The guys at Twitch had me at least interested in it. But your line about J-style horror rings true. Even the Japanese are forgetting how to do it effectively.

Unless it's a two-hour loop of the little Chinese guy getting him wasted, dancing with the Thai hookers, and beating the snot of the other fighters in the bar. Pure gold!

Not just by Anton, but by damn near every review I've read. Some are going so far as to call it the best thing in the whole festival. If that's the case, I may as well just leave now. JCVD isn't a bad film. For starters, it's got a great premise. But the director has no idea what to do with it. So he just keep replaying the post office robbery over and over from different vantage points. Thing is, it wasn't that interesting the first time. In short, JCVD is a couple great scenes in search of a much better movie.
Van Damme playing weary and worn out?

He did that to perfection in 'Hard Corps'. And he's not acting, is he? "...the hardest of the hard core.". What a line, what a delivery.

I saw these two flicks as well. JCVD is a very good movie, don't know about best of the festival, it's only day 2. I think it's mostly ok with enough really bright spots to make it well worthwhile. Sauna is a very nice looking movie that does nothing. When the scare comes at the end it's fairly effective but with no real sense to it at all. Could've been so much better.

Nice of me to flush my pop culture credibility down the toilet with the first review... I suspect my 4 am thought process went something like old = John McCain = John McClane. At any rate, Danny Glover said the damn line in Lethal Weapon, not Bruce Willis in Die Hard. Ugh.

Van Damme was the weakest of the major action stars of the 84-95 period (the peak of American action!). That's not to say I didn't enjoy some of his films, but I would say overall he had the weakest filmography. I will admit this is probably because stuff like Bloodsport and Kickboxer doesn't really appeal to me, although Lionheart was good.

I love the way Roger Moore(!) says he's the best fighter he's ever seen after JCVD beats up, what, three thugs

I'm more inclined to follow his advice. I'll take a gander at it at Fantastic Fest if I can.

And thus hate it. And we all know that humans destroy what they don't understand.
