The best example is when they unceremoniously elbowed kd lang out of the way for Sheryl Crow; the lang song was a masterpeice and Crow's was Godawful. We hope that this one will be good, but one could only speculate what could have been if Amy Winehouse hadn't have been so fucked up that she was incapable of doing the theme...

What about Matt Monroe "from Russia with love" the first true bond song...ya missed that one...also to answer a question...yes Shirley Bassey did get asked to sing a third bond song...she recorded "kiss kiss bang bang" for "Thunderball" but it was dropped because the producers wanted a song with the movies title...Shirley did record a version but they went with tom Jones...there is a bar in "from Russia with love" called "the kiss kiss club" which was put in the movie to try and link it to the Bassey song.

She's not doing the nighclub circuit, she's practically royalty here in Wales (come to think of it, as she's now a Dame I guess she is literally kind of royalty). Still sings the national anthem at international rugby matches from time to time and she did a cover of Pink's Get This Party Started or whatever recently in a big bombastic Bond type style which seems to get some airplay and was on a TV ad. I mean, it's not something you'd buy but she does still seem to have the voice so I guess she could handle a Bond track easily enough.

View to a Kill-Best Bond Song
by Samuel Fulmer
Jul 30th, 2008
08:01:03 AM
That movie sucked, but the song by Duran Duran gets my vote for the best in a Bond film. Other good ones: Goldfinger, You Only Live Twice, On Her Majesty's Secret Service (not the song, but the theme by John Barry played over the opening credits), Live and Let Die, and Goldeneye. The worst has to be Die Another Day. The Man With the Golden Gun is a terrible song, but it does have some schlock value.

Well not personally, but I hate her music. I think it has to do with the fact that everytime I go to a restaurant they play some crap where she sings "Every thing's going to be all right, oh, oh, oh blech." It's that safe sort of crap music that they'll even play at a funeral.

I wanted them to do away with the opening pop song when they rebooted the franchise, but once again no one listened to me. Granted, I like the White Stripes and all and Alicia Keys is slightly more talented then other vapid pop singers, but I guarantee their song will have to conform to some sort of spy sound.

By the way, Portishead just released a new album so it may not be 1997 but why let that get in the way of exposing an underrated band. Of course, they never go down the path less traveled for songwriters.

by Daniel Craig? The last Bond movie was the best Bond film since Sean Connery. In fact, it was better than a lot of early Bond films (maybe it's not as good as Dr. No or From Russia With Love, in my opinion the best of the bunch, but the rest is debatable). Casino Royale was hands down the best action film in a long, long time. Hell, it was even better than the Bourne movies. Thank God the studios didn't listen to those bitches whining about Bond's hair color.

And I'm one of them. I'm not saying Casino Royale was a terrible movie, but it was a forgettable and bland mishmash of the current action-espionage movie landscape, not a distinct movie with its own personality like a real James Bond movie. Craig's Bond will continue to deliver bland movies with some cute stunts that are fine to watch once and that you won't recognize in a few years. There's nothing wrong with creating disposable entertainment, but I'm not going to acting like these films are in any way significant or even distinct.

Jul 30th, 2008
01:55:55 PM
In fact, what you just described reminded me of the rote, dying franchise that Bond was ever since Connery left. I like Connery's movies a lot but, with the exception of the first two Brosnan films, I never really liked the Bond franchise after Connery left. He became a less and less interesting character. Finally, Casino made Bond flesh and blood again, and the scene in Venice was a bit of genius. The structure of that film is awfully brave for an action movie.

Ravenlord, Chris Cornell hasn't done anything of significance since Soundgarden. Granted, I fucking love Soundgarden, but all of the shit he's done since then has called into question his artistic integrity. These days Jack White is ten times what Cornell is. Remember, Cornell is recording his next album with Timbaland. If that isn't a pathetic attempt at pop culture relevance I don't know what is.

Hard to tell... It's a three-way tie between LIVE AND LET DIE, A VIEW TO A KILL, and NOBODY DOES IT BETTER (THE SPY WHO LOVED ME). As much as I love A-ha!, the version on the album STAY ON THESE ROADS kicks all sorts of ass, but the opening credits version is kinda lame with all the orchestration, which is what usually fucks it all up. When you're getting a band that does 80's synth-pop, you should NOT have a big orchestra.

I honestly don't know why they aren't calling these BOURNE films, because the reboot/retcon proves that they are so obviously inspired by the BOURNE films, and for good reason. Does anyone think that the trailers for QUANTUM OF SOLACE and THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM look and sound kinda similar? "Find Bond!" "Find Bourne!" And here comes the big cool motorcycle jump! As much as I loved CASINO ROYALE, you could just smell the Bourne.
