There were attempts to make an animated Doctor Who series in the late 80s/early 90s that fell apart. This is not surprising at all, although it is nice to have a clip to go along with the promo animated stills that we saw 4 years ago. The "fake" SMG providing the voice sounds like the same voice actress used on the Buffy Xbox games...which were pretty good.

This didnt seem to be very good at all. Admittedly, Xander's "the harder they what?" line was hilarious. But it didnt even come close to getting me excited. Then again, the fact that I know it will never be may have just gotten me prematurely going against it so as not to hurt my spirit.

I was excited for the series back when it was in development. I wish it actually made it to air. The same writers/producers/actors working on the animated version as the live action version? I don't know if the development team changed on Chaos Bleeds or what but the control and overall game mechanics were infuriating. that being said, the voice work was top notch in both games as this giselle Loren really has smg's vocal inflections down, as I wouldn't notice it wasn't gellar unless you made a point of mentioning it. This little presentation just depresses me as a missed opportunity to tell some ridiculous high school adventures that in no way could have been made on the live action show for budgetary reasons. Oh well, guess I'll just dust off the original Buffy game and give it a spin, you can't beat the first fight with Spike who talks shit non stop while your squaring off till you hit him with about 4 vials of hell fire making him make a hasty retreat.

Maybe this was "leaked" in an attempt at viral marketing to get this project up for consideration again. Could explain why the issue arriving after the Fray saga in season 8 is going to be a high school flashback drawn in the style of this cartoon...

But yeah, as a Buffy fan, it didn't seem all that great. The humor seemed a little flat and predictable, and everybody sounded weird (even though it was mostly really them). But then again, it was a promo FOR the network. So i guess it had to pander to some extent, showing how much like other cartoons it COULD be like. And the dragon (or whatever ) was a way of showing the large scale possibilities without the real world budget restrictions. Now the Giles/Ripper BBC show I could really get behind. But it would HAVE to take place during the run of the original series, when he was away during season 6, and NOT post-series, season 8 comic era. (Christ I'm a geek. But at least I'm not one of those geeks that thinks he's better then other kinds of geeks. Those are the worst. Those, and the Stargate fans.)

I don't think this takes place during freshman year. I could be wrong, but i read somewhere that it would take place like during season 2, but between all the episodes from the real show. I'm guessing the cartoon was to stay in perpetual standstill, time never really advancing or getting to the point where Angel turns to Angelus or anything. I don know. I do know Dawn was to be in it. Though, freshman year would've been cool (though made no continuity sense) if it had involved that Eric Balfor character that was killed in the first episode. I always felt bad for that guy. It seems he was pretty good friends with Willow and Xander, but nobody ever mentions or seems to miss him again.

It sounds to me like the show was to be set during Season 1 ('97) and she mistakenly referred to it as Buffy's freshman year. I know she was a producer on the show, but she started during Season 3, so it seems like an honest mistake. I saw an interview with Marti Noxon where she jokes about the fact that even she can't fully explain Season 5 even though she's the producer. In this interview http://tiny.cc/SLRVI it sounds like it is supposed to take place during Season 1: "For the fans, we've always seen it as Episode 7.5. Buffy has met Angel." That makes sense, since that's the season with the least episodes, and even some of the actual episodes were very uneventful ( stuff like "The Pack" or "Teacher's Pet" would've been throw away jokes or things that happen to background characters in later seasons), and it didn't have a huge story or character arc. They could've just made up stuff to fit around what we already saw (some of the planned episodes of the cartoon actually sound better then real season 1 episodes). And yeah, regarding Jesse, he would've fit into The Wish, but I always thought he should've showed up in "Conversations with Dead People" in the last season (and according to this site http://tiny.cc/HP2V2 that was considered: "A second option was for Xander to meet his long-dead friend Jesse, who was vamped and staked in season one's The Harvest.")

and the improbability of the scene with the dragon: as funny as Xander's "the harder they what?" line was, it seemed kinda silly that they'd just stand there as a dragon crashed through the roof and ate Buffy. Apart perhaps from her stabbing creatures with wooden stakes. It's clearly kind of rough with the voices and animation, but it's on par with a lot of what CN does, and maybe better since I know the writers can bring it. Also Willow being attracted to Xander again (as she was in the beginning of the show), would probably have openned up some doors to controversy that probably someone who'd produce a cartoon show doesn't want to open if you know what I mean. But basically this looks like it treats Buffy as though she's an old American icon like Archie or Scooby Doo, and that's kind of special. I remember this show would have featured Dawn as though she was always there, so for anyone troubled about continuity, forget it, this was an elseworlds bit of fun, and no doubt would have featured current pop culture references. Thanks for pointing the way to this, Herc. Ignore the bitches who hate Whedon and Buffy and you and life, never stop posting this stuff.

Just a husband whose wife loves Buffy, unfortunately, and as a result have been exposed to it's direness on many occasions. Sorry to burst the bubble. I stand by my view of the show, if it hadn't had all this ridiculous fanboy hyperbole spouted about it I could see it simply for what it is - a poor show. Add in all the hyperbole though and to me it is overrated, obviously. And please, spare me the comments about the singing episode or 'Hush' being exceptional moments of television. No, they were just half decent episodes in an otherwise mindless show written by a man who evidently thinks he's a lot more clever than he actually is. Teen angst and martial arts don't equate to deep exploration of the human condition as so many seem to think regarding this show.

I'm always so confused by stuff like this. Would the idea be that the cartoon is REALLY for eight-year-olds, but hopes to drag along a good chunk of the twenty- and thirty-something year-old audience of the original show? Or would it have been truly aimed at a more adult audience, with a little bleedover kid appeal because it's a cartoon? (Probably more the former than the latter, given the tone of this clip). This new phenomenon of new a generation of (American) adults interested in cartoons must be a big challenge for programmers (who are always ten years behind the curve anyway). I would be really curious to see the demographic breakdown of what percentage of people who watches different cartoons come from what age ranges.

I kind of feel the same way about it as I do for Star Trek: I have enjoyed watching both franchises a lot (more at some times than at others), but I feel like the fanbase for both shows probably does more to hurt than help the shows' public image. The weirdness of Star Trek fans is obviously legendary, but, as for Buffy, the problem I always have is that the fans take the show so SERIOUSLY, like we've found the next Shakespeare or Melville. They're teaching college seminars on Buffy, writing dissertations, fiercely defending the merit of every single silly detail and canonizing the whole franchise as sacred, and I always think--it's a good show, but it's not THAT good. Will people still be talking about it and watching it in a hundred years? Will it still be an active franchise with remakes and retellings and novelizations and parodies--will it even enter into the arena of general public literary possession (like, say, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Frankenstein from ~100 years ago?) and reach the point where you can refer to it and anyone will know what you're talking about? I dunno...

I love the general idea. I however would set it post series, with the army of slayers to avoid continuity problems (a la Enterprise). That way you can make modern pop references. It needs to be on adult swim and of a more serious nature. I was impressed with the horrific nature of Hellboy: Blood and Iron. I thought that story would have made an excellent Buffy tale. That had the right tone, Scary yet full of humor. Not a kids show at all. It would be more successful if it appealed to existing Buffy fans, not trying to create new ones by making it appeal to kids. The kids will catch on soon enough.

It's supposed to be bad dialogue. The original show posited, very logically, that very few vampires have the way with words we associate with a Dracula. Most vampires, in fact, are probably just halfwits who were stupid enough to get themselves bitten by a vampire. Also funny is the way Buffy mocks his strained attempts at vocal menace. Now I'm not saying this show would've been as good as the live-action series, but it would have employed a lot of the writers who worked on the not-animated show. "Star Trek: The Animated Series" worked the same strategy, but with much more limited animation.

to make this. Built in audience, kids would love it. I'd venture to say this would have had a similar audience to the Dungeons and Dragons show years ago. It's a complete mystery to me why this never flew. From what I remember, Mutant Enemy was never given the budget that they wanted and they refused to make the show on a shoestring because they didn't want to hurt the quality. Oh and I'm sure years from now all those scholarly books on Buffy will be evidence that it was such a 'poor' show. Idiots.

Hey sugar teets...make your money while the looks last, lest you end up like Susanne Somers doing Infomercials at age 60 just to keep the lights on. Damned near every actor get a big head after the first success...and instead of banking it fully while they can..decided they are creating "art", instead of "entertainment" and eventually blowhards themselves right outta a job. One week it's 250K an episode..the next they are reduced to making $25k commercials..and damned happy to get them. Wise up girly.

I actually liked it. The art dtyle was hard a Jack Kirby meets Bruce Timm kind of vibe going for it and although the wit was a bit dry, it was also a pilot...sucks it never made it to air.

In all honesty, I liked the show. But, the one thing that I hated was the arrogant attitude of Sarah Michelle Geller. If you have seen her interviews or read sci-fi or people magazine than you know what I am talking about. One small example is that, She once talked about how she said she might or might not invite the guy who plays spike to a party. Another example is that she did not even put her voice on the animated show when all the other actors did. It doesn't take much time. Plus, she never appeared on Angel after her show went off. She is an arrogant dumb bitch. Karma is a bitch and what goes around has come around. Sarah Michelle Geller has not been seen for the last couple of years. She is not even hot. She is a flat chested short twit. I am not saying I would not let her suck my dick because I would. However, the next day I would not pick up the phone when she called me. Seriously, go on spring break close your eyes and the first chick you run into will look hotter than her. No descent Director would hire this twit. Her acting skills are descent but, she is definitely no Merrill Streep. The only reason she is known at all is because of that show. If Josh Wheadon had hired anybody else than they would also be known. She was so arrogant and ungrateful to Wheadon that she did not even appear on Angel in it's last season. In a year or two no one will even remember her name. The animated Buffy looks hotter than her. They should do a new movie or a new show and Bring in a hotter Buffy.

Oh, the animation sucked. When will the idiots out there realise that the Batman "cheap" looking square face cartoons look like shit. 90% of american cartoons look like that pathetic style. Which is why 90% of Amerca's youth have turned to the cool more realistic looking humans of Japenese. Don't get me wrong, I like Batman the Animated series but lets all be honest it looks like shit with Batman have a cube jaw. I miss the 80's when cartoons looked cool and more human like from GI Joe to Silver Hawks to Bionic Six.

Squirrel please. There are only a few Anime projects that are of worth...those being Starblazers (yes, I'm using their American titles), Battle of the Planets, Trans Zor-Z, Voltron (Lionbot) and Cowboy Bebop. The rest is unadulterated krap like Pokemon and Dragonball Z. Sorry, but Akira is overrated and always has been, with Ghost in the Shell being nearly as overrated too. And why is it that the Japanese crave an animation form where the (Japanese) characters look white? And even better...why do they worship Michael Jackson? Sorry, but I'll take "American" animation over 99% of anime, thank you very much. Besides, anime fans make Trekkies look like studs.

It's still not too late to pick it up. I'd be right on that show if it aired. It seems like this medium could concentrate more heavily on the humor and action. Some of the jokes were genuinely funny, not just filler for where funny things should be placed which is what most TV writing delivers.

the character is stylized. If you don't understand what that means, what it's function is and why it is necessary, you have no business trying to convince others you know anything about animation, or illustration. Photo-realism in cartoons is only possible via rotoscoping, which is a point of controversy in animation. Even the great Ralph Bakshi has taken a lot of shit for utilizing it.

You are an idiot because you in the same post call out Batman the animated series as being poorly animated which it was not because you don't like the way the drawings were done yet you applaud Silver Hawks which was one of the worst animated cartoons of all time because you liked the way it looked. Grow a brain. People that bash the animated Clone Wars and Samurai Jack as being poorly animated also like you, sir just don’t get it. That said…the animation in this Animated Buffy is pretty crap…the drawings I could have lived with.
