It's got the talent in front of the camera, and the title alone will get people interested. I have a feeling this will be Smith's biggest film to date. Sure, that's not saying much (sorry Kevin, but you'd probably say the same thing), but I predict a huge hit. Dogma is the one I've rewatched the least amount of times. Too much exposition. 80% of the movie consists of the characters explaining the plot to each other. Great concept, though. And yes, he needs to stop casting his wife. Certain directors can get away with it. David Mamet and Tim Burton, for instance, because their wives happen to be great actresses. But Smith casting his wife in every movie just makes her seem desperate for attention and fame. It just doesn't do anything for the movie.

But the fact is that there is a group of people out there who, when they have discovered his movies it sets off of little bell in their as if the movie is speaking directly to them. Mallrats is a movie i just totally love. And it will survive for much longer than movies with massive budgets and and massive ticket sales because there are a group of people who will just watch it over and over, long after they know every line in the movie. Another factor that makes smith substantial, a new generation of hit makers see his work as inspiring. One day others will be inspired by them and, many years from now the people that they inspired will go looking through the movies that these long dead people liked and they will come up with little know movie like those made by smith. It is that diecast fan base that will see these movies last.

I remember your work years ago on the talkback that KS joined... you destroyed him. That was one of the all-time greatest TBs I've ever read. Props to you, Mr. Van Rant. Now, I'm not blinded with KS hate, but for some reason I enjoy reading these ferocious talkbacks. Perhaps this is the refiner's fire he needs to purge his weaknesses? He really has to stop putting his girl into those movies. "P-Whipped" doesn't even begin to describe how it comes off.

Clerks 2 was shot on film NOT Hi-Def. It had a digital intermediate in the post process, but this would have no negative effect on the exposure. Perhaps you just didn't like the cinematography? Also, most of the new high end digital systems could cope with such situations admirably if used in the proper manner.
