in late '97 i was in conversation with a guy whilst we both waited outside londons selfridges store for our respective ladies. It was about two minutes of small talk until i woke up with the phrase"fuck your isaac hayes" i really should of been quicker as only the week before i had been eulogising about the hot buttered soul album and in particular his legendary version of by the time i get to phoenix. I became the geek fan instantly and mr hayes was gracious funny throughout. He hot me into an invite for his gig that night which i would of attended had i not hot dumped that very evening. Anyway for a few brief minutes this failed musician connected with this genius . My guess. Great guy.

People are well justified in pointing out his great body of musical work and all the other great projects the man did including his selfless devotion to literacy and great work in south park and other movies.

Has to be said though, Shaft is a bona fide timeless classic that will never grow old.

Witness the amazing use of it in an episode of The Wire with Herc and Carver to name just one example.

Some things will be cool till the end of time. Shaft is one of them.

The SOUTH PARK episode "Kenny Dies" sums it up best:
by SpyGuy
Aug 10th, 2008
06:20:47 PM
"Why would God let Kenny die, Chef? Why? Kenny's my friend. Why can't God take someone else's friend?"

"Stan, sometimes God take those closest to us, because it makes him feel better about Himself. He's a very vengeful God, Stan. He's all pissed off about something we did thousands of years ago. He just can't get over it. So he doesn't care who he takes -- children, puppies, it doesn't matter to him, so long as it makes us sad. Do you understand?"

"Then why does God give us anything to start with?"

"Well, look at it this way: if you want to make a baby cry, first you give it a lollipop, then you take it away. If you never give it a lollipop to begin with, then it would have nothing to cry about. That's like God, who gives us life and love and health just so that he can tear it all away and make us cry, so he can drink the sweet milk of our tears...You see, it's our tears, Stan, that give God his great power."

"I think I understand."

When I was roughly 3-4 years old, I was transfixed on a certain album cover with a Black man holding a rope in one hand and a fired gun on the other. On the bottom of that album was the word "Shaft" spelled out in purple and in this funky lettering. Inset on the top of the album was this dude with some shades and a bald head. That was my introduction to Isaac Hayes. For years, I thought that "Shaft" was the only thing the man ever sung. Then, around 1998 or so, a co-worker let me borrow his "Isaac Hayes Greatest Hits" CD which featured the singles versions of all his classics. Then I moved on to his "Hot Buttered Soul" album - one of the 5 GREATEST ALBUMS OF ALL TIME: 4 songs, 2 of them at least 10 minutes long, but dripping with passion, energy and raw, orchestral SOUL! With a feverish passion, I made my way over to "The Isaac Hayes Movement", "To Be Continued" (which, BTW Moriarty, "Ike's Rap" wasn't quite a "rap" as we know it today, but instead was a spoken word unrhymed monologue before most of his slow records), "Black Moses" and "Joy" (featuring the song "I Love You, That's All- a song with no lyrics but details Ike and his lady GETTING BUSY on New Year's Day. WILD!) I looooved Isaac Hayes. I will miss him terribly but he left us all this great music (and the film "Truck Turner) to remember him always! RIP!

by expert_40

What the fuck???

Trey and Matt should be sorry for outing Hayes to be the fucking hypocrite he was?

As they said, Hayes had no issue when the show saterized Christianity to the point of going over the edge with the Menstruating Virgin Mary Statue, but the moment they called his personal fucked-up religion for being the absolute ball of insanity it is, and telling the truth about it, how it was fucking made up by a bad science fiction writer as a way of making money for himself, then he has issues with that?

After all the Jew jokes, Mormon jokes, and retard jokes, and everything... Hayes leaves because he didn't like them pointing the finger at his religion.

The dude deserved it, Mori, and just because he fucking croaked doesn't mean he's any less of a hypocrite because he's dead.

Honesty. That's what it should be about. He was a good person, and he did good work. But he was also a fucking hypocrite, and that shouldn't be glossed over, or revised in his personal history.

what you were talking about when you said he deserved it, whatever the it was. Leaving the show? I thought that was his choice. Funny, because I was just talking to someone about what I'm going to say at my dad's funeral when he goes. Sure, he was a good provider, and kept us fed, and a roof over our heads, but other than that he had no connection with my brother or I. I do think the final episode is blisteringly angry on their part, and my comment was simply, "I'd imagine it would be very hard for either of them to watch that episode today." They may not have ended on the best of terms, but I'm sure both of them have many fond personal memories of Hayes from the time they worked together.

It is possible to strongly disagree with someone and still respect and even love them. I know that doesn't seem possible on the "FUCK YOU! SUCK A DICK!" internet, but it is.

its kind of good south park gave him a send off at all.. if he was still a part of the show it would be odd right now if chef all of a sudden wasnt a part of it anymore. (this has nothing to do with no realizing his talent, or trivializing his death, just a matter of fact about one of the forms of media that beings us to sites like this.)

the end of the "return of chef" episode definitely left the door open for issac hayes if he ever decided to return. matt and trey seem like the kind of people that would have welcomed him back. (although thats just my opinon, i dont know any of these people in real life)

... I'll forever love the greatness that Issac brought to South Park, but much like Matt and Trey, for him to leave the show the way he did was just pretty fucking reprehensible.

He said, and I quote, "There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins."

And this guy had the nuts to release this after all of the episodes dealing with crazy Mormon beliefs. The Moses spirit as a Giant Dradel. The tons and tons of Jew jokes.

Not once did he say Matt and Trey were bigoted when it came to religion when they were pointing the satire in some other direction.

All I'm saying Mori, is that the fact that Hayes died doesn't change the fact that he lived and cashed his checks as a hypocrite, which many Scientologists seem to be. Also, add those "free-speech" liberals to the list, too, the ones Harry is pissed off at.

Then again, we find out that the world is full of people like this.

Anyway... he lived a good life. He was a great artist. But in the end he compromised himself as a fucking hypocrite. It happens.

Unfortunately for us and him and Matt and Trey, he never came to make amends for his hypocrisy, so we are left with the most spectacular death scene ever created for a cartoon as his final epitath.

And I'm sorry, but I for one think it's fitting, because he let that Fruity Little Club fuck with his head and convince him that Xenu was out to get him and fill his body with thetans.

Whatever. The death of the great Skip Caray hit me much harder this past week. Heck, the death of Bernie Mac hits me harder.

before their body is cleared of Thetans, do those remaining Thetans go flying off and possess someone else? Just wondering, because if you spend all your life and hundreds of thousands of dollars getting them removed, it kind of seems like a ripoff if *boom* you suddenly have 6 more to deal with because Isaac Hayes died. Hopefully Scientologists will figure out a way of determining who the wayward Thetans came from and be able to sue their families for damages.

Should be sorry about doing the "The Return of Chef," and I really liked and respected Isaac H. (I'm not saying the guy here who wrote his obit said that.) I mean, Trey and Matt are famous because they make fun of absolutely everything. They said they'd stop making episodes if anything ever became sacred. It was to be expected that they'd get rid of Chef the worst way possible.... But it would be cool if just this once they made an exception to their rule and did a tribute show to Chef of some sort.

by Sithdan

wasn't truly the end of the Chef character. I didn't think Stone and Parker would seriously write out Chef that way. Ever since Hayes left the show, South Park hasn't been the same. Deep down I always figured Hayes would return to the show somehow, and the "feud" he had with Stone and Parker would blow over. But it looks like that's not going to happen.

The first time I saw Issac Hayes was in Escape From New York. The Soundtrack to Shaft was quality obviously(it is) but my Favourite Issac Hayes Tune is Ike's Mood http://tinyurl.com/3b8sho which I found because my Favourite Hip Hop tune growing up was the original version of Make The Music By Bizmarkie (the youtube 1 is the remix, good remix but still not the one I've got =>) which sampled it.In my opinion the sample gave the tune a timeless quaity and an atmosphere that has been unmatched by few tunes since http://tinyurl.com/64e4fr.Even when Issac Hayes turned up on South Park I was always reminded of the Summer of 86 so I'll always be thankful.R.I.P.

I'll really miss Isaac Hayes. I was a teen in the 80's and first came to know about him in his role as the Duke of New York in the great film Escape From New York, and later on as the voice of Chef in South Park. What has really blown me away though is that I have recently checked out his music, his music career etc., and have really gotten to like his stuff. And I'm a life long Heavy Metal fan (Iron Maiden, Dio, etc.)! I have a pretty broad taste even though my main interest is metal. I'm also a big Nick Drake fan. But back to the topic. Just as I've started to really appreciate the music of Isaac Hayes it saddens me that he passes away. At least there are a lot of recordings of him out there, he put out a lot of records, and a lot of great performances. He will always be with us in song and in film. Here's to you Isaac Hayes! A man with a great voice and a big heart.

In MY OPINION, I think it is a devastating shame and loss that black culture has, in many ways (though perhaps not entirely), given up and turned their backs on the rich music of soul performers like Hayes, for the likes of fuckin rap music. There is such treasure and such richness found in black soul and jazz! I hope one day that we will see a shift back to the likes of jazz , soul, R&B, etc., (or at least more diversity) in the music that black culture (or even culture in general) puts forth. There have been several deaths recently that have seemed to affect me one way or another, but no recent death has hurt me more fiercely than the passing of Hays. I miss you already man. Thanks for everything. YOU LIVE ON!!
I never liked "South Park." That episode made me hate it, period
by StarWarsRedux

That whole show felt like the ultimate example of their transgressive approach to humor. "South Park" is really little more than a bully-pulpit for those two guys, and I say that with pun absolutely intended. Their jokes very often don't really have anything to do with telling truth to power, or even necessarily telling the truth at all. Most of the time, they just express an opinion, while at the same time utterly ridiculing any oposition for expressing a dissenting view. In the end, most of their episodes just feel like laughing at somebody else's expense, and even if I don't like the person they're laughing at, it just doesn't feel right.

Seriously guys...leave the anti-Scientologist crap out of this one. Hayes was a mighty, towering figure in the entertainment world that's due a more respectful eulogy from what's considered a 'premier' entertainment site.

So for one God-damned moment leave that shit behind and save it for the inevitable Tropic Thunder (i.e. Tom Cruise) talkback. Issac Hayes will indeed be missed and if someone already said it, 65 is far too young.

And "ManBearPig" is not a coherent commentary on global warming. It's episodes like that which mock a figure and the larger social argument they represent without actually adressing said social argument in meaningful ways that I believe help to hinder true discussion, instead of helping it. The makers of "South Park" would rather just laugh at problems, rather than use their platform to advocate actual positions, and that wouldn't be so bad in and of itself, except for the fact that everybody and their mother continues to treat them as if they WERE contributing to the discussion. It's not social-commentary-- it's just social trash-talk.

A true talent and one of my all time favorite, I own every Isaac Hayes musical performance I could get my hands on. From his groundbreaking original compostions like the "Shaft" soundtrack (as well as the soundtrack to "Truck Turner", which was also quite good), to his classic reimaginings of "Walk On By", "By the Time I Get To Phoenix", "Never Can Say Goodbye", and "I Stand Accused", he was incomparable as far as I'm concerned. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform at the Apollo Theater in the 70s, and it was the best concert I have ever been to in my life. I hung around after the show to see if I could catch a glimpse of him leaving, and I was lucky enough to get his autograph and chat with him for a few moments. He was very gracious, humble, and funny, and I will never forget the experience of meeting him and seeing him perform. Oh, and one other thing - to AcardianDS, DeCypher44 and the other haters - you classless morons aren't fit to lick the boots of Isaac Hayes.
