Around the same time, another film based off the same story was made, called Eagle Shooting Hero. It's worth seeing too, but so silly and ridiculous. Night and day difference from Ashes of Time.

I liked Nightmare Detective, but felt it was a bit of a slog.

Count me in for Dorothy. I even liked that recent Emily Rose movie, and the other foreign film based on the same material, Requiem. Both seperate approaches to the story, both worth seeing I thought.

The movies like the ones above seem to be more hit and miss, as the casual filmgoer wants to see Hostel, not The Exorcist.

Studios will follow the money, which usually means milking a genre dry and then moving on.

The foreign directors are seeing this and can get by with smaller budgets and more original stories to focus on a smaller and more specific audience.

If not, it's definitely worth a viewing. It's a strange, disturbing flick involving a man who has a fight with his girlfriend/wife and they are on a road trip. They stop at a rest stop and she disappears. At the same time, we are made privy to her abductor and his actions from almost the beginning. He is a family man who, after saving a child from drowning/or being hit or something, realizes he also has the capacity to do not only very brave things, bot something very terrible.

The man who loses his wife starts getting letters from the abductor, and eventually he begins to follow the path his girl took, hoping he has the courage to arrive at the final destination.

I was lookinf for you this weekend, but my internet provider decided to cut off North Mississippi for almost the entire weekend.

The good news is I got some yard work done.

We had temps in the high eighties, as comapred to heat index of 110 last Saturday.

Jarv's movie weekend was very strange, but here are my thoughts anyway:

Sin City. I don;t know why I fet a need to watch this. But I honestly quite like it.

Die Hard 4 (Thank you Lovefilm. Not only do I own this, but does it sound remotely like "Streets of Fire")- Always loses me with surfing the fighter jet. And Timothy Olyphant just doesn't strike me as a badass. When he screams "You don't know me and have no idea what I'm capable of", my first thought is always something snide about his designer black shirt.

Princess Bride- epic

Bound- hmm, well.... I still think it's the best Wachowski film.

Child's Play 2- less said about that the better.

It was a strange mix.

Just as you can't have good without evil, good people sometimes do bad things just to realize how good they can be most of the time.

Jonah, Mirajeff lost if about two months ago. I forget the thread. He came back as a regular TB'er, and just ripped into Mori, who ripped right back. Then it got pathetic. Mira would not or could not stop blathering, and revealing himself to be a very, insecure child. It was humiliating, but funny as hell!

Robin Williams usually plays those types lately as in One Hour Photo.

Onibaba. More of a supernatural drama, but it involves two female killers during samurai era who seduce traveling warriors, and then kill them to survive during wartime. Eventually, one of the women in jealousy dons the demon mask of a samurai they killed, and finds the mask cannot be removed. It's a great film.

Get Carter fits into the Lost Jarv world of England where everybody is a well ard gangster lad who hit women and eat hulu hoops. Also everything seems a little gehttoish, whilst all the while eveyone is still polite and have a good sense of humor. Overall I really wasn't that surprised to see Cain beat people up, I thought I would be because he's always the nice elderly man now. But kind of like Freeman cussing or Denzel being a bad guy, it wasn't as shocking as critics make it out to be. Good movie, wish they used more of the bad ass sountrack they had.

The Orginal Get Carter is a masterpiece- and the score is magnificent. THe DIrector's other film of note is Flash Gordon, and it's hard to think of 2 more contrasting films.

Harry ignored his brown-nosing and theoretically (since he said you must be..if)called him a retard(rather harsh, but humorous) and then he threatened Jarv physically, which brought down wrath the likes of which I have rarely seen on here, and then someone posted a link to wired where he was sitting in a huddle like a little kid, in a pool of his own vomit, grasping an oxygen mask. And ontop of that, they finally took away his black box, leaving him a mess.

But, when did he lose the box exactly? And when did he spar with Mori. Thats what I want to read.

As for Meggido, I suggest any B-movie lover watch it since it has Michael York as the anti-christ, Udo Kier as the devil, R.Lee Ermy as the Pres of U.S. and Michael Biehn as the hero, who actually reloads his gun while saying "The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away". It's quite a bit of bad movie fun.

He covers all the major bases with it. All of that stuff is really in the movie, including Ermy saying "blessed" in place of a curse word.

I've had Diving Bell and the Butterfly on my queue for quite awhile, and havent gotten to it. However, I want to see Tell No One that's currently out, Negative Happy Chainsaw Edge which is from Japan, Dante 01 from France(I think) and as far as older films go, I'm looking forward to seeing Au Hazard Balthazar, Days of Glory and Aziris Nuna. Any idea where that last one is to see ?

I saw Circuit City is selling What Dreams May Come for 4.99. I think I'll add it to my collection. Sydow was great as the tracker in that film. When WDMC came out, I really dug it. I saw it maybe once in the ten years since it's release. Anyone else here a fan?

Flash Gordon is just a campy and crazy as it was the first time I watched it. And I can't think of many movies that are as quote-a-riffic.

It was subtitled The Bottled Fools. I saw it via Netflix.It had an almost Cube-like vibe, where people ride these giant elevators from city to city, and a psychic female cop gets on board with some viscious deranged criminals.

I also saw X-Files 2: I Want to Believe, and while I liked it, it's no surprise why it didn't hit. The tone is odd. I do understand now it's subtitle, and it's less wierd having seen the movie.

I saw Daisy, which is second only to Dark City as the best movie I saw this weekend. Loved that ending, or at least my interpretation of it.

Finally saw Zebraman which is also a pretty cool movie, and a definitely fun B-movie.

Oh Danny I do have film opinions but honestly most films lately have been so vanilla that I don't even bother commenting on them I don't really care enough to. Plus I haven't seen a new movie since early June so I don't comment on things I have not seen.

I've seen this sort of thing time and time again, one dude feeling his is perpetually wronged, and yet the problem was he was a loose cannon, and wasn't technically "working" for them. He has done nothing save post some reviews, a set visit or what not, and post in a black box. Several of the regular TBers here have done the same. I've been lurking round here since 97, and have contributed reviews, reports, other stuff under different names for awhile. Granted, I never had any sort of relationship with these people as Mira seems to have had, but his one so-called claim to fame was a disgraceful publicity coup that none of the site runners thought he should participate in. I think if Boll ever creates something that looks like a real movie, and is intended to be more than a way for him to extend his 15 minutes, I think they will review it.

This isn't a legit news site, or some sort of unbiased source. It's a geek site. MiraJeff would pick fights, ignore the staff, and then he wasnt even doing the "job" when they "took" it away from him.

Besides, I thought he was a bit of douche back before I knew he threatened Jarv(NOOOOT COOOOOL) and melted down. I didnt know any of that until today. And it was sad to read.

Anyone ever see 84 Charlie Mopic? Before Blair Witch or Cloverfield, this movie was THE granddaddy of documentary style shaky cam. I don't think it's on DVD which is bullshit. After Full Metal Jacket and Apocalypse Now, it's the best Vietnam War movie.

I really want to see that Red Baron movie. After seeing Paul Showgirls take on WW with The Black Book, I am looking forward for more european big budget war movies.

James Dean: I figured I should get this to prepare for Pineapple Express. I know James Franco is a good actor and I wanted to see that, but without watching a damn Spider Man movie.

Sword of the Beast: I have never seen this one, but the title reminded me of Sword of Doom and the covers were similar, so I thought what the hell? Criterion has never let me down yet.

The 400 Blows: Another classic I have not seen, but have always wanted to.

Blue Velvet: My girlfriend hasn't seen it but I think it's a classic everybody deserves to watch.

Driving Miss Daisy. Mofress also hasn't seen this one, and i don't think you can call yourself a Morgan Freeman fan without having seen this.

A little advice..DO NOT watch a horror movie or anything that has a big creature.

We tripped one night and watched Jurassic Park.

Later that night I SAW the T-Rex coming through the trees and my friends said I was in the back seat of the jeep hollering for everyone to get in quick.

Creeped me out.

Also don't watch Dumbo either, as you will lose your mind during the pink elepahnt scene and cry your eyes out when he visits his mother in the little jail.

If you don't get a swell in your throat during that scene, well, let's just say check your heart and make sure it's not made of stone.

By the way I haven't done any drugs since the T-Rex encounter.

I still drink beer, wine and whiskey though. Also cigars and cigarettes on occasion.

The book version of The Exorcist was very good at making you decide in what you believed was true or not true.

As far as horror goes, I need to remind you, I'm just not a horror guy. I won't even watch the Japanese version of The Ring because it doesn't appeal to me. I watched R-Point and the Korean Red Eye and that stuff doesn't hold my interest. I'm not even a fan of the Hollywood stuff. I watched the first Nightmare and Halloween and Friday and that's it. I can't tell you anything else about Jason or Michael and Freddy.

Saw and Hostel sealed the deal for me. If I want to see gore, it best be because a mace or ax or 9MM slug is taking someone's head off.

But what I will do with the next package is send out different genres. For you married guys I can get out some dramas and romantic comedies. For you single guys......I'll figure something out.

I want Rambo-level gore though.

I don't know why I like that so much.

That said, I enjoyed the first Punisher and wished they would have saved "The Russian" until the end.

I enjoyed it as a summer special effects movie for a single viewing. It had a ton of problems, and sadly they were the types of things that prevented it from taking it's good parts, it's solid ideas and it's cool sequences and getting them in line and making them form a solid movie. It's more of a missed opportunity than a disappointment, but yea, I'd come down just slightly on the positive side, making this an O.K. movie.

As far as Asian supernatural stuff goes, I've seen more than I own but I should be able to hook you up.

I refused to see Pirates, Oceans 13, Rush Hour 3, or Evan Almighty.....they all looked like bullshit.

Fantastic Four 2 -- I liked it. A lot better than the first film. I really liked the work on The Surfer. If I was 10, this movie would fucking rock.

Transformers -- Yup...I saw it. First time with my brother back to back with Die Hard 4. Its funny because I thought Transformers would be the slightly better of the two. PG-13 Die Hard....what the fuck? No smoking? Fuck you. Turns out I almost fell asleep in Transformers and then I had a damn fun time with Die Hard at 11:00 at night! I couldn't really tell if I liked Transformers though....there was so much shit on the screen, I couldn't really judge it until I watched it with a friend on DVD and realized, Holy shit!! This movie is trash!!

Harry Potter -- Awesome awesome awesome. These movies rock. Always have a damn fun time with them. My only complaint was it was released in the summer....what the fuck? Potter should be fall/winter films.

Bug 3/5 I enjoyed it and found it a creepy little movie.

POTC 3- 3.5/5 This is where I differ from most of you guys. I actually really enjoyed this movie. Loved the scene with the crabs and the ship, loved Barbossa back, the giant battle at the end. Yes, there were some serious bits that were off-the Pirate Elders scene, the entire character played by Chow Yun Fat. 1408- 3.5 This was a good creepy, brief but effective horror movie. It does what it needs to do, and it does it really well. Cusack was great in it.

28 Weeks Later- 3/5 A fun but not spectacular horror flick. I enjoyed it, but was in no way comparable to the great original.

Die Hard 4- 3/5 I liked it. It was fun. A good time.

Transformers- 3/5 Dopey, but it had giant robots and for some reason it's silly sci-fi tone worked for me.

Harry Potter 5- 4/5 Yea, it was awesome.

Sunshine-4/5 We have been over this, but fix the last third and this might have been a 5.

Simpsons Movie-3/5 Loved watching it, but barely remembered it after the fact. Which is not typical for the Simpsons, where Im qouting lines for months after.

Speed Racer-4/5 I told everyone all year long how this would be the giant bomb of 2008. And I was right about that part. But I was SO wrong about it's quality. I personally feel that the Wachowski's have created something as good as The Matrix here. The problem with gauging this is that SR is a fresh, mind-bending action flick for kids, and Matrix was for teens and adults. But to be honest, it's every bit as fun, creative and sometimes overly excessive as that other movie of theirs. Yea, call me out. Go ahead.

Prince Caspian-4/5 Again, didnt expect this. I only liked the first one. This one was a great fantasy movie, and expanded the world, utilized it's child actors in ways that didnt make me want to slap them, and actually gave some of the Potter films a run for their money in the darkness and poignancy department.

Indy 4- 4/5 I loved it. I kept waiting to hate it. I was almost disappointed that it wasn't horrible, because except for some cgi monkeys, I didnt feel like there was much to criticize Lucas for.

The Fall-5/5 For me, an almost perfect movie. I just LOVE LOVE LOVE this. It's that special kind of movie that you long to own on dvd even as the lights are coming up after your first viewing. Where you walk by the ticketbox on your way out and briefly consider seeing it again, immediately.

Children of Huang Shi-2/5 Chow and Yeoh in a movie together again, but they don't share any scenes and they play second fiddle to some bland characters. It's watchable. Thats it.

There always seems to be a "Best of" cd or package with Itunes.

Can't really go wrong with James Newton Howard, John Williams (of course), Clint Mansell, Hans Zimmer and Lisa Gerrard (Gladiator), Howard Shore, Klaus Badelt, Michael Giacchino, Bill Conti.

Secondly my high school physics teacher was an extra on Meet Joe Black (all his scenes got cut, surprised cutting was made on that film) and while not really liking the film he said that those scenes where Friori is supossed to be cold that that was natural for her because she was unheathly skinny. That her and Brad Pitt were huge dicks and never talked with the extras, they just hung in their trailers, while Hopkins was out with the extras the whole time telling jokes and stories and drinking with them. Personally I would prefer to hang with Hopkins any way. He seems like a crazy old man, who you probably couldn't keep up with.

But really....who fucking cares what kinda movies he makes if he is nailing Hellen Mirren every night.

All of those others were ones I watch at least once a year, maybe not Harry Potter 5, Passage to India, and There Will Be Blood, but they are likely to pass into similar regualr rotation.

Come to find out Lucas and Speilberg were having trouble finding just the right hat, as the past person or company had stopped making them.

So this guy says that the hats for Indy IV were made just one over from the town I live in.

I thought that was weird and wondered how in the hell that came about.

As for Lars I agreed with Emily Mortimer character when she goes off on Lars for pretty much just being a dick. And the movie really didn't go anywhere.

Spirit's Within was interesting. I saw it the night before it came out, because we had friends who worked at the Regal, and let us in at like 1 a.m. to preview the print. So, it was me(who hadn't played any of the games except the first for NES and the second for SNES), my 3 college buds who all ADORED the games, and about ten other geeks who all wanted to see the movie succeed. And I was really tired. I loved the animation, and didn't mind the story and regard the movie as a decent film, but it's just a little too cold for my tastes. It feels like it holds you at a distance. Part of me thinks if it had been live action people, I would have hailed it as a masterpiece. As it is, it was that rare oddity in he summer of 2001: a movie that didn't suck.

I'm with Danny, I don't want to give in to this HD mess but that list has me drooling on the keyboard.

Best gauge: Did you like The Station Agent? If you enjoy that sort of film, Lars might work for you. It worked for me in a big way. It was def one of my top ten last year.

Also, the score for Plunkett & Maclean was interesting but I can't remember who did it. Film, mmmm, not so good.

Catwoman is underrated and doesnt deserve all the hate it got. Yeah it was pretty damn bad, but the actors did a decent job given the script they had to work with, plus Halle in that suit was hot! And Sharon Stone as the evil indestructible makeup mogul, what a villain concept! If you look at it as just some dumb movie and forget its called Catwoman its entertaining enough, kinda like the american Godzilla was a cool giant lizard movie.

Elektra on the other hand was boring as hell, too bad because they had some cool villains like the tattooed guy and Natassia Malthe as Typhoid Mary.. mmmm hot. I loathed Daredevil, but I should see the Director's cut. Tank Girl was good stupid fun, Malcolm McDowell is always a good thing about any movie, and I kinda like Lori Petty (probably too much for my own good, is she still doing anything?). And every 3 from marvel is crap: Blade Trinity, X-Men 3, Spidey 3.... good thing they wont make Fantastic Four 3.

Also so much more of todays altheletes prowess is due to technology and not ability. Thats why I love Rugby, because the only thing you can really change is the jerseys, cleats, ball and field. I guess you can add some pads, but for the most part is all comes down to teamwork and physical ability. Like football the way the ball is made plays a much more important role, and new pads and helmets and gloves add so much more to the game. I stopped watching the Olympics 20 years ago after the Ben Johnson debacle. I don't know how many of you kids remember that, but he was the pride of Canada. I'm not joking when I say this but the whole country came to a standstill for the 10 seconds he raced. When he won the collective scream should have been heard around the world. And then the doping issue emerged, he was stripped of his medal and we realized what a douchenozzle Johnson turned out to be.

Four years later when the Harding/Kerrigan spectacle happened, it reinforced my belief that I had made the right decision by boycotting the Olympics indefinitely.

Biased judging- I know you get "home" judges, but this time they're taking the fucking piss. I was watching the Gymnastics the other day and any chinese gymnast could have come on, dropped his keks and pulled his pud in time to Nickleback and would still have scored 2 points more than anyone else.
