I love stories about the birth of the awsome s.a.s. Good movies about the s.a.s and other special forces are rare but this could be great I think. Pressfield's Gates Of Fire is my fave book ever. And yes Fuqua would be a good selection. Training Day rocks and there are good parts in Tears Of The Sun, Shooter and King Arthur dir cut. But I would prefer if someone like Tony Scott, Ridley Scott, Paul Greengrass or the guy who did Tropa De Elite directs this thing. And Hans Zimmer should do the score. This will be the best movie of 2010 if it is ready by then.

How much you wanna bet they paint Rommel as some type of nazi-bastard that shoots war wounded and bombs hospital tents, when it was actually the British who did that while Rommel made sure to adhere to a honor code and respect the rules of war. Rommel used to cut water rations for his own men just to make sure prisoners had water, he ignored orders from Hitler to execute Commandos/French fighters, he made sure war wounded received proper medical care, he would stop attacks just to let the other side gather their wounded/dead, and he cared a great deal about the men under his command. His only big error was getting briefly associated with the Hitler assassination plot because the conspirators knew the Allies respected him greatly and might negotiate with him rather then some member of the Nazi party(Rommel didn't support the assassination idea when approached, he wanted to put Hitler on trial instead). Because Rommel was such a hero in that country, he was basically given the Godfather 2 option: Kill yourself by drinking this poison, and your family/staff will be protected and we'll give you a state funeral and none will be the wiser except us. It's too bad, really. Rommel also recognized that the Russians were going to be the real problem. There's a famous story about how his men captured a British Commando in the months before D-Day. The Commando shook Rommel's hand and said it was an honor. Rommel then mentioned that they really should stop fighting each other and team up vs. Russia. Rommel then arranged it so the Commando would be treated as a normal prisoner of war and had him sent to a less nasty POW camp.

I am so sick of "ing" titles that explain exactly what the plot of a movie is. I'll forgive that shit for small time indie films, because it's probably not the only amateurish aspect to them anyway. But, when something like this, or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, succumb to the "ing" title, it just looks and sounds cheap.

He was a German first and foremost, so his loyalty was still to his country. He never supported Nazi doctrine and it's debatable if he even knew about the Jewish extermination going on. The fact he BURNED orders from Hitler that stated any military prisoners captured in non-military clothing or French fighters were to be executed on the spot and expressed disgust with said order makes me think he wouldn't be keen with the idea of civilian slaughter.

Well, I mention Russia because right after WW2 ended, look at the little thing called the "Cold War" which sprung up. That's part of the reason why the US started to grant amnesty for Nazis or other questionable people who were involved heavily with Eastern Front intel, etc. They didn't care what they had done from an ethical standpoint, they just wanted the expertise to help combat the new threat.

Rommel killed himself. There, ending spoiler. Honestly, Randall Wallace should be skewered on 17th century rapiers for what he did to the Three Musketeers in The Man in the Iron Mask. As for Braveheart, yeah, it looked good, but what the hell? Why change the history when the real events concerning William Wallace are much more dramatic than anything Randall Wallace could make up? Also, last thing, hope this movie doesn't follow Hollywood convention about WWII in North Africa by making it entirely Germans vs. Brits. Most of the soldiers under Rommel's command were Italians. He was the only general, German or Italian, who got much of anything out of 'em. And if Hitler's in the movie, make it Bruno Ganz from Downfall. Henceforth, he must be Hitler in every movie that has a Hitler. And also every movie that doesn't have a Hitler. The big question is, will the Germans use accents or speak German or speak plain English...

on my desk is a 3 pound lug nut that was supposed to secure the oil pan on the bottom of Rommel's tanks. It was one of thousands that were dumped into the river and never installed. 30 minutes after being driven off of boats, the tanks shut down in the african sand, and there were no parts available to fix them. He operated with less than one fourth the number of armored vehicles he was supposed to have at his disposal. He kept one and now it holds down invoices on my desk. true story.

The Desert Fox, whatever your opinion of him as a man, is an historical subject that deserves a dignified, dramatic, and respectful film. So we'll get two hours of tanks blowing up in impossible Death-Star-esque fireballs, a few "quiet moments" with ham-fisted uber-expositional dialogue, and probably Shia LaBoof in a key role. Watch Patten. And yeah, Pearl Harbor sucked, but I thought the Battle of Britain stuff was the best part. I've never seen a good movie about the Battle of Britain. Why is that? It's the coolest story. Guys with an average of like 5 hours flight experience fighting for their country's very survival against the most experienced pilots on the planet. And winning. I can't believe this isn't a movie.
