There's enough girly squealing on most television sites, as it is. I'm surprised I didn't hear the high-pitched wails from downtown, (I live about 15 mins away from Comic Con).
So basically this was NYC Comic Con "The Spirit" panel...

...there's a fucking massive audience for this film. My sister is one who goes wild about this series. The trailer looks like disgusting teen drama but hey, Hardwicke has two good films under her belt IMO (Thirteen and Lords of Dogtown) so best of luck to her. Regardless, I'll be skipping this film.

Long have I waited for the day when the fanboys would get some idea of what it feels like to be a geek of the wrong gender, twitching with discomfort as the salivating man-hordes genuflect to Cameron Diaz's magical swirlng bon bons. Sweet, sweet vengeance is mine!

OK I've never read the books but to be as popular as they are they HAVE to be better than the footage seen so far. Really amatuerish with actors being all "IM A VAMPIRE WATCH ME BE VAMPIREY!!!" and the filmmaking looking very workmanlike. Someone tell me Im wrong here.

As I was sitting in the theater for the midnight show of Dark Knight with the teeming throngs of people I was having the same exact conversation with a friend how geek culture has basically become a poseur filled zeitgeist. All of the sudden EVERYONE loves Star Wars, superheroes, etc. and it's just complete horseshit. You're older than I am but even back in the day when I was a kid or in high school back when the first Star Wars Prequel came out I was one of maybe four people who had an interest in that kind of shit. I would have NEVER admitted to collecting action figures to the public at large and no one talked comics. Now people act as if they were always there. Bullshit. I was certainly there and THEY certainly weren't. These are people with nothing but the thinnest grasp on what these properties stand for or mean to people whose lives were changed by them. They serve no other purpose other than to take up space at conventions screaming about something they really know nothing about and generally killing a real fans good time. I really hope the idiot public finds something else to be obsessed with. I blame Hot Topic.
It does seem like fanboys getting a taste of their own...

seriously, it looks like a bad network sci-fi pilot or something. I've never read the books, and I'm pretty sure I never will. But that's not because of how shitty it looks and more because the plot sounds like every other vampire "gothic romance" there's ever been. Is that an actual genre now?

This one is mine. I love the books, hope the movie does it justice. And flickchick85, between Laurell K. Hamilton to Charlaine Harris and now to Stephanie Meyers as well as many others... it definitely seems that way.

What are your thoughts of the footage of the film shown? Because from where i'm standing it looks like just another bad teen action thriller in the spirit of The Covenant. Bland filmmaking with no atmosphere, bad special effects, and actors playing up the VAMPIRENESS! of it all. I mean did you see hte footage of the fight between the good vampire (Edward?) and the bad vampire guy (a bad actor)? It was seriously the most stock looking overly wireworked vampire fight footage I've ever seen. Compete with cheesy bad guy vampires lame taunts in between. The whole thing just screams bland. I know you like the books, but if you'd never read them I bet you would have looked at that trailer and dismissed the film immediately. give us some perspective from your side because the books gotta be better than that.

And I was too young to go to the con back in the good old days and lived a country away to boot. now I live in LA, a two hour drive, and I wouldn't go near that thing boring looking mess. Lament for me. I've been watching footage of the Wolverine panel online and it's just ridiculous. WHy would I want to sit in a room while an actor whose performance I take issue with mugs for the fans (who once again, know NOTHING about the character to begin with) and tells them everything they want to hear and they just scream like sheep in return?

Like, TITANIC big. We're talking $70-80 million opening weekend and probable $200-300 million domestic box office.

I love the books, personally, and I'm a guy. I'll be there with my fiancee and this isn't the type of movie that fans of the book will see just once, that's why I'm predicting HUGE shocking numbers.
as for what Twilight is about, for those who don't know

a short synopsis...

A girl moves in with her dad in Washington state, goes to high school, and meets a bunch of weird looking kids who keep to themselves.

The strange kids turn out to be vampires, but they don't drink human blood, they go out once a month and hunt mountain lions and feed off of them.

Eventually Bella (the main girl) and Edward (the main guy) hook up and start dating and he introduces her to his "family" which is a bunch of other vampires, some with special abilities - one is really strong, one is psychic, one can control people's emotions and their leader is a doctor whose in his mid-20s who people in the town think adopted the other kids. The doctor is actually interesting because he's a surgeon, is around blood all the time, but is so old he's learned to shut off his thirst for human blood.

One day the family goes out to play baseball in the woods. and it's vampire baseball, and since they're all super strong, they hit the ball like half a mile and go chasing after it with super speed (which should be a cool scene in the movie).

At that point their game is interrupted by three vampires who come out of the woods. they're bad vampires, they still drink human blood. they come up on the Cullens and are confused as to why they keep a human with them.

Eventually the head of the other clan wants Bella, and Edward is forced to protect her, so he takes her away. the only thing is, the other vampire is a master tracker, so he hunts her down.

The Cullen family hides Bella, but the other vampire comes up with a plan and eventually gets ahold of her, which brings us to the scene that was shown at ComicCon.

There's also a minor subplot in the story involving a clan of American Indian werewolves that becomes larger in books two and three - as the werewolves and vampires inhabit the same land, and the werewolves are sworn to protect humans from the vampires.

The Indian kids don't know they're werewolves, and only start to change once the outsider vampires start to show up on their lands. So the next books deal with them becomming werewolves and Bella falling for one of the werewolves after she has a falling-out with Edward.

Oh, and the last book has a big war between the good vampires, the werewovles and some Vatican-like clan of super vampires that are older and more powerful than any vampires on earth.

So, yeah, that's Twilight.
'Twilight' to open on December 12th

V'Shael, in answer to your question, December 12th is the day that 'Twilight' is scheduled to open in the U.S. & Canada. Also opening on that day is the remake of 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'. It will be interesting to see which film wins the weekend. I don't know if Summit Entertainment will open 'Twilight' in enough theatres to beat 'TDtESS' in total box office, but I do think that it will beat 'TDtESS' in per-screen average. But that's just my un-educated guess.

A little more about the plot...

MagicRat, you left out the biggest point of all. At it's core, Twilight is a love story. It's about a forbidden romance... a human and a vampire and the complications that come from that. It's more about the characters and their relationships than it is about the vampire aspect. To some of the others that have posted, this story is so much more than an "emo" movie or a typical vampire story. Twilight is far from typical. Also, FYI, the clips and trailers that have been shown are not fully edited. Many of the effects are not finished, which is why some of the clips look "dull" and "tv-like". As a fan (and not a tween), I'm very interested to see these characters brought to life on the big screen. What interests me about the movie is that they have tried their hardest to make it true to the books. From what I've seen so far, I think they have done a fantastic job. They chose the right cast, have the right script, and I think for fans, it's going to be decent.

...and I hate the fact that the entire 'vampires in contemporary america' genre (1) has gotten as big as it has, and (2) is almost entirely subverted by pseudo romance writers.

Every other fucking book out there these days is some chick being oddly attracted to the dark/emo/whatever guy who also happens to have some sort of supernatural powers. Enough already.
And yet all the male geeks

practically cream themselves over Spider Man, X-Men or Batman or whatever comic book movie they freak over. All of them profess how AMAZING the movie is, but to most of the girls (I'm a guy so I can't really speak for them but I'm guessing) these movies pretty much suck. They like their chick flicks or their romantic comedies or their dramas, or in this case their teenage-vampire-romance adventure movie. Why can't we let the girls have their fun, when they always let us have ours?

instead of the kristin stewart one, but i'll rehash coz i enjoy a rant. these books are poorly written and poor hardwick, who honestly does a good job with gritty material like '13', has nuthin' to work with here so this movie is going to be terrible too. the whole situation came from a bunch of teenage girls looking for a post harry potter fixation and they found it in these mormon-y uptight fake romances.

I am excited about the movie, but I do have my concerns. Honestly, the trailer didn't entice me very much, and I have seen the footage between Edward (good vamp) and James (bad vamp) and hope the finished product looks better. I'm a big fan of Kristin and Catherine though, so I'm willing to hope for the best until I see the whole thing. And also, I have yet to see a movie that's better than the book. I don't expect this one to be any different.

This will be HUGE. Entertainment Weekly did a cover story about it. The issues were sold out everywhere. Bookstores are doing midnight parties for the release of the next one. I read a quote from a fan saying the author was better than JK Rowling because Rowling might be a one hit wonder. -_- Anyway Mormon vampires can't be that fun, can they?

That argument holds no weight. If you had actually read the books, you would know that her step father is new, and is actually quite a bit younger than her mother, who was also very young when she had Bella. ALso, YOU may not have heard of the series before the trailer, but the thousands of fans of the series were around long before the movie was even cast.

Actually, I'm a huge Whedon fan, and a huge Twilight fan, and I really don't consider it to be a ripoff of Buffy. While there are some similarities between the Buffy/Angel and Bella/Edward relationship, the two stories are quite different.
