Any other attempt at reviving the franchise after the last couple of lame episodes would have been preposterous. But Shane Black putting back his spin to the characters he created before the franchise went downhill is on the same ballpark than Rambo IV. Could be a damn fine "back to the roots" sequel. Or it might suck, but watching Kiss Kiss Bang Bang kind of keep doubts away as far as I'm concerned. Shane Black is still the man.

I heard the decline of the "Lethal weapon" series described somewhere a few years back, thusly: "Lethal Weapon" was a really mean-spirited movie with a few comic elements thrown in. Each installment moved gradually toward comedy with fewer mean-spirited moments. (II was still pretty hard in my book, but by 4, it was just another action-comedy).

He went down the LE path with Rambo and Rocky. Took popular characters, put them in increasingy cartoonish situations, and lost the audience. But for the last two films, Rocky Balboa and Rambo, he took the characters back to their roots. Rocky especially hit a home run by stripping away most of the crap and focusing on the lead. I've said for years that I'd watch Riggs and Murtaugh on a fishing trip. They're fun characters to spend time with and have great chemistry. I don't need action that attempts to mimic the latest trends, or new, hip sidekicks taking away screentime from the guys we came to see.

If he's writing this then it should decent. Lethal 4 blew to be sure. But the characters are still great. All they need is a good script. I think Donner is probably not right for this unfortunately. His last few films just haven't been good enough. I would rather see someone like Verhoeven, The Hughes Brothers or Shane Black himself direct this.

that i refused to see LW4. I still think that the original was one of the best action movies of all time - I remember seeing it in the theater but it seems that most people first saw it on video. The original is great, as it is pretty gritty with touches of humor cause Glover/Gibson had great chemistry. LW2 was a pretty good sequel, as Pesci kept the movies from being too serious. LW3 started to get campy, and Glover/Gibson started to be clowns instead of cops, as the series should have ended there. LW4 was bad, as I remember hating the first time I saw it, and Chris Rock was totally out of place in that movie. LW5 will be another Indy IV, NOT NEEDED, the series already jumped the shark!

for the first time. i skipped over the theatrical release entirely and went Unrated. I thought the last act was up to par with the rest of the series but it really was noticeably tamer, even by my standards- which are pretty low. I don't usually care either way. But round about minute 70 when he puts that guy in a chair and pushes him over the stairs, and then pretends to shoot him over the radio- that was some bad assery right there.

LW5 could be the first decent re-imagining of a franchise since... a very long time ago. Get those main players in line and go for it! But tell Rock to go fuck himself and either give Pesci something to do (liked him as an arms dealer! that could work... barely) or fuck him off too. And off Russo - not that I disliked her character, but she had nothing to do in LW4 and she'd give Gibbo's Riggs the perfect reason to go nutso and do the Riggs we know and fear from LW1. And at the end of the movie, he takes his kid and walks off into retirement and a metaphorical sunset. Aw, come on. This COULD be great, y'know. Is it needed? No. Would I go see it? Yes. Riggs and Murtagh are great characters and play so well off of each other. LW4 was way better then I expected it to be. As far as the increasingly comic tone of the series, I have no problem with that. The first one was more serious because it was an introduction of the two characters, they didn't know each other and did not really want to work together, as they got to know each other and became friends, of course it's gonna lighten up. All 4 movies still had good action and good bad guys. LW4 wasn't needed, but it was unexpectedly good, so I will welcome a 5th installment.

Yes, I do enjoy my so-shit-it's-good movies every now and again, but I did actually like that movie! And CONSPIRACY THEORY was great - Patrick Stewart as a full-on Josef Mengele badass villain, Mel subverting his entire image and film oevre up to that point by effectively playing the victim / damsel-in-distress, being saved by Julia Roberts, and all the popular conspiracy wacko theories being woven in and given props in the script. That movie is one of my ultimate guilty pleasures, it really is, and Mel's performance in it is a revelation. He was really fucking god in it. Back to back CONSPIRACY THEORY with PAYBACK, then round off the night with the first LETHAL WEAPON... that's a great Gibbo night in, right there. Oh, and DGDB? Fuck that haters. I LOVED Lethal Weapon 1 & 2. Three didn't do it for me. I didn't believe that the bad guy was that bad. The Riggs I knew in 1 and 2 could easily take him down. And, yeah, the 3rd one was weaker, but it still felt like Lethal Weapon to me, it bookended the then-trilogy well and had some good action beats. The 4th was scuppered by a rushed script and production. Remember this was the film that had - or perhaps still has - the quickest turnaround from principle photography to release.)

Everyone said, "why do a Lethal Weapon 4" and then it was pretty damned good. It introduced the mainstream US audience to Jet Li. Pesci was annoying almost the whole film, and yet had a great redeeming moment at the end. The film kept true to the series without just basically replaying the same material. The Lethal Weapon movies are all fun popcorn flicks. If you're telling me the quality will be as good as 4, and maybe as good as the first two, then I'm down for another.

Adorable little chinese kids? The fucking imbeciles who thought it would be a good idea to morph a hard-boiled action thriller into Friends really screwed up. LW3 wasn't much better. The post-LW2 gauntlet was picked up by The Last Boy Scout with nut-crushing brilliance. An LW5 could actually work as a new re-invigorated action franchise, but they're really much better off re-inventing it with two younger (and of course much cheaper) male leads, a younger director and of course a hard R rated film. Just the combined salaries of Mel and Danny to do it, would probably be in the 30 – 45 mill range. Mel isn't far off from being a billionaire from his Icon films company and The Passion of the Christ film's profits, so doesn't need to really take film acting work anymore.

But as a "Lethal Weapon" movie, to me, it fell a little too short and the humor was too sitcomish for my tastes. The first two movies were the best. They were basically action dramas with a little bit of humor here and there.... Anyhow, I think with Shane Black writing, and Richard Donner at the helm, "Lethal Weapon 5" could be a great movie.

I love the arguments about political correctness/racial sensitivity in talkback about a movie series whose last entry's big running joke was the way an Asian character said "flied lice". Lethal Weapon, probably like Die Hard, is just too tied to the 80s to work in the 2000s. I don't know if it was the cold war political climate or what, but stupid action movies with badass heroes just worked better then. And if they made a Lethal Weapon 5 now, you just know it would have three or four heavily CGIed sequences where cars flipped through the air or helicopters crashed into buses or whatever, and they would be "exciting" I guess, but totally sterile and boring compared to the smaller action sequences in 80s movies that were all done with models or miniatures or stuntmen. Maybe that's what made the eighties movies better. Think about Die Hard 4: there were cars flipping around and everything, but was any of that a thousandth as intense or memorable as Bruce Willis pulling glass out of his foot?

And I thought Rene Russo was one of the weakest parts of the film. Her character is just shitty. I also hate Jan De Bont's cinematography. Fucking lens flares all over the place and everything looks too bright. Really ugly. What can I say, I'm not a Hong Kong movie guy. And even though he toned down his shit considerably, even then I knew it was fucking retarded that Riggs and Murtaugh lasted more than 5 seconds against him. LW4 also forgot what Riggs was all about. They forgot that he was a karate master, they have him a laser sight for his gun (he's supposed to be one of the 10 best shots in the world), the bad guys put his pregnant wife in the hospital and then taunted him about it. He should have snapped that guy's neck right in the middle of the ER and gone after everyone else. And Murtaugh was comic relief. So if they forgot what the characters are about then leave it alone.

Actually you have a point. Black is a very moralistic guy (and William Goldman did the same thing) in that he doesn't make his bad guys likeable by giving them quippy oneliners. One gets the impression that, were he not a sadistic douchebag, Hans Gruber would be a cool guy to have at parties. You couldn't say that about Pieter Vorstedt or Milo.

The soud avricanas in Lethal 2 were some of the most menacing villains ever. "you give a whole new meaning to the word dropcloth MR R", "i was just checking to see if i was standing on plastic" etc within shouting distance of a quip i think its fair to say. If Black is working on 5, then i'm up for more. 3+4 were shite and ruined his characters, if 5 can pull it back, so much the better.

No dodging bullets, taking pipes through the chest, or any of that fucking lame ass shit. Just two guys fighting until they were fucking exhausted and nearly done. Li completely ruined any potential part 4 had. I have no hopes for part 5...

... has the same problem as most franchises. The serious nature of the original gets lost in the humor of the sequels. Lethal Weapon was terrific. The rest are easily forgotten. Can they go "back to the roots" of a story that is old enough for Riggs' kids to be in college?

LAST BOY SCOUT 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO - with remixes by Huey Lewis! "Friday night's a great night to boogaloo..." ANYTHING by Shane Black would be awesome at this point. I even enjoyed THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT: I think Geena Davis was miscast (imagine a Charlize Theron or an Angelina Jolie type in that role!) but the movie was solid and the dialogue, as ever, was awesome. Shane Black can do no wrong with the Spud.

I've always been under the impression that Murtaugh DID take the money. As you said he seemed to be thinking about it just before the baddies locked them in. What would I do in that situation? Stuff the money in my pocket. Probably as a reflex. Get home after Riggs has gone to the hospital, put my hand in my pocket and-- oh shit. Look around. Fuck, who's it gonna hurt? And that's how Sgt. Murtaugh put his kids through college. The end. He also kept the krugerrand that one of the cops gave to Riggs. He put it in his desk. I bet he forgot it was in there.
