7th Victim thoughts

All the actors are dull like they suffer from terminal politeness. Even the villains seemed dipped in stiff starch. 90% of the direction is just as bland. There’s one scene that visually prefigures the Psycho shower scene. I wonder if Hitchcock saw it. At 71 minutes it felt like two hours. The ending is random. The sad part is that the story is decent. In different hands it might have been entertaining. Oh, well. Hopefully, The Ghost Ship is better.

It only seems in tune with the universe that there should be an October horror binge.

the one thing I miss most about the old Sci Fi Channel is how they would air both the classic Universal horror films and a lot of cheapo stuff, too all month long in october.

Sales on the older movies can't be too high. So, add them as a bonus feature on new releases. Wanna bring out a 2-disc anniversary edition of Rosemary's Baby? Slap The 7th Victim on that second disc as a bonus. Somebody Up There Likes Me can go with Rocky. The Set-up can go wih Raging Bull, etc. If we're lucky, more people will wake up and learn to appreciate some older movies.

If not, it was just a bad idea.

It‘s actually a good idea

C'mon Quint, you know you want to... On another note, though, I haven't seen anyone pick up on the fact that Ward ("don't be too hard on the Beaver") Cleaver's in this flick. I'll have to put in on my Netflix queue just on this merit alone.

I love this column. Not that I'm going to go out and watch all of these films, but it really gives me some good ideas. As for an interlude of horror films in October, who wouldn't think that's a great idea? I'd love it. A side note, your review of Sound of Music made me watch that film Saturday when it was on TV, and it was wonderful, as always. Too bad for fullscreen.

I hate to say it, but maybe the jag-off troll is on to something. But instead of Van Helsing, maybe the classic universal monsters-Wolfman, Frankenstein, etc. or any of their sequels. That would be good for Halloween. If not, any good old horror movies will do.

... not my favorite of the Lewton horror canon but still a very engrossing and interesting flick. As someone that didn't watch a lot of older films when I was growing up, and having the same view that a lot of people do that films of the 30s, 40s, and 50s were all puritanical, I was really very surprised by the overt Satanism in the flick, as well as the subtext of lesbianism, which is seen betwen the school mistress and the teacher who warns Kim Hunter not to return, and between the sister and her hysterical friend in the Satanic cult. Lewton was raised by women - his mother, aunt, and some sisters perhaps, and thus had an eye toward writing strong women for his films. Lewton also did an uncredited final draft of all the spricts he produced for RKO, which is why they all have such a distinctive and singular voice, and why they all more of less adhere to the theme that "death is good" - a release from hardship and trouble. The paradox of the Satanic cult that doesn't kill its members who transgress against it kind of refelcts that, with the transgressing member gradually seeing suicide as a release from the oppressive expectation of the other members that they'll "do the right thing" and off themselves. That scene toward the end of the picture, where the cult members push poison on the sister, that's a great scene. The tension, and the lighting and the performances really sell it. One other thing - the leader of the cult, whose name escapes me, he's another Lewton player, also turning up in "The Leopard Man" and "The Ghost Ship".

Why does every no-talent pundit think that the world is dying to experience his path of discovery? Quint, see the movies, enjoy them or not, but leave us alone. You've proven throughout this series that your opinions are neither insightful nor entertaining.

I had to think about it - my first reaction was that she'd been offered a tits and ass job. Which, given the time frame, would have taken the film in an intriguing new direction.

Hooray for anything with Enormous Beaumont! He's HUGE!

Due to the random nature of selecting films you haven't seen, I too consider that with no way to save the best for last, a month of horror films might result in overdose or burnout.

Like John Locke's New Otherton, AMAD is not a democracy. if it were, I would cast my vote for the popular and numerologically symmetrical 13-31 plan. Begin on the unlucky 13th and continue to the holiday.

And if you are going to narrow the focus for special cultural events and holidays (IE 12 days of Christmas movies in December) then how about rounding up a dozen of so political oriented thrillers and films to analyze during the first week or so of November, leading up to the historic event.

With all the talk about 24's President Palmer paving the way and McCain's choosing the plot from Commander-In-Chief as his running mate, perhaps you might even focus on a group of filmms featuring female or minority leaders. If 'youth" counts as a minority you could even include "Wild In The Streets".

How long is this going on for....

Take a tangent from Lewton to Tourneur for "Curse of the Demon." In my book it surpasses "CatPeople" and gives us one of the great screen villains - Karswell the satanist.

... which is the superior UK edit of the movie (available on the same disk). Other than that, rgatz has got it right. It's one of the best British horror movies ever made, and Karswell is an awesome villain. It's based on the classic short story "Casting the Runes" by M.R. James, and it perfectly captures James' vision of horrors both subtle and gross. Tourneur kicks major ass!

Taking a tangent from Lewton to Tourneur for "Curse of the Demon" would require that (a) Quint has it in his collection and (b) hasn't watched it yet. He's not just taking requests.

Quint, this column is where people who know how to give their opinion in a mature, non-juvenille, non-judgmenttal of others' opinions go. Keep up the good work. As for October I say pick what you want as we have no idea what's in that behemoth collection of yours.

Gotta mention this. The CineFamily at The Silent Movie Theatre is showing around 50, yes 50, horror movies in October. Everything from silents to Romero, Craven, and Fulci will play.

It's a lot better than reflected in this article. Just my opinion, of course. The subtext of loss and despair really sticks to your ribs. I would love to hear Harry's thoughts on it, and Moriarty's.

The Hays Office basically wouldn't allow them to show the cult members DOING anything, for fear they'd be depicting satanism. Hence why they just seem to sit around and smoke.
