Merlin is the same age as Arthur? Uther and Arthur actually had a father-son relationship? Magic was banned? I wonder how they'll play Uther's rape of Ygraine through magical means. This is completely different from any other version of the tale that I'm aware of. But this is mythology and folklore, so I guess this could be an interesting iteration.

Nobody likes Merlin more than me which may be why this looks terrible IMHO. Why can't they just make up a new young wizard rather than boogering up this legend? Not to mention everyone pretty much knows the ins and outs of Arthurian legend so it seems a waste. I'll try it like I did BBC's Robin Hood. I couldn't watch much of that tripe.

Why must they change the legend? Uther never knew Arthur as he was taken by Merlin at birth. Arthur was raised a peasant, was never noble until he pulled excalibur, then he was king. Merlin and Arthur were never teenage buds, in fact Merlin was Arthur's teacher, never subservient to him. Uther was generally benevolent. God I hate this. Robin Hood screwed up by making him look about 20. Sir Robin should have at least looked like adult who had served years in the crusades.

it does look like a trailer for a gay porno. The boy playig Merlin appears to be fey and soft. He doesnt look tough enough to be a future sorcerer who would sahpe the destiny of Britain. He looks like a boyband member. Very poor and bad casting that i would expect of the US networks. Not the BBC.

So Hollyoaks guy ruined it....
by Chuffy20
Sep 1st, 2008
05:06:02 PM
Okay so the guy from Hollyoaks did kinda ruin it for me, but this is cleary intended to be a family entertainment show. As for all the people moaning about changing the story... it's a myth, not historic fact. Who is to say what the original story was - it has been floating around for hundreds of years. Yes Robin Hood was rubbish, but some of this looked okay. I, as everyone else should do, will hold judgement until I have seen the show.
Oh and Jodet, Authur ap Uther was always nobel born.

Authur was born son of Uther. The whole stable boy thing appears in some of the stories (Once and Future King) that tell of Authur being hidden away from his father enemies by becoming a squire.

The BBC are gonna keep producing these because they had good success with Doctor Who in this format. Unfortunately that means it'll be dumbed down, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will suck. My guess is it'll have a decent premise but they'll struggle to fill episodes with anything worthwhile. It should be David Thewlis as Uther. The young guy playing Merlin is a good actor though. Having him young is appealing to the kids, it has to be done.

Man that was painful. But, on the other hand it's good to see more fantasty based TV being commisioned here in the UK, of which we have the success of Doctor Who to thank for this. Maybe someday they'll get it right. Much like the BBC's reinvention of Robin Hood, Merlin looks like more of the same crap. Everything's nice and colourful and clean and crisp. It's a shame to see two of English mythology's greats, reduced to this utter shite. I'll stick with my Excalibur DVD thank you very much.

I think it looks pretty cool. And why are so many people complaining about how it's not accurate? Really? I didn't realize the Arthurian legends told Merlin's entire backstory. And how does anybody know what age he is? He's a damn wizard, for all we know he could be centuries old by the time he meets Arthur, and just looks young. Heck, from what I gathered from the trailer, Arthur probably won't even appear until late in the series. Dunno, I'm just happy we are getting *two* pure fantasy series this year, after so many years without any at all.

One of the best made-for-TV fantasy movies ever done. Some of the CGI looks a bit dodgy a decade later (even though it featured "bullet-time" gags a year before The Matrix), but that was just a magnificently-produced and acted film. Even moved me to tears in spots.

Hopefully the writing is good. It's an OK promo that shows some interesting and dark possibilities, but they seem to be catering to the aging Harry Potter crowd.

Doesn't look dark enough for me, but that's just me. I like the idea of wizards being hunted down. If they keep up the body count every week, then there's a chance at something. But it looks too bright, too modern, too polished, and too bland.

What's with all the complaints about how this doesn't follow some particular aspect of Arthurian legend? There's like a kajillion different versions and interpretations of the Arthur story; this show may or may not be complete crap, but not adhering to a particular version of the Arthurian legend doesn't seem like an inherent problem to me. I mean, TH White certainly didn't feel compelled to stick exactly to every common aspect of the legend either (and no, I don't think this will be even vaguely comparable to the Once and Future King).

Actually we Brits don't even have one "proper legend" by your definition - the commonly recognised Arthurian story (i.e. Merlin, sword in the stone, etc) originates from France.
