I just hope Soderberg doesn't get all romantic and only shows us the heroic and idealist side of Che. I hope he portrays him for the cold blooded killer and sociopath that he was as well. As long as it's not some pro che/rage against the machine propaganda piece I'll gladly sit for 4 plus hours.

By his own account the dude had 2,500 people killed without so much as a hint of due process after the Cuban revolution, and those are the ones he mentions himself. His office had a window which faced the wall where the executions were happening. I think this takes our boy Che into sociopath territory.

Judging from the last half of that trailer, most of the dialogue that was said was praising Che and showing him as a kind and loving man. That bieng said, looks like Benecio nailed the part, even his accent is pretty spot on, a lot better than his spanish in traffic, I might check this out.

But he should not be portrayed as a sociopath either, or rather, he should be portrayed honestly and the brutal acts he is responsible for should be shown along side the heroic acts he was responsible for. Castro and Che won Cuba for a reason - the US supported a brutal right wing regime that oppressed its people (what a novelty in Latin America) and allowed the mob to do whatever it wanted. I don't believe in deifying or demonizing, just let the facts speak for themselves. This is something I find everyone has a hard time doing. If I listen to one more simple-minded conservative say that Reagan won the Cold War, I am going to reverse my stance on gun control.

I have really been looking forward to this since that picture of Del Toro as Che a few months (maybe a year?) back. Benicio Del Toro is easily one of the greatest actors of the last decade and I am excited for this, but the trailer was a little cliche and didn't get me as pumped as I had hoped it would. still, I would sit through a four hour movie. Why not? This has the potential to be an incredible movie.

So, just because Che and Castro took over Cuba and took out the terrible right-wing regime, that makes them some kind of fucking saints? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Castro did such an ace job on Cuba that there are still people dying on makeshift boats while trying to escape from that fucking place? I know they have universal healthcare and great schools, but why do we then have Cubans dying to get out of there and into US? I'm from Russia and I lived in a socialist country. Socialism is a horror the likes of which no one should ever have to experience. It might have been a neat idea when Marx drafted his manifesto, but the reality is that nothing but death and misery and oppression comes from socialism. So, it ain't like what Castro and Che did for Cuba was anything to get all misty-eyed about. On the other hand, Soderberg is a genius and Del Toro is one too. Soderberg takes awesome chances and even his failures dwarf other people's best work. Solaris was brilliant and so was Schizoplois and Limey. And both got shit on by critics and audiences. His visual sense is astonishing and I've yet to see anything from him that wasn't captivating in cinematic terms. I just wish he shot all of the film in black and white, because it would suit the subject much more and the shots i the trailer that are in b&w look incredibly cool. And of course Del Toro looks frighteningly like Che. A few times in the trailer I thought they mixed in real footage of Che. Of course, Che was a brutal killer and does not deserve the adulation of brainless teenagers and college students. But he was a human being, flaws and all, and lived a very fascinating life. So, I hope that Soderberg can be as cool and analytical as he usually is with this movie. Personally I can't wait to see it.

Yeah, because doing his own thing, despite what everybody else thinks, has never worked out for Soderbergh. He mad Sex Lies, and it was relatively huge. But instead of going onto bigger, more high profile films, he made a black and white surrealistic period biopic and a non-sensical self financed comedy starring himself. I once read an article from the mid-90s which pretty much summed up as "What ever happened to Steven Soderbergh?" Then out of nowhere he made a couple of crime movies that were popular, then went on to direct two back to back films that got nominated for best picture and director at the same time. After winning an Oscar he makes a mainstream film filled with movies stars, followed up by a tiny-budget, improvised indie shot on video. So I don't think he has the same concern for the type of success validation that you do. I think he's done well doing pretty much what he feel like doing. Which makes him my favorite filmmaker, even though I can't say I like all of his films.

Visually Benicio looks more the part than he did in the early pictures; initially I thought he was too weatherbeaten for Che, who - despite your political leanings - was a handsome bugger when he was younger. So I'm optimistic, but I do hope it's gonna walk a balanced line. All significant historical figures have their light and dark sides after all.

Either the film is steaming poo or ... the risk-aversion playing out in Hollywood has gotten to the point it wont touch anything that isn't a sure thing or at the least a safe thing. And the line spoken in the trailer (in Spanish): "A country that doesn't know how to read or write, is a country that's easy to fool", gave me hope the movie would show him in an accurate light. But then it got all wishy-washy sentimental at the end. Hopefully, this won't be some biased left-wing interpretation of Che, but I'm still interested in seeing it. It looks like Del Toro will give a hell of a performance.
