What can I say? He's made a few good films - Pee Wee, Ed Wood, Batman Returns - but nothing to justify the way he's somehow lauded as a visionary and an auteur. He's the original 'Dark = Good' guy. (No, in actual fact Good = Good.) What other 'visionary' would turn in those terrible remakes of Willy Wonker and Planet of the Apes?

Burton should be all awesome and stuff, and make this children's movie terrifying and unrelentingly nightmarish! He doesn't have to worry about scaring away the target kids' demographic, because the legions of fanboys who love dark, awesomely bitter and hopeless movies will flock to this, in the same way that fanboys made such a gigantic box office smash out of Snakes on a Plane! i'd rather it be all stop motion, puppets and models, but the way theyre doing it here sounds like it could be mindbottling. and how could anyone say 'tim burton suck' you sound like a neanderthal, and it's a dumb statement, the guy makes dark fairy tales, you don't get that much often in films at all, he's refreshing, so what if he repeats himself sometimes, he has a lot of ideas he wants to spread around and he can't jumble them all into one film. and he has more than 2 good films.

Excepting "The Corpse Bride" (which was, like everything the man does, visually interesting but dull) Burton hasn't made a truly original feature in 18 years. Why is everyone so in love with this guy? Oh, and obvious casting - Jeffrey Jones as the White Rabbit, Depp as Mad Hatter, probably Jack Black as the Cheshire Cat (although Danny Devito would make sense too), and natch Bonham-Carter as the Queen of Hearts

This girl was GREAT in IN Treatment. I wanted to box her ears and at the same time give her a hug. She'll give a great performance. THOUGH I'm kinda sick of Tim Burton dropping his dark, gothic log all over every. I'd like to see the dude so something totally original now and then. What if Tim got his hands on a Charlie Kaufman script? Or if he did a dark 70's cop movie? Maybe get him on a Lovecraft story. Lets change it up, Timmy-boy. And don't put your struggling wife in all of your movies, for the love of Bob.
NOBODY ever does Alice in Wonderland right.

They always cast a teenager or adult Alice, and then make all the creatures of Wonderland into a smorgasbord of celebrities wearing silly costumes (but making sure not to hide their faces, so you can recognize them). They also make it into a musical-- Sure, there were some songs in the book, but there were songs in Lord of the Rings, too, and they didn't go nuts and make THAT into a musical.

I love Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, but I've disliked EVERY SINGLE film adaptation I've ever seen. Nobody ever, ever, ever gets it right. It just becomes a way to parade big name celebrities around.

Burton will fuck this up with his trademarked, painfully-forced weirdness. I was a goth-punk in the 80s, and he had some level of cool back then, but now he just does weird for the sake of being weird, and it ends up more often like Planet of the Apes or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory ("weirder" versions of older movies) rather than like Sweeny Todd (A true improvement upon the stage version in some respects, thanks to Burton toning down his "weird-for-weirdness'-sake" aesthetic.)

Burton misses a lot more than he hits, and it's been that way since Batman. Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Ed Wood, and PARTS of Sleepy Hollow were awesome. The rest of his films have been fundamentally flawed.

Also, as much as I love Elfman, Burton needs to dump him for future movies. This marriage made in hell is what kills Burton's work half the time. Ed Wood was great because we didn't have Elfman's tiresome scores punctuating everything the characters did with loud brass blurts or childrens' choirs singing "lalalala" --- The guy rewrites the Beetlejuice score for everything he does, with the exception of Sweeny Todd, where his work was quite good.

This seems to happen with *every *film released to be honest.Masses of hype, and then , they are lucky to get two weeks at my local crappy multiplex {cineworld Bexleyheath ,England...the most ineptly run cinema in the western world!!!}before vanishing , turning up on DVD four months later , for a slight revival..and then gone again more or less for good.It takes a classic one in fifty or so films to take on any sort of post cinema showing life. That said I rather liked Sweeney Todd, and with the exception of Planet of the apes.I've liked everything Tim has produced. He does seem to be in a bit off a rut though. As a few peaple have mentioned, Alice is sooo kind of predictable ..that it's like hes already made it.Stripey socks all round, and dark under the eyes ahoy!

Focussing issues, yes, though not quite as bad as your experiences. Plus, you have cleaners? Streatham looks like it hasn't been cleaned since the Seventies. There are probably still several 'Olde English Spangles' trodden into what's left of the carpet.

However, it's the clientele that really make the experience. Endless hordes of hooded, fourteen-year-old scum who like nothing better than to sit in the dark talking loudly to each other on their mobile phones. Why do some people want to spend money to talk through a film and why can't it be legal for me to stab them?

I think he's the most successful when he has a sense of whimsy and humor in his films. Unlike Fincher, a truly hit or miss director, Burton isn't an aesthetic nihilist. Although, when he makes a truly dark film, it usually fits the material. Sweeny Todd was probably his bleakest film to date. His last truly great movie was Big Fish, which wasn't that dark at all. In fact, watching Big Fish you might have been tricked into thinking that Burton actually likes humanity.

If you were a goth-punk in the 80s you were still 5-10 years too late! I keed.

Have you seen the original Family Dog (Amazing Stories short not the shite series)? Burton designed the characters, Brad Bird directed it, and getting to the point, Elfman did the music. I think you'll find the Beetlejuice score in there, too. A couple of years before the film.

Perfect material for Burton

I'll agree he is hit or miss, but I'll be anxious to see his take on Wonderland. I can't imagine any other director I'd want to see do this movie, he's perfectly suited for it. He can't be timid though, he needs to unleash here, let this be the culmination of everything whimsical he's done up to this point.

Had he not pulled off the musical aspects of Sweeney Todd and Charlie so well (odd, but well), I'd be bothered by this having songs in it. An Elfman score would be well-suited, but he needs to step it up too, let this be epic.

Yes, by all means, keep casting Helena, she's gorgeous and talented. She would make a perfect queen. Someone suggested Rickman for the Mad Hatter, and I can picture him in the role physically, but could he pull off the craziness of the character that Depp could easily lend. Looks like a good choice for Alice.

I just hope Burton decides to really go at it once and for all. I don't feel he's over-rated, I feel he has yet to hit his whimsical peak. Don't disappoint us Tim, let that imagination fly.
