I've read the comic twice but I still think this moving comic idea is great and makes me appreciate the comic even more so. I was going to message Harry about this last night. I hope they put this on the Watchmen dvd release. I mean not only this but we get the entire Black Freighter that will coincide with the Watchmen theatrical release too cool. I think the movie is going to rock. They have to cut out tons of stuff which will hurt it but I'm sure everything in the movie will be out of the book. I hate when they adapt things and add new stuff. Why take the time to add new stuff when you're leaving out the old stuff. Back to the moving comic, I too wish it had a full voice acting cast but oh well. It's free. I agree, kungfuhustler, Laurie's voice is hilarious.

I wonder if the whole point of this is so when people complain that the movie isn't close enough to the book, Snyder can say, "But look at this 100% accurate adaptation we also did that was draggy and coma-inducing! If you geeks prefer we can digitally replace our boobtacular Silk Specter with a chubby voice actor in his mid-30s working for scale, just like in the *more accurate* version! Is that what you want?" Then Zach will laugh and go back to the editing booth to decide whether the rape scene needs more slow motion or more music from the Batman & Robin soundtrack, or, possibly, both.

Don't get me wrong I have torrented stuff I cannot get and have backups for alot of Moores stuff too. (People DO like to borrow them it has to be said)BUT even with CDisplay etc. you simply can't beat the actual book to peruse at your pleasure and conveniance, taking in the artwork and all the detail at your own pace. I've found myself buying most of the great stuff I've found in torrent form.

For those who simply can't afford the book then I would say hey, this is better than nothing and a nice idea, but it's still second best.

I'm curious though, does Wall-Mart or any other Supermarkets stock much in the way of Comics and Graphic Novels ? I always assumed you would only find them either in Comic stores or Bookshops and from what I hear they are rapidly running out of Watchmen stock with the kind of Publicity the Trailer before TDK has given the book.

Go suck on Steve Jobs' dick somewhere else. iTunes is a shit program bloated way beyond being reasonable...I used to think Winamp had gotten overly huge and slow then I tried iTunes. As for Quicktime, it is a terrible codec because like iTunes it has become huge and unwieldy. As someone who works with video files all the time, I can tell you that next to RealMedia, Apple is the second worst thing to happen to media files. Why the fuck should I have to use a program like iTunes just to access a media file? You shouldn't.

I own the graphic novel, and have read it many times, but I think this is well done as well. My God are you all a bunch of picky, living in my parents basement, have no life, idiots!! Personally, I'd love to see more comics given this kind of treatment. Granted, I'd like to see a little more voice talent involved, but beyond that, I can't possibly comprehend why anyone who loved the book couldn't enjoy the hell out of this as well. Picky, picky, picky, unhappy, idiots, each and every one of you who complain about it!

Umm, Quicktime isn't a codec, it's a container format. The primary video codec Apple uses currently is h.264 for video; exactly what is it about h.264 you find to be crappy? As for why it requires iTunes, that would be because of the DRM involved (this watchmen file is a Protected MPEG-4 video file, for example). Take it up with the studios regarding the necessity to have DRM on video files. Either way, if you're going to complain about something, it is easier to take you seriously if you can be clearer about what you're complaining about (i.e. the necessity to use iTunes because the file is DRM'd), rather than referring to Quicktime as a "codec". Especially since you say you work video files "all the time", you would assume that you'd have a better understanding of what Quicktime is and isn't, what MPEG-4 is and isn't, what h.264 is and isn't, and what a codec is and isn't.

Considering how big h.264 and MPEG-4 have become, and the role Apple has played in popularizing them, I find it amazing to claim they are the second worst thing to happen to media files next to Realmedia. And although I do agree that iTunes has become bloated, it still essentially gets the job done, and I haven't seen it perform particularly slowly on my setup (Vista Ultimate, 2GB RAM, E6700 2.66GHz C2D.... hardly cutting edge these days).
It is a container that has almost become a codec in that...
by PervOmatic
Jul 20th, 2008
12:27:10 AM
Apple's use of it and how it is tied to their software makes almost one and the same. I'm really bitching about MPEG-4 being based on the Quicktime usage of the codec and now it is all pretty much one shitty ball of crap. I'm not going to break all that down for some guy like Teko who obviously wouldn't know those details. Yeah, I know that technically it isn't a codec but what with the overuse of containers these days the actual lines between codec and container is starting to blur. I have gotten into the bad habit of using codec as a catch all at this point.

Yeah, sure I want to. But because they're distributing it through iTunes, I bloody can't. So leave me alone!

Also, if you've ever had to compress a film you've made, you'll realise that h.264 is the best codec available. And then you'll realise that VLC is the best program to play your film.

But that would mean stop watching movies and start making them to care about them, so there's an issue :)

I'm a professional film and video designer. I know the ins and outs of h.264 and various codecs. But who gives two shits about codecs, we're talking about a distribution system - the iTunes Music Store - which streamlines the way studios can distribute their content. It's universal for 95% of people (in America, anyway; international distribution seems to have snags). The restrictions on downloading video files via iTunes in all non US territories (not sure what's going on with Canada even) is a little more than a snag, don't you think? Using a UK registered laptop IN the US I'm still prevented from accessing this content. Of course I could work around this but, come on, why should I have to go to extremes? And no, I'm not an Apple hater (used macs for years until the prices got so out of hand and the PC laptop broadly speaking caught up) but this smacks of poor business sense. Of course, that means it's almost certainly not Apples fault, more the decision of a bunch of brain-dead "suits" in Hollywood.

I was just curious as there are some great comic stores but they are by no means all that common everywhere.

And not to get dragged too far into the whole iTunes thing but some people (including me) don't think it's great software and is rather too bloated for it's own good. That's just personal choice and opinion. I also think XP is pretty unreliable shit at times and Vista needs far too much power to run smoothly. It's not a Mac V PC thing it's just some don't like the software.

Bruce Timm has been trying to get the green light on an animated Watchmen mini-series for a good ten years, but Warners kept vetoing him because of their attempts to get a live action film going. Gibbon's been game for a direct to video series, but Warners doesn't like the public seeing more than one version of a character (they took Aquaman out of Justice League because of the Mercy Reef show they wanted to do on the WB.)

Yeah, Itunes is great - unless you get music from anywhere but the Itunes store. Including CD rips. Then it sucks. Your cd rips are never in danger of being deleted by a future update. Stop with the paranoia. If Apple ever deleted your cd rips, customers would revolt. It's bad for business and Apple is out to make money after all. Cd rips stay in whatever format you rip them to. On the purchasing side of things, you don't have to buy music form the iTunes store, you can go to the stores, buy a cd and rip them at home, no worries. Why the hate?

Moore's name isn't on it because he doesn't want his name on it, or any other adaptations of his work. He asked for no credit and for his share of the Hollywood money to be given to the artist (it worked this way on V FOR VENDETTA as well). I don't argue your other points...but really, if this digital comic is the abortion you feel it is, isn't it better that Moore's name ISN'T on it?

Alan Moore has specifically requested that he get no credit in regards to all the new Watchmen stuff. As for "destroying Gibbon's work"...why not let Gibbon's decide that? After all, he is HEAVILY involved in all the stuff that Zac Snyder is doing with Watchmen. It might help to know what the hell you're talking about before you start condemning.

Why are people pissed off about this thing? Do you honestly think that Joe Fratboy is going to give a shit about this? They made this little tease for us for fucks sake. It's free, didn't cost you shit, adds some slight motion and voicing to what is essential scenes taken straight out of the comic. Christ, some of you nerds are never happy.

I know that this movie is going to bomb, and I think, in someways, Snyder knows that as well. Would you look at what he's giving us? An animated Black Freighter story, these little animated comics, and a Watchmen movie that clearly follows at least SOME of the original graphic novels plotline.

Seriously, would you be happier if they just gave it the Van Helsing treatment?

Yeah, it's all pretty clearly for the fans. Even if it sucks, the graphic novel is right there on my shelf. Worst-case scenario, it'll be a long time before someone else tries to make a bad movie out of it. Snyder has obviously parlayed his box-office successes into making his dream project. We'll all have to see how it comes together. The digital comic was an interesting experiment but came off kind of corny, I felt. Reminded me of those book-and-record sets I used to have, where they'd take a Spider-Man comic and do a full-cast audio. Only here it's one guy. That was kind of a goofy choice.
Aint it stolen from Entertainment Weekly News.

The lack of a female voice was a little jarring at first. Still, I thought the animation was fun. Reminded me a lot of some of the weird cartoons from Mtv's Liquid Television in the 90's. Ultimately, it's just supposed to be a light diversion. Obviously, the movie is going to be polished and I'm willing to bet the Tales of the Black Freighter cartoon will be pretty badass.

That said, they'd better not wait months after the theatrical edition dvd launch and the special version with the black freighter stuff worked in. If they try and make me buy two copies they're going to find themselves disappointed.

Uh, not needing iTunes? In fact, I'll just give it a pass until it crops up in AVI somewhere when I can see it in convenient, non-bloated Media Player Classic or, in a pinch, VLC.

Just take the space out of the URL above and it'll work. The number should be 1640477. :)
