Once, he was one of the most exciting directors in the world. But his work has been campy for an awfully long time. I remain a fan of his early work. His last truly good film was STARMAN.

And since when is it what have you done lately?...you don't stop being awesome because of some bad flicks...fuck his greatness will always be intact...HALLOWEEN, The THING, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, THE FOG, ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, DARK STAR, fuck some filmakers are lucky to have 1 influential and classic flick...thats 6....shit his bad stuff is still miles ahead of todays horror shit. So umm maybe give him a chance ok...geez...like fuck....come on.

...I just read in a newspaper (Metro.co.uk - not the most reliable) that Nolan WILL be doing the next Batman, and WILL be featuring the Riddler and that said Riddler will be Johnny Depp. I also heard from another source that there is a grain of truth in the story because even though the script still needs work, the studios are keen to make another since Dark Knight box office has not been affected by the credit crunch!! Strong ticket sales and the fear that Bale will get tied up in the Terminator franchise, has made studio execs impatient. If its true - It is awesome. As for Nic Cage and this project...unless its a shawshank type of movie concentrating on the relationships and darkness of prison, this just wont appeal...

I really loved Cigarette Burns from Master of Horror tv show too. Vampires, Ghosts of Mars had their moments, but not enough. Still, it's an impressive resume of awesomeness: Halloween, The Thing, Escape from New York,Prince of Darkness, The Fog and not forgetting, Elvis the movie - Seriously, these are some of my all time favourite movies.

I think those guys just come with the prison set. Deal me in for this. We also need some respectable actor slumming like how Joan Allen is in that new DeathRace. I vote for Laura Linney, it's time she got into absurd action features.

Henstridge kicked ass, as did Statham. You got Pam Grier, lesbian innuendo, ghost of aliens possessing humans and turning them into masochistic killing machines, some good gore, some creepy moments, good score. awesome ending.

Sure, Statham's character just seemed to dissapear about halfway through for no reason but what can you do.

I regard GoM as a B cult movie with a lot of similarites too Assault on Precicnt 13, though not as good.

Call it a guilt pleasure I guess but there has to be some other fans of it.

This can only ever be good news.

Wow, carpenter doing a film where an anti-hero emerges to kick some ass? Didn't see that one coming.* *It should be noted that I love 70-80's (and even some of early 90's Carpenter). That's why it's been so frustrating to watch the guy burn-out. I mean, how could somebody who created such an amazing character/film in Snake Plissken shit all over their own creation by making the atrocity that is Escape From L.A? And for any of you douchebags that say, "he just wanted to make a campy, fun, film," that's a bunch of crap and you know it. Stop being an apologist for him when you know he was just looking for the paycheck because his weed supply was running low. I mean seriously, compare The Thing to Ghosts of Mars? Exactly how high was carpenter when he was making that film? I would have love to have seen the pitch, "I'll remake Assault on Precinct 13, only the gangsters are now Martians....or possibly cross-dressers." Damn you Carpenter, damn you to Hell.

people missed the point on Escape From LA . It was corny and cliche and over the top ON PURPOSE!!! It wasn't gonna be gritty and cool and tough like the first one . The first one was representative of New York in the late 70's early 80's . The sequel was rep. of LA in the late 80's early 90's . I thought it was kinda brilliant and very very fun ! Carpenter needs to bring us a Jack Burton sequel !

It seemed like he lost something after the 80s tho. His movies in that era had a certain mood and vibe to them. Kinda like an air of paranoia. You can sense it in Halloween, The Thing, They Live, etc. Even in comedies like Big Trouble in Little China. Haven't really cared for his stuff since then. (Never saw Mouth of Madness tho.)

The last watchable thing he did was In the Mouth of Madness. That had some genuine jolts. He's been on a cold streak for like 12 years. Most of his latter day work looks really cheap and shot very bland.

I remember being excited to watch Ghosts of Mars on video -- it was being marketed as a sci fi Rio Bravo directed by John Carpenter...Cool Right? Maybe Carpenter can recapture the brilliance of The Thing and his many other classics, but I doubt it.
