I really don't quite see the point. 3d movies that are designed as 3d movies (flaming arrows coming at you, monsters spitting goop etc) are one thing, but making a standard film in to a bit of a pop up book just seems odd. Hopefully I'll be sufficiently amazed and eat those words when it appears.

I think a 3D movie mght be more appealing if it was shot like a standard movie. It could have a feeling of "depth" without causing you to duck from a yo-yo being hurled at you.

being a die hard Star Wars fan with no will power, I am probably going to see all the movies AGAIN in 3D. And so is everybody else. Don't lie bitches. At least have the heart to take your kids to that shit. They'll go bananas. Absolutely bananas. I'm pissed though. This is a gimmick at best, but who could really turn down the chance to see the original trilogy on the big screen again? As long as they're not the versions with all the tagged on CG shit, I'll be there opening night.

Seriously. I'd love to see brand new material set in this universe. I'd even pay to see it in 3D. The only thing that is going to get my ass in that seat though is the promise that someone else has written and directed the story (and please, for the love of God, can we let the whole "Clone Wars" storyline die already). The only reason Lucas keeps recycling these movies is because he doesn't know how to tell a better story than the one he already has. All he does is slap a new coat of makeup on the same turd and puts it on display again. And again. And again. Retain all the creative rights you want Mr. Lucas, but just admit that there are others out there who are more skilled than you to tell these stories. Let them do it.

since I watched Return of the Jedi for the first time alone, I was without guidance for the story as a wee lad, and I thought the Anakin ghost showing up at the end was Uncle Owen. Made sense to me. Vader/Anakin should be in Jedi Hell anyway, or at least show up as a charred dismembered ghost. You can't indirectly kill billions of people and redeem yourself by saving your son.

Because it turns a great movie into a gimmick. It was never meant to be in 3D. You don't see Coppola going back and making Apocalypse Now in 3D just because the technology is there to do it. I just want Lucas to leave these classic movies alone. Let them stand the test of time for what they were.

It Is Time For Lucas To Start New Franchises
by Media Messiah
Jul 23rd, 2008
03:03:43 PM
Star Wars and Indiana Jones have run their course as franchises...and Lucas and company refuse to advance the Star Wars mythology into a future sequel trilogy. With that in mind, it is time for something new...and for new original movies with franchise potential. Imagine Lucas doing an original super hero movie...or another genre of film??? Lucas has the money and the facilities to do it, but does nothing??? In fact, he has the infrastructure to start Lucas Studios and become a full film studio, but refuses that option. Lucas has the ability to safely produce and market four films a year as an independent studio but does nothing???

I would like to be a part of it, should Lucas move in that direction...as I think it could be a wonderful learning ground. Hopefully, Lucas will take my advice, not that he needs it, but in many ways he does, since I have heard of a phalanx of Yes Men surrounding him, and maybe he'll move his company to the next logical level and fully compete with other studios, big and small.

I enjoy coming to this site for news and media coverage etc. And while I like to skim the talkbacks for bits of info or for new URLs when content has been pulled off the main page, the immaturity of people is really annoying. Many of you seem to be that person in an office that no one wants to talk with because s/he is so irritating and lacking normal social skills? Can someone please tell me why they HATE Lucas so much? I liked SW as a kid... and I still think the ESB is a great movie, but, in my opinion, the rest of the films are only OK. But I am not the age group Lucasfilm is making this stuff for, for example, my nephew LOVES everything SW, Transformers, Batman, Potter etc but he is 12. From what I have seen, I would say for the most part that the SW films fall within the worst and best of those franchises. If I was 12, I'd be all over SW as well... but I'm in my 30s and grew out of them. I guess I have a hard time understanding why 75% of this talkback page is saying "Lucas raped my childhood" and "Lucas just wants the money." Well DUH! of course he wants the money! What business doesn't want your money? You don't think Porsche wants your money... or SONY... or Apple... or Nike? They make something and then you as a consumer buy it. That is how it works. If you don't like it, then don't buy it... it is that easy. As for the "Childhood rape" stuff, unless Lucas bought a time machine with his billions and went back when you were 10 and stuck his dick in you then he did not rape you. I find it hard to equate child rape with rereleasing a bunch of films. It's like when "Hitler" is used to describe politicians. Really? Is that the best you can come up with? They may be very bad as what they do, but a Hitler?

Pondscum, mode_7 - re codymr
by spud mcspud
Jul 23rd, 2008
04:19:37 PM
People like codymr will NEVER understand the level of hate we give Lucas, no matter how much we explain it. He talks aboput Porsche, Nike etc as if they are an equivalent to Star Wars - well, I don't know anyone who loves Nikes so much they'd go buy the same pair five times on the day they opened. Do they do merchandising lines for each new Nike? Can you buy action figures? Can you memorise their dialogue?

These are classic, truly classic, movies. They changed some of our lives.

Here in the UK, in the 70s, life wasn't that easy. Nationwide strikes. Regular power cuts lasting 12 hours or more. Outdoor toilets. No indoor bathrooms (bathing in tin baths or sinks, drying off by the gas fire). TV only on for maybe 10 hours a day, if that. NO MONEY ANYWHERE.

By God, we needed some escapism. Then STAR WARS hit, and it rocked EVERYONE'S world.

For some of us, that fucking movie was the only thing keeping us sane as kids. As we grew up, trying to make sense of an insensible world, EMPIRE and JEDI joined us, and the Saga grew up with us. mode_7 nails this - it's not melodramatic, the original trilogy is so ingrained in growing up that it literally becomes who we are - our worldviews are entwined with it; it goes with us throughout life. The most painful thing is - and you'll only truly get this if you are in any way an artist yourself - LUCAS GAVE UP ON THAT SAGA. He did the new trilogy first and foremost as a test run for his new CGI, sound and SFX developments; secondly as a way to make muchos grande moneys from merchandising; and, a distant third, closing the saga he began before. It's very, veyr obvious he has no passion, no interest and no care for how the prequels turned out, because even the stars of the movies are now quietly trying to distance themselves from them (see any interview by Ewan where he's asked about the movies post-2006). THEY ARE, ARGUABLY AND INDISPUTABLY, UTTER AND COMPLETE SHIT. No ifs or buts. It can be debated til the cows come home. People like codymr don't care, because - and I'm sure he realises this - HE'S NOT INVESTED IN THIS SAGA LIKE WE ARE.

For us, it's part of our lives. If you don't get that, if your life is so passionless that art doesn't move you any more, what the FUCK are you doing on a site with talkbacks so the movie faithful can covnverse to their heart's content about how great/shit certain movies are and what they mean to them? FUCK OFF AND DO SOMETHING THAT DOES MOVE YOU, YOU FUCK!!!

Life is too short for twats like codymr, who JUST DOESN'T FUCKING GET IT!

Yes even Episode 3, which I think I've made a pretty strong case time and time again is actually the WORST of the three. not that any apologists would bother listening or coming up with a counterargument. no god Forbid they put any thought into their passionless brainwashed love for Lucas and his greed.

Ok, I was 11 when Star Wars came out, and like a lot of SW geeks, it changed my life forever. I am as big a SW geek as anyone I have come across. My passion for it runs pretty deep. I have tons of collectibles, I even have 2 SW tattoos. That being said, I am wondering what is different about me, because I enjoyed the prequels. Are they as good as the first three? Not by a long shot. But I still enjoyed the story they told. Jar Jar was annoying as hell and made me appreciate the Ewoks(!!!!) a bit more, god help me for saying that LOL. Hayden was wooden at times, but I felt that his performance in EpIII was far better than in EpII. But overall, they were inferior to the originals. That being said, I do not feel I am an "undemanding" SW fan, or that I gave Lucas a pass on the prequels, none of that. I understand that a lot of people didn't like, in some cases hated the prequels. I am as invested in the saga as any die hard SW fan is, it was a part of my childhood and is still a part of me to this day and always will be. So I guess what I am saying is, obviously I do not agree that the prequels were "utter shit" as you put it in your post. You don't know me so you cannot adequately judge my passion for these movies, so I am just wondering why, being the SW fanatic that I am, that I was able to enjoy the prequels. I mean, I know why I enjoyed them, I don't need anyone to explain that to me, but I am interested in knowing why you think a "true" SW fan could not have possibly liked the prequels, because that is implied in your post.

I think I'd actually go see Phantom Menace if they put in the scene where Maul gets kicked off the Queen's ship on Tatooine and cut out some dialog from Jake and Jar Jar. They also keep threatening to replace the Yoda puppet in that one, which I guess I could go for. I actually like Clones, but they deleted the wrong scenes in that one too, and they also never came through on the sizzling rain hitting the lightsabers. If the 3D looks good, I'd probably sit through them all again once.

Not only should we be glad to have the option to see movies like this in theater, it would be nice to have the option to see more. Many of the limited re-issues we've seen over the past decade came about because Lucas proved it could be profitable to do it. It used to be commonplace for Disney to re-release everything when I was a kid, and it was cool that I got to see some classic animation in theaters instead of on a crappy little TV. Even if you don't want to see this particular re-issue, the fact that they happen and are successful will benefit most film fans in some way.

by Termigoonie

Someone said, "Lucas should have died in 1983." So, basically, we wouldn't have had ILM as we know it, LucasArts and its videogames, Pixar (which he didn't sell for two more years) and its movies, Star Tours, Indiana Jones at the theme parks, none of the Indy sequels, Willow, Tucker, Labyrinth, the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, Captain EO (for better or worse), or virtually ANY digital effects in films -- since it was the combination of ILM and Pixar that led to those breakthroughs. We also wouldn't have had digital editing (i.e., the Avid), Skywalker Sound or THX. For a guy who you claim has only had "one idea," that's a hell of a lot of impact on the entertainment industry as we know it today. And you may very well be proven wrong, just as those who disclaimed "Star Wars" as a "kiddie film" were back in 1977 -- it's quite possible, based on what I've seen and the reaction I've heard from THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN IT, that "The Clone Wars" will be a milestone in cinematic animation, particularly in the quality we see on TV. You know, for people who claim they like the movies, some folks here sure seem to be ignorant of exactly what George Lucas has done and the impact he's had on the entire industry. The Academy got it right when they gave him the Irving Thalberg Award, but maybe they gave it to him about 15 years too soon, because his influence on virtually every modern filmmaker in existence is only starting to become noticeable. Stop your hating and imagine the world if George Lucas had "died in 1983." And then think about what you're saying. If he's doing it for the money, it sure is a STRANGE way to do it -- to finance an entire movie and TV series individually and to do it in the way HE wants, without any outside influence. If the thing bombs (I doubt it will, but IF), then he loses hundreds of millions of dollars. It seems there are a lot easier ways to do it for the money if money is all he cares about.

I don't care what any of the haters say. I was just as the "Science of Star Wars" exhibit last weekend here in the Twin Cities and the place was absolutely jam-packed with kids of all ages. Pretty remarkable since it's been 3 years since SW was last at the forefront of the public eye. It doesn't really matter what you think of the Special Editions or prequels--the simple fact is they've ushered in a whole new generation of fans.
This is definitely real.

Those who doubt this report are ignorant. I read an interview with George Lucas a couple years ago where he said he was going to do this. Probably not only for his movies either. He believes that 3D will make people come to the theaters instead of waiting for the DVD. Also, 3D is supposed to prevent people from videotaping movies and uploading them. (I would think you could just shoot through one lens of the 3D glasses and make it work, though.)

Well, that's true, just as Walt Disney's "minions" and Bill Gates's "minions" and Henry Ford's "minions" did the work. There was a person behind the vision -- and look what happened to Henson after HE died. As for owning the companies, you're right -- and guess what it takes to start a company? Money. Money that George Lucas, without investors, gambled himself. As for the assertion that digital effects and "green screen technology" cut down costs of production, when movies cost $200-$300 million, you can hardly say that, can you? I think you all over-estimate just how much money any one project can possibly return. Given the hit-driven nature of the videogame business, it will be surprising if "The Force Unleashed" makes more than $20-$30 million in profit -- and that money has to go to pay the employees (the "minions") who work for Lucas. You'd be quite surprised at how (relatively, of course) little is left once costs of any major entertainment project are considered.

Time to let it go, George. Focus your 'talent' elsewhere. How about a Mutt movie? You know we're all just dying for that! With extra monkey/vine shenanigans too!

But rather the money is simple a tangible way to satisfy his GIGANTIC BLOATED EGO! George Lucas is a Narcissist, plain and simple. He surrounds himself with yes men, refuses criticism, and explains away such with the usual "I made it for kids..I'm sure the fans will complain" excuse he has been milking since TPM. His self importance and self love are only matched by the hatred he has for the fans who made him, and the creation they shackled him too. The reason George keep returning to Star Wars is simply that it is safe, he has sailed these seas and weathered all possible storms on them. His ego won't let him put himself on the line by producing anything new and untested, something that might face fresh criticism that he could not white wash. All George has is Star Wars. Like an old time Rock and Roll star whose ego won't let him take a bow an exit gracefully and instead is reduced to playing his old hits at county fairs, George Lucas will milk his big hit till the day he takes his last breath.

Pondscum: Nope, I don't work for Lucasfilm. I work in news. And I would say that there are a lot of childish thing I enjoy... heck, I enjoy a couple of the SW films. And did I see the others. Yup. But that aside, my reason for hitting this talkback was to see if anyone knew more about the 3D process being used. Instead, many people post their hate on for Lucas... That seems like a lot of wasted effort to me because Lucas and his people will continue to do what they do unless there is no money to be made. I think it's always been that way - if ANH had tanked in 77, then there would never have been episodes V-III. So the whole exercise seems a little sad to me, because I bet most of these people are highly intelligent and have a lot of interesting points to make. I have absolutely no qualms with people disliking Lucas, but come up with a some better material... better than "he sucks". As for being fun at parties... can't say I have ever asked anyone, but I do a hell of a keg stand. = = mode_7: Thx for explaining your point of view. I see your point to a degree... but, if you don't mind a followup, was there not SW saturation when we were kids (I'm assuming that we are roughly the same age)? As a kid, I had and still have packed away many of the toys, T shirts, comics... even bed sheets. Would you agree that there was a similar saturation point back in say 82 or 83? It's just as kids we didn't have any understanding of price points and margins. = = spud mcspud: You are right, I may never truly understand, but that is why I asked people to explain it to me in my original post. I grew up in Canada where things were not nearly as bad as in the UK. But, in the 70s there was the risk of Quebec separation and the breakup of the country, strikes and our economy was in recession, because it was tied so closely to the US and their war fatigued economy. Like you SW hit here with a bang and changed lives. As a kid I did not play "cowboys and Indians". I played STAR WARS. So it seems to me that the Lucasfilm marketing machine was always there for good or ill... it's just the market is that much more competitive with Potter, The Matirx, Spiderman, Batman etc... some of which has beaten Lucasfilm at their own game i think. As for you calling me a "twat" you kind of proved my point about the level of some talkback posts... not all, but some.
George Lucas Needs the Money Like ...
by Termigoonie
Jul 24th, 2008
02:06:18 AM
... a hole in the head. The guy has more money than he could ever count. I reckon (no data to back me up here) he spent at LEAST $150 to $200 million to develop an entire animation studio, plus probably another $80-$100 (minimum) on the movie, and probably $4-$6 million per episode. He doesn't have anyone backing that. It's his bucks. I'd love to see Cameron, Spielberg, Bay, Jackson, Nolan or any of those guys start paying for their own movies with their own money. But as long as Lucas does that, I figure -- it's up to him what to make. Besides, he keeps something like 3,000 people gainfully employed and frankly has done some pretty good things for the industry, as I pointed out earlier. So, where EXACTLY does all of this tedious hate come from? Or maybe you're just trying to impress everyone, the way that the bullies tried to impress their friends when they used to pick on you for being "weird"?

The hate comes from a simple place, disappointment in the prequels.

Anyone else remember the moment during TPM when you thought to yourself "Wow this isn't very good, in fact I'm bored and completely uniterested in these characters."? For me it was right after the pod race. Or that moment during AOTC when you laughed at how bad the dialogue was and then again became bored? Or that moment during ROTS when you thought "Yay, it isn't as awful as the other two!"?

Thats where my hate comes from.

Seriously, he goes on about doing his small personal films and so forth, but there's nothing. He's not even directing Red Tails. Even his mentor Coppola is doubting whether he is ever going to do his "art films". I was a staunch defender of his right until i saw indy 4. The greatness of the original star wars trilogy and american graffiti meant I was able to look past the utter rubbish that were the prequels. But after seeing indy 4 I can't defend him any longer. Even in a producing role, he's able to tarnish and destroy movies. Star Wars 3-D? Continue resting on your laurels and milking the cash cow you money grubber...

Oh and for whoever said they heard GL talk about this a couple of years ago (but somehow didn't read the actual story above which references the Showest screenings or that we've all heard the same thing as him ever since) and was talking about getting people back into the theatre, guess what? Mitsubishi's (or at least the Aussie company they stole it from) Laser HDTV can. Here in about 6 months or so.

Miyamoto, yes we did. But GL was annoyed people liked Tartakovski's cartoon more than his prequels in the same way as they liked Kirshner's Empire best, so he's wiping it away the same way he did with the original versions. Because he's not small, that way, at all.

Rickey remembers all too well seeing the first few minutes of "A New Hope" as a wee lad with his parents. It was being aired on network TV and for the commericals there were ads for womens' panyhose with the containers made to look like R2-D2. Odd stuff. Then it was bedtime and a grumpy Rickey was forced to stop watching and retire just as the movie shifted to Tatooine. A few weeks later, Rickey was at a birthday party and watched the entire movie in some kid's attic. Imagine, an entire group of kids crowded around a tiny television with shitty picture. Totally mesmerized.

Rickey's point is that no one gives a shit about how advanced technology or special effects in Star Wars has become. Just give us an honest to goodness space adventure and we're on board. It was the story that hooked us all in originally--the journey to amazing new worlds. And its just plain sad that Lucas has tossed all this aside in his quest for meaningless CGI spectacles. Bleh.

Trying to keep a flame alive, recapture the magic of old, and stay relevant in a world that has changed from when they were most significant as artists and cultural forces. Even if you don't like their music, you must admit the Stones were great in their time (into the 70s) and had a huge impact. I'd say the same for George, with his 90s-00s offerings being shallower, diluted versions of the classic stuff

Yea, I have seen the SW shop, and frankly, it sucks, nothing really great there, so if that is his legacy, it's been sold short. If the SW shop had a ton of cool stuff there, stuff you could not resist buying, I would agree with you. I can't though, I can't remember the last time I went to the SW shop and saw anything that I just HAD to get, aside form a collectible saber or tow, but thats it. With regard to free screenings...Despite the fact that Lucas may pay out of his own pocket for his projects, that doesn't give him the right to not charge. Theaters, distributors, they are all in it for the money. Unless Lucas builds his own chain of theaters, which ain't gonna happen, you won't see any free SW screenings.

Speaking for myself, I never stated that Lucas didn't want more money, I merely stated that money is not his sole motivation as a lot of people seem to think. Anyone, not just Lucas, who is wealthy, always wants more money, you can't fault anyone for that. I know if I was wealthy, I would want more, who wouldn't? But to say that money is his sole motivation is ridiculous. I am sure there are plenty of things he could do for more money, why he isn't doing them, well I don't know. I would like to see him take a risk and try to start a new franchise, because I think he has it in him to do something different, but I am not gonna hold my breath waiting either.

... how many of you here have actually seen any of this new STAR WARS 3D material?

I have.

The first scene I saw was the opening of SW: ANH. Inside the Blockade Runner, as the stormtroopers blast open the door and Darth Vader comes walking in for the first time. Keep in mind, I saw the film theatrically in 1977 and have seen it most likely over 100 times since.

And it felt brand new. The lasers whipping past my head. The smoke curling around Vader as he enters. The feeling of the Sith Lord approaching you. It was the closest thing I've had to the feeling of the very first screening since then, and I think fans will be shocked at what a strange and interesting difference it makes.

I also saw a sequence from EPISODE II, where Anakin jumps out the window and starts the chase scene across Coruscant. And that was dizzying because of the vertigo caused by the 3D. Again... great use of it, and it makes the sequence feel brand-new no matter how many times you've seen it.

I'm fascinated by these 3D retoolings of films. And wait till you see what LORD OF THE RINGS looks like. Gollum in 3D? Insane.

The only film I have seen in 3D recently was Superman Returns in IMAX. Did the SW films look something like that or different? I must admit, although the 3D Superman experience was somewhat novel - the last 3D film I saw in theatres was Space Hunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone - I found it distracting and hard to look at the whole frame... but perhaps I am just not used to the way an image is framed in 3D. That said, like you, I am curious about the 2D-->3D process. Do you know of any good sites that explain the process?

FUCK YOU LUCAS! You burned me with the o.g. trilogy; you know the SPECIAL Special Edition with Haden Christianson appearing at the end of Jedi. Hell, I took my little brother wanting him to have the same fun I had for the o.g. STAR WARS movies. But Nnooo! Lucas did it again and made a mess on Episode 1 and killed off the only good thing that came out of the prequels—Darth Maul! After Episode 1 my brother never cared for STAR WARS again, though he still like the trilogy, the precraps fucked want could have been for me and him. After the mistake of paying to see Episode 1, I never paid to see the rest. Now George “Darth 13-Chins” Lucas wants to 3D-ized movies that were never MEANT to be seen 3D. Fine go ahead. I learned my fucking lesson. I will never ever pay for anything STAR WARS again. The Star Wars universe is so rich that the fucker could have made so many spin offs just related to the war and not even have to be connect the the trilogy or precraps. But nope. Many have said it: your beating a dead horse to a pulp Lucas, but not just that your also trying to fuck it. Yes, there will be those “die-hard” fans that would see any fucking shit Lucas craps out and slaps STAR WARS on it. But now there is a growing army of Smart Fans that will not pay/see Hollywood or any stupid dumb fuck’s movie, when its not even worth it. Georgie, you’re as far, far away from sanity, as Uwe “Destroyer of movies” Boll and Michael “cocaine” Bay are close to making an Oscar winning movie together! Now KILLER CLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE and ATTACK OF THE KILLER TOMATOES—that’s something I will pay to see in 3D!
