Doug Jones will rule all if it stays anything like the script Mori posted. Between this and "My name is Jerry" Doug is getting face time without 20 pounds of make-up on top of it. Which is great!

anthology series (the Forrest Whitaker TZ, Masters of Horror/Science Fiction) just die on TV. I think Telemundo is beating Fear Itself in the same time slot.

It doesnt help that the eps so far have been fair at best. And the generic Canadian exteriors are bland, bland, bland.

I do like Fessenden's work, and Doug Jones is a plus, so I'll be tuning in. BTW, having John Carpenter on your resume has got to be a dream come true.

Oh God yes! When America's Got Talent and MXC ripoff Wipeout top the ratings, is it any surprise that Fear Itself stuggles to find viewers. Remember, ABC scheduled Masters Of Science Fiction in the Saturday 10pm death slot last year.

Hey ABC, how about rerunning the first (shortened) season of Pushing Daisies before the fall? I'm asking for selfish reasons, cuz I got an HD TV this winter and would love to see it in all its colorful glory before the new season.

I'm not too keen on the twist surprise endings most are doing as they are often very obvious. The wedding episode was the worst. I don't think there is anyone who watched that episode who didn't see that ending coming after the first 5 minutes. The way the note was written was like a giant neon flashing sign saying "this isn't what it seems!". Knowing how the episode would end I watched to see if it made sense and guess what, it didn't. The red herrings were poorly done and the bride's reaction near the end (hiding in the confessional) did not fit with the "big reveal". Although the shot of her apartment was rather creepy and disturbing. A very poorly written episode that, with a few adjustments, could have worked (or at least worked better).

The zombie episode did cheat a bit but I think they did a good enough job explaining it at the end that I didn't feel too cheated. Plus it explained her very stupid behaviour throughout the episode.

I think Corky could'a been a better choice for the older kids role, and the younger one was just as bad.

"We aren't allowed to use Uncle Rory's truck"... even if our supposed father, who we just inferred isn't our actual father, is trying to eat us.
And, if the older one grew up on a ranch, how in the hell did he never learn how to load a gun with the right ammo?

Other than that, the episode was alright.

in the script, Drew and Scott made it plain that the younger son was mentally retarded, and the older son a bit unsure of himself, the whole Wendigo incident drawing him into manhood. I definitely think the younger boy was underplayed to the point, he could have seemed just dense and not actually posessing learning disabilities or whatever. But yes, he was written that way in the script, and I felt it more directly there.
Drew, my thoughts on the ep...

I posted this in the Outlander TB, but wanted to put it here, so you could see it.

First, this is easily the best episode of Fear Itself thus far. The only one that has images and ideas that stick with you. If I had not read your script, I would have accused you of pounding home the "uncle is the father" theme, but it was actually very subtle in the script.

As far as the directing, Fessenden get's some creepy shots there, the roving camera looking at all the trophy heads and the darkened interior of the cabin, the misty mountains, the scene of Grady climbing down in the barn, behind the boys. I love that dark exterior of the red barn. That barn set looked very similar, and was shot very similar to the barn in The Roost(a low budget flick that Fessenden helped produce I think, or at least had a small role in). All done well. Favorite shot was the one of Grady looking out the window at Eddie Bear after the mare's death.

Doug Jones is awesome! He delivers one of the great t.v. movie monsters. We were talking bout t.v. monsters, like Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, etc. and this one stands up there with Savini's creature from Inside the Closet, and the zuni doll and someof the Outer Limits better creatures.I hope this thing gets airplay again. It's a shame it's not more of a stand alone piece(meaning that it won't just be shown as a little short film, outside the F I series. I argue that this and Battleground from Nightmares and Dreamscapes should be set free to be shown seperately whenever they can. Catching stuff like this randomly, at Halloween would be a great treat. I can see kids seeing this and freaking over it in the same way we still recall the dark imagery of those old t.v. flicks.

Also, Mori, are you familiar with Alvin Schwartz, the author and illustrator of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. It was a series of books when I was growing up that told classic folk tales, ghost stories and urban legends, with Schwartz's macabre sketches. His people always had distorted heads, sunken eyes, skeleton grins. His collection was the first place I ever encountered a Wendigo story. But the thing that truly struck me is Doug Jones' Grady looks like a Schwartz sketch come to disturbing life. My wife even commented on the fact too. Was this at all intentional? Or is this just a great coincidence on my part? Anyways, if you don't know Schwartz, check the drawings. Cool.

All in all, I really liked it, and think it's the best of the three pieces you and Scott have done, but I think I liked your take on Wendigo as a specific demon who posesses the body more than what they did here. I did find the concept of the rage allowing the creature access, and the underlying feelings Grady had about his wife and Rowdy giving the wendigo purpose, and vice versa, very cool. But I truly missed that scene where the Wendigo recognizes Eddie Bear from his childhood. I also missed Eddie's attempt to exorcise the creature, but (and this is just my opinion) I think at the script level, you could have made this a bigger part of the story, and included more Rowdy(and not just Rowdy stew) in the conclusion. But those are more preferences on my part, then actual criticism.

How did you feel about the changes that were made Drew? Were you asked to make them, or were they made later?

Terrific work, and I hope to keep seeing good creepy stuff being churned out from the McWeeney/Swann collaboration.

Correction about Schwartz's illustrations..

Writing for an anthology format
by veritasses
Aug 1st, 2008
12:18:07 AM
series is pretty hard. Unlike in a regular TV series, you don’t have the luxury of starting out with richly defined characters or complex character relationships and back stories. Nor do you have a lot of time to develop these things in an hour. For this reason, the anthology format requires all the technical elements to be spot on. Everything needs to be tight. This usually means stripping the story down to the bare bones and only including the elements (characters, plot etc) that are absolutely essential to making the story work. Unfortunately, this in turn might mean that you end up telling the story that you can or should tell vs the story that you want to tell…. Story wise, I think there were some characters and story elements that didn’t quite work out because there wasn’t enough time to flesh it all out and give them the focus that they deserved. Taking the unnecessary stuff out would have allowed the essential protagonist(s) to be better defined. Also, a stronger ending would’ve left a better lasting impression. It was a good job though considering it was written in only a few days. There were a few places here and there that could’ve used some polish to work out some issues with character action/reaction logic. Other than the story, I thought Doug Jones was fantastic. That’s a tough role to pull off without it becoming corny. The part where he licks his wife’s arm was a tiny but great moment. Some questionable acting from some of the other actors though. And the lighting was awful… but I guess that’s TV.

Because I find that's always one of my biggest complaints about these anthologies. Doug jones was indeed fucking awesome and creepy but they always seem to have one marquis actor and then just surround them with people who aren't up to the task. They always seem to have some atmosphere problems, but I'm guess thats due more to time and budgetary constraints than anything else. Is there some kind of limit to who they cast or is it local to canada or something?

For the most part, I really liked this episode. The concept was creepy, and I liked how you guys played with the idea of rage and isolation within the family unit. There were a few one liners thrown out that took me away from the story, but for the most part I thought the dialogue was pretty good, even if the acting wasn't quite there.

That being said, I do think that the mentally challenged younger son was kind of shoehorned in, and the actor was fucking awful. I mean really fucking awful. I hope that kid never gets work again. The older son wasn't as bad, but not as good as any of the other actors.

Holy shit Doug Jones is creepy. Does anyone else think that he looks like an animatronic when he moves? And there were scenes where he was lying in bed where I was convinced that it was a wax sculpture. The make up people did a really great job.

In the end, I think it was a really good episode, definitely the best that Fear Itself has had (although that isn't saying a lot). Keep up the work Mori, Maybe this would have worked better as a feature, but for a standalone episode of an anthology television series, it's pretty good.

That's what he is meant to do... scare kids. If you get it right, Drew, hats off... but I have my doubts. He's just a monster of the week to you Hollywood writers (and I mean that as a compliment, dude). Does he have a black star in his forehead? Does he stand 12' tall? Is he a forewarning to death? This is right up there with the "Gentlemen" from Buffy. Does anyone else remember the desicated "vampire zombies" from Lifeforce? That Doug Jones could embody a make up that could only be done as an animatronic in the past is quite the achievement. He's one skinny muther.

And I also think it is the best of Drew & Scott's works on TV so far. Sometimes the restraints of network can work for you.
