Rather than giving money to preserve meaningless timber and nails, why not give money to causes that REALLY could use the money... such as those that help sick children, like the Shriners Hospitals. Another great option is donating to your local battered women & children sanctuary. I can see both sides of this argument going on here. Yeah, the economy is in the shitter right now for many of us which makes discretionary income all the harder to come by for anything beyond the essentials in life. For those of us in that category by all means take care of the home front first and foremost. For those of us that have got some measure of enjoyment from comics growing up, if we would donate even the cost of just one current issue of a comic book, that could go a long way towards helping to preserve this building. No one is asking anyone to save the world or cure cancer, but what's $5 if you've ever received any entertainment or enjoyment out of the character that was dreamed up within the walls there?

Superman is a part of Americana. The house should, at least, be on the historic register. Superman has been a significant cultural influence, and he's something uniquely American (cue "no, he's really Canadian" comments here). Sure, there are plenty of really worthy causes out there that desperately need money, too. But that doesn't make this cause unworthy -- and, they're not asking for that much money. If Cleveland had any sense, they'd turn this into a historic site and make money off the deal.

And as far as having any impact on Cleveland - of course, enabling the city's pride in pointing out to its residents that something amazing came from right there in the middle of what is, yes, a neighborhood fallen on hard times, and working to provide it with a landmark that would ultimately bring people there couldn't possibly do anything to help the urban development of the area. Obviously the person who holds the deed to the property does not care about its value... so why not donate the property to the city of Cleveland. This happens all the time with properties of historical or cultural value. Then let the city restore it and set it up as a museum - problem solved.

First - there is no Siegal estate to come up with the money. The legal battles with Warner Bros and DC have gone on for decades with the family receiving very little. If you check out the fundraising site, you will see that Siegal's widow is donating some persoonal items to help in the effort. Second, we are talking about the comic book superhero that started it all (Gladiator and Doc Savage were prose characters). Would comic books still have been created in some form even without Superman? Sure. But this is recognized as the definitive starting point. And the tone of this character affected everything that came after. Third - we are talking about one of the top 5 fictional characters that are recognized worldwide. Right up there with Mickey Mouse and Snoopy. This is the house where the character was actually first created by a teenage kid in his bedroom. While I TOTALLY agree in theory that this renovation should be paid for by people with much bigger pockets than the fans, the bottom line is that it hasn't. Is it unfair? Absolutely! But the reality is that nothing has been done for way too long and it is now down to us. Can I afford it? Not by a long shot. Will I still scrape up whatever I can? In a heartbeat. Yes, there are charities that are much more important than this. One's that save lives. But this is an effort that really doesn't cost that much realize and is achievable in a short amount of time. Everyone has a choice, and many will chose to pass on this. That is completely understandable. But if recognizing this effort (and taking all the shit for doing it) generates any revenue then I say it was worth it. Thanks, Harry!

I have been to India six times and built schools out of bricks with my own hands. I took with me school textbooks that were purchased through donation money and some very nice collections of books from local universities. As for my own financial contributions, air fare and my own personally paid provisions and lodgings amounnt to more than what I pay per year for my truck - so Im covered there. I dont think Im going to siphon from that pool to pay for a run down house in a high crime area of a metropolitan city just because a cartoonist grew up in it. This update wasn't about UNICEF or World Food Bank, or any other worthy charities like that. It was about a house that has a VERY LOOSE CONNECTION to the Superman mythos. VERY. LOOSE. That was the subject of this article, and that was the appeal you made. You didn't say, "hey guys here's a page full of links to charities" - you tried to sway us with a rediculous and poorly written sonnet about some guy's old childhood home, and tried to make it sound like it was an important landmark. How about donating to Mount Rushmore? Did you know its upkeep and maintenance is ENTIRELY FUNDED BY DONATIONS?? If you want to save and preserve a landmark, I would think something like Mount Rushmore might be higher on the list than the house you just tried to get us to pay for. How about 1) buying the house 2) petitioning the City of Cleveland to name it a historical landmark 3) buy the adjacent worthless properties 4) fix the house up and add a statue and gift shop 5) put a fence around it (trust me, I live in Cleveland) and 6) open Geek Mecca. How about Alex Ross, who has made a substantial amount of money off of Superman alone, pony up a little more cash and pay for it along with all the other pros who have used Superman to further their careers?

Right on man! I completely agree with you. The more I think about the more pissed off I get too. Seinfeld is a HUGE Superman freak and he has, what... a BAZILLION dollars?! So where the fuck is he on this? And, like you said, all the people who have made a MINT off of Superman. Where is WB and DC?? Harry screwed the pooch on this one. BIG time.

for being the birthplace of an American icon. Comic books have been an integral part of the longetivity and impact of genre entertainment in this country, and comic books wouldn't have survived if it weren't for the early popularity of Superman, Batman, and Captain Marvel. I agree that it would be better for someone like Seinfeld could buy the property outright for several million, and the old couple could go retire in luxury in Boca Raton. The surrounding properties could serve as parking and a giftshop/restaurant. Bribe the hell out of corrupt Cleveland officials/the mob/land owners, gentrify Glenville, make quality low-income housing available as well, and clean up that part of town. Meltzer's charity would better serve by providing constructively creative art programs for inner-city kids.

Like the t-shirt shop that ends in "teez" because they want you to know that they're the shop that's different and has plenty of attitude. Very passe. In fact, I think the early 90s wants their "xtreme" attitude & lame spelling variations back. They no longer show individualism, but rather serve the purpose to show who the cheezenutZ are. Kinda like the square who got an earring in their left ear after everyone else already had retired theirs. To quote the Thursday 9-11 Cleveland Plain Dealer, "The online auctions to save the house where Jerry Siegel created Superman took off faster than a speeding bullet.
