40 seconds in before he discovers the zoom function, but loses the ability to aim?

Still, from what we can see of the footage, it does look sweet. I just hope the script is good. If there's one thing the Star Wars prequels have taught us, it's that pretty graphics don't make a good movie.

nobody's bitching about the change to those lightcycles or whatever they're called. considering how anal people tend to be here about any amount of change to a franchise they like, i'm seriously shocked. i wish i could be excited like everyone else, dont get me wrong a Tron movie made today could be pretty cool but the original was just always boring to me, i liked it as a kid due to "fancy effects" but when i saw it again in my early teens, i wasnt impressed. but either way if that little clip is indicative of the final product, could make for a cool movie. i can just hear tommy tallarico screaming like a school girl now.

I loved Tron, but I will agree that while the concepts, the execution, the effects, were all dazzling -- the script was pretty talky. I think that's why there isn't an uproar over them messing up perfect film. It's ripe for a continuation of the mythology and effects, and might even improve on the original.

Thats pretty cool and it gives the film hope that it could be good. But it must have a good story to be more than just some glossy CG effects, otherwise it would be nothing more than a big screen demo of a video game. It would be like sitting and watching another person play while you're itching for your turn.

I mean, we see basically nothing of his character in this clip. All we see is him coming out of meditation, walking over to "something", looking down with some sort of glare, then walking away in a sort of disinterested or disheartened manner.

I say he's not evil. Perhaps Clu didn't really de-rez, and has become evil, and Flynn has lost control of him, and that stare and then the walk-off was just another "holy shit, Clu, not again" kind of thing.

Could be.

Jeff Bridges seals the deal. Saw the original in the theater, and loved it -- I was 9, and it really had this ahead-of-its-time vibe. The story didn't quite gel into greatness, but I came out of the theater wanting one of those discs so damn bad. Sorry, but movies in the theater are a communal experience. Which is why they put LAUGH TRACKS on TV SHOWS, because the POINT is to laugh out loud during a comedy or FLINCH during a scary movie or GASP when you see a lightcycle appear.

Ask any filmmaker, and they will tell you they LIVE for those in-theater outbursts.

First of all... this was at Comic Con, so the creators WERE there. And how the audience reacts determines whether or not this baby gets made, so I'm GLAD they hooted.

But I think you are saying that people applaud at rock concerts or live theater because it is LIVE, whereas movies are not live, so why applaud at the end when no one is there to accept it? Is that what you mean?

I think they're releasing built-up energy and emotion that a great immersive experience has given them. Reading and DVD's are an introverted experience. Watching movies in the theater, with the lines and close seats, is an extroverted one. It's part of the shared the experience. You can hate it, but to move people to applause is a filmmaker's dream, whether they are there or not.

For event/nostalgia teasers, what the teaser actually shows isn't as important as getting that visceral fan giddiness. That's what I really like about these "bootleg" trailers from shows - you get to see that initial audience "wow" reaction. I hate it when they get taken down because they're often more exciting that seeing the full "high-quality" teaser without the group experience.

Forever and ever. Not TR2N. I am continuing the brave resistance I exhibited when writing about SEVEN (not Se7en) and INDEPENDENCE DAY (not ID4) on geek message boards. It's my own small effort to not let the terrorists win. Anyway...TRON 2 looks really great. I had an orgasm when he jumped and the LIGHTCYCLE appeared around him. Only...where was his ROD? (I mean the glowing stick, not his penis) Isn't there always a rod that you hold in the original, that becomes the cycle? Sorry, Harry. You bought into it. I was also "exactly the right age" -- and it bored my little brain to pieces. I saw it twice, just because I couldn't believe that the movie I thought was going to be so awesome was so ... dumb. And boring. And stupid. And slow-moving. Even the action sequences seemed to be filmed (to use a reference of that age) on Quaaludes. Now a sequel? I mean, it's one thing to take a great film and make a bad sequel. Happens all the time. It's another to take a bad film and decide to make a sequel. That's called Fanboy Hysteria. All the studios are doing it. Look at "The Incredible Hulk." In the end, it actually has done LESS well than the Ang Lee version! At some point, studios will finally realize that the fanboys are very vocal, very passionate ... and not very influential. Make good movies. Make original movies. Don't make sequels to bad movies.

Anyone who was in the "sweet-spot" age of 10-16 and saw "Tron" back in 1982 during its $33 million-grossing run (about $76 million adjusted) would be between 36 and 42 years old now. Which tells you something about who the fan"boys" are. Heh.

I will not resort to name-calling, though I'm very tempted to.

BUT, the fact that you saw nothing of interest in TRON after seeing it twice means that you probably just don't have the imagination to appreciate such a unique endeavor.

For some reason I can understand applauding or shouting out involuntarily during the course of a movie but at the end it's just sort of embarrassing. Seems perfectly appropriate at Comic-Con though. Like performing monkey said up top it's mostly people craving attention. I usually mutter something snarky under my breath like "they can't hear you" and then feel bad about it.

it was back in the day when films used to come out in the UK maybe a year after the US. It was my uncle who took me and it was known then that the film had OK back in the US but nothing special in terms of box office. Well, I came out of the cinema a very happy chappy and I asked my uncle why he thought it hadn't done so well back home when it was clearly a good movie. His answer will remain with me till my grave and I sorry to say that even now it does slightly prejudice my opinion of our cousins over the pond.... he said "Maybe because some Americans wouldn't know a good idea if one sat on their face." Sorry if that offends but everytime I see Tron I remember what he said and it still makes me chuckle a bit.

Tron

05:16:53 PM
What I loved about Tron was the visual design, the look of the world, the designs of the various machines and vehicles by Syd Mead, etc. And of course that Wendy Carlos soundtrack. As for story, it seems like it is a story that provides something to build all of the design around - I'm not sure it needed to be any more than that, frankly - a standard quest story to give an excuse to explore the world of Tron. So that's all I hope for in this sequel; more of that Tron design and music.

Still don't know how they fucking did al that blue shit!? i haven't seen it in years so by todays standards it most likely would have SpeedRacer fans laughing their asses off or bored to tears but by fuck Tron was ace! I rented 10,000 years BC for £4 and at the same time bought my Kid Jason and the Argonauts for £3! Argonauts pisses on it for exciting action adventure and is far more historically acurate too!

so go and do another Tron but I doubt it'll resonate quite so deeply as it did back in the days when you could believe being broken down into bits and zapped insite your comodore 64!

If you don't like crowd reaction at a movie...

...goto Japan. It's like a bloody funeral. Usually no laughs, no "whoa!", just silence as people watch the movie. Honestly, there is a big difference between a shared movie experience where people express emotion vs. some dipshit fuckwad talking through a movie. I love seeing films in a college town because you get that crowd reaction, and it enhances the film...for instance, in Dark Knight, I loved how people expressed the "daaaaaaaammmmmnnnnnn" emotion after Batman flips the semi then does a wall-jump with the cycle.

In terms of the fact that nobody talks, but, yeah, sometimes you like to get that reaction at high points (flipping the batpod) or at the end (yay, what a great movie). I just hate how in the US people seem to go to the movies to talk on their cell phones and/or never shut the fuck up! Its like, dude (or, as is usually the case, "dawg"), why did you bother coming here?! You could have saved ten bucks and talked on your cellphone at home or outside.

...and Lightbolt and Thunderfoot aside (was this before Starman?) TRON is what made him the Tucker of actors he is today (underused but very appealing). No, really, bizarrely even, this is almost as nice as learning of Metropolis' lost footage. TR2N, I can't even bitch about the SE7EN-like title: this rules all kinds of geekgasms. I admit I am biased: TRON is the flawed masterpiece par excellence and the only pre-Touchstone great live-action Disney release (Okay, Black Hole was a brilliant mess). I've always bitched about über-geeks, but I am very much wetting myself. TRON is unspeakably cool+retro (like putting "+" between adjectives), it was a ground-breaking m-f on almost the same level as Neuromancer, anyway... I apologize for the grandiloquence, I am beside myself and trying to reason with him.
A Nothing Of A Story?
by LaserPants
Jul 26th, 2008

A simple story, sure, like the original Star Wars, but that's hardly a "nothing". Hero goes to computer land and saves it from the evil computer overlord. It follows the simple heroic myth cycle. What else did you want? Sometimes simple is better (for proof of this, see the craptacular Matrix sequels; movies which confused pretentious bullshit for brilliance). But I'm sure we can all agree that the aesthetics of Tron, the design of the thing, is nothing short of brilliant.

TRON's flaws, if we can even call them that...
by AudaAbuTayi
Jul 26th, 2008
06:27:38 PM
The techie-terms are off, but remember before judging: this was a time of QBasic, prehistory of programming... Aside from that: lack of a true, impending menace, but when you see that Master Control Program at the end... Sure South Park made an unforgettable (and ridiculous) nod but still, they made him into Moses! Nay truly: you can nit-pick, you can bitch, but you will hardly find a more visionary work (and the few films of this caliber are always somewhat off the mark: check out Metropolis, 2001, Alphaville again, does it make them less great or just ballsy as hell?). TRON was a revolution, is a revolution and I hope Disney is aware of this. Hell, I hope they will once again bet on crazy ol' Lisberger to make it right (at least as a writer). I know I might be disappointed, but this is such a fucked-up sequel it actually has a chance to be great (BTW: has any movie waited 26 years before its sequel? Just curious... Godfather II - Godfather III = 16 years, Episode VI - Episode I = wait, that wasn't really a sequel since it was just a flashy fart-flame from C3PO's ass... but 16 years all the same).

The trailer was impressive - to me, a TRON fan. However, what you need to remember is that the vast majority of people out there don't know what TRON is, much less "T - R - 2 - N? The HELL?"

Fanboys often forget that what impresses them (Look, it's Jeff Bridges! He was that guy who was in THE DOOR IN THE FLOOR! FUCK YEAH!") isn't necessarily (or often) impressive to anyone else.

It's the same condition that caused wild applause at comic-cons for the WATCHMEN trailer and confused whispers or outright silence and/or cat-calls everywhere normal people congregate where the trailer has been shown.

Look at this trailer objectively. It looks no different to the averasge viewer than a trailer for TORQUE that rips off THE MATRIX.

Furthermore, this is clearly a toe-in-the-water from Disney, who obviously has absolutely no intention (wisely) of making a sequel to TRON ... ever.

Bottom line: TRON is, to me, a fantastic, epic movie. But it bored the shit out of my parents. And a sequel will bore the shit out of anyone who doesn't think typing on a computer screen makes for epic entertainment.

... as usual, you're wrong. Disney didn't fund the test footage and bring it to Comic Con because they have "no intention of making the sequel." Far from it. And if you can't parse Harry's final line in the updated story as a JOKE, then god help you, man. Literal-mindedness is one thing, but you approach the density of a black hole with that comment.

My comment wasn't based on a literal interpretation of Harry's words so much as the suggestion that this is exactly the sort of emblematic behavior when it comes to genre fans: spend money on our products and MAYBE we'll give you something you want because our focus groups suggest it might make us lots of cash - never mind that it might be good. That kind of 'wagging the tit' toward the fans is what I was referring to, not a literal undersanding of Harry's joke. Studios love to promise all kinds of cock-tease to genre fans, but rarely if ever deliver.

I was soooo pissed off at him and sent him a message and told him off. I called him arrogant too. His punk ass sent me a message back and called me too emotional and that we fans are self-centered. He also kicked me off his page. I can care less how many movies he's working on, he's still a jackass! He doesn't care about his fans, all he wants is our money. So those of you on here who don't like him, can say what you want. I'm sick and tired of these celebrities who complain soooo damn much about the paparrazi, but don't do much for their fans. If you were getting hammered by 300 or so people every day, asking the same 300 questions, wouldn't it begin to wear on your last nerve? What you got wasn't arrogance, it was probably frustration. In the past, there would have been a buffer between the fan and the actor by way of an army of publicists. Its nice to see that the guy's trying to make himself accessible, but ya gotta cut the guy some slack. He's still pretty green to the level of celebrity he's got now, and hasn't learned how to manage it. So, don't hate on him so much-yet.

But the more i see you post you mean everyone else own up to there shit and you guys just get a free pass. Wikipedia even mentions other incidents, so dude my point is you cant get mad at guys like ganymede because you and harry's mistakes gave him the power to be a asshole. I am not saying he is right just that once someone can honestly question one thing everyone can question everything

As a logo design it makes more sense. The 2 looks vaguely like an R. I wonder if they'll change it?

Oh, I get it alright. You're a fangirl who got stiffed. You say that you're a fan of his work and yet you clearly want something more (i.e. some sort of genuine interaction that he may not be willing to extend to just anybody).

Take a look at your initial post. Quote:

"I sent him a message yesterday and he finally responded to it, but he was questioning me like I was the media or some shit."

Considering the number of correspondences he receives everyday, this is no surprise. Did you say something in your message that would have made him question your motives?

"When I answered his question, he didn't respond back to it. I was soooo pissed off at him and sent him a message and told him off."

So, what you're saying is that he didn't respond quickly enough to your oh-so-important message and like a whiny brat, you flew off the handle and sent him ANOTHER message before he even had a chance to reply to the previous one. Brilliant!

"I called him arrogant too."

Classy! Is there any wonder why he called you "too emotional" and kicked you off his page?!

Cease and desist, geekwads!

Tron was a pioneer for it's time. It was fresh new, different and no one had seen anything like it. In todays flooded CGI market though. TRON 2 could end up being just another CG movie. No longer do f/x's wow us anymore, So the movie is gonna have to have a rely on a strong story and good acting.

I LIKE wireframe and lightbike racing on 2D grids. So sue me! Bring back ELITE on the C64!!!

Hadron Collider used in TR2N

Using the facilities of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the original was a stroke of genius. Placing the only unlocked terminal in front of a laser being used for teleportation experiments wasn't. Make a geek's day : Use the Hadron Collider in TR2N.

NO, I don't like him like that. I just like to support his work that he does onscreen. He questioned me because I told him about posers that were pretending to be him and that I was glad he got rid of them and when he asked me the question "How do you know about the posers?" I just told him that one of his fans had told me about it. So I waited for him to reply back, and I didn't get a response. I told him off because I didn't like how he was talking to me and that he didn't trust me. That's why he called me "too emotional" and that "we fans are self-centered". Self-centered my ass, he was the one acting like a complete jackass to me and told me have a good day. Like I want to know something about him for, he's not important anyway, he's just a damn celebrity that doesn't have time to talk to his fans and he's arrogant like people have said about him. I don't care how many movies he's working on, at least spend a little time to talk to your fans. In my opinion, if he keeps on doing these movies back to back like this, his ass will have a mental breakdown like Mariah Carey did or be another Heath Ledger. So his ass got a DUI, good for his ass, he shouldn't have been treating one of his fans like shit yesterday, then he wouldn't have gotten arrested again. lol He's making himself into a bad boy anyway, he'll be another Lindsey Lohan before you know it. Sorry DOGSOUP, I can't post the link because I deleted my page on MySpace. I'll NEVER trust an arrogant jerk like that again. Nobody questions and insults me because I will let your ass know what the deal is, I'm Sassy bitch!

If they can get it made for a reasonable budget, they are guaranteed to make a profit. I'm gonna be there. I loved the original. The Kubrickian pacing may not be to everybody's liking, but it sure worked for me then and I love it now. They may over-updated it, I dunno . . . but I still will want to see it. Guaranteed.

I am not obsessed with a crazy fool like that and no I don't have no damn problem, I just think he deserves whatever he gets, he's such an ungrateful bastard, a spoiled brat at that. I get tired of these celebrities getting into trouble and we expect to feel sorry for them, no we don't. We need to feel sorry for those who get involved with them when they do stupid shit like that. And nobody on this board is a fan of his anyway, so I had to bring it up in the Comic-con topic, since you guys are comic book geeks. So I had to let you guys know about it. And I act my age for your info, if Labeouf or anybody else in Hollywood had some damn sense, then I wouldn't be talking shit about him right now.

Or coins. Get over Shia. He's who he is, he's gonna make or break his own life, and that's that. Yeah, nobody here really cares for The Beef, but you can do something much more productive with your life than waste it finding avenues to vent on his grave offense to you. Sorry about that and all, but still . . . move on.
