His show's getting somewhat weaker though. Some brilliant episodes here and there, but mostly not as strong as The Daily Show. TDS actually had quite the stinker the other night, but still, more consistent than Colbert.

...me a I REALLY want it to. The only films I've seen where this works to great effect is in Imax Discovery documentaries (like Monsters of the Deep, etc). The rest all leave something to be desired...as does Dreamworks animation. Did they do The Incredibles? That's the only movie in that style that kept my attention throughout.

Nothing any filmmaker does (3D, etc) will ever save the theater-going experience. It's over. There has been a cultural shift and people today are just too inconsiderate and annoying to get people to keep going to the movies. Cell phones and text messaging have completely transformed the audience into the fat blobs as depicted in Wall-E. (Fat between the ears, that is.) It's too late to turn back. All these cell phone addicted retards have ruined the movie going experience. Who want to go to the movies and have to put up with this crap?! No thanks. I'll take my 52" plasma home theater anyday.

Until then, I don't know if it will work...but animated 3D works for sure...and it's not going anywhere (hopefully). It will win over more and more people if some more good 3D films are released. Zemeckis is doing A Christmas Carol which seems boring, but it will be a good animated 3D film that will help sell the format further.

Is this why there is record box office this year? Yeah, much of it is inflation but admissions sure aren't dropping quickly. As long as there are dumb teens who need somewhere to go on a date, the theater-going experience will live on and prosper. I agree with of what you say though and that's why I only see films in the theater three or four times a year at this point...but I'm not in the target demo.

I could be wrong, but I think at this point, it's just a matter of having digital projectors and those are growing in popularity anyhow. So 3D may just end up being a niche, but it should be around to stay this time. I haven't seen any live action 3D that works...like I said, Avatar will be the big test.

Are you nuts? I'll give you Antz (my favourite DWA) and Kung Fu Panda (which surprised me that i didn't hate it) but Over the Hedge is unfunny and looks awful! I love 3D, between IMAX and Real-D i've seen about 7 recent films in 3D plus the test footage of New Hope, Lord of the Rings, King Kong etc. It's awesome. That said most of the films done so far haven't been. They've relied on people only seeing the 3D to be called great. Beowulf for instance sucked if you looked past the effect. Monster House was the best of the recent ones.

i'm sure i've said this before on here but i hear the horror stories of people's theater experience and it shocks me. i dont if its because i'm in canada and we truly are "nice" but i've never had anything even close to what i read about here and other sites. i've been going to the movies since i'm 4 and i'm 31 now and i cant even remember a bad experience like those. maybe there's been some morons now and then but it was never to the point it ruined the experience or anything. no wonder so many americans seem to not like the experience so much if thats what you constantly deal with. granted i never go on opening night and shit and i usually see movies a week after they come so that might help but yeah.

I personally will not go to a crowded theater to see a movie..I will always go to an early or extra late show just to cut down on the probability of some annoying person sitting close to me. It usually works, but sometimes you still get tripped up. Of course it is a small % of the people at the theater who are assholes, but it only takes one...
Beowulf kicked ass, but...
by Rupee88
Aug 5th, 2008
08:29:18 AM
..it was not a movie that had a wide appeal to a general audience. It was very geeky and you had to really love the style of animation and the 3D to get off on it. The story was nothing special but didn't get in the way of the experience either. I liked how they animated Angelina Jolie and just gave her a PERFECT body...even better than in real life. And the character of beowulf was flawed and funny and the sequence with the dragon at the end in 3D was just one of the most fun I've had in a theater in years. So it just showed me the power of 3D for the first time and I am SOLD.

How about making movies exclusive to cinemas again, instead of simultaneously making everything available on the internet, DVD, satellite and whatever else a mere two months after a movie premiered. How about getting a handle on fuckin movie piracy. That could help.

I would love to see some of the films Harry listed - Dial M for Murder and The Creature From the Block Lagoon in the new 3D process. The old red and blue glasses were so annoying. While the 3D worked, the new process is so much better. It would be nice to actually see the films in 3D without the colored tint.

Harry, is the new 3-D process possible in a home theater setting? Would you need a special projector, or can it be achieved on a flat screen? I assume you would have to line the projection up properly to achieve the correct spacing of the image for 3D viewing.

Do you know if the new 3D images in theaters are produced by two projectors, or just one?

it doesn't feel like the picture is surrounding me. It feels like there is a glass screen a few feet in front of the actual theatre screen, and stuff is playing out in 3D inside there, and I'm watching it from outside. Like a hologram inside a glass cube or something. As a kid, I remember feeling like 3D came right out to touch me, but I'm not sure if it was somehow better back then, or if my imagination was just making up for it (probably the more likely scenario). Also, the glasses are uncomfortable to wear over my own glasses, lol. I need prescription 3D glasses.

by dundundles

3D IS a gimmick that will not last once the technology becomes available in the Home video market. However the giant screen experience of IMAX will never be duplicated at home. Chris Nolan knows this and is trying to push filmmaking in that direction. I like a 3d flick as much as the next person, but seeing those dark knight scenes in Imax was breathtaking. This is where the filmmaking community needs to put it's focus on, not 3D. James Cameron's Avatar will probably be amazing. But is he shooting in Imax? nope. His film will be dated when 3D hits the home market.

Wearing 3D glasses over regular glasses
by Nasty In The Pasty
Aug 5th, 2008
11:06:15 AM
This is the only problem I've had with the current process. It can't be THAT difficult to make some 3D specs that just clip onto your regular glasses, can it? They have clip-on sunglesses, so why not clip-on 3D glasses? The current ones just BARELY fit over my glasses, and it kind of ruins the experience when I'm worried about the 3D glasses scratching my lenses.
And Antz was the best Dreamworks movie EVER.

Jack David EC or MAD?
by ZeroCorpse
Aug 5th, 2008
12:01:19 PM
Harry-- Jack Davis' EC work is a bit different from his work with MAD. With EC it wasn't quite as cartoony, and he went for a more serious look. I assume this movie uses something more like the MAD Jack Davis art, which was fantastic stuff. He even used that style for a few movie posters.

That alone makes me interested. I'm eager to see western comedy animation break out of this trend of always looking like TOY STORY. Sure, the technology is the same, but the art style doesn't have to be. I'd hate for our CGI movies to end up like Japanese anime, with every one following the same "rules" for art, characterization, plot-lines, and story progression. There's a reason I loathe anime, and it's the same reason I'm starting to roll my eyes whenever I see a new American CGI animated feature: Homogenization.

You could cut up parts of ANTS, TOY STORY, SHREK, OVER THE HEDGE and other CGI toons, and splice them together into a new movie that would maintain the same basic story, with a damn near identical art style. I hate that.

My biggest argument with American animation right now is this trend to hire established, famous screen actors to voice the characters, instead of hiring new talent. It's ANIMATED. If there's anything that is conducive to letting new people break into movies, it's animation!!! Their performance is what matters-- Not the name recognition! Without a face attached, it's detrimental to hire famous celebrities. When I watch TOY STORY, I hear Tom Hanks and Tim Allen and Cliff from Cheers. If they'd hired voice actors instead of screen actors, then we'd have ORIGINAL characters without the baggage of their own celebrity.

That's why things like VENTURE BROS and FUTURAMA are at the top of the heap. When they first appeared, the voices weren't all that familiar. Sure, Fry was also Stimpy, and Patrick Warburton was mildly famous, but for the most part these shows introduced new CHARACTERS, and those voices WERE those characters. When I hear The Monarch, I don't think of some other character from some other show/movie. He's ONLY The Monarch. The same goes for Hank, Dean, and most of the other characters. The same goes for Fry, The Professor, Bender, and Zoidberg. (Although I have to say Phil LaMarr is overused in animation, and his range of different voices is mediocre. He's getting to be the black Frank Welker: I know he'll ALWAYS be there whenever a particular character needed in the script. For Welker it's sidekicks, animals and guys who look like Freddie from Scooby Doo. For LaMarr it's ALL Black men. Are there no other Black male voice actors?)

Where was I? Oh yeah. Deviation in art styles!

All I'm saying is that it almost seems like every studio is looking at what Pixar did with TOY STORY and copying it point-by-point. They want it to "look like Toy Story" and "Sound like Toy Story" and "feature BIG NAME CELEBRITIES" (even if their voices are too recognizable or they SUCK at VO work).

Shake it up, people! DO SOMETHING UNIQUE!

Is the estate of Jack Davis being paid for this?

... that's all we're gonna get!! Seriously, 3D won't do shit to save an industry that doesn't need saving in the first place . . . it just needs to make GOOD, ORIGINAL films . . . what a concept.

Beowulf NEVER needed to be in 3D . . . it was a blah film with a gimmick, that's it.

One main problem I have with 3D is that you have to wear the glasses for it to work . . . for anyone who DOESN'T wear glasses all the time, it can be very distracting . . . if they're not squeezing my head or pinching my nose from being the wrong size, I'm always AWARE of them . . . it's a filter to the image on the screen, and you'll never get passed that . . . keeps me out of a film every time.

I agree with the idea that IMAX is the one that will eventually stick. My lord, TDK in IMAX was UNBELIEVABLE. I'll pay to see that any day . . . 3D will die a second death, to be sure.

The problem is, you don't have to be near anyone annoying to be affected by their poor behavior. The dumbfucks that play with their cell phones during the movie don't seem to grasp the idea that a device that emits a bright light in a dark theater acts as a fucking flashlight and everyone sitting behind them can see it. Every movie I've seen in a theater this summer (about 6 or 7 movies) have all been ruined by shits with their phones on. At one point during Wall-E, I could see at least 5 phones on in front of me, and I was sitting about half way back from the front. The stupid bitch in the row in front of me must have looked at her phone about 20 times in 2 hours. Fuck that. 3-D will not stop people from being assholes.

Why the hell are we seeing all these advances in 3D and shit when we REALLY ought to be seeing advances in the FRAMERATE of the films? Around 72 should be sufficient (3x24 in case you are morons). Establish that as a world-wide standard. Start implementing. Immersion is so fucking much more dependent on the framerate -- what the fuck does 3D help with the stuttering pans?

And I do agree with Bloo-- Cell phones need to be banned in theaters. Frankly, I wish theaters would go back to the way they were in the old-old days, when they had ushers (REAL ushers, not trash-cleaning ticket-takers) and balconies. You know, back when they'd show shorts and newsreels before the feature, instead of Coke commercials? Back when the ushers STAYED IN THE THEATER and dealt with problems as they happened..?

Yeah. Get off my lawn.

It is slated for a March release, for now, in IMAX 3D http://tinyurl.com/5kw2ya I don't know how they are going to run MvA3D within three weeks of Watchmen though. I hope they move MvA3D up into December, or Watchmen either way they need at least 5 weeks apart on the releases. Not all IMAX theaters can run a 2D and a 3D print at the same time. Rando Clarisian: IMAX 3D is run by two projectors simultaneously. RealD is digital and, I believe, runs off of one projector head, as I understand it, it is software enhanced 3D technology.
