One-note, over the tops, trash-a thons. Funny as a 3 minute bit on the Ben Stiller show and unbearable for the 90+ minute run times. Stiller does not have the range to play such ridiculous characters. He is much more enjoyable as a more realistic neurotic characters see Meet the ____, Flirting with Disaster, and Tennebaum's (sort of). I am optimistic about TT though.

Pineapple looks funny, but I'm totally against drugs - no shit. I can't support a movie that looks "pro-pot". Yes, it's rated R, but how many young teens are going to see it (and on DVD) and want to go take a hit of some "pineapple express". Don't be hatin'!! It's only my opinion. Like I said, it still looks funny, but it has too much glorified drug use for my taste. So rock on Tropic Thunder!

What qualifies as a drug? Marijuana, Alcohol, Cocaine, Tobacco, Ritalin, Aspirin? It's about abuse not use, not trying to slam you but being Dogmatic about any of that type of stuff just strikes me as naive. Free you mind and your ass will follow.

I've seen too many good people ABUSE it and become losers because of it in my lifetime that I basically despise it (and alcohol abuse too). Anytime a movie semi-promotes it always gives me a bad taste. I have pre-teenage daughters that ultimately end up watching Knocked Up and Superbad at sleepovers and come back and tell me how hilarious it is, and all the while I'm thinking that their "innocence is gone" (and I want to kick the shit out of whoever let them watch it) They go to public schools so it probably was gone by then anyway. Pineapple is just another movie that I have to try top ban them from their eyes is all.

"Glorified drug use"...
by Kid Z
Aug 5th, 2008
11:37:36 AM
...well, I've never understood this country's hamhanded, schizophrenic views on drugs. There is a difference between occasional, enlighten use and ABUSE. Criminalizing people who just want to change their mindset for awhile is just another example of the puritanical, sadistic streak that runs a little too deep in our supposed culture. Criminalizing people who clearly have problems is just barbarism. I could also go into how the fact that some mind-altering substances are legal (alcohol and nicotine) while most others are illegal has a lot more to do with innate racism and corporate control than anything else. But I've probably gotten the red-staters too riled up already and this is a stupid-ass movie talkback, so I'll stop.

As a parent of a 16-year old daughter I appreciate your concern over drug and alcohol use on screen in recent popular comedies. You may recall ultimately that Superbad and Knocked Up actually ended with the message of responsibilty and understanding. And shielding her from depictions of drug use on screen, will not shield her from drug use in her real life. Fortunately my daughter has been exposed to drug (marijuana) use in school, and she views those who smoke as brain dead jokers.

Not really liked anything he's done since Zoolander and while his action hero schtick here is rather misfiring, the Simple Jack stuff is magnificent, I thought it was just going to be some offhand spoof movie mentioned once but there's plenty of it and it even becomes relevant to the plot. Downey is on an other level altogether, taking what looked all set to be a one note routine and turning it into something complex, unusual, thought provoking and incredibly funny. If they gave Oscars for comedy roles he'd be a shoo in.

Aug 5th, 2008
03:56:35 PM
Its interesting to me how few people (if any) in anticipation for this film have mentioned anything disagreeable about Downey's donning blackface for this film. Everyone seems to be okay with it. I recently got into old film serials and I found it disturbing how few people mentioned when reviewing one of their favorite serials Daredevils Of The Red Circle that the "Snowflake" character was one of the most horrific displays of blatant racism in this history of cinema. Are we going backwards or forwards that no one seems to have a problem with two recent major hollywood films featuring Jack Black (i.e. Tropic Thunder and Be Kind Rewind) that have a main character in blackface? I don't have a problem with un-PC humor. I just don't understand how everyone is so okay with it.

All they had to do was appoint ONE PARLIAMENT SEAT and the revolution wouldn't have happened. Or not as quickly. Instead they cracked down like communist China and made the revolution inevitable.

And Europe (and England) had slaves too. The point is you grow as a nation and fight wars amongst yourself and hopefully the right theory wins out.

NFL -- not afraid of an overhanded pass. And we wear helmets so our ears don't look like bulbous fleshy cauliflower. We are tough, but we care about getting the chicks, too.

But being in South Africa and seeing Rugby, I will give props to the sport. Fun to watch. But you can't really toss a rugby ball in the backyard with a friend. Something about an underhanded throw seems awkward. Maybe that's just me.

Had to miss Spaced and then Tropic Thunder....I'm sure this motherly devotion has rewards that are worth the huge disappointment of missing these two winners and that is my comfort. But geez louise, two of the most fun movie events of the summer. I cannot wait until I can see Tropic Thunder. I'm not a big Ben Stiller fan, but there have been a few times I've enjoyed his movies... Mystery Men and Heavyweights were fun and well suited to his comedic style. I know I'm gonna love Tropic Thunder.

I was thinking John but either will do. As would Jefferson. Slaves? Who gives a crap? Those were the times and we often make the mistake of interpreting the 18th century through 21st century armchair philosophy. Crap I say. And the Revolution my friend was about much more than money. I have several ancestors who fought for both the Massachusetts and Virginia militias who saw otherwise. Don't believe everything your uber-liberal college history 101 prof told you.

Mad? Hardly. Perhaps I should have been clearer. When I was referring to my ancestors who fought on the side of the Americans I was stating that they were fighting for independence from England. I seriously doubt they cared two shits about tariffs and money matters. It was liberty, chief. I don't care what you say. You are not going to convince me otherwise. I, too, have been schooled in history - not in England, however. Bottom line - I get a bit defensive when someone spouts that revisionist crap. It is an insult to the Founding Fathers, my ancestors, and me. So agree to disagree, then. I'm off to bed.

Youve forgotten that the other actors who are satirizing themselves in this movie also happend to be very funny..So, what actual action star could do the same and be funny?? I think stallone is awesome, in my opinion, he has many many strengths as an actor,writer,etc-minus comedies. As a Ben Stiller fan I highly doubt this movie couldve been as funny...We've all seen every dramatic-action genre actor youve mentioned in a comedy film .....what was that Vin Diesel one where he played a marine nanny?

which is a refreshing change, since there is no spoilers. All you tell us is that you dont like Stiller but that you think the movie is very funny. I'm getting more interested in seeing it actually, I'm just hoping all the funniest bits arent in the trailers.

As for the lack of controversy/outrage over the Downey Jr blackface role, its probably because its not just Downey in blackface, but Downey playing a white guy who goes overboard in becoming 'black' thus making a parody/satire of blackface. I'm guessing the usual 'racial complainers' are smart enough to recognise this, or maybe a Ben Stiller movie is just not worth their while to protest.

Why do American Football players wear pads while Rugby players do not? Simple. Superior athletes of greater size and speed play American Football. Seriously, how many people in Rugby weigh over 250 lbs and can run 4.5 second 40 yard dash? Who would you rather get hit by: A slow English guy who wouldn't make it on a division 1A college program or a 300+ lb NFL defensive lineman or 250 lb linebacker... or even a 220 lb safety for that matter.

I just love this statement - ..."obviously correct...". Man, I remember when I was in my 20's and just KNEW I knew everything. If you really think the Revolution started solely because of the Stamp Act then you really did receive an incomplete "education" back in merry olde England. You know, I think if you did just a little research you may find the Intolerable Acts, the Boston Massacre, and the march on Lexington & Concord just MIGHT have had a little bit to do with how the Cntinental Congress began to perceive England. Best of luck to you, chief.

I didn't realize the Brit education system was still smarting about the results of the Revolution. If you are an American I feel sorry for you as you are the type of twat who sits there smugly on the 4th and tries to ruin everyones day. Independence Day is the greatest day of the year, my friend. Have a beer, read the Declaration, and light a few fireworks. If you're a Brit then your opinion on why the war was fought is meaningless. Your ancestors lost, we won. Oh, and what a clever boy you are dredging up the old wiki retort. But, alas, my undergrad was in History - right here in the cradle of modern Democracy - Virginia. We know a thing or two about the events of that time. So, enough. I love my country. I love it in spite of the last 8 years of boobery. I love the fact that we fought against tyranny and won. I love that you can spout that slanderous drivel and not be persecuted. So retort. Post away. It means nothing in the broad scheme of things. As does this post.

That "we" being the collective American all-encompassing we. Should I not be proud my ancestors fought on the American side and not the Loyalist? "Slanderous drivel" being a response to "greedy, racist land owners". Yes, some were slave owners but again, those were the times. Dude, its a shame that being proud of ones country has come to the point that if one declares such patriotism he is immediately branded a low-forehead redneck. I would rather stick pins in my eyes than to watch a Bay film or listen to goddamn Kid Rock. And I rather like Moore. You've painted me all wrong, sir. ...about Tropic Thunder turn into a debate on NFL vs Rugby? It did, so I'll put in my two cents. I'm an American and a huge sports fan. You'll never catch me watching a soccer match, or a rugby match, or a cricket game. For that matter, hockey is not my cup of tea either. Having said that, there is one simple reason for this: I DIDN'T GROW UP ON THOSE SPORTS! This debate about which sports are better than another is pointless. Most Europeans can't stand baseball. This is because they don't understand it as Americans do,(as a pastime) or fail to see the nuances in this very skilled game. They didn't throw the ball around with their dad in the backyard, or have the childhood experience of walking into the ballpark for the first time, and reliving that feeling everytime you go. Regarding Cricket, well, I feel the same way, I imagine many in the UK feel about about baseball. It bores me to tears, but again...I didn't grow up on it. American football is absolutely fanatastic -- for those who "get it." I don't care for the game of soccer. It's the most popular sport in the world so I concede that I don't "get it." Hockey looks like a freakin' blast -- it's physical, and fast paced. I know that if I grew up playing or watching the game, it would be one of my favorite sports. As is stands, I've never watched an entire game. Now all this doesn't mean that as individuals we are stuck in the mud without the ability to fall in love with other cultures and their traditions, but to debate about which "sport is better," seems a bit silly. Major League Soccer is coming to my city next year. I have heard that a live, professional soccer match is actually quite thrilling. I'll be there opening day. I think we can all agree, however, that Curling is just plain retarded.
It's not Blackface
by thegrayghost

07:41:35 PM
Blackface is an stereotypical, physical exaggeration of blacks with the ragged cloths, shoe-polish skin, wigs, and large lips. Downey actually looks like a real black person. It's not blackface. We are not laughing AT him because he makes black people look funny or act dumb (because he does not), we are laughing because he looks like a real person and is playing a white person who is playing a black person. Big difference. If you don't buy that explanation, it's f-ing comedy, get over yourself.

Ben Stiller was intelligent in funny in the early 90's

07:35:40 AM
His sketch comedy show was great and helped Mr. Show take off and gave Janeane Garafalo (who also used to be funny) her break, as well as other HBO regulars of the 90's. It was smart, satirical and completly bombed. His film The Cable Guy is my favorite Jim Carrey movie. It was smart, and very dark. People were talking about it ruining Carrey's career.

So now we have the Ben Stiller of the late 90's/00's. Either a bumbling moron or an over-the-top spaz. Now he's a trillionaire. Give the people what they want.

With this film it seems that he's made enough money and wants to do what he wants to doand I hope it does well so we won't have to endure There's Something About a Night at the Focker's and Hutch.

..they're probably pathetic wannabe losers who come on here and spout a cheers! here and a Yank! there from their desk in Cleveland. First and foremost, the average Brit is nothing if not polite so these dickworms that come on here with jets aflame are local assholes who've been reading too much Preacher. There's a very simple reason Rugby players don't wear the same protective gear football players do: they don't hit, nor GET hit nearly as hard, obviously, even fully-protected NFL players have very abbreviated careers marked by constant pain and injury and then retire to years of therapy, surgeries and misery. Every time I see a Rugby match all the players are hunkered down in some interminable circle-jerk where NO ONE is getting hit, they just pppuuuuuuuuuuusssssssshhhhh real hard. Woopdeedoo. If England is so fucking great name the last 5 English movies to be released in American cinema's that grossed over 200 million dollars in their first 6 months of release that didn't have Harry Potter in their title. Hell, Dark Knight did that practically in it's first week. Don't even try it, politics sucks but America as a country kicks everyone's ass, and I know it's true because every swingin' dick and hairy pussy in the world wants to come here, if not to stay then they at least spend all their vacations here, you know they do so eat it American-style, with triple patties, 3 slices of American cheese and 4 strips of crispy peppere3d bacon, BITCHES.

No, not because they are more expensive, but because we spend the money necessary to bring the vision to the screen the way it should be, and sometimes it still sucks, but if you take every cool movie released this summer I don't remember seeing Guy Ritchie's name on any of them. Hell, even your all-mighty Beckham came crawling to L.A. eventually which, while we're on the subject, we'd all be VERY HAPPY for you to take back. Victoria actually manages to out-cheese L.A. and that's saying something. As far as 'friendly fire' goes that's politics and I believe I've already stated politics sucks. Surely even the most jaded Brit can't think for an instant that monkey-faced retard represents the will of the awesome American public. AIPAC runs Washington, I'm sure there's a House of Parlaiment version over there pulling your PM's strings right? Ask any American if they give a rat's ass about spending billions of tax dollars to support Zionism in the middle east, you'd probably have to spell it out for them but gotten down to basics they'd tell the Jews to F themselves, which is what needs to happen REAL QUICK before they blow up another ship of ours like the USS Cole, blame the Iranians and spark up WW3.

the clone wars review
by disfigurehead
Aug 11th, 2008
03:55:20 PM
I copied it...... A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away life was good and a movie named Star Wars rocked our god damned faces off. But those days are gone, in their place an endless stream of merchandising not meant for the average consumer, but the hyper specialized fan who still to this day must own everything and anything properly branded with the Star Wars logo. The inmates run the asylum now as Lucas long ago stopped listening to his soul as an artist - his heart as a storyteller – and has since begun listening to the slavering fanboys who cry themselves to sleep at night with their Darth Vader backpacks clutched close to their chests lest they separate it from their beating hearts. He’s long since stopped working with the geniuses of old, replacing them with young, idealistic artists who revere him as some sort of living Man-God and long to carry on his legacy rather than forging their own. He’s forgotten that the most important duty you have to your fanbase is not to give them what they want – but instead to give them what they REALLY want. Do the fanboys REALLY want a bunch of scenes of characters whose destinies we already know fly through a series of dogfights so their pretty ships can go PEWPEWPEW against lifeless moronic droids so incompetent you question the tenacity of anyone that would put them into service let alone fight a war with an army of them? Do the fanboys REALLY want to spend the next 20 years of their lives arguing that the movies they love don’t, in fact, suck the hair off of a nutless monkey? Do the fanboys REALLY want an animated television series not written for 30-year-old men, but easily amused 8 year olds on Saturday morning between bites of soggy Corn Puffs? Because that’s what they’re fucking getting with The Clone Wars. This. Is. Shit-ty. Everything that was wrong with the prequels is wrong again here. There’s not much reason to dredge out all those complaints again. The Prequels aren’t actually Star Wars movies. They’re Fanfic. Bad fanfic that tries to include every element you love about Star Wars without actually using those elements the way they were intended. And while some might argue that it can’t be fanfic if the original creator is involved, I would counter that the creator in question died a long time ago. In a galaxy far, far away. As an artist Lucas is entirely bankrupt, no longer able to conjure a single, tangible, original idea. And unlike other artists in his situation, he isn’t able to properly recycle the ones he had to begin with either. No, Star Wars is an ailing, dying beached whale of a property, too large to ignore but left too long in the sun to save. And the stench is unimaginable. So leave it to television writers to sit down and come up with a classic solution to lagging ratings. Their genius booster shot in the arm of suckdom? A plucky tween girl sidekick who keeps getting herself into trouble while being delightfully precocious and calling Anakin Darth fucking Vader himself Skyguy. Again. And again. And again. Every time this 14-year-old little monster opens her mouth to say something “witty” my jaw went slack and my eyes rolled into the back of my skull. She’s unbearable, absolutely excruciating to watch, and yet she finds herself in almost every scene of the film. She’s around so much I half expected her to pop up in scenes with the emperor or the Hutts, just stumbling into frame while saying something “cute” like “Oops, wrong door,” or “This isn’t the shuttle bay.” Seriously, the only way she could be any more annoying is if she added the word MEESA to the beginning of every sentence and BOMBAD to the end of it. You beginning to feel me? I get that they might be working towards a Luke Skywalker type transformation, but that doesn’t replace the fact that A) her very presence makes me want to punch the person nearest me in the face repeatedly and B) she will not, ever, play a part in the mythology of the original films or the fanfic prequel films at all, unless Lucas goes back in to tinker with them AGAIN. So odds are she will meet a bitter untimely end sometime later in the series, like randomly slamming into an asteroid like the Han Solo clone from Shadows of the Empire. If and when that happens, I MIGHT tune in. If I don’t just youtube the scene. Again. And again. And again. Then there’s the unending problem of putting characters in peril that we already know the fates of. Look, George. Having Anakin and Count Dooku have a dual ISN’T EXCITING. We already know what happens to Dooku. He died on screen YEARS AGO. We know he doesn’t die at the hands of Skywalker. Nor does Skywalker get so much as a scratch from him. We know this already. So why devote so much time to it, unless you’re completely out of ide Oh. The party’s over guys. The only one’s left here are the folks who haven’t realized it yet. I’m sure the Star wars fan forums are going to be aflutter with the revelations that Dooku once fought Anakin or that Anakin actually once went back to Tatooine, or that Jabba has an Uncle that - unlike other Hutt’s - sounds like a bad New Orleans piano player. But for the rest of us? This is just another episode in a long line of attempts to charge you for something you loved as a kid. I mean honestly, how much shit would we be giving Coppola if he had greenlit The Further Adventures of the Corleone’s? Because that’s what this is. Will I be watching the series? After an hour and a half of being bored to tears? Not on your life. That path leads only to fear and anger, and we all know that once you start down that path, there is no turning back. If you WANT this to be good rather than KNOWING it will be good, odds are you’re gonna be in the same boat as myself. This is no better than the Prequels. Scrub that hope out of your heart now. Until next time friends, smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em. Massawyrm

Same old bullshit, say something a Zionist doesn't like and hang the old anti-semitism label on,can't get any ideas or thoughts across then can you? That shit is tired and people like you two assholes are even more tired and your bullshit game is just about up. I don't see ANYONE leaping to the defense of Zionism on here, or didn't you two twats notice that? OH WAIT, you obviously DID notice that, that's why you trotted out the old standby's right? Pathetic. You don't defend Zionism, you just hang indefensable labels on people who differ from you and call it a day, it's classic. I wish I could meet you two asswipes face to face I'd show you a little righteous anger to go along with the facts you dickfaces can't debate. Hang a label on THAT.

One fact you spouted off about was the fact that the Cole was bombed by Israel and blamed on the Iranians. Crack a history book you dim witted neanderthal. Iran wasn't blamed. Al Qaida was held liable, as was the Sudanese government. I don't know where your hatred comes from but it really muddies your thoughts. You should try decaf.

My fault for actually speaking about two different incidences in the same sentance, that obviously confused your already overtaxed intellect. perhaps if you spent less time with some strange hobos balls in your mouth you'd have a better view of your monitor and would actually be able to understand what your betters are writing about. Why bother anyway? Al Qaida was created by the fucking CIA to start with douchebag, but I'm sure you already read that in your history book right? In between giving hand relief to your instructors? Why don't you forget about it loser? If I wanted to take the time I could crush you like a cheap oil can but I gotta work, which is probably something else you know nothing about.

Why are you blaing PeanutGallery for your incoherence? You said "Israel DID attack the USS Cole, it's a fact". And your defense is that you were speaking about two difference "incidences" (I assume you meant incidents) in the same "sentance"? How so? What exactly are you confusing things with? Even among the crackpots I haven't normally heard of people saying Israel had ANYTHING to do with the USS Cole bombing. Are you possibly confusing this with the USS Liberty?

Swing and a miss. I like your assumptions. They make me laugh at how pathetic you seem. I don't need to flex my cyber muscle to out duel you, it's quite evident that the whole world hates you. Your anti-semitic, homophobic rants are quite entertaining. You have almost turned over every forum cliche there is! Your parents must be so proud of their little scrapper.

best film. You have to watch it a couple of times. I saw on DVD after the critics killed it stone dead and I agreed with them. But I saw it again and I laughed myself sick. and saw it again and I laughed myself sick all over again. The scene with Stiller and wilson and the computer is priceless but by far and way the funniest thing is scene with Ferrell as Mugatu in office. Magutu: behold the derek zoolander museum for kids who cant read good but want to learn stuff. Zoolander: What is this?... a muesuem for ants, how can they read if they can even fit inside the building.

Waaaaay over-hyped. Very uneven script, pacing is bad. Unlikeable/unfunny characters (Jack Black, particularly).

I just couldn't find that many laughs in this one. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny either. Maybe it was Jack Black's completely superfluous character.

i came in expecting big things. but maybe reading up on the film kinda killed it. i can count just a handful of times that i laughed, and most of those were during the "previews". how many times do we need to see ben stiller falling on the ground throwing his arms up in the air? props to all involved, but it's sad that it started feeling redundant half way through.

Definitely agree that this movie did not live up to the hype, and was not nearly as funny as the two other comedies with the same premise -- Three Amigos and Galaxy Quest. I enjoyed Tropic Thunder, but nothing in it was as funny as the fake trailers that opened the film. I also thought Tom Cruise looked awkward doing comedy.

"Tropic Thunder" had some good performances, some good, EVIL jokes and I didn't even hate Ben Stiller this time around. Downey was PERFECT. But, does anybody else think that it didn't go far ENOUGH? That there were FAR more cynical, underhanded typical moviebiz tactics that could've been lampooned that were left untouched? As far as satires of Hollywood go, this thing didn't have a patch on "The Player" or "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Certainly nowhere near "Team America".

I liked RDJ in this movie, but all his good scenes were in the commercials/trailers ... I hate it when they do that. Everyone else was ok or a little annoying. I liked Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents and Zoolander. I also liked Jack Black in School of Rock. But in this movie, they were both annoying, uninteresting, and a little painful to watch at times. I was actually pretty hyped up to watch this movie due to Downey's involvement after the success of Ironman. I don't know ... it simply wasn't that funny. Watch Pineapple Express instead ... that movie actually had an interesting plot and the performances were good, genuine, and most importantly funny. James Franco played a really great stoner ... hilarious!

Well this has certainly been a talkback to sum up the best and worse of them. Despite hating online bitchfests, I have to say I was thoroughly enjoying the US vs. UK stuff. I'm a Brit (reluctantly - I'm Scottish) but the banter made me warm pleasantly to both sides of the argument. Shame it then took a much more unpleasant turn, but no country can be held accountable for every dickhead it spawns. And Ray - fair play for keeping the flag flying, mate, but referring to your 'English BUTT' doesn't help your argument. Shame on you, fella. Can I recommend the fabulous Nick Nolte flick North Dallas Forty for an insight into the NFL experience. (Why no films about rugby though, apart from This Sporting Life and the crap Up N Under?) Getting back to Tropic Thunder - good fun. But that fucking redband trailer! Gives away the last terrific joke pay-off, as well as a genuinely surprising early bath for one character. Annoying. Regarding drugs and Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder doesn't exactly skimp on that front either - Jack Black's cold turkey description of what he'd do for a hit is a definite highlight. Similarly, the blackface argument doesn't hold water. It is covered already in the film and should only offend those pricks who go with the sole intention of BEING offended, imho. And why not Downey Jr. for the Best Support Oscar? What comedy precedents do we have? Kevin Kline doing stereotyped Italian impressions? Mira Sorvino, Whoopi Goldberg and Marisa Tomei as broadly-(but admittedly brilliantly) played stereotypes? Hattie MacDaniel? Downey's character is set up for ridicule, but at least some sort of point is being made. And wonderfully acted, at that. ***MINOR SPOILER AHEAD*** And is it just me, or is he a ringer for Mel Gibson at the end, once he sheds his fake persona? Christ, you could DROWN in the irony.

there wsa 3 other peole in the cinema (middle of the day - I should've been working, oh well) Yeah it was funny, but not but gustingly (hee hee) funny. Downey Jr ruled the school and Jack Black was suitably insane but I didnt laugh my ass off all the way thru. Maybe it was the lack of people in the theatre - I dont know. I did laugh a little too loud at the "Prop Head' bit and yes The Cruiser nailed it
I would have cast Nick Cage in the Speedman role.
