You criticize Lucas for "money-grabbing," but cream over a three-minute promo to a movie of particularly noteworthy mediocrity. Outside of its videogame, "Tron" made "Phantom Menace" look like an action-packed epic filled with remarkable acting. "Tron" may be the most over-hyped, underwhelming movie in my lifetime. The last thing it needs is a sequel. Unless Disney is that desperate. What's next? "Night Cr2ssing"? "The Last FlIIght of Noah's Ark"? "The Watcher in the Woods Comes Back"? "The Blacker Hole"? For those of you who can't wait for this, two pieces of advice: 1) Go back and (try to) watch the original; 2) Be prepared to get what you ask for. Come on, I know Disney's been in a creative slump for years, but they might as well remake "Charley and the Angel" or "The Snowball Express."

PS, Term... wrong. Nostalgia is a powerful thing, but I completely disagree with your views on Tron. If you want to get technical, every movie ever made is a money grab.

... it was a special show for kids, and it had 2 old Disny 'toons before it, and man, I loved Tron before, but it kicked 20x more ass on that screen. That's just me though, I completely understand how bored some people can get with that movie. It's slow, quiet, and never really has a crescendo to a climax, but I love hanging out in that world. If you say this will go 3-D, then I smell Muppets 3-D, or a Captain EO crapfest. God willing this will pop up on youtubes for me to favorite.

because computers were just beginning to enter the public consciousness on a day-to-day sorta scale. They were still a novelty. Cool and mysterious. Twenty-six years later, everyone knows what computers can do and aren't surprised when they're made to do more. The coolest thing I've seen in a movie, effects-wise, since the rotoscoping in Tron, was "bullet-time" photography, which was quickly copy-catted into a cliche. Still waiting for the next cool FX

I see your point, but it would be difficult to ingore the computer world of today--which centers around the internet and peer to peer applications. If I remember correctly, the world of the original TRON only touched on the relationship of "users" with their "programs." No such thing as cyberspace back then. Just programs / applications doin' their thing.

Was Vincent Gallo's way of showing Harmony Korrine that a) Gallo's dick is bigger than his, and b) Korrine's ex-girlfriend Chloe is willing to suck it on camera.

And thats all well and good in a deeply insecure ego maniac kind of way, but the movie sucked ass. I find Korrine's films (especially Julian Donkey Boy) to be much, much better.

Though I must admit, I'd like to see them make a sequel which didn't treat the original as gospel. Kind of like the latest Hulk movie. The events of the first movie happened, sort of, just not necessarily in the way that we saw them.

I'd prefer that. Because as much as I love the original, some parts of Tron were really stupid.

That is ridiculous. Tron was a wonder in technology for its time. Also, when it comes to George Lucas being money hungry, I don't think that is it at all. What happened was he just made some shitty ass movies that were supposed to be prequels to the beloved original trilogy. He was just a complete control freak, unlike the original trilogy where other people directed the sequels. So, again, not money hungry, just shitty movies.

Are you really comapring George Lucas whoring Star Wars out and Disney making a Tron sequel? Hmmm... after Lucas made six movies, a Christmas Special and Special Edition, he sold the rights for countless action figures, dozens of video games, comics, books and now a cartoon movie and cartoon series. Meanwhile, Disney makes a Tron sequel 26 years after the original. Yeah, that's the same.

I didn't mean to say 'sold' the rights. Of course he owns the rights to Star Wars, that's my bad. And I fully expect Disney to bank on this Tron sequel and market it with toys, games, cereal, feminine hygiene products... but my point was there has been very little Tron out there for the past quarter century. Meanwhile, Lucas is letting his franchise get milked for all its worth. And more power to him. I am just over it. As a huge Star Wars fan, I'm not remotely excited about this new cartoon. I don't think Lucas cares about the Star Wars property or is just so far removed he is letting producers/writers/directors with dollar signs in their eyes run the franchise into the f'n ground. Even if Tron 2 is a blatant cash grab (isn't every movie?), that's fine by me, so long that Flynn isn't joined by Jar Jar Binks.

TRON vs. TPM
by Termigoonie
Jul 25th, 2008
03:41:37 PM
Phantom Menace wins every time. Sorry. But as a movie, TRON pretty much STINKS. I thought it in 1982 and I believe it even more today. I even bought the special edition thinking maybe I was wrong. Bad acting, bad story, frankly not-very-good effects (overall) and an absolute lack of any interest or excitement. TRON lives off of the memory of what better marketers did -- and what they did back then was extraordinary. TRON was the EPCOT Center of movies, a movie that would show us what the future was going to be. Too bad it absolutely stunk. Phantom Menace may be talky and slow, with a wooden lead actor and some clumsy dialogue, but it's the far superior film any day.

"Phantom Menace wins every time." Among retards, there can be no doubt. Also, to the guy who said Clu was killed by the MCP...the MCP was going around absorbing the useful functions of any programs he came in contact with. No doubt Clu had a lot of Flynn's more clever programming and I'm sure the MCP felt it had a use for it, particularly because Flynn was a thorn in the MCP's side. When the MCP was shut down, all of the resources it had appropriated were returned. Stands to reason that the programs he'd absorbed would re-rez...maybe Clu came back with some residual effects from being integrated into the MCP. Interesting...interesting...

But, I hope that Disney realises that most of the fans have grown up know and they have to push the pg-13. I hope it is more sexual since on the DVD the Director of the previous one showed a Deleted scene. This sequel needs to have more mature depth.
