The real Ninja in feudal Japan were really evil bastards. They were like the Nazi SS of their time. Things like slow painful poisoning and murdering babies were the NICER things that the ninja were pad to do. samurais for example. Yeah there were those that were murderers and assassins of innocent people but mostly they were assassinating people that deserved....so called "nobility" and such. We get the historical perspective of them being "bad guys" b/c the history we have of them comes from Japan itself where stealth and methods they used were considered dishonorable compared to the samurai's more open style of combat. But in truth they were the rebels of Japan like the Rebels from Star Wars. They worked with what they had...made weapons our of farm implements...weapons designed specifically for defending against samurai...and waged the only warfare they could...guerilla warfare against a "noble" culture so fucked up that to test his sword a samurai would call a peasant over so he could take a practice swing and if it didnt kill in one blow he knew it wasn't good enough to take into battle against other samurai yet. Yeah, so i'll take ninja anyday. They were heroes of feudal Japan as far as I am concerned. A few bad apples does not ruin the entire tree in this case.

Wowsah, you have ZERO idea what you're talking about. Do the research. Start with a search on the Bujinkan, the only authentic ninjutsu tradition left. You might learn that the real ninja of old Japan were quite analogous to the Native Americans and the position they found themselves in after the arrival of the Europeans. Dogmatic, thanks for chiming in with a little perspective. That said, there has never been a film made outside of Japan that has dealt with the authentic art(for instance, its unarmed combat techniques look nothing like karate or kung fu) or its history. This looks to be more of the same cartoon/video game/evil assassin bullshit.

I'm glad someone brought up the issue with the redundant title. I don't know much about the hierarchy of Ninja society, but I'm assuming there are some Ninjas who need to do the everyday jobs to support the Ninja Assassins, presumably there must be people like Ninja Postal Clerk, Ninja Guy at the McDonalds drive-thru window, Ninja Theater Usher, Ninja Proctologist and so on. I'd like to see the Wachowskis explore this aspect of the Ninja in this movie.

The title is only redundant if you are attributing the ninja with being an assassin, but if you are attributing the assassin with being a ninja it makes perfect sense. For example; "What kind of ninja was it? It was a Ninja assassin!" Would read as redundant but "What kind of assassin was it? It was a ninja assassin!" would not. Also, the title could refer to one who assassinates ninjas.

Fuck all the people who come into these talkbacks pretending to have watched Speed Racer but are really just making assumptions based upon the trailers and what they read at rottentomatoes. I don't give a fuck whether it only got 36% - that's only because people just didn't get it. Real vision goes over peoples heads sometimes. Remember, Blade Runner and Tron both got horrible reviews when they came out too. I thought the trailers for Speed looked like crap and because of my anger over the Matrix sequels, I was really hoping the movie would bomb. But then I saw it and I was blown away. It may not be the best movie I'll see this year, but I don't doubt it will remain the most daring and unique. I know that there are people who legitimately did not like the film and that is fine - everyone is entitled to their opinions... if they bothered to watch the movie. The thing is, I would bet good money that at least one out of every two Speed Racer haters in the AICN talkbacks hasn't actually seen it and is just a fucking liar.

Don't mean to be an asshole, but please tell me what is it that I didn't get. In MY opinion,SR's story wasn't that interesting, yes the first couple of minutes were really fun, specially with the tour of the company, and some of the races were cool even though they looked like Mario Kart on crack; but EVERYTHING took forever and seemed uninteresting: The whole corporate aspect was boring, the whole Asian guy and his sister subplot didn't interest me AT ALL and neither did the Beno Führman scenes as some sort of handler for Racer X. Matthew Fox was maybe the best thing in the movie, but then radical plastic surgery? come the fuck on. And I also wanted to kick the shit out of that annoying brat and his monkey. I used to really like the cartoon and went to se it with an open mind, but the whole time I was thinking that Dexter's Laboratory did a far better job adapting the source material in 20 minutes, that the Wachowskis did in 3 FUCKING HOURS

...JMS didn't come up with the "Selling your soul to Satan is better than getting a divorce" story line in Amazing Spider-man. That idea came from the Editor-In-Chief, Joe Quesada. Straczynski was the writer of the book at the time and did what he could to make the idea work. According to a couple of posts from JMS, whatever script he did turn in for the story was significantly reworked by Marvel before it saw print, so he isn't even fully responsible for what was published. The story was a misfire dictated from an office much higher than the one occupied by JMS. Now, I will lay most of "The Other" and "Sins Past" at JMS' feet. I kinda liked the Spider Totem stuff that JMS was doing with the book, but "The Other" was terrible. To me, "Sins Past" was unnecessary trash produced by a talented writer that should have known better than to write that $#!+. To be honest, as much as I like JMS' work, I consider most of his Amazing Spider-man run to be pretty bad.
