Ah, I guess it dodn't work the way I wanted it to. Anyways, sad news, indeed. But my cat ate a moth, and not only that, SHE SWALLOWED IT WHOLE!!! I could hear it fluttering in her stomach. Pretty cool! I wonder how DOn LAFontaine would actually say that? Terrible news though...

This is fucked up news to start one's day off with. As someone who always forced his friends to get to the movies early so we could sit through trailers, I enjoyed his work immensely - I always pointed out his voice to my friends, and I was very happy when Seth MacFarlane put him on "Family Guy". Still gotta say that he was wonderful in his little bit from the "Hitchhiker's Guide" trailer, where he kinda took the piss out of himself... Rest in peace, Don.

That was another line of his that eventually became kind of a cliche, if you will. Sometimes when I watch the trailers before the film begins, I would wonder to myself "what in the world will the studios do after Mr. Movie Voice retires?" But I never thought he'd pass away so soon. I'm sad that it's the end of era. I grew up with his voice. Well, I hope whoever the studios get to d othe voiceovers now, they don't get some soundalike. It won't be the same.

I was producing promos 10 years ago and at that time Don drove from sound studio to sound studio in a limo, and was always on a very tight schedule. He arrived for my session and there was a technical delay, which could really piss him off. This was my first ever meeting with him, so I tried some small talk to ease the tension: "Hey Don, how long you been doing VO's?" He stared at me somewhat perturbed and said "Since 1964. In other words, your whole fucking life!" Yes! Belittled by the King! I wore that as a badge of honor! Rest in peace, you will be missed.

when I was a little kid, I once asked my mom why all the announcers in the previews sounded the same. she told me it was actually one guy who did about 90% of them. i didn't believe her. talk about a guy who affects movie-goers of all shapes and sizes, but has nearly zero name recognition. he will be missed.

His voice is one of the best things about going to the movies. He will be missed.

I love that trailer you embedded of Don's.
It's like a Sesame Street bit from hell.
I wonder what percent...

...of the movie trailers he actually did per year.
It seems like he did do the overwhelming majority. I know he certainly stood out the most.
I used to wonder who the hell it was that did those trailers. Back then there was no internet to speak of to look it up on. I heard his voice on some "making-of" documentary and made sure to check the credits to see who did the narration, and that's how I found out his name.
I'm glad he got a little bit of recognition from the public in his final days.

Don had a one of a kind voice that made you want to go see the movies. He was the ultimate promotion for a film. Unfortunately, most of the films couldn't live up to the excitement his trailers generated. So in tribute......In A World.....where movie tickets cost more than a new car.......who will convince the public to spend mass amounts of money to see a film in theatres that they can buy on DVD in a year for 10 dollars?

...created by one man...a world where every movie seemed worth seeing because of his commanding voice. In a world where the voice could make year heart valves pump steam waiting to see the movie that he introduces...the same world feels the pain of monumental loss. Don was a world onto himself, part of the movie experience my whole life. Heaven has a new voice over artist, and our world has been darkend. RIP Don, thanks for the decades of entertainment!
I feel I have lost some of my own voice.

A fan of his work since... forever. Well, since I knew of him, which is I'd like to say circa 1999. That's almost a decade of fandom. Incredible.

I was just talking about him the over day. Can't believe he did that many movies. He will be missed. I was getting excited to spot his voice in some upcoming trailer. I wonder if anyone knows what the last AD he did was.
I feel kind of stupid saying this but,,,

Quint, if you were half the movie fan you clearly envision yourself as, you would have able to tell instantly that the Man doing the V.O. for The Terminator trailer(part 1) is not Don LaFontaine. You should know better. LaFontaine deserves better.

...but there are actually a plethora of voiceover professionals who do the same work for a multitude of trailers/spots [film/tv]. Case in point the man behind the villain Malak in 'Knights of the Old Republic' has done work in this arena... and he's pretty bad ass at it too. But Don has helped jumpstart this style of promotion, and we cannot forget this fact.
