This is really great news. I've been waiting to see this film for sometime now, and on frequent occasions MGM has given this film dubious release dates, but I think a Christmas release date is perfect for this type of film. Hopefully it won't suck now, cause it's an awesome story.

with a great supporting cast... even with cuckoo Cruise - love him or hate him you have to admit that the man can do smoldering intensity. Cruise looks somewhat like the real guy to too (PhotoShopped picture or not). As for Singer, I think he is a solid director; The Usual Suspects and X Men 2 are stand outs in my mind. Even Superman Returns was well handled. And before everyone gets on my butt about this, let me explain: Singer had a very difficult job because he had to satisfy at least two distinct groups. There are the cinema fans of Donner's 78 classic and then there are comic book fans who understand the modern material that has progressed and the mythology rewritten at least twice since 78. What we got is a compromise... a film that was good (77% on Rotten Tomatoes) but not great because it tried to serve two masters. My hope is that now that SR serves as the link to the original franchise, the Man of Steel will give Singer the chance to update the story and make it new and fresh and use the mountains of comic book material that has been created since the late 70's. That's if The Man of Steel ever gets off the ground. Anyway, looking forward to a good WW2 thriller... I hope Valkyrie surprises people.

Cool post. Undobtedly much of my dislike for Superman Returns stems from the fact that the original Superman was one of my formative cinema experiences and many elements of it, Chris Reeve, Hackman, Brando, Glenn Ford, the beautiful opening 40 minutes, Unsworth's photography, Williams music and the loving, epic treatment of the myth, have stayed with me over the years. SR is a well made film, in that it is competently designed and shot. The script, however, is appalling. The structure is all over the place, there's not one memorable line of dialogue. With a bad storyline and script there's nowhere for the film to go. The leads are bland (particularly Bosworth) and the relationships unbelievable. Spacey's Luthor is a pale imitation of Hackman's. Singer's action sequences are poor, he doesn't have the chops to pull off exciting action sequences. I could go on, but won't (the superkid). I agree that a Burton film would have been worse as his sensibilities seem to be diametrically opposed to what Superman is all about. In the end Superman Returns is a bad film and if I say its one of the worst films ever made it's probably a reflection of how much I was looking forward to the film and how badly I was let down.

Although given it's subject matter, the best they could hope for is to break even. But I hope Singer has realised his strengths and weaknesses. He's really quite an old fashioned director and I don't think he has the love for cgi that would be required to truly represent the scale of Superman's powers. Not just lifting and moving fast, but actually making enjoyable story points out of what can only be shown with computer graphics. Superman needs a director who loves visual effects laden stories and delights in the cgi rather than seeing it as another thing to worry about.

And fuck all of you that have forgotten that Singer is DIRECTLY responsible for the new wave of excellent comic book adaptations. Seriously, every director that has decided to take the characters seriously and every producer who allowed the source material to have some dignity were reading the X-men (2000) playbook. And before The Dark Knight, X2 was the greatest comic book movie of the last twenty years(although I won't argue if you say that it's Spider-Man 2). Without Singer's version of X-Men there would have been no Spider-Man, no Batman Begins or TDK, and no Iron Man. And yes, SR was a piece of shit, but a) 1 bad film after four stellar ones, including one of the best crime thrillers of the 90s, ain't bad and b) who fucking cares, Superman is boring anyway and no one will ever outdo the 78 version. And to those complaining of the gay subtext: get over yourselves. Persecution and victimization are INTEGRAL to the themes of X-Men. Yeah, it was excessive in SR, but compare Singer's level of gay to Shumacher's.

It wasn't X-Men in 2000 that laid the ground work for the new waive of Comic Book movies that took their subjects seriously. It was Blade in the late 90's. The success of that film is what laid the groundwork for X-Men to finally be made. Look it up.

I think Tom Cruise is gonna recieve a heep of good will for the Tropic Thunder performance, which is what the studio was hoping for before releasing VALKYRIE. Now the film can stand on it's own without the Tom Cruise ick factor, which has been following him through his last few film's. For me I can't wait to see this! Personal life aside the guy has made some great films & is good at what he does, & the trailer looks good. Good vibrations on this one messa thinks.

Saw Hellboy II this past weekend - no no i saw it on opening night but family members had not and because its a large family, they like to wait for movies to hit the $4.00 theater - you know, the one with the chairs whose vinyl is patched with black tape and the floor is generally as flat as an ice rink. anyway some fat assed farmer two rows ahead gets a cell phone call and proceeds to chat in a normal "im alone in a room" voice for 5 minutes. Someone two rows further up turns around and shines a huge lantern flashlight directly into his face. The fat farmer guy says, "gotta go some jackass is shining a flashlight in my face." and when he hung up, dude with the flashlight turned it back off and turned around. might have been my favorite moviegoing experience ever. So here's my advice: going to a movie? pack a little hi-power flashlight.

mid 80s or early 90s. It was an 'oversized' comic book almost as big as an unfolded newspaper. And while it had recurring stories, each issue seemed to have random stories in them. I remember one being about a time travelling assassin from the future where the world is dominated by Nazis and their flying robotic metal blimps. The story is told almost entirely via text boxes where the main character is telling us what is going on in a 3rd person monologue voice-over. It talks about having to go back in time to set things back to the right way - to stop someone from enabling Nazi Germany from winning WW2. In the final panes, the main character's sniper scope zooms in to Hitler making a public speech and you think, "aha she's gonna assassinate Hitler and stop Germany cold." but then the scope pans up and zeroes in on ANOTHER TIME TRAVELLING ASSASSIN who is there to shoot Hitler. And she shoots and kills him. In the epilogue, it says something to the effect of, "a living monster is less of a danger than a dead martyr." and then she blinks back out of the timeline. It was a very very well paced and well done comic story where, despite the predictability of the synopsis, as a reader you don't really see the M.Night twist coming - my point? I'd rather watch that movie instead.

When Emma Thompson started to be freaked out by the random appearance of scissors my friend and I started to think of all the absurd ways the filmmakers could include scissors in every scene. The game finally ended when I suggested they have Kenneth Brannagh drive up in a car with scissors with wheels and bluntly state to Thompson about the car: "practical: no, but stylish: yes."

that people are calling Superman Returns one of the worst movies ever made. It was no classic for sure... But YEESH! have you seen Superman III or IV?! You can honestly say with a straight face that SR is worse than the Pryorific part III or the Nuclear Mantastic part IV? The series may never top Donner's original or even the mixed bag that was Part II (Donner's stuff was great/Lester's not so much), but SR is not even the worst Superman movie, never mind the worst film ever made.
