Seriously why bother with continuity at all? The producers have killed the cash cow. First they have got an OC Doomsday with vidal Sassoon hair, now they are maessing up continuity by bringing in the Legion too late.Legion should have been second or third season. And clark would have completed his "training" with Jor El befire starting working full time at the planet. so, its all just a big mess.

I've said all along they should have done the Legion--though I think it's way too late now and it should have been a whole season arc, but how the hell can anyone care about this show when it translates the comics into such lame incarnations? Doomsday is a fucking bar tender!!!?!! And Clark is so absurd after this long. He's the only one at the farm, he never did disappear so he can fake his education later, and he's shown zero ability to be a reporter or frankly to have a direction in life. This show only works if you're a kid who doesn't know any other version of Superman.

Just put it to rest, WB. Stick a fork in it: SMALLVILLE is done. And here's how you should do it... Write 4 new episodes which are basically season finales: for the end of season 4, end of season 5, season 6, and season 7. (Even one if there's a season 8 - I lost the will to live around season 5). Each finale has the same plot: it is the wrap-up last episode that ends SMALLVILLE at the end of whatever season it is desgined for. The idea is that you then air them consecutively over several days, so those who thought SMALLVILLE should have ended at the end of S4, watch the first show. Those who think it should have ended at the end of S5, watch the second. Those completist freaks who just want to watch a genuinely innovative idea for a show that should have died years ago, should watch them all. Each season "finale" should be written by a writer who was locked in a hotel with the previous two seasons to the finale they are writing for a month - with NOTHING ELSE TO WATCH. The finales should pay very close attention to the season they are ending, and should tie up EVERY loose thread. And each one should end with Supes revealing his powers to Lana by flying with her over Smallville (like the graphic novel SUPERMAN FOR ALL SEASONS), then revealing he's leaving for Metropolis, and has a job at the Planet. He tells the Kreuk how much he loves her, and has to go. This can be revamped for the endings to the finales set AFTER Lana discovers his powers. Works for me, anyhoo. Who's with me?

That is probably the best idea I have ever heard (and just about the only thing that could ever make me watch Smallville again). One problem...although I (for some strange reason) watched through the end of Season 4, I hated it--Season 3 was, to me, clearly the last truly good season of the show. But it already ended with such a wonderful cliffhanger! I guess my perfect last episode would be a GOOD first episode of season 4, which also concludes the series. But, seriously, I stopped watching after Season 4, but I have a friend who still watches every week, and sometimes he'll tell me what's going on on the show, and HOLY SHIT. I always just shake my head in disbelief and suspect that he's putting me on a little. Now that I don't watch it anymore, I kind of hope the show keeps on going for a long time, just for the entertainment value of checking up on it every now and then to see how insane and stupid it can get (my guess is that the answer to this question is contained in how long Tom Welling wants to keep pulling a paycheck).

SamusMaXximus has it right - I'd have finished at the end of Season 4, if only because the death of Jonathan Kent was the perfect place to end the series, and have Clark find the Fortress, the crystal etc, and become SuperMAn - rather than remain SuperBOY, which is what the series originally was about. Welling's getting just a bit long in the tooth to carry on in what is, essentially, what Zero says above - "Dawson's Creek with superpowers". I personally think the series peaked with the episode "Shattered" in season 3 - that was far and away the most moving episode they ever did, and it was Lex's glory, not Clark's. Rosenbaum should have gotten an Emmy for that episode alone. And David Cloverfield provides the voice of reason: watch SUPERNATURAL. I do, and I think it's got exactly what SMALLVILLE used to have but seems to have lost: ENERGY! LOTS AND LOTS OF ENERGY! Oh, and Katie Cassidy. As much as I loves my Erica Durance, SUPERNATURAL has Katie Cassidy. I go to Hell just to tap that ass. Yes, indeedy.

I never got it, I never got why people rag on this show just because it doesn't follow the exact continuity of the comics. they always say nothing when I mention superman has not only the most botched and worst continuity out of any comic character ever, but he has about 7 canonical origins. 7!!! and Smallville has crafted their own continuity that i would prefer was in the comics. Byrne's reboot, post birthright, post infinite crisis can all suck a dick. At least some have sense to look past continiuty and enjoy it on it's own merits, the same type of peoplw who can enjoy Nolan's Batman without comaplining about Batman not wearing a cloth tights and Joker being perma white with perfectly dyed hair and lips.

I've watched every single episode. It's a habit i just can't break. Whoever said season 3 was the last truly good season is right. The show has had good stuff since, sometimes an episode will be so good i think "jesus, what happened, why can't it be like that every week?" but mostly it's a groan inducing borefest. and messi, i don't think people dislike smallville just because of the continuity, i think it has more to do with the poor writing and ridiculous storylines. pete ross returns after 4 years only to become mr. fantastic after eating kryptonite Stride gum? lex and lana get married, move in together, get pregnant only for lana to realize two minutes later that she hates lex and that he's killed their baby... or there wasn't a baby to begin with, i'm not even sure what happened there. the whole "traveler" business might have been cool in season two, three and maybe four, but this deep into the series it was just a lame attempt to tie the series together. by the end of the episodes i was piss drunk because i would take a shot every time someone said "traveler", which was like twice a sentence. this season had exactly one real good episode and that was "descent", but it was also the episode where the show's only great character left bites the dust, so i can't really love it. Season 8 is shaping up to be awful. but hey, sometimes the show surprises me, we'll see.

The name of the show doesn't pertain to the town of Smallville so much as to Clark (Kal-El) Kent himself. It was John Byrne who, in his run on Superman in the late 80s, established "Smallville" as a nickname Lois Lane uses for Clark. The series has included that. So no real need to change the name at this time - particularly if this turns out to be the last season of the series (oh, I hope so!).

The only 'Saving Grace' I see in the upcoming season is that Green Arrow is going to be a major player. Honestly, the best episodes in recent years is where he has been the focus. I agree this is probalby the last season, hopefully with Oliver FINALLY getting through to Clark about accepting his destiny. And I have said this before, last season needed to end with Clark at the Fortress and this season needed to pull the "One Year Later" ala Battlestar Galactica where Clark 'comes back' to reality and begins at the Daily Planet. There was the character of Clark but no double-identity, just a super-powered kid with a secret. There was the feisty reporter, Chloe, who was a stand-in for the Lois Lane character. And then there was Lex Luthor who, while being Clark's friend, would still do anything to control the power Clark had had he known he had it. It was Superman as we know him, but without Superman, set in high school. Superman 90201. Clark's Creek. Kal-El Hill. The CK. It's a Superman show, without the character of Superman, disguised as a Superboy show.

The casting is pretty great, except Lana. If they gave Clark a little more backbone and made Lex a young, self made genius, just starting up lexcorp, studying meteorites instead of the spoiled brat... stuff like that. Make characters likable and useful to the story on the long term. Also a few season long adversaries instead of the 22 secrets every character keeps from the others constantly. I'll wait for the reimagined version in a few decades.

The Legion should have been brought in a LONG time ago. But if you don't think the Legion can be done well, you need to watch the episode where they met Clark on "Superman: The Animated Series."

I've been watching this show since it first aired and reading these talkbacks for just as long and I have just this to say: QUIT FREAKING COMPLAINING! If you really hate the show that much and "just don't care any more" then why in holy smacking hades are you reading stories about it on this site? For all you continuity whores, this show has NEVER been about following any of the established Superman continuities. Find me one issue of a Superman or Superboy comic where Lana's parents are dead and she lives in a coffee shop. I dare you to locate a single issue showing a costume-less Clark duking it out with a meteor freak in the Smallville High parking lot. This show has always been its own reality, and has never even pretended to conform, so please, stop bitching with the same "eeh... he's been in Smallville too long... ehh.. he's never going to be a reporter now... ehhh... he shouldn't have met Lois already..." I mean, I'm a proud comic book nerd, but you folks are the ones giving us honest nerds a bad name. And for you hacks who claims absurd shit like "I could crap better scripts than the 4th season... ehh..." Try it. Seriously. Sit down and write a script for a 42 minute television show. One. That's all. I will wager my copy of Birthright that it will suck. If you can do it better than the professionals, please, change your zip code and get a job doing it, and then maybe you won't be taking up valuable bandwidth on here. If you really can't stand the show, CHANGE THE CHANNEL. You DO have free will, you know.

Yeah it can be cheezy at times. It's still better than alot of crap, and better than many if not most of the Scifi and Comic themed shows over the last 8 years...ok, Birds of Prey, Mutant X, Painkiller Jane, Witchblade and many others weren't really a balanced competition. Realistically though, it's a decent hour every week in an alternate reality of the DCU. And Rosenbaum's Lex is flat out the BEST live action Lex Luthor on film to this day. Hackman and Spacey were a joke comparitvely.
