This rampant Ratner hate always present at AICN seems so random. Sort of a solid mid-level director, nothing spectacular, nothing offensively bad. X-Men 3 was not really discernably that different from the others from a directing standpoint, whatever problems it had were on a script level. People talk as if ratner is like Uwe Boll or something, and he's nowhere near that low a level (and neither is he on a high level of any sort). He's just...o.k., and yet AICN acts like he's Satan. He must have rebuked Harry or someone personally on something to bring such a peculiar grudge.

Competent director...The X3 Script was so awful, the only thing that makes that movie watchable to me is the fact that Ratner is a pretty decent, slick action director. You wanna lay the blame for that fiasco on anyone's head, it's fucking Avi Arad, and his "we need more action figures and spin-offs" mentality. The Rush Hour movies? Watchable, fun...not great. Red Dragon? A movie that did not need to be re-made, but, again, watchable. Is Ratner an auteur, groundbreaking, or even clever? Hell no! He's a workman, and a decent one. No reason in the world to be a Ratner "fan," but also no reason to be a hater, either.

This guy and his kind are the reason why we get all these crappy soulless movies, videogame adaptations, superhero franchise shit (Fantastic 4 anyone?)... They will do ANYTHING just to work. Guitar Hero ? OK, sounds fun. Monopoly ? Sure. The Thing The Beginnin ? Not a problem. Ultimately, a guy like Uwe Boll (who makes some of the crappiest movies ever, I agree) is harmless, almost nobody see his movies in theaters. I agree that he gets an excessive amount of hate compared to some far worse directors. The thing is, he's okay but not great, and he goes after big projects. He's sorta Donner-lite. Rush Hour was sorta like Lethal Weapon 4, fun but increasingly out of touch with what people loved about the original. Red Dragon was actually not bad, but the script was pretty solid and he was working with one of the most prestigious casts ever assembled in recent years, all with a clear awareness that this was not a film to fuck up. X-Men 3 was a mess on the script level, yes, but he dosn't even try to make it good. As Quint pointed out recently, very few Hammer films had anything near resembling good dialog yet the directors and actors were competent enough to make it work. There are so many scenes in that film that could have worked better despite how they were written if Ratner had stepped up. He didn't and that's why he isn't spared bile along with the producers and writers. After the Sunset wanted to be Thomas Crown Affair 2 so bad it was kinda disgusting. The film looked pretty in a decent rental night sort of way, but again, nothing really exciting. So yes, he's a more middle tier director than a hellspawn of crap. Here's the thing though, he goes after big movies. His name has been or almost been attached to a lot of movies of late that fans want GREAT directors for. Ratner = mediocre rental, to dull night hey lets go to the theater movies. He's hated because he represents that cranked out brand of film, he's shown that he's reliable to get the job done, but I haven't seen him do anything yet to trust him with something I have any deep investment in. If he got his hands on an original script and made a really knockout film, then I'd give him a chance, but I haven't seen that happen yet. So yes, I'm glad he is doing stupid Wizard/Rockstar ripoffs that I probably will never see more of than the trailer.

That You Tube clip was rediculous. As some have pointed out here before, Michaelangelo never worked in ivory, which is animal tusk, but stone, which is found in quarries and stuff. He also dabbled in painting on damp church plaster. Also, may I say that the idea of a kid playing Guitar Hero and then going and becoming a rock god is a lame story. If he needs to do a Guitar Hero movie, why not use the plot of the game: a bunch of chariactures of rock and roll archetypes get in bands and try to make it big by playing covers. I'd not mind seeing a movie where Judy Nails and the rest play bad Ted Nugent and Fog Hat covers against other rediculous characters.

Both those movies were based off of the same book. If there are any similar scenes, they are straight adaptations from scenes in the novel. In fact Red Dragon is much closer to the book than Manhunter. Manhunter was a stylish film, no doubt. Sometimes obnoxiously so. Ratner did Red Dragon so it could bookend the "Hannibal" trilogy and be similar in tone and feel. He's not an "unoriginal, incompetent fuckwad". He's just average, and certainly not deserving of those kinds of insults.

That's the problem with Ratner. He takes properties like Hannibal Lecter and makes them basically family friendly, safe, PG13, gutless. He's not awful, but he's completely bland, and represents the middle-of-the-road, focus tested, family safe, nothing-spectacular philosophy that studios have these days. All these people defending Ratner, do you really LIKE Ratner, or just want to hate on AICN? Name five Ratner movies that you don't think were completely bland and forgettable, I triple dog dare you.

Yes I am. Anyway, Red Dragon is defendable, it's better than that Hannibal: Year One movie (Miles and miles better), but it's not really fit to stand beside Silence or even Hannibal. Rush Hour's amusing, but not fit to stand beside any of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong movies (that may be being a bit unfair, though, the US film industry isn't equipped to make those kinds of movies). X3 can't stand beside Xmen 1 and 2, etc. Again, it's not that he sucks, it's that he's the go-to guy for mediocre studio cash-ins. If a studio doesn't really care if the movie's good so long as it's "up to par", they'll use Ratner. Honestly, I actually admire his professionalism. I just don't think there's anything in the least bit exciting or interesting about his movies, unless those movies are kind of piggybacking on something like the fact that Jackie Chan's in them (And Chan directs his own action scenes, really), or that hey, it's still got Wolverine. I don't hate him, I just think he's kind of unnecessary.

It's more like that he represents the eagerness of Hollywood money-holders to make movies that are just good enough to sell tickets, sell a few DVDs, and then quickly disappear. Admittedly, there are a million guys just like him, and singling him out is kind of stupid, but he's kind of high profile for getting all the big properties.
