Dear Mr. Nolan: Avoid the missteps of JEDI, SPIDER-MAN 3, MATRIX REVOLUTIONS, and X-MEN 3 missteps altogether and call it a day. Sometimes I think it's better to be left wanting than to get a product which doesn't top its predecessor.

I was no where close to being sold on Heath Ledger as The Joker. I agree that Cher as Catwoman is the worst idea. I don't want to even dwell on it. At this point though, whoever is the next villan is going to be compared to Ledger, and that's rough.

Each of Nolan's films has had an underlying theme. Part 1 was exploring Fear. part 2 was the thin line between civilization and chaos. Part 3 should focus on how Cobblepot/Penguin is the mirror opposite of Wayne/Batman. Both rich. Both lost their parents. One uses his company to do good while fighting crime at night. One uses his riches unethically and immorally while being a criminal at night. Gotta be Penguin!

post rumours from the Daily Telegraph? In addition to this rumour the paper also recently suggested that Brittany Spears is being cast in a QT version of faster Pussycat Kill Kill.
I swear their film journalists are either too lazy to find any real news and are just making it up (much like all the other cunts that work on the paper), or that they simply take as gosple the fake news stories that peddlers of Viagra and Porn are using to bypass spam filters.

Okay here's my top picks. Joker: Guy Pearce. Riddler: Philip Seymour Hoffman. Penguin: Danny Devito (I know he's already done it but, really, who else?). Catwoman? Okay this is the toughest one but my top picks would be Reese Witherspoon, Helena Bonham Carter, Natalie Portman or Kate Winslet. That's my two cents.

It will be fun to see how retarded these rumors are going to get. The same shit goes on with cult TV series during their summer hiatus. I remember hearing theories for smallville that Chloe was Lois. And some pretty goofy theories on who the next cylon might be on BSG. It just goes to show how unimaginative the general public is and why people like Nolan get to be at the reigns instead of everyday joe. Because Everyday Joe wants to give Batman a rocketpack and make love to sarah michelle gellar as batgirl 200ft above gotham city. Fanfiction sucks, but it's funny-bad.

Oops - accidently pressed enter there...

The Dark Knight was a perfect self contained film that didn't end with the purpose of setting up a seqel.

They didn't leave it open ended (unless open ended is Batman being alive), which means any casting for a sequel will be a LONG way off as one hell of a script needs to be written first.

OK, because of all the money it made, WB WILL want a sequel but I can't see Nolan and crew rushing into it just yet. They've created a master piece with The Dark Knight, they won't hurry out a sequel that could dampen their reputation. It's going to be a VERY hard film to top - if there is a third film, it'll be a while coming as it would have to be perfect.

the notion is just too retarded. Plus the rumor started in one of those British rags, which seem to have a reputation of making up bullshit like this. Just as crazy is the fact that fans are even reacting to it at all when it should be ignored. Chris Nolan hasn't even said yet that he would return to direct a third film, so I'm sure there are no concrete story ideas yet. I would like to to see Two Face return, and Reaper and Black Mask make appearances too. I'm not interested in Catwoman, Riddler or Penguin and I don't think the Nolans are either.

...to be with Nolan! Batman 3 will come out because Dark Knight made $500 million dollars and probably more as it runs out. WB will make sure it gets made...might as well have Nolan and Goyer helm and finish the job...rather than have studio execs ruin the whole thing!! Either way it's gonna be made! I'd rather see it get made by the same crew than get fucked up by the execs. Nolan will make it, as well...just so his series doesn't end up ruining his whole body of incredible work and storylines he developed. Besides...he left it open for more. As for the villians...Catwoman stinks...she brings nothing. She's been tried twice and only provided a hot chick in leather..which isn't bad to look at...but sucks to watch in action. There will be a Batman 3...and even if not as good as TDK...Nolan and co. and make it great in its own right.

Even if Christopher Nolan doesn't make another Batman film, he'll have made a great contribution to the Batman franchise and cinema in general. If he does make another one, I imagine it working as a stand-alone, just the way the first two did. Still, he could always bring back villains from the first films - the League of Shadows or the Joker. They could also have Batman take on contemporary terrorists, like on the TV show 24.

Catwoman would just suck . Seems best to take one of the lesser known villians and turn them into ruthless crime lord as already said . Unless you want to go serial killer with the Riddler . Anything else and it would suck. ( serial killer riddler would prolly suck ) I am of the opinion that the Nolan's ( if they choose to do a 3rd film ) will at least put out something at the level of the first one and surprise us with interesting and realistic brutality and nihilistic villian.

are you fuckers kidding me? BB and TDK were both awesome, why for fuck's sake would you not want a third? Because it can't be better then TDK? first of all that's false, DK is awesome but the second time I saw it I was bored for decent portions of the film, it's too long and the third act is weak (this has all been said before) so its by no means perfect at all, just really, really good. That can be topped, and even if it cant, a third film will still be better (if nolan returns to direct anyway) then 95% of what else is out there and 99% of the genre. If Nolan directs there is no possibility for a colossal failure on par with SM3(raimi is tired of the franchise, as is tobey and it showed, plus the whole venom fiasco) and X3 (brett ratner anyone?) so enough with the no third batman film, it's idiotic and baseless

I was one of those people that didn't get Heath Ledger as the Joker until I saw the first trailer when I realised Christopher Nolan must have seen something in his auditions that the rest of us had never seen him do. It turned out to be inspired casting. Johnny Depp is a brilliant actor, but unlike Ledger who had never really shown us his true A game until "Dark Knight," Depp has been giving one amazing performance after another for the last 10 years, and won't likely be able to surprise everyone with a shockingly original performance like he did in the first "Pirates" film. I think the only way to portray the Riddler in Nolan's universe is to draw inspiration from the Zodiac killer and make him a serial killer who enjoys sending cryptic messages and ciphers to the cops to taunt them. Depp has created a romantic screen image for himself that he would need to totally abandon to sell this. As far as Cher goes, wow, I would have never thought of her in a million years. I almost feel sorry for the film makers who have to try to top "Dark Knight." Look what happened to "Spider-man 3."

I totally hated Heath Ledger as an actor. He really rubbed me the wrong way. That being said, his Joker totally proved me wrong as far as his acting abilities are concerned. I thought he was GREAT as the joker, but I don't think the huge success of TDK was all his. I really have to give props to the writers and to NOLAN for a fantastic plotting and direction. This is what I think truly made TDK great! I think as cast a true actor as opposed to a movie star as the next villain, NOLAN can crank out something really great!

Recast? Why Not!
by Frisbeetarian
Aug 25th, 2008
05:29:06 PM
Let's look back. Batman has been recast several times. As has the Joker. Why not do it again? Now, I know the main argument is "It's such an iconic performance, would be impossible to duplicate." and I agree. So don't duplicate it. Take advantage of the ground work already laid out in the comics. Take advantage of the theory that Joker develops and all new personality and look every few years. Pick a new actor, and not just because they have longish hair and a similar look to Heath (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Johnny Depp. This is why we're not casting directors). Let the filmmakers find someone who THEY think can handle the role. Just like they did 2 years ago and half the internet got their panties up their ass because Nicholson was IRREPLACEABLE and this was a TRAVESTY and it was going to be Brokeback Mountain 2. "lol fags". Just don't rule out the idea, because when it comes to another movie, I think it's necessary that Joker be there, and that isn't just the fanboy in me talking, it just makes sense.

A morphing Joker fits his demonic personality. I dunno, though, who else? Depp is too zany, he couldn't do it. Anyways, theres something supernaturally evil about the Joker in TDK even though Nolan's world is firmly rooted in grim reality, there is something superhuman about the Joker in that film... PLus Ledger fucking STEALS the whole movie. He ruled as the Joker. Whoever steps up, if anyone, those are gonna be hard boots to fill...

Two great films, a third one is unnecessary. The Joker's line about him and Batman "doing this forever" is great closure to the two films. And a third film would have to ignore the Joker due to Ledger's sad death. Hopefully Nolan will realise that the only reason to do a third one is money and gracefully pass. Then Warner can hire a hack a la Joel Schumacher and ruin the series all over again, thus making us appreciate the first two even more.

I don't understand this stance, aren't comic book movies ideal for multiple sequels because of their villian-centric plots and endless source material? Star Wars, Alien, Terminator, etc. had unified plots that didn't necessarily benefit from multiple sequels. Batman is like James Bond: new villian, new movie, very little running plot. If Nolan is willing to direct and the writing stays strong, there's nothing to keep Batman from becoming a Bond-like franchise, IMO.

Johnny Depp is the only actor capable of ATLEAST matching what Ledger did in Knight. Who knows, with an actor of that calibre, the team they have behind the lens and the cast to feed off of, Johnny Depp may bring something to the table that may match the Dark Knight. Whatever they decide, it is damn near impossible to top the second film, so just try match it. And if you don't get me quite yet, third film=Riddler, Riddler=Depp. Nuff said

Just go totally for broke...introduce a brand new villian that just tears up Gotham City and leaves behind huge body counts. Move the Joker more behind the scenes and use him very sparingly, whoever said that above was right on. Just keep building the action higher and higher and then at the end, have Batman/Bruce die while stopping the villian. Basicly, break all the rules and make it so NO ONE is safe. That's how I would do it.

First, perspective -- I personally didn't like BB and didn't see anything starring Ledger where he rocked my socks. The first few leaked pics of him betrayed a hungry for Chef Boy-Ar-Dee look that did nothing to quell my concerns. Despite this, TDK -- and Ledger -- has more than lived up to the hype.

My gut reaction is that Cher was too old to play this character when Michelle Pfeiffer was cracking the whip. Now, I have no stake in Nolan since he's 1 for 1 with me on the Batman mythos. While I didn't care for BB, his interpretations of the Gotham's villains have been satisfying thus far. I'm intrigued to see where he's going with this.

But then, this is likely all bullshit floated our way just to gauge the fan base's reaction. I mean -- Nolan has leaned heavily toward the angle of realism. Does he honestly think we'd buy into master catburglar by night, senior citizen by day? Even if the suits believe it bankable, would Cher even agree do it? I doubt it.

in my humble opinion -- Dina Meyer, Dina Meyer, Dina Meyer, DINA MEYER!!!

I'd also like to see Bane done as he was orginally intended (an evil Doc Savage)not a goon but maybe a mercenary brought in by the gotham underworld (or maybe Gotham's own goverment)and he brings his whole team of freakish yet capable henchman. No Catwoman, though, please no, the second she shows up the movie becomes all about her and trying to spin her off, so please God of Brothers Warner leave her out....amen.

I'm sure we'll see a catwoman pop up in the Bat film, but it is amazing how many people just assume the joker died with Ledger. Yes it was a great performance, but if Nolan and company are going to go to such pains to recast Rachel Dawes and not simply write her out after losing Katie Holmes why in God's name would he dismiss batman's single biggest antagonist. I read an interveiw with Nolan before BB even came out where he said the single biggest mistake of many which the Burton films made was killing off the Joker. It may be a while so that it wont be seen as insensitive but The Joker will be back!

Picture it, Gotham is being slowly bought out by a giant multi-faceted corporation with a creepy penguin logo. During one of it's secretly evil business dealings, Morgan Freeman's character is murdered. At night, batman is trying to uncover the murderer, while in the day is stuck filling the void of running his own company. On a rainy day, Bruce has a meeting with Oswald Cobblepot (Hoffman), the head of Penguin enterprises, to repremand him for his corporation's unfair business record. That's when Oswald, on the other end of a very long table, tells bruce in front of everyone that he knows he is Batman. That he found this out when he murdered freeman, and that Batman is now going to work for him. Before Bruce can even stand up, all of penguin's men whip out their umbrella machine guns and lay waist to everyone on the other side of the table. To save his city, Batman is forced into hunting down two of the penguin's "disgruntled" employees from his science and research division; a genious female botonist (chick from Enchanted), and the former head of the cryongenics department who fell victim to his own work (Terry O' Quinn's perfect). From there, aliances will be made and broken, etc., and Gotham will once again be the battleground blah blah. And the finale should take place in the newly renovated batcave, which will be this futuristic bad-ass, frank lloyd wright looking set of awesomeness that will forever change our perception of what the batcave is supposed to look like. there I'm done.

We are all assuming one maybe two villians because of our painful memories of previous Batfilms and spidey 3; but Raimi was the one with the admitted hangups about multiple villians but Bats is all about the Rougues Gallery. Look at the seminal Batman arcs which also have a definate influence on Nolans's Batman. Long Halloween, Knightfall, Hush etc while having one antagonist are all stories with Bats confronting multiple opponents. Take the theme of escalation and have a whole city full of madmen wreaking havoc ina an enviroment created by Batman's precense is much more interesting than villians waiting their turn to attack like an extra in a Bruce Lee flick striking one at a time

sokitome:
whilst the success for TDK is not all on Ledger, it's unrealistic not to pin a good chunk of that opening weekend on not only the hype surrounding his performance, but also his untimely death. i know it sounds callous, but it was his death that put a lot of butts in those seats in those first three days to see the movie that(due to a ton of bullshit sensationalistic reporting) many people thought contributed to his "suicide." from there the positive word of mouth due to it genuinely being an excellent film carried it to the #2 all time BO slot it holds now.

misnomer:
go on wikipedia and read up on Alien3. people initially hated it for not being "Aliens Part II" because that's what they were promised in the "On Earth, everyone can hear you scream" ad campaign that Fox pushed in the teasers. i agree, Alien3 was an awesome movie, and if Fox would have backed Fincher and let him do his damned job it probably would have held up admirably in the series. the problem was not that it wasn't a good film, but that it had to follow up two films that totally redefined genres(action/SciFi) when they weren't busy creating new ones(scifi/horror). Alien3 stands up as a film, but didn't really bring anything new to the series. it drastically lowered the stakes from Aliens, and took a much more intellectual route, which is exactly the opposite of how it was marketed.

Catwomen, The Riddler, Part Three
by loserguy3000
Aug 25th, 2008
06:40:10 PM
Hey folks,

I think its fairly obvious that Catwoman is going to be in the next chapter, as the second film couldn't have been more blatant with the 'clues'. The first was Lucius' remark that the new Bat-armor would defend not against dogs, but "against cats." D'oh!

Also (and I'm assuming everyone here saw TDK), the main female lead was killed, thereby leaving a gaping hole (no pun intended) for the requisite pussycat to come out and play. Like it or not, Catwoman is perhaps the second-most popular villain(?) in the Bat-universe after the Joker, and there's no way that WB is going to let that momentum die away.

As far as casting goes...who the fuck knows? AICN got the Joker so incredibly wrong its pathetic, so for all you fanboys out there thinking you 'know the perfect face', shut the fuck up. You wouldn't have guessed Ledger in a million, billion years. This is the place that suggested Crispin Glover. Crispin Fucking Glover, for god's sake...whom we all know by now sucks balls. No fucking way. Ledger was legendary, and should forever show that talent should come first over 'looks'.

That said, the obvious choice on 'looks' is Jolie as Catwoman, but I'd like to see a more inspired cast. So fuck no Helen Bonham Carter or any goth-chick fantasies, please. Maybe get someone a tad less pretty and you've sold me...but I trust Nolan by now.

For the record, and because I'm a total hypocrite, my vote for The Riddler is David Tennent. You know, the current Dr. Who? Besides the fact that he rocks the boat, he's already under a WB contract (he was in Harry Potter IV), and he kicks ass on the show. Plus, he replaced Chris Eccelson, who'll be playing Deastro in the upcoming GI Joe movie, so the geek circle-of-potential is definitely there.

What do you think, Who fans... anyone agree? Disagree?

in other comments and I think people are missing the fact that she'd make a perfect Harley Quinn. She's funny, self deprecating, and cute so she'd make a lot of sense in that role. Again that would need a new Joker, hopefully to be played by either Johnny Depp or Paul Bettany. If someone else was going to take up the Joker mantle they could always do an homage to the Burton Batman and have him undergo plastic surgery. Whatever... Faris as Dr. Harleen Quinzel is a win.

Yeah, I realize it's loopy on the surface, but I think it could work rather well.

It fits within Nolan's established "realism" angle. Well, as realistic as a world with microwaves triggering laughing gas can be (and Gordon driving the Batmobile).

Hoffman would be perfect for the role. He's not Cobblepot. I applaud you, Circean6.

Lastly, doubtless BB3 (or TDK2) will be post-Watchmen, and Hoffman as Ventriloquist could be a satisfying reveal ala Watchmen's... wᷠell, you know. It's something that could be played up big-time. And considering Hoffman's love of film, I'm sure his ego wouldn't get in the way of the film. You know, where the talent demands X-amount of maskless screen time (I'm looking at you, Spider-Man 2 and Ghost Rider).

Genius. Unfortunately, that's a character that can only work in comic and animated form. TV perhaps. Yet I really feel where you're coming from. there would be a significant lack of built-in ice skates, ice-puns, evil plants, and whining. They wouldn't even go by freeze or ivy, and the closest thing to a costume would be Hoffman's monocle and top-hat, which I think he could pull off. O'Quinn and Enchanted would be far more nuanced in their evilness since they'd be the enemy of batman's enemy, but they'd still go off the deep end towards the end. what would your guys' plan be?

did you ever post on IMDB as AlexDiMera, because i haven't heard shit as stupid as your posts since that little tool wrote a fanscript sequel to BB suggesting Ra's as the main villain, Scarecrow in full costume with Flass as a henchmen, "Talia Head" as the main romantic interest, and a full backstory for the Joker. seriously, none of what you've written comes close to the Nolan tone in any way, shape, or form. what you're suggesting is taking the tone of BTAS and making it dark for darkness sake. there's a reason you're not a professional screenwriter, now kindly fuck off.

and to respond to the inevitable and utterly meaningless "so what's you're plan?":

hope like hell that WB has the good goddamned sense to let Nolan do another non-Batman movie in between sequels, and pay him whatever the fuck they have to to get him on board to finish the trilogy. after that, i plan to support whatever the hell decisions Nolan makes. plan B is to decry the whole franchise if they try to rush part three and kick Nolan off.

Catwomen...what kind of villian could we see ON screen if they decided to use her? Obviously a love interest, but for who? Bruce Wayne or Batman? Can't have both, cause Brucey and Bats are treated literally as two different people in this newer, better batman world. besides all that, what kind of threat does she really pose? STD's? lol, but seriously, what? She's a jewel theif. Then again, with what Nolan has done for us has been great none the less and I would be a little disapointed if he chose to use her as a central villain. I mean, from a terrorist who believes us all to be liars and fakes to a jewel theif? What could Catwomen bring to the table...unless she fell in love with the bat ala 'Fatal Attraction' style. But who the fuck wants to see that? Oh, but for a choice of Catwomen?...Kate Beckinsale, why? She's gorgeous, can do some action scenes and has a very seductive and sexy voice, to which i think can be the opposite of bat's lucifer-like voice. Then again, i might be thinking too much into this.

Batman, on the run from the law, takes on the mob, who gets taken over by a new kingpin mob nickname "The Pequin" after he put a hit on Sal Moroni. The Penquin mostly keeps his hands clean of the brutal murder he inforces, but Nolan could build on themes he set up in the previous films, by forcing Batman to break his own rules to investigate The Penquin, by making it seem necessary to kill, spy on people, and torture in order catch the bad guy. The Penquin could be tragic character, alot like Tony Soprano, he's a little crazy, flamboyant, but he's just a man trying to live the American dream through organized crime that Gotham City created. He has a hitman too, a very effecient, very mysterious, very cold, former arykam resident simply known as "Riddler".

I hear what you're saying. the shit still has to be held down in the real world, but, it also has to up the ante and get the imagery in there. An umbrella machine gun for the sake of it is full-retard. But if your plan is to kill a room full of business men and you have to sneak the guns to the top floor of Wayne tower, then there is some sort of reasoning for it. The rest of the villans are rediculous in one way or another. The trick for nolan is to find the most realistic situation that could yeild a villan as far-fetched as possible.

Actually, after the awesomeness that was Dark Knight, I don't think there really is a way to do a straight follow-up. For my money, I'd like to see a 40-years-later Batman story with Clint Eastwood as a retired, lonely, bitter, dying Bruce Wayne. Gotham is clean and peaceful, the Batman's work is done. Then a series of horrific Joker-like murders begin and someone claiming to be (and actually is) the Joker wants one last go-round with the Dark Knight. The whole thing works out in a Holmes / Moriarty chess game to the death of both. Probably the only thing that could go darker than Dark Knight. Then come back with Bale in #4

sequel/Catwoman/Joker re-cast
by stickmangrit
Aug 25th, 2008
07:20:38 PM
look, this movie is the second highest grossing film of all time, THERE WILL BE A SEQUEL. WB is not going to sit on this franchise out of artistic integrity, they're going to get some fucking bills paid, so get over any concepts you might have of this being the last Bat-film. the good news in all of this is that that whole cast is loyal enough to Nolan that WB won't be stupid enough to try and rush part 3 without him. Oldman didn't want to do part two, and you know good and goddamned well he won't be back for anyone but Nolan. Caine, Freeman, and Bale all have stable enough careers to say "fuck this" and walk if Nolan's not brought back. this is to say nothing of the fact that any movie Nolan does in the interim will likely contain enough of the main cast to block any forward movement on Batman 3(just like Prestige). so long as the current creative team is in charge and WB continues to give total creative freedom to Nolan, we'll get a good sequel. if they start forcing shit on him he doesn't want, it will blow(Venom in SM3). i believe in Christopher Nolan, and so should you.

as for Catwoman and Joker's further appearances, i repeat: i believe in Christopher Nolan. if he's still got plans in the story for Joker, then i trust him to find a replacement for Ledger, just like he did for Holmes. if he wants to use Catwoman, then that's awesome. the story's at a perfect place to introduce her character however Nolan want's to do it. that being said, i would humbly suggest the Jim Lee version as the best costume model: protective leather catsuit with goggles and a full headpiece with cat ears, all you need. and i heartily lobby for Robin, but if that's not the way he wants to go, that's fine by me, and that stands for the previous two points as well. this man has delivered the quintessential Batman origin, and the quintessential Joker movie. as a director overall he is 5/6 in my book, and that's only because i haven't seen "Following." every other movie he's made has varied from good to fucking genius. and there is nobody i trust outside of him to follow up TDK.

what villains could possibly one-up the Joker and Two-Face? I mean for this generation, those are arguably the best. Sure, Catwoman would be awesome, but after TDK I'm not sure how she could hold a film alone. This is really the same problem Spider-man had. How do you one-up Doc Oc? I mean, sure, I bet spidy fans will give me a list of better villians. After all even the Joker and Two-Face came later and slowly reached their iconic status, but if you asked a random person who Spider-man and Batman fought, hands down they would say Doctor Octopus and The Joker. I mean, I thought Two-Face was going to be dealt with more in the third one, which would have left them some room for a solid trilogy. At this point I don't really see that happening. So who is left? I love Croc, but he's the brute for another's brains. Ivy is fun and all, but too fantasy I think. Mad-Hatter is pushing it too and doesn't really work. Mr. Freeze missed his chance to shine and isn't getting another. Penguin is a great classic, but god, how would you retool him to make sense in Nolan's world? Really, there is only one villain that could go against Nolan's Batman at this point that would really scare me. If the mob and the pissed off chinese sent BANE after Batman... THAT WOULD WORK. Sure, have catwoman, maybe even make scarecrow supply Bane's drugs... but if Nolan sent the man who broke the bat after him, that would be tense. That would be a fight fans would fear, because as dark as Nolan has gone with these films, I doubt him to do ANYTHING with Bane. That's the best I can think of anyway. Even if he did go that rout, one upping TDK would be next to impossible.

Is a great idea - Nolan already paid homage to Mann's "Heat" (the more times I saw TDK I realised the Ledger is VERY "Crazy' Pacino in it) why doesnt Nolan pay homage to Fincher - Zodiac is one of the most criminally underrated crime thrillers of recent years -an absolutely brilliant film, which is also technically astounding. So if they go dwo nthat road of a serial killer type Riddler why not go with Micheal C. Hall (Dexter) as Riddler. I picture him with question mark tattoos all over him (kind of like the dude in Nolan's Memento) and absolutely no sign a stupid fucking eyemask. Superman vs. Batman

The Dark Knight leads into a perfect opportunity for a Superman vs. Batman. Superman is dispatched to Gotham to rid the city of the evil (perceived) Batman only to find that the Joker has orchestrated the whole event. Two Face (who we find out is alive) knows a secret (namely that Rachel Dawes was going to marry Harvey Dent) that will devastate Bruce Wayne. The Superman/Batman film would only work if the Joker returns. I think someone else can play the role.

I don't believe celebs will ruin anything. Sure, a persons celebrity status could ruin it for us fucked up geeks, but c'mon, if the fucker can pull it off, why the hell not? I'm not saying get fucking lohan as catwomen or brad pitt as the riddler, no, fuck that, shit don't make any sense. I'm just saying IF the choice just so happens to be a celebrity, so be it, but they better do it fucking proper or there will be hell to pay, mostly in ticket sales cause word travels like crack around here. Besides the point, whos the unknowns that nolan put in the larger parts? Gylenhall as Dawes and... who else? Ledger was known up until brokeback as that 'hot' guy from ten things i hate about you and A knights tale. Cillian? Umm, did anyone remember the shitstorm of praise that 28 days later got? (I much prefer Weeks to Days myself) Unless celebrity is defined as a person who draws mainstream consumers, (Those people that read them bullshit magazines and watch ET all the time) then, whatever, I imagine Nolan would only go that route if he seriously thought they can pull it off and like i said earlier, let the man behind the camera do his thing, he's 2/2 in the batman world in my eyes.

first off, it's stickmangrit, all one word. but since reading comprehension clearly isn't a strong point of yours, i'll concede that one.

now as for your ideas, let's go point by point, shall we? point me to one fucking arc of the mythos in which Penguin is a legitimate corporate mogul. ONE. i'll spoil it for you, it ain't there. he's a career criminal, through and through. he definitely styles himself as a legitimate business man, but always while engaging in the black market. as it stands in the current cannon now he's an underground arms dealer/information broker. if you're going to go for the mix of corporate/black market bad guy, there's no need to fuck with the Penguin when you've already got Black Mask on hand to perfectly fill that slot and fit perfectly in Nolan's world.

second, how the fuck do you figure that a guy who's got the resources to map a whole fucking city with cell phones, a guy who obsessive-compulsively plans for EVERY fucking eventuality, doesn't have the security in place IN HIS OWN FUCKING BUILDING to spot machine guns of ANY stripe. for that matter, explain to me the mechanics of how you fit an ammo clip of remotely usable size in a fucking umbrella. furthermore, how in hell are they going to waste a boardroom full of people without half the fucking building making immediate calls to 911, let alone the instant response of security, let alone what Wayne would do to these guys in that scenario.

third, Poison Ivy and Mr Freeze? seriously, short of Clayface and Man-Bat, could you go a more unrealistic route with the villains?

point being, if you want to write a fanfic, by all means go for it. but if you want to present it as the "dream ticket" sequel to TDK, then you need at least follow the fucking ground rules on tone and characterization laid down by Nolan in the first two films. you want to post your shit on AICN without doing so, expect to be called out on it with no consideration given to offending your delicate sensibilities.

and as for your comments about "having the balls to come up with your own ideas," i'm not a scriptwriter. i have great reading comprehension, and i'm fairly good with character analysis. when BB came out, and every tool on IMDB started spouting their theories on how Joker "ought to be done," and flooded the message boards with how bleached skin and constant jokes were essential to the character, i laid out my concept. i thought that Joker, in keeping with the overarching mythos, should be the anti-Batman. Batman is fascism, an authoritarian being who is absolutely necessary in an environment like Gotham which, to quote Denny O'Neil's novelization of Knightfall, "hasn't had an honest government since the Civil War." he is defined by his past, specifically the murder of his parents. he is dark, brooding, and tortured by his attempts to control the corruption and evil that surrounds him.

by contrast, Joker is the embodiment of anarchy. he has no past, for all intents and purposes he's a force of fucking nature spat fully formed from the bowels of Gotham to act as a counterbalance to Batman. he's every bit as intelligent, resourceful, and meticulous in his planning as Batman, but where Batman acts to combat the chaos around him, Joker revels in it. he is bright, colorful, and utterly unhinged. he'll kill for nothing more than a punch-line. he is seeking to show the rest of the world the fallacy that is civilization, and show them the way to the freedom of madness. bleached skin and wide-brimmed purple hats are superfluous to the nature of the character. and point for fucking point I CALLED IT. Nolan presented every single thing i could ever want to see in the Joker. he and Ledger distilled the character down to everything i've ever loved about him, and reminded me why Joker's the best damn villain of ANY story medium.

does this mean i could have done just as well with a script, given the chance? FUCK NO. i have no grasp of dramatic pacing, and i suck with dialogue. that's why i don't write scripts. i also don't play professional football, because i'm a 165 pound smoker with minimal physical coordination. i have enough problems with Rock Band guitar on hard, let alone movin a ball upfield with 200 pound gorillas ready to knock my fucking brains out. recognize your strengths and weaknesses, and act accordingly.

Even though the whole idea of Riddler is going to be tough since the Joker had a lot of the same characteristics of the Riddler. My brain doesn't function on the same wavelength as Nolan and co., so I would not be able to fathom any creative decisions for the next movie. Nevertheless, a fanboy must speak and their best bet would be to continue their intertwining storylines with their multiple villains and arcs with the Joker again(Depp is obvious but still awesome and Joseph Gordon Levitt does bear a resemblance to Ledger), and if they were to do a Penguin or Riddler, Hoffman and Casey Affleck would be godly choices. They gotta give Arkham Asylum a bigger role. That place has the potential of exploring so many themes and sides of batman.
Some ideas
by Gremlin517
Aug 25th, 2008

First thing I'm going to say is going to have some geek boys pull their hair out, but I would love to see Robin as done by Christopher Nolan. That is that I would like to see the Robin character done right, realistically, with a bad-ass kid actor--imagine that kid from the Terminator movies doing Robin--something like that. Realistic, gritty and in some ways a throwback to another age. Secondly, drop the idea of the Penguin--the Penguin was stupid even back when it was originally created and unless you can find a character who convincingly fits into a birdcage and speaks in a convincing British accent--it just shouldn't be done. Third, yeah Catwoman is okay, but do her justice, which so far with Goyer and Nolan I'm not worried about. Finally, on to the void left by Heath Ledger--who did an awesome job, but who is not, actually irreplaceable. I say go with the same type of CGI that was used on Two-Face--give us a joker that looks like what would happen if Heath Ledger's Joker had finally gone off the deep end and made himself look like the cards that he has been carrying the whole time--but as he would look if he had attempted to fuck up his face using the tools that are at his diposal--knives, machetes, cotton--that is a common mad-man who wants to become more thoroughly the character that he had already started to become. Move the Joker even further into the darkest recesses of his soul and show it to us on his face. Perhaps have him be so influenced by what he saw Harvey Dent go through that he has hired every plastic surgeon in his effort to finally become the long-chinned open mouthed Joker that we have always seen in the comics. Basically what I am saying is don't just give up the character because one very fine actor has unfortunately passed away, but rather move the character forward, convincingly and give us the continuation of his story. Make his words about he and the Batman doing this for a very long time come through...despite the reality of Mr. Ledger's passing.

Will have Batman hiding from the cops and the world. Crime will rise again, and we get introduced to the Catwoman, who will be a master thief rather than the smash-and-grab kind that is now rife in Gotham. She may or may not be working for the Riddler, who might in fact, never be seen, but just leave his clues around for anyone who wants to find them. They'll cross Bruce Wayne one too many times and he will come out of retirement. I don't care who's cast, as long as it doesn't suck, I'll be happy.

two words: Black Mask. really, it's all Nolan's got left in the bag other than Penguin, and the power void left after Joker killed off half the fucking mob leaders and burned up the majority of their cash perfectly opens things up to a certain psychotic corporate tycoon with a fetish for facial torture.

and Two-Face is fucking dead folks, get past that now. how the fuck are they going to convincingly keep the lid on Dent's crimes and maintain his credibility if he's in a cell in Arkham confessing to everything he did? he's gone, there's no other way to make that plot work. i agree that it sucks to an extent that the number two villain(no pun intended) next to Joker only gets one movie, but for those of you bitching about Two-Face not getting enough screen time, i'd remind you that Dent was on that screen, pre and post-scarring combined, damn near as much as Bats was.

1:whilst i agree that Robin could be great in the Nolan world, and that they're in a perfect position story-wise to introduce him a-la-Dark Victory, using Eddie Furlong as an example is setting the bar awfully low, don't you think?

2: Penguin can be done perfectly fine if they stick to what he is in the comics right now. he's a ruthless arms dealer who styles himself as an aristocratic businessman. stick to that archetype and he's a great secondary villain.

3: since he can't use Gordon as an ally anymore, introducing Catwoman as an ally with some moral foibles would be a great way to approach it.

4: as for Joker, i'm sorry but NO NO NO NO NO on everything you've wrote. yes, they can recast him. they just need someone with minimal facial resemblance. the only point in TDK that i recognized Ledger as Ledger was when Gordon was with him in the interrogation room and you couldn't see the hair, and that was only because i had just seen the EW tribute cover picture of him with a shaved head earlier that day. there is no need to go to the lengths you're talking about.

08:45:59 PM
A good villain or villainess should be someone that you love to hate, not want to fuck. A good villain should be someone who is at least a little threatening and scary, not just someone with nice tits. Ledger worked well as Joker because we were watching an actor immerse himself in a role. We need the same for any other villain - it should be someone who can give a kick-ass performance and not someone whose name-recognition overshadows the character. Fuck, I'd vote for Laura Linney before I'd vote for Jolie. Linney is a great actress and won't be a distraction because of her va-va-voom like Jolie would.
Also, the "threat" in #3 should be Gotham's citizens.
by flickchick85
Aug 25th, 2008
08:46:20 PM
You can't/shouldn't duplicate the menace of the Joker with another villain. You should just make the situation more dire for Batman himself than ever before. Make him public enemy #1, him against the world. Hunted by a city of millions. Whoever the main villain is should just be leading the charge (yep, I think the main villain should be on "the side of the people"...at least, until they get out of control). Selina Kyle should be unrelated - a distraction and temptation for Batman to say, "Fuck you, Gotham" and embrace her reckless ways. Of course, he wouldn't, but she'd make a persuasive argument. Gotham would need him in the end to save them from the monster they created, and he'd be redeemed in their eyes (and they'd be redeemed in ours). So the theme would be redemption. So Selina would have to be redeemed in Bruce's eyes before the end.

congrats zooch, you're not AS bad as boogalooshrimp, but that's about all i can give you. Penguin's not sympathetic, he's not tragic, he's a ruthless fuck, but very well dressed and meticulous in his vanity. and he's not going to be able to carry a full film by himself. both he and Riddler make great side-villains, and should be used as such.

and as for all this Riddler serial killer shit, what the fuck have you all been smoking? he's a thief with an obsessive-compulsive tendency to leave cryptic and taunting clues to ridiculously intricate heists. he's a behind-the-scenes type.

goddamnit, now i'm gonna open my mouth and throw out my "plan." i say pull out all the fucking stops for 3. Black Mask, Riddler, and Penguin, with Joker re-entering the mix about halfway in. Catwoman as the necessary ally since Batman's lost Gordon. TDK already proved that a 2hr45min runtime will not harm a great film, so shoot for the fucking 3&1/2 hour mark if you have to. at this point Gotham has to descend into total chaos, the stakes have to be high enough that Gotham's willing to accept Batman as a necessary evil to combat everything that's going on around him. Nolan's set up a perfect 2/3 of a trilogy:

Part 1: introduce the main characters and form a cohesive stand-alone story in case it flops and you don't get the funding to finish: Batman Begins
Part 2: put these characters that you've built emotional investment for in part 1 through the ringer, only to leave them in the darkest, ugliest place you logically can: The Dark Knight.

Part 3: the hard part, convincingly get them back out of that spot. by the end of part three, Batman needs to operating with the same freedom as he was at the beginning of TDK. and the best way to do this is an all-out freakfest. we're already through all of the big villains, all we've got left is Black Mask and a shitload of third-tier bad guys. if it can work in the universe, throw it in there. most of these villains don't need to be big roles, so long as Nolan keeps throwing in solid actors for these minor parts(just like Micheal Jai White, Anthony C Hall, and Batmanuel in TDK) it'll do just fine. Nolan's already proved he can convincingly juggle multiple plotlines whilst keeping them all comprehensible and tying them together. now he just needs to step that up another notch.

problem with that is, there's got to be villains. half the mob leadership is dead, and most of the rest of them are in jail following Harvey's RICO stunt, with the majority of their cash either in cinders or stashed away by the Joker for a rainy day fund in case his first plan didn't work out. there's an incredible power vacuum to be filled, and that'll be where the next villain comes from. and i will bet you money it'll be Black Mask, Penguin, or both. Oldman hinted at Riddler(or was just throwing out the idea that since he hadn't been used yet he could act as a stand-in for what they had planned for the Joker to do), and he'd be a great supporting villain. i agree that the initial threat should come from the citizens and the police. and i will admit that the concept of Black Mask offering a reward for whoever takes down Batman would be a fun bit of plot. but this is Batman, he's got the best damn rogue's gallery of any superhero out there, to let that go to waste because the guy who played the Joker died would be an utter travesty, and Nolan's got enough sense not to make that misstep. he'll make his Prestige-style break film, earn WB another solid chunk of change, and get to finishing what he started.

it'll be a fucking miracle if we can get Nolan for a third film, it's incredibly unrealistic to expect him for a fourth. he's stated that he does not want to keep doing these forever, and if he's going to leave i'd prefer it if he gives whoever follows him up(and WB damn well better let him hand-pick a successor) a clean slate to work with, and not have to get around Nolan's plot points. Nolan put the character in his current position, and it's his responsibility to dig him back out.

Knightfall is a two to three movie arc, which would require a massive amount of groundwork to make it function. the Arkham breakout would indeed be awesome, but you'll need more than two main villains in there before it'll work. plus, we just had a story where a brilliant criminal slowly destroyed every bit of Bat's world, to do the exact same thing for the very next movie would be imbecilic. everything needs to follow the concept of Batman being hunted by the cops, the mob, and the very citizenry of Gotham. we can get to Bane after that, but right now there's a plot in play that needs to be resolved before that can happen.

evidently this didn't get across the first time i wrote it, so i'll repeat:

TWO-FACE IS DEAD. GORDON'S GOT A BATTALION OF COPS RUNNING PAST THE CORPSE WHO AREN'T IN ON THE "FRAME BATMAN" SCHEME. THE ONLY WAY THAT PLOT CAN WORK IS IF TWO-FACE IS DEAD.

sorry about the caps, but i wanted to make it easily read for everyone present. additionally, Dent's death serves TDK's plot perfectly. the Joker still won. Batman killed Dent, and did so unnecessarily. that's why there's the shot of the coin landing on the clean side. it would have come up clean, and the boy would have lived. Batman was forced to make a choice, to "break his one rule" as the Joker predicted, or to risk James' death by his inaction. by the end, Batman has no friends, has done unconscionable things, including taking a life, which is what the Joker wanted in the first place.

PHS would be PERFECT (IMO) as the penguin, but since I'm not fond of that character (save him for the comics please) after watching Batman Returns recently, I do think he could play a fucked up Riddler. For Catwoman, go with Jolie and if not her, maybe an asian gal to make the character more of a ninja type.

Christian Bale has stated that as soon as he sees Robin pop-up in one of the Batman scripts that is when he is leaving the franchise, I don't think they can do it without him and I agree with Bale's sentiment. I also don't think that introducting Selina Kyle/Batwoman is the best idea either, I'd rather see them re-introduce Viki Vale who can play off of the dynamic of not knowing Bruce Wayne's crime fighting alter ego. A less flashy and well known character for sure but Nolan could craft something with depth that is not too over the top. As for a villian, I think there is still plenty to mined from the organized crime syndicates, but I think it would be gangbusters to get one the best actors of all-time to come in and play Edward Nygma, that being Daniel Day Lewis, who of course was very open with admiration of Heath Ledger. And what a better villian for Christopher Nolan's style. I can even imagine Guy Pearce pulling the role off as well.

considering Nolan's primary touchstones for these films has been the Year One/Long Halloween/Dark Victory trilogy, he's already read the perfect way to realize that character. she's a jewel thief who's good enough at covering her tracks that she's amassed enough cash to get into the socialite circles. easiest way to do this for a third flick is to have her stumble onto the Joker's money stash. remember kids: "I'm only burning MY HALF." Joker only tends to lie when it suits his purposes, and why would he lie to a guy he's about to have killed? it doesn't serve the plan or a joke. he's got the rest put away somewhere for after the(likely already planned) escape from Arkham. having Catwoman stumble across it and snag a couple million from the pot would pretty much have her set up for life. puts her in the proper circles, with a sizable(and untraceable) chunk of change. starts the dual Catwoman-Batman/Selina-Bruce relationship, with her begging him to just leave Gotham with her(straight from TLH&DV). have Catwoman help with the crimefighting after her sizable windfall and you've got a compelling love interest that the fanboys(myself included) won't bitch about.

I don't expect Nolan for a 4th (if he even decides to top a 3rd!) but the studios are gonna look for money from they're franchises as much as possible. Surely, Batman as the bad guy would work for 2 movies max. He is after the brooding hero. All I'm saying is that a happy ending isn't the best way to end a 3rd film.

and i can't believe this never occurred to me before now, but GUY PEARCE FOR BLACK MASK! the guy could have pulled off either Bats or Dent, and i've always wondered why Nolan hasn't pulled this guy out of the stable of folks he's worked with before. Black Mask's been floating around in rumor since BB, and there were initial talks of "the other" coming out of the initial TDK marching orders that Nolan gave WB, a character that had Bruce's resources and a similar background but went another route with it. everyone assumed that this meant Black Mask, but i'm guessing that that character morphed into Lau over rewrites. maybe Nolan's been saving a former fan speculate for Batman to play the anti-Batman. AND HOW FUCKING AWESOME IT WOULD BE.

and for all the "they've already said they'll never do Robin" crowd: consider Nolan's personality. consider that a main theme in all of his films is misdirection. what if all of this is a smokescreen? what if Bale's in on the joke? what if all of this Robin hate from the creative team is nothing but a trick to get the fanboys to the point of supporting the character, only to pull him out as being planned from the get-go for part three. remember, the key source for these films has been the Miller/Loeb origin trilogy, which provides the perfect method for introducing Robin realistically and maturely. not saying it's definite, but the story timing is perfect, and this is the guy who managed to put out a half dozen trailers and still give us next to nothing of the plot for TDK. he might have something up his sleeve on this one.

Oh I absolutely agree that they need villains. I was just suggesting that the villains should be people (or a person) empowered by the city to help capture/kill/solve the mystery of the Batman. But only at first, until their methods get out of hand, and they clearly have no regard for the safety of the citizens who then become collateral damage. Then Gotham would turn to Batman to save them from the monster(s) they created.

I honestly don't care who those villains are, either. As you said, Batman's got the best rogue's gallery around, and most of them could be fresh and exciting, whether new or previously used, under Nolan's interpretation.

But I do want to see Catwoman. Just not as a villain. I think she'd add just the dynamic they'll need to make the 3rd one feel fresh and not like a(n attempted) retread.

goddamed enter button. anyway:

if you're going to do Bane, then fucking go all the way. there's no reason to go that route just so Bats can lock him up and go back to normal, you need Bane to incapacitate him in a major way. get Lucius to work on a cure for damaged nerve tissue, and have a stand-in step up to take over the reigns, going nuts with power as he does it. Bane's really not enough on his own, his actions could easily be replicated by putting the Joker in his position. Bane's there to break Batman's back and set the stage for Azrael to take over. drop all of the St Dumas mumbo jumbo and you've got a solid two-movie story.

Not only is she hot as hell, but she's a STUNTWOMAN...so ya wouldn't need any awkward body double switches in the fighting scenes. Yes, Jolie is the right look, absolutely...but Batman could break her in half; the actress has to be formidable as well as hot. (If ya don't agree, there's always Rhona Mitra.) And as far as the Joker, IF he comes back: VIGGO MORTENSEN. For Riddler: why not Crispin Glover? Yeah, yeah, I KNOW a lotta people saw him as Joker; but the only other person I can think of who can do the psychotic thing in his sleep is DENNIS HOPPER, and he may be a tad too old for the Riddler character.

She's done the same role over and over, and it's not remotely exciting anymore (and I don't think it ever was). Face it, the second she'd be announced, we'd all know EXACTLY what to expect from Catwoman. Where's the fun in that? What made the hype around the Joker so huge (before Heath's death), besides being the Joker, was the fact that none of us had any fucking clue how Heath would play it. That was exciting. Let's get someone who hasn't played this type of role, so there's some surprise to look forward to. Nolan seems to like that element of surprise in most of his casting decisions.

Selina Kyle is Batman's equal and NOT a girl so no Rachel McAdams or Megan Fox. Angelina is the dream casting but its been there, done that...cast someone who resembles Angelina. Anyway, looking through HUSH, Jim Lee's Bruce Wayne is John Hamm from Mad Men.

I totally agree with the notion that Gotham should on fucking fire for half the movie. Nolan left plenty of room to raise the stakes. One of the greatest feats of TDK as far as I'm concerned was the scope and humanity of an entire fictional city and how it was seamlessly interwoven through the main arcs. The third would somehow have to top that. That was my reasoning behind straying off the beaten path and giving penguin more money and power. Instead of rival gangs this time around the city's scope could be divided by the rival companies. Wayne and Cobblebot by day, Batman and Penguin by night. Penguin's rise in corporate power could have easily been going on unnoticed during the previous two films. I like the idea of joker coming back during the final third of the film, and it's a pretty good guess that's what Nolan had planned too, I just don't see them recasting without the fear of bullshit backlash. We might hear him laughing while in the background at Arkum or something, but nothing more, unfortunate as that may be.

Kids have played prominent roles in both the Batman movies. In Batman Begins, we're subjected to that spineless young Bruce Wayne who constantly looked like he was ready to cry for his Mrs. Wayne, the kid on the fire escape, and the kid Batman saves from the drugged-up mob. In Dark Knight, there Commissioner Gordon's kid at the end, and Joker constantly referring his being abused as a kid. Some of these Robin nay-sayers act like children don't exist in Nolan's Bat-universe.

KNIGHTFALL
by thegrayghost
Aug 25th, 2008
11:30:44 PM
To avoid the usual horrible 3rd act curse, Nolan should treat it as a Part 2. Why do franchises have to come in threes anyways? If you have great stories to tell, why always make the 3rd one last? "The Caped Crusadar" sounds so friendly that it really does not fall inline with the type of world Nolan has created. Since we're seemingly pulling titles from the books, how about "Knightfall"? "It is always darkest before the dawn and the dawn is coming." Well, perhaps, it needs to get even darker before there is light. In DK, the Batman has just come to the realization that he will forever be Batman or Gotham's dark crusader. Rachael, his love since childhood, is now dead. He is now wanted by the law. The Narrows is still a hellhole. And he has inspired perhaps more chaos than good.

I say, DK was the Two-face's origin or Begins story and now Part 3 is perhaps Harvey's Dark Knight. Continue to develop his character and not have him simply be a 2D criminal ... honestly, I'm still a little iffy about his transition from good to evil ... still feels a little forced. Maybe it's in the edited ~25 minutes? Perhaps he becomes a crime lord and starts a gang war against Maroni and the other mob bosses ... not for greed or power, but for revenge. He does have a boat load of money now thanks to Bruce. Aaron Eckhart played that character so well, that I think it would be awesome to see more out of him and not simply put him in like a 5 minute Scarecrow cameo. Scarecrow is still one of my fav batvillains ... hopefully, they can use him again later on in a Halloween-type story, but I doubt it.

Introduce Selina Kyle as the character in the "Long Halloween/Dark Victory" with the mob/Falcone connections and a possible love interest since Dawes is dead. Cher ... hellz no, but then I trust Nolan. Angelina Jolie ... right age for Bale and hot as hell, but can I take her seriously as an actress? Maybe with a great script and direction, and if she keeps her ego in check. Bring in one of the greatest modern day character actors, Daniel Day Lewis, to do a small bit as the Joker in Arkham and introduce Dr. Harleen Quinzel ... The Joker can basically act as a Hannibal Lecter taunting Batman. Seymour Hoffman can just have a small part as another crime boss in Gotham. Introduce Jean-Paul Valley, Doctor Shondra Kinsolving, Alberto Falcone, Sofia Falcone Gigante, Montoya, and Bullock to flesh out this movie and give them a much bigger role in Part 4.

Bring in Bane, and not as an oversized dumb guerrilla like he has been portrayed in both The Animated Series and in the horrible Schumacher debacle, but as the calculating and devious villian that would be slowly breaking down Batman's mind, spirit, and body over the course of the movie, in the shadows, and waiting for the perfect moment when his prey was at his weakest and then snap his back ... I think that would be pretty dramatic ending to any Part 3. Bane is not the most interesting villain in the world, but it's what he was able to do Batman and consequences afterwards that were interesting (Azrael, Lady Shiva, Gotham w/o Batman, reclaiming the mantle, etc.). One of the things I've always appreciated with Nolan's movies is that they are all rich 3-dimensional worlds where you can have a ton of characters and not have it feel bloated ... not an easy trick to do.

Other suggestions. Get Bale to "fix" his Batman voice. He needs to try a different take on it cause it's not really working ... maybe make it deep w/o the growling. The funny thing is that it works when he is yelling ("SWEAR TO ME!") but when he is having a conversation, it's a bit comical ... his Bruce is pitch perfect though. Another thing is to hire a fight choreographer that knows how to put together badass/intense hand-to-hand combat sequences (Batman is supposed to be one the world's greatest martial artist ... think Jason Bourne, Casino Royale, Transporter, and maybe some of the Asian stuff ... though only if they can make it look right). I still feel like I haven't been shown Batman's full fighting prowess. Show more of the detective side of him by having him find clues, interrogating people, going undercover, tailing people, infiltrate/breaking into places where he has to use more stealth than brawn, doing survelliance, and not just behind the computer hacking stuff safely in the batcave. Batman is regarded as the world's greatest detective. "Rather than simply outfighting his opponents, Batman often uses cunning and planning to outwit them. In Grant Morrison's first storyline in JLA, Superman describes Batman as 'the most dangerous man on Earth,'" - Wiki I have still yet to see this side of the character in any Batman movie. TAS and JLAU did a good job of this though. Bring in another obsure Batvillian ... having Zsasz in Begins was pretty fun ... perhaps Killer Croc? Blackmask (hates Bruce)? Deadshot?

I loved the Dark Knight btw with its flaws. Ledger's Joker is most interesting incarnation of that character in any non comicbook medium ... yes, better than Hamill. I don't think Gary Oldman gets enough props for how perfect he is as Gordon ... I really cannot imagine anyone else matching what he has done with the character.

Lord help me, I know I'm gonna catch it for this one, here in the talkbacks. (I suppose it might be like revealing I'm Michael Bay. - ha!) It's not uncommon to see an older man portray an evil bastard, pulling all the strings. But how often do we see that with women? To me, this actually sounds both interesting and unique. (And nobody can say anything against the surprise that was Heath Ledger.) This is Nolan's series, now. I'm willing to sit back and watch the magic happen. (However, I will continue hoping that they improve the visual look of Batman's costume, while maintaining the practicality of the design. - I just had to put that in.)

Remember Ras Al Ghul? Ultimate Badass? Remember, "We can teach you how to engage 600 men" while training Bruce- here goes my theory- Dent is alive and sedated, in the bottom of Arkham, known only to a very few people. One of those people is the reimagined Riddler, who is in Gotham the head of Arkham. He has been steadily going insane running the place, and does not want to become evil- but he wants to see Dent escape. So he sets up a puzzle for Dent to figure out so he can escape. Meanwhile, the Penguin is introduced as a side character supplying arms to the mob- police are torn between hunting batman and fighting the mob, so the mob is coming back- the Joker taught them to not have any rules and they are now using heavy arms in their direct fighting with the cops- introduce some more side villians here, like black mask as some seriously badass mob dude- no origin or backstory told, and mad hatter as some other wack job. Federal government is bringing in troops to take control of the city- ala the woman commissioner in dark knight returns comic. Shit is going down big- cops are dying from mob warfare- and then Harvey figures out the clues and gets out of arkham. And no one knows who the fuck he is- everyone thought he was dead. He goes right to the penguin and beats the shit out of him, and takes some weapons. And then- he recruits pissed cops to his "gang," telling them that they are going to take back gotham from the mobsters. His big bad Harv persona comes out in full mating regalia- and they just start killing the mobsters. Assault style, no mercy- this brings batman back. National guard comes it to stop the rioting and crap, batman comes back- takes down Dent, and the military comes after Batman. This is where the 600 people being taken down shit comes in. New tech for this movie- active camouflage, ala predator. So now, he can literally appear to be invisible. Ras Al Ghul comes back- he wants to help batman because, I don't know- he wants to kick the shit out of people- that's his bag man- the only guy who ever came close to taking out batman. And the movie ends with Batman and Ras taking down and entire squad of soldiers who have chased them in to a lit warehouse. they burst in from all doors, and batman and ras are there. the soldiers cant fire because of cross-room shots hitting each other. Plus- batman goes all invisible and so does Ras- Batman loans him armor too. Like, all you can see is their faces or something. So they just take out like 600 soldiers. And then they leave. I heard it from a dude in an elevator with a 4th gen iphone and catwoman babysitting his kids.

Actually, I started the Cher as Catwoman rumor in a letter to Amazing Heroes in 1986. I'm surprised it's still going around - she's kinda too old for the role now.

I know at AICN people say all kinds of crazy stuff, which is why this is so funny - it really is true. I worked at a comic shop and I was talking to customers about Cher as Catwoman long before I ever saw the rumor pop up anywhere else in print.

Actually there's only one way it would work now, and that would be is they filmed an adaptation of the Dark Knight Returns. But only if they could get Nicholson as the Joker and Adam West as Batman.

With Bryce Dallas Howard as Carrie Kelley.

..I saw Dark Knight on Saturday and what an overrated borefest it was. Heath was unquestionably awesome as the Joker, and props to him because he was the only good thing about it. Harvey Dent started out good, but then the change to Two Face was illogical and the ending with him just seemed tacked on and drawn out to make up for missing Heath material. Maggie was a total washout, a less attractive and charisma-less leading lady you'll never find. The "action", if you can call it that, was some of the most poorly choreographed and lousily shot I've seen since Daredevil. That 'voice' Bale uses in costume is a ridiculous travesty and the whole damn thing needed AT LEAST an hour edited out of it. The unmitigated praise needs to end, this emperor had no clothes, Dark Knight kinda sucked, and I mean it, and I'm not just saying it to get folks riled. Be honest, other than the Joker it really kinda stunk.

Now, I wish dent was still alive, being treated in secret somewhere deep in Arkham. As for people saying batman has lost Gordon as an ally.... WTF, Gordon is about the only person in gotham who dosent thing Batman is a killer (well him and Fox). I love the Penguin ideas as an arms dealer filling the void as gothams top mob boss. However the Dark Knight was based around chaos and destruction, and I think the riddler as a zodiac inspired serial killer who sends these cryptic clues that Gordon passed allong to Batman (this time using his detective smarts to outwit the bad guy). As for catwoman, anyone thought of having a far eastern socialite, who sidelines as thief (for the kicks), possibly assasin for the HongKong mafia guy from DK??? played by Ziyi Zhang (girl from Crouching Tiger?)

What's the theme of the movie going to be? What would catwoman's motives be? What other villains will be in the background/foreground? Will the city be overrun with joker-wannabes? Would catwoman be a rising new villainess, a well-experienced foe at the height of her abilities, or a fading shadow of a past era? The trouble with forming an opinion on Cher is that we don't know what the story is.

... but an obsessed, manipulative, plotting, master of strategy Riddler, not the loser he's been portrayed as in the comics for far too long. Joker was an agent of chaos and made a nice contrast to Batman as a villain because of that. Now let's see how well Bats fares against someone as meticulous and calculating as himself. As for who should play him? Fuck, I don't know. But it should be someone who wouldn't be the obvious choice. That worked out well with Ledger.
Riddler is a Narcissist not a psychopath
by holidill
Aug 26th, 2008
07:32:35 AM
Forgive my spelling, but most people don't care if things are spelled right in talkbacks. Anyway, Riddler is a narcissist, be believes he is smarter than anyone so he commits crimes to prove it. He leaves clues that spells out what he is doing so if anyone smart enough can crack them it will give him a perfect foil. Get Riddler in there, introduce Catwoman because Batman needs some sex, and have the Penguin portrayed as he is in the comics as a "legitimate" bussinessman who happens to help the bad guys and good guys alike. He could be a small role, but to have him in there would add to the world of Batman.

by future stan
Aug 26th, 2008
07:54:37 AM
surely, a fantastic sequal and end to the Nolan and Bale era of the Batman would be an adaptation (not the original) of the Knightfall saga. setting the film six years or so after Dark Knight and do it as a aback to back two-parter released about 4 months from each other. this would allow for the return of the joker (Joseph Gordon Levit is my pick) but for only a portion of the film allowing the actor to act his nuts off for his limited screen time and do justice to mr ledger. beyond that it means that they can have Nightwing but without the need for a Robin as Bale has said he never wants one, but hint that the character was there in the dead time between films. as for Catwoman this would make a prime time to bring her in and maybe even emply the beginning of Batgirl (anyone notice neither her name nor her face was shown in Dark Knight except for maybe a couple of frames? something there?) and thus a geek pleasing girl fight. Beyond that the only film i'd like to see after this would be a second chance for Cloony as Batman in a 'Dark Knigh Returns' adaptation, you know you want it too.

I would make the third one not based on the actual Knightfall story, but on the same kind of plan that Bane used to break the Batman: A villain torments and distracts Batman (maybe the Riddler distracting him with killings/riddles while another real plan is being hatched) so badly that when the true plan is revealed, he is so worn-down and weak that he cannot win...

I still love that title, from way back when I was...funny enough...trying to make suggestions to Warner Bros., after Burton's BATMAN, in '89. I remember doing conceptual art of a "training suit" for Robin, wearing more bullet proof protection than Batman would ever wear. He had a helmet and the whole bit, yet still mobile enough to aid Batman. It was fun. And in my way, it was a way of making the existence of Robin MORE REAL. And it only makes me feel as though we've come full circle,...in that, it is exactly the approach that Nolan needs to take, if Robin (however doubtful) is ever a part of his vision for THE CAPED CRUSADER.

by grampageezer
Aug 26th, 2008
10:09:07 AM
Getting back to the subject of Batman's stable of great villians, why doesn't the studios take a page from the James Bond movie series, and open each Batman movie (or Spider-Man) with a brief 5 or 10 minute intro sequence with the hero chasing down some second-tier villian like Killer-Croc, Bane, or Man-Bat, or in the case of Spidey, the Rhino, Shocker, Scorpion or the Vulture etc`. Bats could fight or outwit the baddie and leave him for the cops. It wouldn't desturb the story arc, and be an exciting way to get the film rolling before the opening credits. And as long as these films take to produce, fans would get a chance to see their faves for at least a minute or two before the same ol' same ol' bad guys arrive.

...Go ahead and jump on the "quit while you're ahead" bandwagon. Either that or the "massive overhaul bandwagon." Chris Nolan has said that he tried to put everything he would ever want to see in a Batman flick into TDK. Does that mean that anything in part 3 would be something even the director wasn't into (like Spider-Man 3)? In my fantasy world, I choose a universe where Supermax is actually the sequel to Dark Knight: We follow the Joker to Arkham, where the focus shifts to Oliver Queen. Bam. Continuity, unified universe, all that stuff Jeff Robinov is trying to play catch-up on right now with Marvel (and will inevitably be seen as a rip-off of what Marvel is trying to do with their films). Dammit, DC came first. I say this with all love for Marvel, but they're supposed to be the rip-off factory. The other alternative would be to go all Dark Knight Returns and we can finally see the old grizzled Batman, 30 years down the line when he's gone truly fascist. And while Routh was the best part of Superman Returns, what organ do I have to donate to see a MAN play Superman, rather than some WB/CW reject? Can we give the Alex Ross/George Reeves fatherly, wise, benevolent God version of Superman another go, or are we stuck with actors who were neck-deep in clearasil until 18 months ago so the franchise can last as long as possible? How about doing what's right for the character? We've seen that these stories and characters are bigger than any single actor. They're modern myths. The can be retold a dozen different ways by different people and still hold up. If your ADULT Supes gets too old, bring someone new in. It'll hold up if the storytelling is there. And that's the good news. But it's abrupt disappearance is pretty crytpic. Evidently, somebody was chronicling "facts" about Harry on the Wiki Encyclopedia (e.g. his wife was a transsexual stripper). While no contributors were banned, it appears the entire thread was prematurely exiled to the trash bin. What happened?

First off, Nolan said that he'd never use The Penguin, and for people who seem so eager after seeing him in BATMAN RETURNS, he's nothing like that in the comics, that was Tim Burton's Penguin. And as for Robin, don't even bother talking about it. And why are people so eager to see The Riddler? It's as if you're just working off a list of ones you've seen in the previous other movies, whether they're good or not, i'd love to see Hush, it's one of the best stories they've done

Comparing anything in TDK to Daredevil pretty much invalidates anything else you have to say regarding the matter. It's really that simple. Also, Dent's transformation occurs throughout the film with the scarring and loss of Rachel merely the catharsis. I'd also like to know where you got the notion that there was missing Heath material? A smart little troll like you surely knows that they wrapped up photography months before Ledger passed. Regardless, whether your distain is genuine or merely a way to get some attention, you come off as a cunt for claiming that it's the rest of us who are wrong or in denial. An intelligent person can simply walk away from something they didn't enjoy and call it a day. Pathetic little children like you whine to the heavens because you feel marginalized by all the praise TDK is getting. Why not go find something else that gives you joy instead of trying to trash a film most people clearly loved? Is your life really that empty and devoid of substance? Oh, and the allusion to the emperor with no clothes: get the fuck out of here with that clichéd, pedantic shit.

You just know they didnt use all the scenes they shot with him. I remember seeing a picture of The Joker in the back of a car at night, with a goon driving, I think it was part of the viral marketing campaign. This wasnt in the movie. I think they will have a few scenes left over. Perhaps Nolan cut some scenes on purpose to use them in an unanounced sequel. He was cutting the movie when Ledger died no? Iam not trying to say they should only use The Joker in the next film. Just have him be a small part of it. My choice for the next villan....simple The Riddler. Just one villan this time though with a small part for the Joker as I said.
How about the Riddler as some sort of Jigsaw type.

When I watched The Dark Knight in the cinema I was expecting to see The Joker again at the end of the film. I didnt think the last time we would get to see him, he would be hanging upside down laughing at the cops. Now my last post got me thinking. I think Nolan did in fact shoot more scenes with Ledger, thats obvious. But what if he did actualy shoot more of The Joker which was intended to be used at the end of The Dark Knight? a scene in Arkham perhaps? Ah fuck it who knows eh? I think Iam just getting caught up in all this buzz for a third.

Superman
Lois Lane
and the Riddler.

If they played her like more of a psychotic Depeche Mode fan, or something out of a Marilyn Manson video. Very dark, very much in the Joker's footsteps. Some white skinned, black haired goth chick who loves to lick knives and cut herself, I could see that. But doing the cartoon version of Harley we already know, I just can't see that in Nolan's universe. I still say 3 should be the Clock King and Ridler. With Crispin Glover as the Tempus Fugate, and Jake Gyllenhall as Ridler.

I wanted to like CoM, but when the movie ended I was wondering what all the hype was over. The movie sets up interesting questions and then fails to answer any.

Why the heck are all the women infertile? Was the Tomorrow really the Human Project's ship or just a Government red herring? And what is up with the cow with all those mutated utters?!?

The kid could be in the Government's hands for all we know at the end of the movie! I know Alfonso hates exposition, but throw us a bone here. That's lazy cop-out storytelling... like the alien in Contact looking like her father.

Children of Men shouldn't be compared to The Dark Knight.

Keep this dark and grim. We don't need some puss running around jacking up hormones. Keep Two-Face in the mix and bring on a new villain. Even though Oldman is fantastic as Gordon, he's way under used here. I would like to see his character do the same as Harvey/Two-Face but be even nastier. Oldman could change into The Riddler. He even said he'd like to take a crack at it. Now you are talking an explosive character then. I'm undecided about them adding The Joker at all anymore. As of Cher as Cat Woman, stupid. I don't want to see that character. But I will say she does lick herself a lot.

I think No Man's Land would make a good template for a third movie - not a direct adaptation, but just take the idea of a natural disaster destroying rule of law in Gotham. Penguin could be a sort of benevolent crime lord a la Denzel Washington in American Gangster - one who claims to be "a man of the people," whereas Batman would become deeply unpopular. They tried something similar in Batman Returns, but it bogged down in the end. Ultimately, I think the Nolan version is not so much about the villains as it is about Batman's relationship with Gotham itself. The third movie should challenge that relationship.

Of course you aren't because I seem to have stepped all over your sacred cow, so sorry. I could have sworn there was a Dark Knight discussion going on here, isn't that the POINT of a discussion board? I'll see your obnoxious, vindictive ass right here a few months from now when the DVD comes out and the movie has cooled off considerably and people can gain some much-needed perspective on this heavily flawed movie. Even a classic choad like you can't seriously believe I have nothing better to do than bait asswipes like yourself just to get your ATTENTION? I care more for stepping on a slimey worm on the sidewalk after a rainstorm than one fucking wit about getting the attention from some purile dicksmacker like you. Is that they've said they don't want to re-do any previously done villains, but there's not a whole lot of options left if you stay "realistic." I mean, you could probably do the Mad Hatter, but I think he's a bit gimmicky. Then again, you probably could have said the same about Scarecrow. I think the key to keeping these movies good, realistic and true to the Batman stories is finding ways to reinvent a character just enough that he can fit in with the mafia. I think The Penguin could be it, but haven't the Nolans said they don't want to do Penguin? It's a tough call. I'd say Two-Face is alive in a third movie, because finding another villain to stand on his own the way the Joker did for the bulk of TDK is going to be downright improbable.

consider that every villain Nolan has used so far has been the personification of a thematic concept:

Ra's: Ends justify the means
Scarecrow: Fear
Joker: Chaos
Dent/Two-Face: Vengeance and rage

in BB, they gave us the escalation theme, which was carried through completely in TDK. at the end of TDK, we're left with redemption, "people deserve to have their faith reaffirmed."

Remember the Prestige, how the whole film kinda unfolded like a magic trick? Well the plot of the next Batman film could unfold like a riddle. I bet Nolan could do an AMAZING detective story with twist and turns that only he does best. Batman could be investigating the Riddler ala Zodiac. There's nothing wrong with changing The Riddler to a murderer instead of a thief. You have to up the stakes in the sequel. He could be like John Doe in Se7en; leaving clues, wanting to be caught, wanting to be eventually murdered by Batman, making Batman break his own rule.

I've got infinitely-better things to do than cast my line in the water just to pull in carp, I honestly was seriously disappointed with this movie but it seems universally adored and I don't think it means my taste is "shit" just because I didn't fall in love. Her doing another Batman, with another Director..(I know most you guys haven't had relationships before)...but that kind of shit Don't fly...He'd get all "Closer" on her..like "How does Chris Nolan do it, does he Do it better than me!?"..Yes I just quoted "Closer" in a TDK talk back..fuck it Quint referenced Children of Men..(which is a great fucking flick)

He's already done the creepy arms-dealer thing, remember? MI3? I've got an idea for an out-of-left-field casting choice for the Penguin (Whom I fucking hate, so the actor would have to really interest me): Malcolm McDowell.

WTF, sure I am going to get flamed, but seriously, he can be replaced, he did a good job but he is not irreplaceable, slap the make up on and there are plenty of actors who can play the part.....that said, lets see some other villain than the Joker, the Batman mythos has PLENTY, one go around with the Joker and the 2 -all be it brief- with the Scarecrow was enough...

honestly, the performances were enough for me. were there a handful of continuity discrepancies that bugged me from the first time i saw it? yes(if anyone can map out what the fuck was going on in that underpass i'd greatly appreciate it). the best description of the post-party i've heard was:

Joker knows there's no way in hell he's going to beat Batman without a human shield, and he just tossed his off the roof. he knows that that can only end one of two ways, A) she's dead, and Batman's pissed and is on his way up or B) she lived, and Batman's pissed and on his way up. the goons just got the shit kicked out of them, and they ain't goin anywhere any time soon. Joker bailed on all of them while everyone was distracted by Rachel's impromptu sky-diving.

but back to my view of the film, yes i noticed these things while i was watching the film. all six times(including two IMAX screenings) and they bugged me for all of two seconds until Joker, Dent or Gordon started talking again. i got to see the finest villain of any storytelling medium receive the perfect on-screen interpretation, and could not give a shit less about anything else. every time the Joker was onscreen, nothing else mattered. and it really didn't diminish at all upon multiple screenings. i walked out of the midnight screening knowing exactly what it felt like to be one of the first to see Empire Strikes Back, and there's really not a damn thing that will take that away from me. this was a perfect Batman/Joker movie, and the fact that a genius interpretation of Two-Face, coupled with it's current status as the #2 grossing movie of all time was just icing on the glorious, glorious Bat-cake.

have you read a single fucking Batman comic book in your god damned life, or are you just a troll?

that was not a "total redefinition" of the Joker, that was THE JOKER, just as Alan Moore, Denny O'Neil, and several other great comic writers have penned him. the only real difference was the scars, the makeup, and the fondness for knives over Smilex. other than that they NAILED the character just as he was in the comics. Nolan didn't "re-invent" the Joker, he just made his character work within the world he'd created for Batman.

what you're suggesting is an idiotic emo-Burton-Eli-Roth-esque exercise in cinematic abortion, not to mention wholesale rape of the source material. so please, take your shit photoshopping and shove it up your pimply fan-fic writing ass.

If you think Catwoman belongs in Nolanverse, just throw Robin in there too: It's all going to hell then anyway. And I spurted my morning beer all over my monitor when I read that guy's argument about Entrapment = Realism. Hilarious shit! He must have thought Batman and Robin was a documentary.

By the way, while I love TDK like no other, don't for a second think that Nolan can't fuck up a third movie. No director is money every time. Hell, I'm not even that hot on Batman Begins. A director is always on the leash of his source material...and CATWOMAN is a great example of the wrong sort of it.

Why must we get an entire new set of villains for a third film? My wet dream for 3 to have Ra's a Ghul return to dispatch the Joker with extreme prejudice. Ra's has always been my favorite villain in the Batman stable -- until Nolan's/Heath's Joker that is(I am in the "Get A New Actor For Joker" camp, btw). There is no more satisfying foil for Batman than Joker.

Finally, AMEN to the gentleman that referred to Eckhardt's Two-Face as genius. I empathize with the character more with each repeat viewing.

is that you DON'T cast people who 'instantly spring to mind' when you visualize the characters from the comic books. Hoffman is versatile enough to play the penguin, as a straight gangster boss with pots of cash and no quacking or magic umbrellas, but will you please stop with the 'I know a thin springy grinning comic who would look good in a spandex suit covered in question marks' There will be no green suit. No question marks. The Riddler should be a vicious serial killer who leaves evil clues, like the guy in Se7en.
And NO Catwoman

Catwoman is just a 60's sexpot. Urtha Kitt. She is a sop for sexually frustrated men. She is Batman's girlfriend. She is stupid and sexist and a vamp. If you're going to put in a woman, make it a good one, not some pouting nonentity in a leather suit.

and once again, this goes for half the talkback, but why the hate for Catwoman? the Robin hate i can understand, though i still believe that character can be pulled off, though it would be tricky as hell. but Catwoman is one of the most important characters in the whole mythos, and it's a perfect point in the story to introduce her. not only that, but she's another normal human in a costume, which we're running low on at this point in the franchise. what unnerves the shit out of me is this protest is coming mostly from the same fuckers who want the next one to be a Se7en/Zodiac rip-off with Riddler as a fucking serial killer, or are clamoring for fucking Lazarus pits whilst bitching that Catwoman's unrealistic.

seriously folks i don't get it, what the fuck is so terrible about Catwoman? so far all i've heard is "don't do characters we've already seen" after brilliant interpretations of Joker and Two-Face(and often from dipshits supporting Riddler), or out of hand rejections equating her to Robin and Mr Freeze. cna anyone provide me with a thought out reason WHY the character shouldn't be in this franchise? and no, Halle Berre doesn't count, if anything the cleansing of that turd from our collective subconscious is MORE reason to do the character right, not to mention we've got at least three years to go before the next flick(assuming Nolan still does it).

and on another note, there's only one role Daniel Day Lewis should ever play in Batman, and we won't need him unless Oldman ducks out of his contract.
Patton Oswalt? I like it.

But I also, on a completely different tack, think McDowell would be good, too. McDowell could also make an interesting Mad Hatter (no, I don't know how they could make him realistic).; Viggo is a brilliant choice for Riddler!

His Red Hood origin was introduced until the 50s. Jerry Robinson didn't attach an origin to him when he created him. Also, a later version suggests that he was disfigured by a batarang. So Nolan didn't exactly redefine the Joker, but he didn't follow the established character to the letter, either.

I got no problem with Catwoman in the next one, as long as they make her dangerous rather than camp. It'd sure be a different villain dynamic for Batman - I think The Riddler might come across as too similar to TDK, which might be tricky. And I really don't like the Penguin. But please, no Angelina - it's way, way too obvious.

not that anyone's still reading this, but i'll post it anyway. you're right, the Joker was never explicitly referred to in the comics as a "terrorist." this bugged me at first as well, but think about it. he regularly blows shit up, holds hostages, and creates mass panic and fear in the interest of furthering a goal. the shoe fits. he's not referred to as such within the comics because A) the character was created DECADES before the term even entered our collective lexicon, and B) within the comics, he's one of hundreds of other costumed maniacs running around doing the exact same shit. in a universe where superheroes are commonplace, he's a super-villain. in a world where Batman's the only costumed vigilante around, and the Joker's really the first of his kind to pop up publicly(remember, Ra's remains largely unknown to everyone but Bats, and Scarecrow's still readily identified as Dr. Crane at the end of BB) he's classified with a readily available and apt terminology: terrorist. it's really just another example of Nolan inserting this mythos into a real-world(ish) environment.
