Of course the whole point is showing that Downey's Character's supposed to be a idiotic actor who doesn't realize he's crossing the line by doing black-face. The ironic thing is, Downey, being an actor, is putting on black-face for laughs. This is the imagery that hurts black people. A white man doing make-up as a black man. It's post-modern humor, but it's still black-face. I think the film "Bamboozled" covers this subject of ironic black-face quite well. Racist humor is the cheapest laugh you can get.

I agree with you. Plus, some people are too dull to think about the fact that it's not merely an actor in blackface for a role. It's an actor playing an eccentric actor in blackface for a role. And from what I saw in the trailer, it's frickin hilarious, and there's enough moments (even in the trailer alone) where the other (true) black actors in the fictitious movie give Downey's character weird, condemning looks and make remarks--along the lines of "What do you mean 'we people?'" to suggest that it's THAT actor in the movie--not Downey the actor--who is really strange

Also, downey is not black, has not been affected by the SERIOUS OPPRESSION black peolpe feel regularly (like my friend who just got pulled over by cops while on his bike because he looked like someone who was in a fight. He's a fucking hippy dred guy with a sweet face. The cops fucked with him base only on race) I don't deal with that issue cause I'm white; Downey as well. I was thinking about that. The only response I could come up with is that I'd be more worried about those people being allowed to vote than allowed to see a film that uses complex satire. I think the inclusion of the actually black character was an important choice, if Downey Jnr. had been the only "black" character then I'd feel more worried. Of course even the rapper probably doesn't get off lightly. Is his name a reference to rap's perceived obsession with Scarface? Anyway, I'll withhold judgment till I see it. Better this kind of satire than the heavy handedness of Crash, I think.

I want to laugh when someone calls Downey or Stiller a racist when talking about Downey's character in Tropic Thunder. I remember when two black men pretended to be white girls (and acted like blonde stereotypes) not to long ago. I don't remember there being an uproar about that. I thought the idea was pretty funny (the movie wasn't however). Of course Downey's role is not politically correct. Neither Is Jack Black's 'Fats' character. "The Fatties"?? Okay, how about "Simple Jack: A story about a retard". Not one second of this movie is politically correct, and we all know it. Why can't we laugh about a fictional character who decides to consume himself in a role to the point of having a medical surgery performed on him without being worried about it being racist. It's too ridiculous to racist. Just as "White Chicks" was too ridiculous to be racist. There are more issues out there that needs way more attention then Tropic Thunder. I can’t wait to see it.

Based on the trailer, etc. I've seen, I have absolutely no problem with this aspect of the film. I feel no outrage, moderated or otherwise. I think it's hilarious and Downey is obviously overacting like crazy...anyway, it's not like he's got black paint on his face or whatever. I actually think that this role is more similar to straight actors playing "gay" characters like in "Boat Trip" or that Adam Sandler movie last year...although to better effect. I think having an actually black character in the film was a good move, in terms of defusing any criticism...he stands in for black people in the audience who are outraged or offended. "What do YOU mean, 'you people'?"

I'm so sick of the "you don't know what racism is like" b.s. argument. It's presumptive and ignorant. I'm a straight white guy (well my grandma was actually full cherokee, but somehow I'm white, though if I was a quarter black then... screw it thats another argument). I was born in 1980. I never drank from a "white only" fountain. I never went to a "white only" school. Growing up I had black friends, Mexican friends, and gay friends. I never treated these friends any differently than any other. Yet I have been bashed over the head for 28 years now with a guilt trip over something I had no part of, and very few of the black people I know were truly affected by. I'm not saying that some people aren't racist. A lot are. But the system of societal racism that existed in this county is long passed, and people need to stop reaching to find examples. Your friend got pulled over? Was he beaten? Aressted? Killed? No. He was asked some questions, because maybe, just maybe a guy involved in a fight was described as being a sweet faced hippy dred guy. I would argue that in todays world (oustide rural pockets in the south and mid-west) their is a pretty good balance between the pluses and minuses of being black in America. In fact I have to fight harder as a straight white man for many jobs in this country because preferences are placed on recruiting and hiring minorities and women. Is that fair? I'm not trying to say that no one gets referred to as an n-word. or that wealthy black men don't get mistaken for rap stars and football players. But is any of that different from me being ostresized and mocked when I go to a "black" club. Or when I get called white boy or cracker, or am told that the only reason I have what I have is because everything was given to me (not because I put myself through college and worked my ass off every day). Racism has been a function of humanity since the cavemen days, just don't try and pretend its one sided. Oh and the difference between "White Chicks" and "Tropic Thunder"? In Tropic Thunder a white man is in black face to make fun of the idiot white man who thinks he knows how to "act black." I watched this trailer with a predominantly black audience over the weekend, and the majority of audience members laughed out loud every time Downey uttered a line. I can certainly see the potential for some to be offended, but I see this as more a mocking of Hollywood stereotypes than as a mocking of black people. But to those who compare a white guy pretending to be black to the Wayans dressing up as black chicks, you are full of shit. I'm so tired of straight white men acting like they are just as oppressed as everyone else. African Americans have spent the last few hundred years being abused and discriminated against in this country. One of the ways this manifested itself was in Hollywood portrayals of blacks that mocked them and reinforced hateful, negative stereotypes. The fact that rich white girls have not had to deal with such hatred and prejudice means that mocking them is different than mocking black people.

Before you write crap about him laying out in little girls bedrooms check your facts. He stumbled into the wrong house ( his was next door) and slept in an empty bed in the owners sons room. He also almost died that night. The paramedics took over a half hour to revive him. He was so out of it he had no idea where he was and almost ended it all right there. So yeah.don't write that kind of shit when all you have to do is read a ton of articles etc and the truth. you are right about one thing. he is awesome in Scanner Darkly.
