yeah, the thing about wolf creek (which i'm huge on but it was ok) is that in oz there really are these little communities, many of them dieing and they are like traveling into a different world. Most of them are really great salt of the earth types but it is a bit like texas chainsaw massacre or whatever, you get off the main road and you could be anywhere. The difference is that the desolate parts of oz are seriously big. Oz is the size of the us, but has like 5 cities, all around the edge of it. In my experience, the people most often offended by Verhoeven's treatment of the book are the ones who didn't get Heinlein's much more sly critique of society and had taken the book to be an endorsement of their own far-right political thoughts. The second group understood Heinlein's critique and felt that Verhoeven's take was much more ham-fisted. The third and largest group are the asshats who didn't even understand Verhoeven's satire. Prison Break is just awesome fun, it comes on Monday nights when my brain is kind of fried and its easy to follow, then its followed by Terminator which I am always to out of it to fully know whats going on. Plus Prison Break is doesn't kill off the best actors after like 3 appearances like Heroes did to Malcom Macdowell who was mad he was off'ed. Sixth Sense isn't as good the second time around, but I have a feeling it would hold up slightly better if you only watched it once every 7 or 8 years. You guys know me, I'm one of those spazatroids that gives M.Night no end of grief because I think he's incredibly gifted but wastes his talents on his poor scripts and inflated ego. And Unbreakable mostly had me up until the third act.

Full Metal Jacket. Wasn't the novella it was based on called something like The Short Timers? Here's a little known fact. Michael Herr who was a war correspondent in Vietnam wrote a book based on his experiences called Dispatches. Parts of Apocalypse Now and FMJ have been lifted from Dispatches, namely his one-time meetings with the odd grunt that was beyond surreal (the GI in ApocNow with the grenade launcher who hits the VC over the wall taunting him and the helicopter gunner in FMJ who is shooting farmers in the rice paddies).

The movie endings above? Nice. The Godfather is the fanboy cliche choice but that's because it truly is the best choice. Not only best ending ever but one of the best movie shots ever. A close second would be, yes, Dr. Strangelove with Peter Sellers jumping out of the wheelchair before the Doomsday device goes off.

Prison Break? Looks like Jarv and I are in agreement again (3 for 3 this morning) as the first season was great. But season two lost me, especially the hillbilly's character and the inability of the other escapees to just kill him and his odd ability to be able to kill people with only one good hand.

I don't think any sequels that were better than the original were missed above.

They'll be Scientologists before his contract with Galaxy expires. I'll bet 1 million internets on it.

In any case, it was a force encroaching upon a presumably primitive and inferior race, and then proclaiming their enemy evil after retaliation.

The cowboys and indians thing worked well enough for me. The terrorists reading isn't as good, and kind of contemporary knee-jerk.

However, it's entirely likely the new film may go that way. I think it's more of a historically relevant view, than just relegated to the last ten or 15 years of contemporary events.

The story itself is goofy to the point of being distracting but the banter makes it worth watching again and again.

Starship Troopers is a big budget B movie. Nothing more or nothing less, and it's not really something to be ashamed of. Robocop in concept is just a B movie, but what they did with it was so much more.

Speaking of Gary Sinese and Forest Gump, the other day we were listing effects shots that knocked us on our ass the first time we saw them. Regardless if you hate the movie, everyone here must admit seeing Sinese without his legs was the ultimate "how did they do that?" moment.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is one of those movies that has a lot of bad but also a lot of good going for it. Rickman and Freeman overcome Costner's accent and a less than stellar performance by Slater. Plus, the summer it came out was one of those awesome summers you endlessly reminisce about and makes everything associated with it that much better: starting out in college, mad in love with your girlfriend at the time, discovering the Nintendo with your buds and drinking beer around a campfire on the beach. Summer of '91. Good times.

With Hyde- first time was good, and the mix of suit/ CGI was a good idea, but they nobbed it completely with the Uberhyde at the end and the design with the hunchback was just horrible.

I like Jason Flemyng and have done ever since Lock Stock, but the "good show Edward" nonsense in it was him phoning in a performance.

Best Poirot- Easy: David Suchet. I don't know if you get them, but British TV does Poirot a lot and he is now pretty much definitive. He's better than Ustinov.
