Last line is 'Hey Kids. There's a storm coming'. Spoken by Vin Diesel. Got the biggest laugh (for all the wrong reasons) of the film. Believe the reviews, this film is the worst sci-fi action movie I have EVER seen. Amateur in every respect. Do not even bother watching it on DVD or on TV. Ever!

...but I wanna see if anyone agrees, so I'll say it again. Does anyone else think Vin Diesel actually has a bit of talent in him? If he stopped doing crap like 4Fast4Furious and fucking Pacifier, he could shine. Not like some other great actors, but every so often I see a bit of potential light up. As for this... well, what do you expect? Fox is in a load of shit this year, their one heavyweight - X-Files - was a catastrophe I don't think anyone really saw coming (I expected it to fail, but not by THAT mucH), they're taking shit over Watchmen, fucking up with the Wolverine sets, and basically being utter toolsheds.

He's been offered everything under the sun. He could've been Conan's son in Milius' KING CONAN but walked away bcs of his sense of importance. He could've had the assassin role in Collateral opposite Jude Law but walked away. He's the worst kind of douche... he overvalues his sense of self. He thinks he's a thespian when he should've and could've been the next big action star. To make things worse, he's a fake modest guy. In interviews he comes off as Mr. Aw-shucks I'm just a D & D nerd but in real life he's a selfish, egotistical turd who turns his back on his friends of 20 years. Every person that ever worked for him has walked away from his One Race shingle, which is run by a skeleton crew: Vin and his sista. You reap what you sow Vin-dog. Van Damme and Seagal are about to have some company on the DTV shelf... Hey Kids, there's a shit storm coming.

I agree. I always felt he was the better aspect of his bad movies, and he put in a great performance in FIND ME GUILTY. The problem with Diesel, and The Rock, is that they're action stars in a time of mostly poor action films for bulky men. Unfortunately, because of their physique it's probably a lot harder for them to find the James Bond or Jason Bourne action roles. I think if you extract Diesel, or The Rock from any of their bad films and insert a more reputable actor the movie would still be bad, and in some cases worse.

Aug 26th, 2008

Knowthyself is right: it's amazing anything good gets made. Ever. I think the quality we do have is mostly due to the great and highly professional crews that work in LA. The below the line people are salvaging any credibility the industry has. Read Mamet's book Bambi vs Godzilla some time. Mamet says the below the line crew works their ass off every day to make the movie as close to perfect as it can be and the above the line people don't give a shit. I've said it before, the major studios were all founded by and run for decades by people who loved movies. Did they make the occasional stinker back then? Of course they did. Now the studios are run by people who have no clue about movies, film history, anything. Today the studios only want to make big tentpole movies. There was a great LA Times article about this a couple of weeks ago, how Warner Bros. has all these finished New Line films that they may bury because they don't know how the hell to sell them. The studios are run by people who think grosses = quality -- if a movie makes money then it must have been good and if it loses money it must have been bad. Last years Warners buried their exceedingly well reviewed Jesse James movie that starred ONE OF THE BIGGEST MOVIE STARS ON THE FUCKING PLANET because they didn't like it and had no idea what to do with it. Jesse James went on to get major Oscar nominations in spite of their idiocy in handling it. If it weren't for the Oscars and these mouthbreahers wanting the glory of winning awards, the quality would be even worse. This is why some of the best on-film storytelling is being done on cable TV.

This quote sums up exactly what's wrong with Fox's way of making movies. THANK YOU! "Innumerable agents have complained to me that Fox doesn't want filmmakers--it wants no-name traffic cops to direct its movies. Here're the people who directed the studio's 2007 summer films: James Wan, Tom Brady, David Silverman, Len Wiseman, Tim Story and Carlos Fresnadillo. I bet some of them are genuinely nice guys, but there's not a Warren Beatty or Tim Burton in the bunch."

I think there is a huge need out there for the studios to start making high quality mainstream movies. One of the reasons Dark Knight has done so well is that it's really good. This is what should happen all the time: the studio hires a director and they get the fuck out of his/her way. I don't know if this Vin Diesel movie we are discussing would ever be a good movie, but you can see what studio interference does -- rarely does it make a movie better.

I really hate it when these dumb asshole execs ruin a great visionary tale by getting involved in their development. The worst part is, they keep churning out these shitty films, and they see dwindling turnouts at the box office, so they think people don't want to see sci-fi action flicks anymore. That means they're less inclined to give a larger budget to this type of movie. They're too ignorant to understand that they have forgotten how to make a great movie. The actors these days SUCK!! The directors these days SUCK!! There are, of course, exceptions to the rules...but there are no Harrison Fords anymore, no George Lucas, and no Spielbergs anymore. Even these former greats are only a shadow of their former selves now. The sci-fi genre is doomed. But, to be fair, the first sign of a shitty movie is the inclusion of Vin Diesel. Chronicles of Riddick was the exception, but he can never be forgiven for XXX.

Can you think of an actor who has made worse career choices than Diesel. It was the IT action star after Fast and the Furious and he followed it up with XXX and A Man Apart. He got lucky with the Pacifier, but blew it with the Chronicles of Riddick. Chronicles of Riddick wasn't a horrible movie, but it was a big budget loser that probably should have been a new franchise since it really didn't seem to fit into the Pitch Black universe.

I am dead serious about doing that. The biggest theater near me will be about half full of the typical frat boy's and there girlfriends who probably saw the the trailers for this movie during "The Hills" or " E! news " and can't wait for the new masterpiece from the people that brought us Meet The Spartans. What they don't realize is that as soon as the theater gets dark and they are busy doing a running commentary on every fucking trailer and commercial on the screen......I will be unleashing two days worth of disgustingly bad eating habits in front of them on the floor.

Hire a bunch of Z-grade and television directors to churn out your slickly produced crap with no creative input. Then the A-List directors and directors with vision should form their own studio/company that allows them to create the films they want to make.

Most of us movie fans know that Fox is one of the worst studios out there and that Rothman is a moron. So how come that Kassovitz, someone who actually works in the industry, didn't know this? And just went ahead and set up a project with them. It's a damn shame but I think he should have known better.

Problem
by Cobbio
Aug 27th, 2008
08:18:27 AM
Vin Diesel isn't the problem here, in my opinion. Though I haven't liked several of his films, I still think that, if used properly, he does good work.

The problem here is Fox. Meddling, small-minded, anti-artistic, lawyered-up Fox. My fucking god, leave your directors alone! Advise occasionally, but let your fucking directors direct. Because armchair lawyering ruins films, on both the creative level and at the box office.

See a pattern here, Fox? Not one hit this entire year? What's up with that? "The Dark Knight" and others making your studio look like braindead, micromanaging bitches? The answer: yeah, they are. And then some. Other studios offer better policies, more creative freedom, less bean counter strong-arming, less American Idolizing, and wider thinking among its higher-ups. I'm not saying the other studios are saints, by any means, but compared to Fox they are.

I feel bad for David Fincher ("Alien 3") and Mathieu Kassovitz. I wish them well in their post-Fox endeavors.
