Does anyone ask hard questions at these things?
by OBSD
Jul 29th, 2008
09:59:20 AM
I haven't watched this yet (at work, no video), but it seems to me that these panels are all about the "fans" kissing these people's asses. Does anyone ask these people hard (or even remotely challenging) questions at these panels? Like "How come we have to wait a whole year for the second half of the series? Don't you think that there will be a certain amount of fan dropoff because of that?" That's a pretty good one to start with. And no falling back on "the writer's strike" excuse because we all knew that was Sci-Fi's plan a year ago. If I were there I'd ask 3 question (at least) on 3 panels, the first would be the above one. The second would be to Sam Raimi: "Why on God's green earth did Spider-Man 3 suck so bad?" And the third would be to Lion's Gate vis a vie The Punisher: "Neu-Metal? Really? You are aware that this isn't 1998 anymore, right?" There's a whole bunch more, but it would be nice if these panels weren't the chocolate starfish smooch-a-thons that they seem to be. Just because I get to watch a couple of minutes of sneak-a-peak footage of a movie doesn't mean that these people get to catch a break if they're not doing right by the fans, does it?
Um, it's not the ENTIRE panel...

As has been pointed out by others, the clips have been removed. THAT's what people want to see. Still, a fun panel with some "read between the lines" secrets lightly addressed. We learn that Six and Baltar get involved in a shoot-out at the end and that Baltar finds some kind of redemption and Starbuck finds peace. And yeah, Sackhoff looked very hot and girly on the panel. Nice change of pace.

Maybe the reason they didn't ask the "hard questions" is, I dunno, because it wasn't Hardball, it was ComicCon, and these folks didn't have to show up. It's meant to be a chance for fans to see the stars / creators, etc., not a chance to beat up on folks.

But isn't that the problem with Fanboy journalism? (should those two words even be put together? I'm not sure. But isn't that what this site does?) Everbody's either so stunned that they even get to ask a question to these famous people that they can't say anything ecxept for "You rock, dude!" or they're so afraid that they won't be asked to one of these things again that they shoot softball questions. I'm not saying that if you had an interview with Lucas, you should scream "You raped my childhood!" What's that going to prove, except for that the interviewer is a douche. But one can ask questions that make the subject think about the product that they're making and come up with a reasonable defense for it. Quint had the head of Disney and couldn't get the balls to ask him "Look at these original Bolt designs and now look at the CGI version. Now honestly , do you really think the CGI looks better?"
"Hard" Questions

Call me crazy, but maybe the ComicCon attendees are intelligent enough to realize that the actors and producers don't have a say in how a network schedules their show, so there is no point in being a douche about the subject.

So somebody couldn't ask something like "I know you have nothing to do with this, but have the honchos at Sci-fi ever explain their reasoning behind splitting the last season over two years and could you explain that reason to us?" First, do you really think that sounds like a douchebag question? Because I think it sounds like a pretty reasonable question. Second, do you think the people in that hall wouldn't erupt with applause if that question was asked? And if not, why not?

"Reasongable" Questions
by TheEleventhDoctor
Jul 29th, 2008
01:19:29 PM
No, I don't believe those are reasonable questions. Fans shouldn't put creators of their favorite shows into a position where they may have to make a public statement that could be detrimental to them. You know full well that you're not going to get a straight answer to a question like that, you're going to get some diplomatic bullshit answer, so why waste the time going there in the first place?

by OBSD
Jul 29th, 2008

For all of the reasons you just stated. Because it will force them to give an answer, no matter how diplomatic. Because, somebody from the network is watching and maybe, just maybe, they will actually listen to what the fans have to say. Because everybody working on that show is beholden to the studio, but the studio is ultimately beholden to the fans, and maybe they'll realize that. And finally, because somebody has to.
And also...

Jul 29th, 2008
01:35:54 PM
What's unreasonable about wanting somebody to explain a studio's motives? Not just about BSG, but about the neu-metal in Punisher or any creative decision that's purely motivated by thoughtless greed? We know it's thoughtless greed, they know it's thoughtless greed, so what's the harm in them telling us it's thoughtless greed? What, is it going to tear open the illusion that the studios are all about creating and nurturing artists and giving them free reign for their vision? Everybody knows that's not true, so why not just admit it? If BSG fans have stuck around this long, they'll stick around for "yeah, we just wanted to charge you double for the DVD of the last season of our show., Sorry." I'd invite some honesty like that at this point.
Also, also...

Jul 29th, 2008
01:44:26 PM
Some guy asking pointed questions will inspire others to do the same and within a few years, Comicon would become a very different place. The studios would end up leaving and starting their own thing that was more "friendly". Or maybe, just maybe when a studio showd some footage of a movie that was crap, and the audience was hanest and said "hey, this is crap." Maybe that would give the studio pause and say "let's re-thi nk this". But it'll never happen like that. I'd bet all my money on the studios just abandoning Comic Con if that were to happen than face their own faults.

Too many uncomfortable questions puts an end to fan interaction. There are plenty of series that manage just fine, for years, without conventions and fan festivals. Understand this: Creators invent the product. Studios pay to produce the product. Fans consume the product. The end. Studios don't care why we consume the product, they just care that we do. We can Monday morning quarterback all day long and we can make the creators feel bad for choices that aren't theirs in first place, but to what end? Fan pressure? What a crock. The show is in its final season, by the choice of its creators. It's not like we would have any affect on what remains of the final season at this stage anyway. Sit back and enjoy the ride or shut the fuck and move on. Those are the only real options you've got left.
Interaction?!
by OBSD
Jul 29th, 2008
02:39:54 PM
An hour of "You rock, dude!" is not interaction, it's a fucking circle-jerk. And that's my whole fucking point. Do you people really want to pay hundreds of dollard to go jerk off the studios? If you're going to pay the money, why not use it to push their (considerible) weight around? This is all almost free publicity for the studios if we do nothing, but if people actually fucking said something at these things, maybe we could change something. As it stands, the panels at Comic Con are just places where you spend hundreds of dollars to pretend you're the host of The Chris Farley Show. "Remember the time you were on the clip of that show we just saw? That was awesome."

by TheEleventhDoctor
Jul 29th, 2008

ComicCon is a promotional stop, nothing more. The creators get the chance to smile at the fans, humor them for an hour and go on with their lives. Guess what happens if you come at them like fucking Woodwards and Bernstein. They stop coming. The TV show or movie will still do just fine with or without ComicCon. All you would do is look like a prick to others in attendance who DO get that their approval is fucking meaningless to the evil dark lords of the studio, without whom the existence of said project wouldn't be possible in the first place and earn you their derision in the meantime. People who go to conventions understand that making things difficult for guests, who really didn't need to take time out of their lives for the bullshit in the first place, only means one thing: They won't see the guest come back next year. I've been a guest of conventions before. Hell, I was a panelist with Harry himself ten years ago or so. I know how this shit works, and you are barking up the wrong fucking tree.

Just because nobody has ever had the balls to ask a question that didn't start with "why are you so awesome?" Doesn't mean that nobody should try. Why the fuck not? Upset the applecart. Who gives a shit? Oooh, I'm a-scared that Sony won't have a panel next year if I asked a real question. Really? So let me get this straight. The whole reason you jerk off the studios is so they won't be mad so you can jerk them off next year and they won't be mad so you can jerk them off the next year... and on and on into infinity? Sounds boring, dude. Why the fuck not ask a pointed or hard question, or (gasp) actually give your opinion on something? Is it going to change the world? No. But it's gotta be a whole lot less boring than questions like: "you know you're awesome, right?"

by TheEleventhDoctor
Jul 29th, 2008
03:56:48 PM
I agree with you to a point. However, holding the creators responsible for a studio decision is pretty asinine, wouldn't you agree? Why would you ask them something that they had nothing to do with and run the risk of putting the creator in a bad situation, publicly. Just so the word of your displeasure will get back to the studio? I have a newsflash for you, bub. The studio doesn't give a shit about your opinion. They don't care if you like waiting until next summer to see the new Star Trek movie instead of this Christmas or if you approve of splitting a season in two and running it over two calendar years. The studios could give a fuck less what you think, they're not asking for your permission nor are they going to seek your forgiveness when they, in your opinion, make a wrong choice. Nor. Will. They. EVER. So, with that in mind, what would one possibly hope to accomplish by turning a fan gathering, which the creators have no obligation to appear at whatsoever, into a bitch and moan fest?

I know they don't give a shit about me. And I do see your points. If they don't listen, then why be an asshole? You're just ruining it for everyone else? I totally get that. I've never been to one of these things ever, so I can't say how I'd act or react, but I would hope if say, I was to see the Punisher clip that was filled with Neu-Metal I would be able to ask "Are you really going to fill the whole movie with Neu-metal?" If there was a Marvel Studios panel, I would ask, point blank "I heard that there were 70 minutes cut from the Hulk, are you going to put them back in on the DVD?" Things like that. They won't change the world, but I may actually get an answer that doesn't beat around the bush.

She makes me glad to be alive as a man who loves women!! We are beyond spoiled on this show - Tricia Helfer, Grace Park, just about every female cast member, we're not worthy! That aside, watching the panel it really hit home how great they all are as an ensemble cast and how sad it's gonna be when it's all over. And frak me if Tricia didn't just reveal that both her and James Callis are there at the end (the end of production, at least) shooting guns! It would be amazing if that was somehow the last scene - Six and Baltar. Maybe the in-head incarnations. The first half of season 4 was missing a key ingredient, the many great scenes between James Callis and Tricia Helfer. I hope they are together a lot more in the second half as they are one of the best onscreen partnerships EVER!

Bacci40, they DID send a EUREKA contingent to the Con...
by Big Dumb Ape

03:41:08 AM
Bacci40, you asked: "And did anyone watch EUREKA? Wonder how the first epi was. Also wonder why SciFi didn't send a EUREKA contingent down to the con."

Actually, they did. The panel had Colin Ferguson, Salli Richardson and Joe Morton, as well as creator Jamie Paglia. If you click on the link that Herc gave, it takes you to a SciFi Channel page that not only has the video for the GALACTICA con panel, but the EUREKA one as well.

And the premiere episode tonight was basically okay. Personally, I don't like this whole storyline that they're apparently continuing with Stark and Allison getting back together -- it just seems to undercut everything they spent two seasons building up between her and Carter for no reason at all. Not to mention, the opener seems to indicate Carter is completely single since we seem him whining over losing her, so I guess the opposing subplot that paired him off at the end of last season with the town's Dry Cleaning Lady has likewise just disappeared off the radar scope since she was nowhere to be seen.

Lets get beyond the fact that Mr Smith should in no way ever be allowed anywhere near a camera - he has no idea how to move it. As a former longtime Kevin Smith apologist, Clerks 2 was almost embarrassing to watch. He has not progressed one iota as a filmmaker or writer. What seemed fresh and funny in 1994 now seems, well, 14 years dated. And, quite frankly, a Tijuana Donkey show that is awesome and freak-nasty at the age of 22 seems ... kinda pathetic to someone reaching 40. My best analogy - he's becoming the late 30's guy hanging out at the college bar, the guy at the club hitting on girls 20 years younger than him without the benefits of selling large amounts of illegal pharmaceuticals. He needs to develop, to cut the umbilical cord still tying him to that damn convenience store. Think the guy is outrageously funny, great caustic wit ... but, man, he needs to develop. And I say that wid wots and wots of woove.

...he can kinda see it too. Long and boring story short: on another dorky nerd site similar to this one (but much more civil and comic-centric) I threw Bamber's name out there as part of my dream Avengers cast.

Some other dork liked my geek idea, and was a big enough of a BSG nerd to go to a convention where he met Bamber in person while he was doing table signings. He asked him what he thought of the idea and apparently Bamber said it sounded like a good gig, and would definitely be up for it, given that the Hollywood big wigs would actually give him a shot. Isn't that totally cool? Yea, not really...

Glad to hear...
