The last part was laughably bad, but the beginning ruled. Same with IT.

I have read that mamoth tomb 3 times, the unabridged recent version, and let me tell you that no comic book will come close to capturing all of the nuance and factors of that book. So my question is, why try?

I will give Mick Garris credit, I thought he got as close as we will probably ever get. To the dude that said it got worse, I hate to tell you but that was all the story. The split between good and evil, Mother Abigail leadin the chillin' to ColoRAYdo, and her ultimate prophecy telling the boys to go to Vegas on foot. Yep, that was all King, and I for one loved it, but that's just me, I think his work is awesome.

The casting for Stu Redman, Tom Cullen and Nick Andros was pretty damn inspired, imho. Jamey Sheridan as the walkin dude sucked ass, though, as did Laura San Giacomo as Nadine (among others). They were also hamstrung by being on network telly. Don't ask me why, and you all will prolly say i'm nuts for it, but i always pictured Dennis Miller in my head as Larry Underwood. Kooky, I know...

is to a 10 to 12 hour mini-series on HBO or Showtime...At least on one of those outlets, the story won't be hindered by "STANDARD AND PRACTICES" that regular network tv has to adhere to. You could have Stephen King write the screen play and on the shortlist to direct, i'd say Frank Darabont or Zack Snyder...As far as the walking dude is concerned - Nathan Fillion was born to play Randall Flag. If you don't believe me, then checkout his stint as Caleb on Buffy The Vampire Slayer beginning with the ep. Dirty Girls during the seventh season.

If somebody else did it, it featured a completely different cast, and it was done on cable. As it stands (heh) it was a disaster on par with King's abysmal Shining tv show. (You know it must just torture him to madness that Kubrick's film surpassed his book by such a tremendous degree that it all but mades the source material irrelevant.)

I mean we know Kings work can be done well if its in the right hands, and although Garris's adaptation is watchable, he dropped the ball too much-the crappy visions of mother abagail at the end, Flagg turning into a demon every five seconds for no reason and all that rubbish. I reckon they need at least two films to cover the story or a mini series of LOST style budget....and seeing as he has yet to fail King, I reckon Frank Darabont is the guy to do it (anyone who has seen the end of The Mist knows the guy can tackle apocalyptic devastation...and I mean DEVASTATION... that ending was a kick in the teeth for Tom Jane that Ive yet to see topped). Being a fanboy Ive also drawn up my ideal cast : Stu Redman: Nathan Fillion, Fran Goldsmith: Zooey Deschanel/Lizzy Caplan, Larry: Joaquin Phoenix (not really in Johnny Cash mode, but more strung out junkie mode), Nick:Jared Leto. Randall Flagg: Danny Huston, Nadine Cross: Janeane Garoflao (maybe?), Ralph Bretner: Jason Lee, Julie Lawrey: Evan Rachel Wood, Tom Cullen: Ethan Suplee....
also, would it be too much to ask Guillermo Del Toro...

the Stand?

As for casting the movie, I need to find a place for Jamie Sheridan's mullet. But I digress: Paul Bettany is Randall Flagg and I'd go the other way and cast Dwight Yoakam as Larry, because he's older and can be pretty jacked up and mean (Sling Blade)... but if it's got to be 'younger', throw Dave Matthews at it. I like whoever said Filion for Stu and . . . hang on . . . Ann Hathaway for Nadine.

I can see Bettany as Flagg, but he's almost too creepy looking...it would be hard to imagine him winning people over IMO. I'm still backing Danny Huston for The Walkin Dude....if he intensified some of his "charimatic yet bastard" work on The Proposition into "charismatic yet pure evil" I reckon he's there...though that mullet has to go. Just,.....get it out of there. And I would say I hate work, but I just graduated university last week, am heading off on holiday next week, and am trying to force myself to do some writing....I honestly cant complain :S

I like Bettany, but I would especially recast if any work would interfere with him playing Aloysius Pendergast in the adaption of the Preston/Child books. Huston's got that on/off switch from fun, 'hey, let's have a beer' to dear God, 'hey, don't disembowel me' thing.

It's make believe movie casting or TPS reports. All my ufc fantasy picks are done . . . so it's movie geek out time. yeah, but where "It" was the ultimate evil, "The Turtle" was this protective force of good as I recall...I dont remeber a giant turtle showing up, but I remember the turtle was some kind of bein that created universes or something and it reappared in The Dark Tower in some way...I dunno its been a while. Alhtough for Bettany supporters I suggest this-an "It" remake directed by Del Toro featuring Bettany as Pennywise...that would make my day, but it will never happen. and Forsakyn Ferrer was a high point of that series but hell, the guys a high point in everything he's in..even an already great show like Twin Peaks got better when he showed up-he truly is undervalued.
plus did anyone ever read the script for Romeros Stand adap?

the one by Rospo Pallenberg? He and George Romero got the plot diluted down to one film-its flawed but interesting...its on Subterrenean Cinema if anyone fancies a gander.

SPOILERS FOR IT AND DT!!! SPOILERS FOR IT AND DT!!! RockLobster800: When IT slings Bill and Richie (later) towards the deadlights, they see the Turtle. It represents 'creation' as IT mentions the Turtle 'vomited' the Universe. But when Bill sees it later as an adult, the Turtle seems to be dead and that breaks him so that Richie has to fight IT. As for the Turtle in DT, he's one of the Guardians, sharing a Beam with the Bear, Shardik. IN both DT and IT, the Turtle is mentioned in a poem, holding the world on his back. :-) Regarding the 'gangbang' in IT, it's later after the kids first fight IT. They get lost in the tunnels because they are 'breaking' up and loosing their memories/group strength. Bev 'takes' each of them into her to bring the group back together and they can find their way out.

Anyone notice how so many "gag" names on The Simpsons and Futurama are variations on "Namey McName"? Shiney McShine, Chesty McNagNag...

King = A guy who has written the same book about 35 times and changes the title. He peaked about 30, 35 years ago and is now all but unreadable. (Although I enjoyed CELL, as derivative as it was.)

Apparently there's one in the works, from SciFi. *shivers*

I thought Pennywise in the old miniseries was terrific, good ol' Tim Curry! Well anyway, as long as they keep the 'tween gangbang intact, they have my confidence.

I cant really say, seeing as Ive only read the exteneded version but from my understanding the normal cut is missing too awesome sequences-namely "The Kid" and our second encounter with Flagg where he tortures this delirious guy who was setting up his identity....I loved the exteneded cut so Id recommend it to anybody!
Kubrick vs. King

While Kubrick's "The Shining" was a great movie, as an adaptation, it failed. Kubrick is a artist with ideas and simply could not "bury himself" enough to let King's work shine (no pun) through. Dare I say it? Shining In Name Only.

I've not read the book "No Country for Old Men" but a friend tells me that the film is a straight adaptation of it. In his words, "McCarthy pretty much wrote that movie." Alas, two tries and we still don't have a good "Shining" movie. Oh well.

Um...that should read: "Kubrick WAS an artist with ideas..."
