1) You can't bring up "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" and not reference the line, "I got a rock", one of my favorites from any Peanuts specials 2) Time After Time was one of the first truly scary movies I got to see in the theater, very nostalgic for me 3) War of the FREAKIN' Gargantuas is coming out on DVD! When I was really little the Green gargantua used to scare the piss out of me. Damn, it looks like I'm spending some money on DVDs soon.

The American version of "The Office" is outstanding and the "Dinner Party" episode from Season 4 was an instant classic. (You cannot not love Hunter's song that Jan is obsessed with: "That ONE night, you made everything alright...so wrong, so right, all night, all right, oh yeah...") There is only one thing I want out of TRANSFORMERS 2--more of Sam's parents. Julie White's first reaction to finding Megan Fox in her son's room was absolutely priceless. In fact, throw out the action and make the whole thing a comedy. All of my favorite moments from the original are the humor bits. And finally, James Caan's performance in ERASER is really very good--he takes a stock villain and makes him very memorable.

I am one of the few here who digs this movie. Always have, always will. AND finally on Blu-ray! Sure it has it's issue's, but over-all it does it's job as a "popcorn" flik. And the score for that movie is amazing. Definately picking up Eraser, the Jet Li one and the Eastwood stuff. Holy hell so much stuff to buy from last week and this week and next. Harry, you need to watch Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Without a doubt the funniest british sitcom since The Office. Utterly fuckin brilliant. Don't wait for a region 1 release. Get the region 2 now while you can. Great show. Great DVD.

I'm a fan of the original and like many, didn't really like the American version until mid to late second season... One of the turning points was definetly that bit where the "cameraman" ran towards Pam's desk to let her know there was something between Angela and Dwight. Great moment... Anyway, my question is, anyone has rewatched the first and second season after not liking it and getting hooked later? Do the early episodes improve, or do they feel the same as the first time?

If you liked X-Files (the TV show, not the dreadful movies) and Buffy, then you should really like Supernatural. It's built up a neato mythology of its own, while still retaining the "Monster-of-the-week" formula that made those other shows fun to watch. The chemistry between the brothers is also really great - they constantly verbally jab at each other, yet have each other's backs through thick and thing. AND, they play lots of classic rock from the 70s. Despite being produced by McG, it is a pretty solid, fun show. Definitely check it out!

I was just in San Francisco last week and, while driving the 49 Mile Scenic Drive, came across the plaza where HG chased Jack through the Finance Distric. So of course I stopped and took photos. The Palace of Fine Arts was closed due to "seismic reconstruction", so that was a bummer, but a fantastic city (and great movie) nonetheless.

Anybody who says Supernatural is just for the Teenage crowd only looked at the cover and has never watched every episode. The show completely underrated and the mythology is fantastic. I thought the same thing when I saw the cover and knew it was on the CW and avoided it until recently when I got the DVD. I think you will be pretty damn surprised about how good it is. As for the whole, "only for teenagers" thing, they drive around an old muscle car and most of the music besides the actual score, is from 80's metal bands. It's actually interesting that the show decided to go the extra mile and put some character it while not pandering to the bullshit "hits" of today. If they wanted to only hook a teenage audience, they sure as hell wouldn't make the main characters (or at least one of them) a throwback to the late 70's and 80's. I can understand people's apprehension towards it based on first glances... I sure as hell thought the same thing.

- Did someone actually say that they wanted more humor in TRANSFORMERS 2 like in the first movie?! Vern nailed it on the fucking head when he said that the constant stream of campy 'humor' killed the first movie. Here's hoping for some punch-up on the sequel.

- OUTBREAK...hugely underrated movie. Exciting, with great dialogue and one of James Newton Howard's best scores.

- I've heard (mainly at IMDB) people blasting THE PROMOTION. If you've never worked a job like this (esp. one where you come across situations like having to deal with obnoxious customers and they get what they want and you end up looking like a schmuck), of course, it's going to seem terrible. For me, though, it was a pretty good character-based comedy, which is very rare these days.

Took me a while to get into it, so ended up getting the DVD's and thought it was a really good show. I was surprised how dark and gory this show is, but it's biggest strength is it's choice of locations. I believe they shoot the show up near Vancouver which is where they shot those great X-Files episodes. Harry, get the entire series and watch them over a few nights and I guarantee you'll be prancing about in a training bra singing Highway to Hell...Seriously, it's the best horror themed show since Buffy & X-Files ended.

NOT Manderin. Hong Kong speaks Cantonese which sounds a great deal different than Manderin which is Mainland China's official language. Cantonese is a marvelous language on film. Manderin sounds like screeching cats. Abount 99% of Hong Kong films that are not coproductions with mainland China are filmed in Cantonese. THough you would be correct with respect to many of the late 60's to mid 70's Kung Fu films like the Shaw Bros. epics and Early Golden Harvest productions which were mainly dubbed in Manderin. And that's something to grow on!!!

Hey AICN people,

Can't say much about Supernatural, except the few episodes I've seen haven't really grabbed me. I supposed its because I've been spoiled rotten by the new Dr. Who series so badly.

I imagine there's a few Who fans on here who've seen the new version, and most likely love it as much as I do. Its silly, fun, well-acted (mostly), and extremely HARD sci-fi without being too technical. Plus, it helps to have watched all episodes and the ending climaxes (and Christmas Specials) really bring it all together.

WHo doesn't love them some Dalek, Cybermen action? I've tried to get into Torchwood...its OK (worlds better than Supernatural...sorry folks, but it is) but its no Who. Anyone agree, disagree?

And please, I'm not attacking Supernatural...if you're gonna defend it (if you must), please realize I'm comparing it to Who.

Regarding Supernatural

Sep 1st, 2008
02:05:19 PM
Hi Harry, I've been reading AICN for several years now, but this is the first time I've really wanted to comment. I'm surprised that you folks at AICN haven't been all over Supernatural, in a positive way. I've been a fan since the beginning, and it's been decades since I've worn a training bra. Yes, the two lead actors on Supernatural are considered very hot by many female viewers, but don't let that stop you from watching it. It's well-written, acted and directed. Kim Manners is a co-executive producer, and other X-Files and Miracles vets are involved. It's a horror story that's also about the bonds of family. There's plenty of gore, but also a ton of suspense, humor and gripping plotlines. It's about two brothers are on a cross-country roadtrip, trying to find and kill anything evil they can, sort of a family business. They run across a lot of urban legends that turn out to be real. One brother may or may not be the Anti-Christ, but has definitely been tainted with demon blood; the other made a deal with a demon and was literally killed and sent to hell at the end of this past season. Not something you see in your average genre show. Give the first season a try; starting with the third might just be confusing. Despite it being on the CW, this is not a show aimed at teens. Some of the fans get a little overzealous, but I think you see that all the time on this site. Give it a try, and I honestly don't think you'll regret it. Your wife might like it too; if she was a fan of Gilmore Girls, she'll know who Jared Padalecki is, but she might not even recognize him here.

Lang did barely a few days and mostly talked to Dali about the sequence. Neither controlled the final one, although you can see the influence with Lang's clocks and Dali's Persistence of Memory. The important part may be the link to Basevi who, of course, 3 years later can be found doing the art direction on Spellbound. Roadhouse - Lupino aged so much in so short a time and you can hear the drink in the voice 2. Stunning performance, although Widmark owns the last 1/3rd.

I agree with Powers Boothe... the original poster art (used on the first DVD release) with the pocket watch, tiny H.G. Wells and the SF cityscape was pretty cool. The new cover makes it look like an After-School Special. Great film, though... so I'll get this DVD just for the new commentaries.

Supernatural is a quality show. I still don't know why it hasn't gotten the Buffy love on this site. It really filled the tv horror void after Angel went off the air and I now like it more then anything Whedon ever put on the air. I say this because I was a big Xander fan when Buffy first started and I always hoped he would become Dean Winchester instead of the team loser he was always portrayed as.

A little research shows the back cover of this release being almost exactly the same as the previous 'snapper' release. Except... >p< There's an additional name added to the commentary - David Warner. He's not included on the previous commentary; reviews of the previous disk make it clear that the commentary track was assembled from two different audio files, either this is a whole new re-edit of the previous commentary, or an new, additional track.

Can anyone confirm?

That's true of all American adaptations of British sitcoms and Japanese horror films. And CDs sound better than vinyl and CGI is better than conventional FX. The special editions of the original trilogy is a vast improvement and Greedo shot first and missed.

Under Siege 2 is my favorite Seagal Movie, I hope you dig it. I also think the American Office has developed into something much funnier and more complex than the original (as great as it is). As far as Supernatural goes, definitely check it out. It's uneven from episode to episode but when they hit it it's great.

I agree with what you said about Transformers playing better on TV. I hated the movie when I saw it in theatres. I couple of months ago I caught it late at night on HD cable and outright fell in love with it. It's rare that I do a sudden 180 on a movie like that (at least from bad to good) but once I got over that it wasn't what I expected I had a great time watching it... and yes the final battle which seemed nonsensical on screen plays great on a smaller scale.

Too bad that box art is going off on some crazy fucking tangent that is going to mislead people. With stuff like Unforgiven and The Good, the Bad, the Ugly so deeply embedded in the geek hive mind this movie has the potential to kinda sneak up on ya, but the charm of how mundane his character is is what makes him simply doing his duty work in the context of the film, and packaging it like he's some superhero badass pretty much pisses all over that.

I have the first two seasons on boxset and plan on getting S3 as soon as it hits the shelves. It starts of good and gets better with every season as it expands and explores the universe the Winchester boys inhabit. Good monster mashing fun. Tounge in cheek and rocking soundtrack. I think it's a real shame that so many of the *intended* audience for Supernatural seem to be too cynical to even give it a try. The show was made for horror fans, and it seems like everyone in the cast and crew love working on it, and really believe in it. It seems the most vocal part of the fandom, on the internet, are women in their 20s, 30s and 40s. I'm sure part of that is due to the leads being attractive, but if that were the only reason, we wouldn't keep watching. The reason I can't talk more of my friends and acquaintances into watching is because it's too gory and gross for them. I'd like to see more people watching it because it could use better ratings, sure. But I really think a lot of people are missing out on a show that they could really get into if they'd give it a chance. I wonder why people think if someone takes the time and trouble to explain why they like something, that they must be a studio plant? Harry seemed to be asking for opinions on whether *he* might like it, and that's what some of us were responding to.

Remember the more comical episodes of the X-Files ("Bad Blood" for example)? Now take that tone and make an entire series like that, all while spinning a rather mature mythology. Just watch "Very Special" Christmas episode. Or the time-warp episode where the joke is that they acknowledge that "it's just like the movie Groundhog Day" repeatedly. Anyone who say this show is for preteen girls because the two lead characters are young guys, is an idiot. Anyone who automatically dismisses this show because the two lead characters are young guys is also an idiot. Don't dismiss this show until you give it a fair chance. Sam: "You need to update you cassette tape collection." Dean: "Why?" Sam: "For one, it's all 80's hair metal, and two, it's a cassette tape collection!"

and the grenade-thingy that shot spikes in midair. Other than that, not a heck of lot to recommend. But not a heck of a lot on Chuck Russell's resume is there?

Regarding The Enforcer, that Franzetta is the original poster artwork, and no, the movie doesn't come close to that coolness, but they had to spend a fortune on squibs for that movie.

I like Eastwood's pulp period with this and Firefox and The Eiger Sanction, before he got all social and serious. Not to take away from his recent work. He's become a master at his type of work.

First, perhaps my use of "brilliant" was a bit too much. However, I thought the Sandman origin was brilliant and the venom origin was interesting. I also liked Topher's Brock, although it departed from the source material.

All the scenes you cited were rubbish, I agree. I also think the fight scene in Harry's apartment was wrong on a number of levels. I guess, because I saw it a few months after it came out, and my expectations had been so low based upon response, I may have appreciated it more than I would have if I had seen it opening weekend.

Anyone complaining here that Supernatural is for teeny girls definitely has not watched the show and is just blabbering away. Really pathetic. It's as if Dean took their girlfriends. Oh, I forgot, they don't have one.
This is a show for anyone except scared little kids. Dean is one of the best characters ever seen on television. He is the original American badass. The show contains awesome characters, good stories, action, horror, a wonderful rock soundtrack, an awesome car and very cool evil spirits and shit. Angel and Buffy got nothing on Supernatural. Angel, which is seriously awesome, surpassed Buffy and Supernatural surpassed Angel. The Shield and Supernatural are the 2 best shows on television. Accept it from the one who knows.

It is more than likely that Lionsgate did not purchase rights to the Mandarin or Cantonese dubs, rather than just failing to include them. Maybe cost vs. benefit was weighed and it came up tits. Also in regards to Supernatural, the writing is good, they really dig deep to come up with the monster of the week. It isn't too serialized with only 4-5 eps a year devoted exclusively, to the ongoing arc. Acting, as with any tv show heavily relying on guest actors, is very very hit or miss. Production values are average.

Supernatural's Pros/Cons
by The Heathen
Sep 3rd, 2008
07:53:02 PM
Overall, I like it. The pilot was really good, but after that the next 10 or so episodes were super average, even with Amy Acker appearing, etc. However, by the end of the first season I caught up with my DVR and the show quit being one that I'd watch while I read or cleaned, etc.

What's different about Supernatural is that it's actually gotten better progressively as it goes on. I guess it does have it's own little mythology and I like the inclusion of their being more "hunters" than just these two Winchester brothers.

What really makes the show entertaining is the supporting cast, especially the villains and the feeling of "nobody is safe" because they've offed a couple of characters that really had great potential, but I guess that's why them dying works. Also, Bobby is kinda awesome.

I think in the third season they had a few eps like the "Ghost Facers" documentary/Ghost Hunters type of show that was clever and so was the horror movie ep. The third season also had some pretty gory stuff for network tv. That's always nice.

I don't watch the show in HD, but wish I could (does CW even broadcast in HD?)because the blacks are really really dark in a lot of epsiodes and it has a muted look that bugs me visually.

All in all, if you get past the kinks of the first half of the season, I'd say it's worth checking out. Far from the best thing on tv, but also far from the worst. I think it's around the number 14 or 15 spot on the DVR list if that helps.

Oh, and Transformers is still a bad movie. Sorry. I agree with everything Vern said about it.

Harry, please use your considerable influence and contacts to get RED SUN (Charles Bronson, Toshiro Mifune and lets not forget URSULA ANDRESS (undressed?) a new release. This is one flick that leaves a huge hole in my Mifune repertory. It was a National General Pictures release but I have been unable to find out who owns the catalog of their properties. PLEASE HELP A MIFUNE FAN FIND BLISS!!! On a lighter note, I picked up NEXT AVENGERS on a lark yesterday and sat up late to watch it last evening. Even though it skews a little young on the dialog, it hits all of its marks as a MARVEL Universe release. It was cool to see Tony Stark get old and I absolutely agree that the characterization of Bruce Banner as a paranoid hermit living in the desert in fear of his inner monster was a great invention. The kids were portrayed as kids, smart, stupid, funny, moody, confident and scared at all the right moments. LOVED Torunn, daughter of Thor. Wasn't sure if Azari was the son of Black Panther and STORM but it sure looked that way to me. But most importantly, I GOT TO SEE ULTRON!!! Ultron is the most intense of all the Avengers Rogue Gallery and seeing him talk and move for the first time was a real thrill. FIND ME MY RED SUN!!! ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD!!
Outbreak "...one of the less nonsensical ones"

Meaning not AS nonsensical as most. The disease would, among other things, in its later stages liquify your intestines. Nice that the antidote, when given to someone in the final stages of the disease, completely reverses the effects.
Yeah that Outbreak art was always shit
