Mean Creek is awesome and it is not calling Topher Grace a big star but saying the new venom will be a bigger star then grace (and hopefully much less of a shit eating douche nozzle) What's all this about a venom movie bein in development BEFORE spiderman? Can someone clarify this for me cause it's making zero sense to me right about now (although most hollywood decisions do I suppose)

This just doesn't make me that excited.. I would have been if they didn't make Eddie Brock into an EMO douchebag at the end of SM3 with that horrible forced plot line. Shame, it's a cool character too.. Sony is a mess, seems they're going to way of FOX with how they handle the superhero properties they own.
Prior to SM3, I was excited for Venom.

I agree, Joseph Gordon Levitt is an amazing actor that makes awesome choices when it comes to movies he's been in (with the probable exception of GI JOE but I'll reserve judgement) I dont know that I see him as Eddie Brock though, I remember Brock as a body builder with blonde hair, are there other verions of Eddie Brock in the comics? In the ultimate version he is a lot more like parker right, so then it could work. Will spiderman be the bad guy? (he should be after spiderman 3...)

Remember when the comics industry was booming in the 90's and it quickly got wattered down to the point of unreadable books with shiny covers and art that looked a lot like someone at Image's art? I'm worried that the success of Dark Knight and Iron Man might cause the studio system to act the fool. I really want to be wrong on this one, though. I love comics and I love movies and there have been some great ones. But the shitty ones are in far greater number already... fuckity fuck fuck fuck.

I need some help on this one. Although Wolverine looks promising and the Director has got some street-cred. But so did Ang Lee and look what happened there. As long as Raimi stays as far away as possible from it, I will watch from a distance...... And Topher played Venom like that 70's character. "My spidey-sense is tingling IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?" I'm hoping this 'new direction' is done like Incredible Hulk, brief flashback then "here's where we are today". Then its a whole movie of him fighting Spiderman, but told entirely from the villians point of view. Never show Spidey's face, just merciless beatings. TAG YOUR IT!

Venom is a weak-ass character.
by ZeroCorpse
Jul 31st, 2008
12:37:08 AM
There's nothing about him that wasn't lifted from either ALIENS or TERMINATOR 2. He's a lame 2-dimensional character. He's essentially Spider-Man with a beard.

What's so "badass" about him anyway? That he says "We" instead of "I"? That he has a big jaw that drips goo? That he has big teeth? There's no depth to his story ("I hate Spider-Man because he indirectly caused me to lose my job, and YOU hate Spider-Man because he rejected your alien love, so let's join up and hate Spider-Man together! Grr!") and his powers are pretty unoriginal (Spider-Man's powers, but stronger and with black goo instead of web fluid. Plus morphing, cuz morphing was COOL in the 90s.)

Half the people that think he's the shit are kids who never read Spider-Man and only saw Venom on the animated show. If you had actually read comics in the 90s, and saw what a total fucking mess McFarlane and company made of Spider-Man back then, and had to suffer through the lame-ass Venom stories ("Oh dear. My evil twin is after me and he knows who I am, and who my girlfriend is, and where I live... Just like half my of other enemies... But this guy HATES me and his power blocks my Spider-sense, so I'm in slightly more danger than I would be if I fought the Green Goblin, but only until I find a bell tower, siren, sonic blaster, or particularly loud car alarm which will defeat him, because his weakness is-- of all things-- SOUND WAVES.)

Venom is a villain made to appeal to mouth-breathing wankers who only need to see a character dressed in black to think he's "cool" or "badass" or "dark" or "deep."

Venom is shit. He has always been shit. He only got slightly interesting lately in the Thunderbolts, as Mac Gargan (formerly the Scorpion), once Eddie Brock kicked the bucket.

And don't get me started on Cletus "the skinny red redneck version of Venom" Carnage. All I can say is I CHEERED when Sentry flew his lame ass into the sky and TORE HIM IN HALF like the weak, stupid fucking character he was. Good riddance. The fucking RINGER was more intimidating than Carnage.

I love Venom as a Spider-man villain but take him away from the ol' web-slinger and you'll get shitty stories much like the craptastic limited series Marvel published in the '90s. Hollywood had they're chance to do Venom right and blew it (and I still blame Raimi's disinterest in the character for that little debacle), and no more talk of reboot/rehash/re imagining/retardation bullshit please! ...with that debaccle that was Spiderman 3. I thought the first Spidey was overrated and was blown away by its sequel. What happened? I just hope the same pattern doesn't follow Nolan's Batman universe. I personally think he should create a new villian for Batman, not a comic book carry-over. Nolan actually has quite a bit of slack now, fans would accept anything at this point. Not to say fans will tolerate a inferior the final product, but talkbacks and buzz will yield considerable maneuver room for Nolan and company in the preproducition stages. A serial killer would be interesting. A terrorist cell ala al quaida, maybe? The latter may sound silly, but I really don't want to see another "guy in costume" villian. We believed the Joker, because he was a copycat in many respects to Batman, except he was on the other side of the moral spectrum. I don't want to see Gordon saying things like "we have a new villain who broke into the museum Batman. He calls himself Mr. Freeze. Good luck" Bleh!

Venom, no less-- one of the more uninteresting villains in recent memory. He's all flash and very little substance... The money motive from the movie execs is clearly at play here. SM3 made a ton of money, so why not a Venom spinoff? Heck, it'll be cheaper than a real Spider-Man movie. Prediction: "Venom" will be a short-lived box office hit, then word-of-mouth will spread that this is the most uninspired idea for a movie this side of "Ghost Rider."

It had the best action scenes...come on are you really gonna say the small Goblin battles, the Doc Ock L-train battle (as cool as it was) and the wayyyy truncated final battle of Spider-man 2 were better than the awesome costume-less Spidey vs. Goblin battle (TWANG goes the webline clothsline!), Sandman battles in streets and subways, Pete vs. Harry all out super-strength brawl and the way best final battle of the 3 films??

It also had the 2nd best emotion...Spidey 2 was a little better there b/c angst and suffering just plays better...but to me Spidey 3 had the most "dude, he has fallen so far" moment that was heartbreaking when he hit MJ.

And seriously, Peter is completely NOT emo in Spidey 3!!! What?? A guy brushes his hair down over his forehead and that makes him emo??? Everything else he was doing while symbioted was NOT emo...it was just amplifying his already geek personality....all the reactions he got were of ridicule and disgust...which was exactly what was intended! It was TOTALLy like that in the comics!! And was the jazz dance REALLY worse than fracking "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head" and that god-awful freeze-frame of Peter's goofy smile?

Though the Raimi films are light on Spidey's cracking wise 3 has Spidey cracking the most...acting cocky as he often did in the comics before everything hit the wall.

Was Venom rushed? Yeah...the film is not without its flaws but still we got Venom and he looked DEAD-ON like the comic version...which was light years ahead of anything we thought we would would get 10 years ago when a Spider-man film was a distant dream. He worked great...just wasn't in it enough with enough time to develop...shoulda been saved for 4....which I DO hope we get a Raimi 4 b/c in my opinion (not saying this is fact guys) in my opinion the Spidey films keep getting better and I'd love another from this team.

Don't get me wrong...I LOVE Spidey 1 and 2 more than most movies, but I really just DONT GET the Spidey 3 hate.

Ah, frack it, I'm going to bed.

I started reading comics right around when Venom was becoming popular, but after all the black costume stuff was over and done with. Anyway, I once got my hands on a comic book with the black costume. Kraven the Hunter had kidnapped Black costume Spider-Man, thrown him into a caged deathmatch with the Man-Rat, and then gone off to blow his brains out with a shotgun before even seeing who won. I thought that was a sort of cool issue of Spider-Man.

Hollywood will translate the comics in proper fashion, and to all Venom naysayers I think I'd all the more love to see this movie come to fruition and do a bang-up job just to shut you up. Besides, if it fails we all have a decade or two to wait for the eventual remakes of this era. Just keep crankin' them out I say... and if you ask me their newfound light in emulating IM and TDK's direction/execution is nothing but a GOOD thing.

03:33:47 AM
means Venom survived the explosion at the end of spidey 3? does it also mean that he wont appear in spidey 4? because that would make no sense. i mean, his origin has been done... and venom without spider-man doesnt really work for me. i still say there should have been no venom in part 3. the scene in the church should have been the end of the movie. the church scene should be AFTER harry dies, accidently killed by Peter. THEN the sandman tells peter his uncle was an accident as well. peter, in the black suit.. having just killed his best friend by mistake while trying to kill the sandman, is overcome by grief... and the realization that there is a huge grey area between wrong and right, THEN he goes to the church. there would be no MJ kidnapping, its so overdone. brock becoming venom should have been the last thing we saw. and when the credits rolled.... there would have been complete chaos in the theater. everyone would be hyped up about the next one. not dreading it. i want a 30 minute shorter cut. hell, give me the movie and a good editing software and let me recut it.
and yes...
by GavinVanDraven
Jul 31st, 2008
03:39:14 AM
harry would forgive peter, peter would forgive old sandy.... Peter realizes "its the suit", and goes to ring the bells. and MJ is nowhere near them in the scene. last time we saw her... she got smacked in the jaw.so that means at the start of part 4 peter would have to try and win her back, and all of the sudden she has a mysterious stalker... who wants to eat her brains.

i dont usually flat out hate a movie, but spiderman 3 got me to that level of rage. and i loved the first 2. If 3 had just been Sandman and Harry, a 4th spidey would have been a brilliant way to do the venom storyline. Venom needs room to tell the story, and it also needs a director that wanted to do the character. Raimi is old skool spidey.... he's Lee and Ditko... Venom doesnt belong in that universe. a venom movie would be about as the elektra movie was, so shit then. GIVE THE RIGHTS BACK TO MARVEL!

Back when the whole "bad ass" "extreme" characters we're popular like Wolverine, Punisher, Spawn, and Lobo (who was actually a parody of these types but I don't think the fans got the joke.) Very few of these characters (with probably the exception of Wolverine) we're terribly deep and the genre like all dumb trends eventually subsided. I'm not entirely sure what audience this is for to be frank.

Spider-man 3 sucked and now suddenly everyone hates Venom. There wasn't this much hate for him before Spidey 3 came out. Could it be that Raimi didn't understand the character and so fucked up his movie incarnation? I think so. He didn't even refer to himself as "we". There's no I in Venom, folks. Someone make a good Venom movie.

I think raimi acted childishly; making a movie that killed off the franchise, but kept sony happy enough that they stayed off his back.

The symbiote will latch onto someone, be all evil and murderous at first, then suddenly the host will slowly start to take over and see himself as a protector of the innocent, he'll fight some villain that's even more disturbing than he is, then at the end he'll decide the symbiote is too much to handle, he'll cast it off, then the last shot will be of someone else finding it and it latching on to them, leaving it open for sequels. Spla-dow...how ya like me now.

All Venom ever had going for him was a cool visual, and even that's over-rated. He's a profoundly uninteresting character. First there was Venom, then Carnage, then pink, yellow and orange venoms (really! http://tinyurl.com/57g4r) then a whole planet of symbiotes. Venom is for adolescents.

I think when they actually get around to writing it in a couple of years, after the suckage of Terminator Salvation and maybe a couple of circus or carnie centered movies by Nolan, they'll use Harvey, their ace in the hole. Though they clearly meant for a 3 movie arc with Joker as the final-battle villain, they know plenty of pecker necks speculated that Harvey wasn't dead, and I think they re-edited Harvey's end after Ledger's death to leave that window open. They won't need a new villain.

Comic book movies are headed in a perilous direction. This Venom shit is the clearest indicator I've seen. After a sub-par Hulk reboot that was really more nostalgia than substance, and a shitty Spider Man 3, it's clear to see that it's going downhill and will eventually experience a crash in viewer interest.

The whole "real world" approach of everyone but Bats is really fucking stupid. No offense to Ledger, but he wasn't that fucking great either. The problem I had with SM3 isn't that it lacked fighting; it was all the sappy stuff you mentioned, plus Venom felt shoehorned in. Venom has never proven himself to be deserving of his own comic. He was always an anti spider Man more than a original character. There was some interesting stuff about Brocks faith being tested after getting cancer but beyond that Venom is just a bland character. Spidey 3 proved this. sony will not make money off of Venom unless they go all horror on the character and have him doing the things The Punisher wouldnt do or have track down Carnage/Cassidy. Beyond that, meh.

find a way to a adapt Warren Ellis' run on Thunderbolts, now. One of the best, most intricate, psychologically complex, kick-ass comic about villains out there right now, and non-Eddie Brock Venom is a major character. Of course, you'd have to work around the whole Civil War set up, but this would be awesome!!!

Dogmatic, I'm with you. I don't get the hate for SM3 either. Besides the train scene, I didn't get what was so great about SM2, as it was essentially SM1 with a different villain. SM3 did have great action sequences, funny stuff (say what you want about the 'dance' scenes, but a lot of that stuff felt like a love letter to the Silver Age Spidey), and a movie that actually showed some character development and was actually about something. Going back to the initial idea of Uncle Ben's death was a good one (and Church's performance as Sandman was excellent), and the themes of redemption and forgiveness were a nice departure from the whole father figure villain thing.

It's giving a lot of very lame villains a good remaking, so they're not as lame as they once were. Mac Gargan's Venom is at least a little more intimidating than Brock's, because Gargan knows he's barely in control and might EAT SOMEONE, and he's freaked out that he kinda-sorta likes it. He can't cut loose because of the nanobots and because the Green fucking Goblin would kick his ass (We've seen Norman go ballistic a few times now. He's seriously fucked up, and seriously dangerous even without his gadgets).

I like that the recent artwork makes Norman look a little like Tommy Lee Jones, too. Even Nuclear Man is interesting in Thunderbolts. They all fucking hate each other, but have to play nice-- It's good writing for a lot of mid-tier characters that would have lingered in limbo otherwise.

Todd McFarlane represents everything that was shitty about comics in the 90's. I started reading comics in the early eighties, and gathered a lot of the best 70's stuff over the course of my comic fandom. I gave it up around the same time I started noticing girls, around the same time that McFarlane was laying his filthy hands on my beloved industry.

First, he ruined Spiderman. For some reason, kids actually liked his ridiculous scratchy over-detailed crap drawings, inventing muscles and drawing every body/face exactly the same, male and female, no style but lots of it, no care given to actual draftmanship, perspective, anatomy, or any of the things illustrators have taken for granted as the basis of what makes even comic art 'good'. Then the suits decided to give him some power of his own, because the slackjaws were buying, and he invented one of the most disgusting, derivative, and stupid characters ever seen in comics- Spawn. Spawn is just...gross. He's suburban angst. He's Insane Clown Posse. He's trash.

McFarlane is a talented businessman, though, I'll give you that. He took his 'revenge of the nerd' ambition and became a millionaire by turning the comics industry into his own personal running toy commercial, just like saturday morning cartoons. I guess in a way it's a good thing that McFarlane was the harbinger of doom for mainstream comics in the 90's, it prompted underground comics to fill the gap, and opened opportunities for young artists who had to simply be better than McFarlane (not a difficult task, apparently) to make a name for themselves.

I still miss the comics of old though, Claremont, Byrne, George Perez, Art Adams, Alan Davis, John Romita, John Romita Jr., Walt Simonson, Barry Windsor-Smith,... See, I may not have talent, but at least I can recognize it. You? Not so much.

I never thought I'd get tired of the concept but all of a sudden I'm started to feel more than a little depressed by this glut of superhero movies. Some have been great but its killing the variety of films out there. And Venom is just an idea that should not be entertained anymore. sequels or spinoffs. Raimi fucked up Venom. Yeah, he doesn't like the character. But he has enough pull that he could have done something and possibly-POSSIBLY MIND YOU-to save Spidey 3 from ending up a Uwe Boll tribute film. I agree with the idea of having a Venom badass; The Leathal Protectr! I would love to see a superhero movie where murder is his style of "justice" while scaring the shit out of every one. Vampire$ might have been mediocre (ok, it kinda did suck a lot even though Woods is quite hilarious throughout)...but it is true that after Mouth, JC hasn't done shit worth shit. That fucking Ice Cube ghosts on mars movie was the fucking ridiculous and actually made me question the man's talent (for about 5 minutes until I put in Big Trouble in Little China and had a blast yet again! {that movie never gets old}).

As for Venom, I agree with the posters above who said the church scene should have been the epilogue of Spidey3 and then 4 could have had Venom. But Venom hate aside...I'd really really like to see the Lizard for Lee's sake! From the very first one, Dylan Baker has been putting in the work (excellent work in fact, even if only tiny bits and pieces) and he deserves his day in the Spidey sun. Plus, of the very few Spidey comics I've read, Lizard was always one of the kewler villains and had a good origin story. Give us Lizard...then maybe Kraven and then come back to Venom. Spidey 3 wasn't absolute shit but it was quite crappy in parts and Venom is poorly realized. Carnage certainly looks interesting but if you guys say he sucks...well then I'm sure we'll be seeing him as the villain in the new Venom movie!

I'm not advocating a spin off here at all, simply because I don't see why it would be necessary. But wouldn't Sandman be a much more logical character to follow, rather than Venom? For one, he's still alive and on the run, you don't have to come up with some non-comic based story where the symbiote ends up on someone else. Besides, Sandman is just a much more interesting character. He's a run of the mill super villain in the classical sense (more interested in robbing banks than doing dastardly deeds), yet he's conflicted and sometimes does the hero thing (he's been back and forth in the comics several times, including a stint on the Avengers.) Plus, Sandman's powers just offer all sorts of visual fun that Venom won't. Venom's just a monsterous version of Spider-Man. We've seen everything he can do onscreen from Spidey already...aside from biting heads off.

they could make Venom a really gritty movie and it would have an awesome intro/backstory with Gargan. Carnage is the obvious villain. And the FF movies sucked because of Tim Story. They need to let someone else take over on that series. The skrulls would be an excellent way to go for a third film.

I know I'm way late on this response so maybe it won't even get read but...

Sidepocket I was not comparing Spidey 3 to Dark Knight. I recognize Dark Knight is superior filmaking...I saw it 3 times already...but the greatness of Dark Knight does not make Spidey 3 suck! It stands still as my favorite Spidey movie and now 2nd favorite superhero movie tied with Iron Man with Dark Knight holding #1 now. Though I hope Watchmen smashes all of them to take #1!!!!

Brainfart, I wasn't saying the "Raindrops keep falling on my head" didnt work. I liked it fine....I was just saying TO ME it came off far goofier than the jazz dance which I felt totally fit the film in that moment.

J. Michael Stracinszky did not ruin spiderman. If you take away the strange spidergod story the characters were very well written.A certain minority of gay fanboys believed he did a bad job cause he didn't write about the normal villain vs hero Marvel crap, but unlike the films Peter Parker and Mary Jane WERE as we know and love them and Spiderman's foes were some of the most interesting in a long long time...he actually addresed the fact that there ARE very human bad guys in New York and they don't wear bloody tights or have world domination on their minds...
