liked Platoon and and other movies that presented a more well rounded view of the men fighting in viet-nam.

Viet-nam was a transition in both the culture of the United States and the military. But the military has always been far less 'innocent' and clean-cut than most have been led to believe. Take the Mauldin cartoon's of the 40's for example, they were beloved by Marines and soldiers because they accurately depicted the real conditions, not the propaganda that the likes of Patton or MacArthur wanted.

In short, We Were Soldiers and Platoon stand side by side. Neither is the entire picture, but both present accurate depictions.

We are mostly in agreement about this. But you really should be careful about the sweeping generalizations of any time period. I was a Marine in the 80's, and let me tell you, Patriotism was no different then or now. The 80's, like every generation, produced some unique circumstances, but it was mostly in the form of excess, and even that was limited to those that could afford to be excessive. The fifties had plenty of depressing things about it. When I was a child, I loved the Tv show Happy days. I would tell my mother that I wish I could have lived back then. Everyone seemed - well, happy! The Fonz and white picket fences etc. etc. She just smiled at me, never tried to disabuse me of childhood ignorance. But as I grew up, I learned, that life aint a TV show. The dissent of sixties did not just spontaneously erupt. The teens of the sixties were kids of the fifties. The twentysomethings in the sixtsies were teens in the fifties. The radical ideas did not start with the Beatles letting their hair grow long. It did not start with Jack Kerouac either. But like most things the seeds were planted by an earlier generation and harvested by later ones.
Is there any possible way this will be good?

Really, it is good source material, if it were done with attention to detail and with respect. Ya know...period correct language, historical accuracy, etc...But Will Smith? I got a smart ass quip for every situation Will Smith? Hell No! I see this being nothing but an historically inaccurate vanity piece at best...a horrid action movie at worst.

good.

A leader, unable to both live up to prior glories and maintain the greatness that was, while losing an empire, is very interesting story IMHO.

it's as about as ridiculous as the numerous movies depicting Egyptians as Anglos, eh? You're a moron. It's a historical fact that Egypt was ruled by Africans (it is in North Africa, buddy). Take a look at original Egyptian statues and art (non-Anglo reproductions) and check out the obvious. You probably think Moroccans aren't African, either. Will Smith as a Pharaoh is 1000% more believable than Charleston Heston as Moses (which makes me want to burst into laughter every time I see The Ten Commandments). Brace yourself---Jesus wasn't an Anglo, either. Lol. Hate on, hater. Pathetic loser.
