One of the greatest, most riveting documentaries ever made. Couldn't agree more, and I sought it out in college because of those Siskel and Ebert raves.

This is irrelevant and self-indulgent. I come here for news, damn it, like the name of the website implies. This "movie" (documentaries aren't movies) is, like, 25 years old by now probably.

This was the first and only documentary I paid to see in theaters and at the time I couldn't believe I paid 6 bucks to watch a movie about kids playing basketball. I left the theater blown away by what I had seen. I have since purchased the movie on VHS and later on the excellent Criterion DVD and I couldn't agree more on with Siskel and Ebert's reviews. I couldn't believe that this movie didn't win the Academy Award, but was not even NOMINATED!
Documentaries aren't movies?

Eh? And if free access to quality cinema like HOOP DREAMS isn't cool, then I don't know what is. Chumkid, you're just embarassing yourself.

Documentaries aren't movies? Have you seen Hoop Dreams? Bowling for Columbine? Paradise Lost? Crumb? The best movies evoke an emotion in you! Can you not watch these movies and be affected or informed in some way?

We give you permission not to come back here. Seriously, it's alright. Unfortunately, this website was built on this sort of thing: Harry's strange, random interested and love for classic films. So don't feel bad or guilty if you never ever, ever, ever, ever come back to this website. We'll be okay, we promise.

The title of this website is AINT IT COOL NEWS. This article doesn't have anything to do with the word "Ain't". The word isn't even used anywhere in the article. It's isn't even in the name of movie! And why o they keep talking about movies?? There word MOVIE isn't part of the name of this website. Dammit, why doesn't everybody see the world in the little box that I choose to put it in? Thats another thing, there's never enough content on the word "It" which is also in the title. They even refuse to post my Cousin It centric slash-fic I continue to send in...

I remember that my eighth grade teacher made everyone in the class watch Hoop Dreams. It took us the better part of the week. It was also the year Ripken broke Gherig's record and she had us all send in letters congratulating him. Well, now I feel old.

Really needs to be an edit feature so I don't fuck up titles like that. Title should have been: American Teen was good, but Hoop Dreams...

Because we have balls, and sometimes we take them home with us when we get upset! Like, your ornery little cousin who throws a temper tantrum when he doesn't get his way. That's us, dude. When I see that Region 1 label on a DVD player I think of myself as a child throwing a conniption fit and tossing myself on the floor of the living room, flailing my arms and legs about until they just get my my God damned pony.

is one the finest documentaries ever made. absolutely fucking brilliant. I loved every moment of it. and I liked the hero/villain aspect of the coaches and I loved the way it chartered the fortunes of both families. outstanding. one of the coaches was really obnoxious and I wondered whay there hasnt been a follow up.

those kids are up to now... I'd like to see a new documentary showing their lives (and their kids lives) now. It might also be interesting if they started a new Hoop Dreams documentary for kids growing up right now. Though we'd have to wait 10 years to see it.
Hulu is good but not enough movies yet, still young

For those of you who havent seen it, it basically says what anyone with any common sense should already know - that the chances of you becoming a professional basketball star are pretty much none. The best player you've ever seen in real life ... is nowhere near good enough. Unless you are 6'8" 250 with 4% body fat and a 28+ inch vertical - you have no shot. Two kids try - and fail. In other breaking news - some loser just bought a lottery ticket - and lost.
I liked it

Seriously, you can get "Hoop Dreams" from Netflix but Hulu has the entire Jonny Sokko in all its poor production glory. Man in Suit!

I am a guy who is really put off by the categorization of films when it comes to awards and how documentaries and animated films are deemed lesser and given their own categories. Hoop Dreams is one of the best documentaries ever made and therefore one of the best films ever made.
This was awesome.

I was made to watch Hoop Dreams in eighth grade. Maybe much like being forced academically to read great literature can leave a sour taste in your mouth for a book, this gave me a dislike of the film. I saw a couple of dumb, sad kids getting used like tools and it just made me angry more than anything else. This makes me wonder if I saw the same documentary some of you seem to have seen. Now's my chance to give it a rewatch.
