Why do people keep saying this? He wrote the film for Rogen after seeing his performance in 40 Year Old Virgin... that was before Rogen hit big. That was all Smith knew him from. It was Seth Rogen's idea to cast Banks.

GHICK FLICKS. See how it rolls off the tongue? I guess it all started with the 40 Year Old Virgin, but you could possibly attribute ghick flicks to any Happy Madison production as well. These are movies which are vulgar enough for guys to enjoy, but in the end really turn out to have a heart of gold, something for the chicks to get into. Quite ingenious really....

I don't understand the hate for Smith either. I understand how you could hate his movies, but people treat him like he directed Mac and Me. Maybe the guy isn't the most consistent filmmaker, but he doesn't seem like a bad guy. And after 15 or whatever years of Clerks being out, it's still a pretty funny movie. And yes, I wasn't that offended by Jersey Girl. Dogma will always be my favorite though. To each their own.

Where it premieres on Sunday. A sampling: Rarely before has a would-be comedy been so littered with unfunny dirty jokes. Worse yet, there’s far more gooey sentiment than cheerful vulgarity in Kevin Smith’s flaccid attempt to make his own Judd Apatow movie. Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) are Pittsburgh pals who turn to porn to make some bucks but can’t cope when their onscreen sex has off-screen ramifications. Just as the f-bomb-laden dialogue elicits the occasional shocked guffaw, this gang’s Andy Hardy–like efforts to put on a show merits a chuckle or two. But the average Carry On movie displayed more class, sophistication and wit than this egregiously lazy and faux-risque lame-ass-ery.

Set in the 80's when people still bought porn and "Star Whores" wasn't already done (that has to be the oldest porno movie spoof name ever). But whatever, I'll see it.

And I'll try not to be pissed when Elizabeth Banks doesn't get naked. The lead actress that everyone wants to see never gets naked. Unless it's Angelina Jolie in the 1990's.

Apatow V. Smith

For everyone saying that Smith is ripping off Apatow, It seems that Smith has been trying to make vulgar comedies "with heart" for some time before Apatow became big. Seth Rogen might be what Smith needs to make his movies funny again.

09:10:22 AM
Smith's old Clerks star gets shit on his face in a crude scene – and so do the cult director's fans with a movie that blows so hard it makes actual porno look like Fellini. Zack (Rogen) and Miri (Banks) are lifelong pals who make porn to pay their debts, but there's no surprise when they accidentally fall in love between takes. Banks rises above Smith's material, which tediously stretches out what spare potty humour and bankable caricatures he has and lays them bare across the framework of a conventional rom-com. Characters make senseless and maddening decisions, and Smith calls us dumb when he throws in an illogical, manipulative and obvious red herring to divert us from the happy ending we've seen cumming.
Smith is way better than Apatow
by superunknown85
Sep 3rd, 2008
09:26:17 AM
Smith doesn't make his movies "cool" and trendy with the latest hip hop/pop songs, references to the latest movies, and generic characters. Clerks, Chasing Amy, and Dogma are far better and more intelligent than anything Apatow has done, and Mallrats, Jay and Silent Bob, and Clerks 2 were at least funny.

You are smart. Its time for re-invention. These fanboy twits are not going to be happy no matter what you do. We put all are cinematic hope in the indie generation, you, Quentin, Rodriguez, etc, and youve ALL repaid us by remaking the same movie over and over again. You were the real maverick in the 90's, completely outside the system...you should be the one to take a bold leap forward and for gods sake just do something different. No comics or culture references, no dick and fart jokes. Assemble all the actors who you gave a career and make a film about the gulf war or politics or even nuns having fun. Anything but the same old stuff. Your better than that! I love smodcast, maybe try some non-fiction doc about Walt Flanigan and the Stash, thats the funniest shit to come out of the Askewniverse in a decade.

They gave away too much in the trailer, but it looks really funny. The plot: 1. Banks and Rogen are poor and decide to make a porno. 2. They try to cast people but fail, so they decide to do it themselves (too much given away in the trailer). 3. They have problems doing the porno because they've developed feelings for each other. 4. Some deus ex machina crap happens where they are able to solve their financial problem (or live with it) and they also end up together happily ever after. The dialogue looks great, can't wait to see it.

We're not a "strange kind of geek." We're just geeks who appreciate good filmmaking and despise lazy filmmaking. Smith falls into the latter these days. He thinks by throwing a few nods here and there to his geek base, he can get away with making films that have no technical merit, no smart writing, and no cultural savvy at all. As cool as I think the "Monroeville Zombies" jerseys are, I need more than Living Dead references to entertain me. I need quality filmmaking, and Smith isn't cranking that out right now.
