even with the sound off, the teaser was OK as far as "Exterior - Desert; Day" shots go. If the leaked travesty ending is a hoax (and hopefully it is - or I predict a riot), we could have a fine post-apocalyptic Terminator movie come 2009.

for a change as long as it's done right, the night scenes made by cameron are hard to top, so im willing to give McG a chance on daylight And the suit has a nice detail, look at the boot, he's holding it together with some kind of Rubber band, cool! the future soldiers should look kinda poor and like they are trying to make due with what they can find in a desolated world

that's a good lesson retained from Aliens or Starship Troopers: lasers aren't menacing. Or even badass.

However, I wonder how some pre-war rifle can magically harm a T-800 endoskeleton after Judgement Day. Hope they adress the issue with some badass-yet-trivial bit of geek stuff.

Is Christian Bale in this film for a great deal? The last I heard he was a minor character that would build to a larger role in sequels. I know he is john connor I just don't know the extent he is actually in the film. Saving him for sequels is kind of wishful thinking in my mind. I think you'd need him in there to guarantee a sequel. so if anyone knows please post, thanks.

so I for one am glad they went for the good actor (perhaps to butter up the fans, but still...) rather than the "action hero". He is excellent as Bruce Wayne/Batman so there's no reason he wouldn't bring some tough guy attitude to JC.

were not box office successes. I know they weren't trying to be, but still, in terms of carrying a movie that makes a ton of money, I still stand by my statement. Bale is a fine actor, but lacks the charisma to carry a non-iconic role. Outside of Batman, what's his most successful film, financially?

was very stupid. Christian Bale can't carry a movie on his own? Asshole, this guy is just starting out (as a star, not as an actor), and his most recent starring role is going to make over $100 million in one weekend.

Furthermore, the argument could be made that John Conner is a character with a similar built in audience, albeit not as large a one.

you can't count Batman as a Christian Bale movie
by Magic Rat
Jul 19th, 2008
12:16:08 AM
It's not. Batman Begins was a success because it was a more serious take on the story. Christian Bale didn't make the movie any better or worse with his performance. The Dark Knight isn't even his movie - it's Heath Ledger's, and from what I've read, to a lesser extent Aaron Eckhart's. Bale just happens to be the title character in a movie with people much more interesting than him.
IMO, his best role in a film was as that magician in The Prestige, because he played a less-charismatic stage performer to Hugh Jackman, which was actually true, considering Bale is the better actor, but a less charismatic one.
I'm only speaking of his potential boxoffice marketability, not his acting skills. Bale is a fine actor with less charisma than you'd like for a leading man in an action film - same goes for Edward Norton.
True, Magic Rat, Bale isn't

Will Smith -- all smiles and charm. Bale is more brooding and serious, but that doesn't mean he can't carry a film; he's been carrying films since he was thirteen. In Empire of the Sun he was Dakota Fanning with a cock (as I believe Variety presumptively called him.)

Slkboxrman, if you like cut-aways before bullet hits or soldiers talking like sewing circles then take your PG-13 action films. I have higher standards.

McG made "Charlie's Angels" He also made "We Are Marshall" I know nobody gives two *%$#('s about Marshall University because it's a small school and it's in West Virginia. This is fact. However, most of the people I talk to who lived in Huntington, think this is a damn good movie. I am one of them. He knows tragedy. Terminator, at it's highest level, is a tragedy...one involving all of mankind. It will work.

Seriously, this film is looking better and better by the day. I was flabbergasted that McG was the top choice for the job, but now I've seen the trailer and heard bits of the story - and now seen Bale in action - I can safely say that I'm there on opening weekend. The one thing we've always wanted to see was the future wars. I remember just before T2 came out and I'd heard Cameron's script originally had a 45 minute sequence in the future, but this got cut back due to budget contraints. So now, finally, we're gonna get to see the future in all its post-apocalyptic glory!

Christian Bale better watch out now that he's on top of the world. Fanboys love to knock down the people they praise after the fact. OH YEAH! It's human nature, but Fanboys seem to excel. Once Bale has left Batman behind him I'll be reading posts like he is a hack or overrated. How I love Fanboys. And for the new Terminator film. Rock on! Can’t wait to see it. And I love the TV show as well so there fatboy…errrrr…I mean Fanboy. And yes! Both can exist at the same time and no they don’t have to have storylines in common. Please Allow Me To Share With You How Much I Hate T2
by LaserPants
Jul 19th, 2008
07:59:20 AM
Just kidding, even I'm sick of talking about how much I hate T2: OLD YELLER / WE WUV WOO ROBODADDY.

Bale looks weirdly like Trent Reznor does now in that picture. Kinda fits the whole apocalypse war thing pretty cool I think. I also think theres a lot of potential here. If done right, it could be a really cool movie. Also, I'm glad that they're changing stuff because the actual time-line is completely fucked at this point that it would be better to just start from scratch and reboot it. I mean, cmon, face it, at the end of the day, its a movie about a future war with evil robots; its not brain surgery, it just has to be cool and scary and mean. If TDK is any indication, cool and scary and mean is certainly possible at PG-13. Hard-R is better, of course, but we're not gonna get that, so, may as well stop whining about it. R, on the other hand, is still possible.

Anyways, I'm intrigued by the idea, and I think it could be very cool.

Come on, TDK proves that a film can be PG-13 yet be more frightening than most of the cheap-scare R bullshit that's out there nowadays. It takes real skill to make a PG-13 film scary, since there are more restrictions placed upon the film by the MPAA. Nolan was able to do it? Will McG be able to? Oh, and by the way, Bale is quickly becoming this generations biggest actor. He's one of my favorites, for sure, because he doesn't take bullshit projects. Nearly everything this guy has been in has been top notch. And for those of you who haven't seen it, go rent 'The Machinist' right fucking now!

Thankfully, you are in the minority with respect to T2 which, by any quantifiable standard, was one of the BEST sci-fi movies of the last 30 years...As for this one, Bale gives me hope, but McG simply is not a visonary director (so far) - he's competent...just like Mostow was competent - look how that turned out.

About "We Are Marshall"
by Yaw
Jul 19th, 2008
10:57:16 AM
My parents and I have very different standards for movies but there are definately those perfect films that overlap: Lynch's "the Straight Story," "Looking for Bobby Fischer," etc. They are a predominantly PG-13 crowd. But I decided I would give "We Are Marshall" a try; and it was quite stunning. McG's "Charlie Angels" films were pop-culture exploitation films: big and empty pot-smoke filled heads of grin and shine. The young man can direct actors and he showed me that and T3 will definately be an actors' film. The violence and explosions are part of that world but if you don't have your Bison's realizing that their entire life's work is the cause of the world's destruction or Linda Hamilton's prophetic warrior/mother (her change from the first to the second is the heart and defense of the sequel, that life continues and that the first film had consequence: she is a bombed out, tense piece of wire in that movie, an emotional weapon), then the movie is all flash and fire. McG's subtle handling of characters in "We Are Marshall" were loving creations and not merely caricatures of entertainment. That movie could have been "Remember the Titans" and was not (quick note: I believe that "Remember the Titans" is an insult to the intelligence, a movie about race that resides almost SOLELY in stereotypes and audience expectations; I grew up in a racially tense environment and that movie was a cheap attempt at inspiration for the sake of a safe buck - movies about race MUST challange the audience: see Spike Lee (and dudes, Lee has empathy for Mookey, but he doesn't agree with him, ie Ruby Dee's anguished scream, a spine-tingling moment). I also resonant with the previous talkbacker's sentiment that it was a truly-felt film about mourning. It was about what it was about, a trick that many young directors in a financial/artistic environment cannot accomplish due to the flood of commercial expectations. Personally, I feel that it is wonderful that a director can correct past mistakes by appreciation and reappraisal of his work; and think how difficult it must be to attempt something heartfelt when there are several million online mouths spouting how this project is doomed to fail.

So we loose Arnold. But bagging Bale is a huge move and he can make or break the success of the film. Cause sadly, he's gotten into a very detailed pre-story and any small misstep will be placed on his head. Not blaming him for taking the paycheck though. Just sad that if it sucks, no one will bla,e the writers or directors as much as him.

Has nobody but me seen that movie? If so, rent it in spite of the Chuck Norrissy "no man left behind" looking cover art. Give Bale a good part and he's off the hook. Give him a mediocre part and he's at least solid. Good casting choice. And I think you can do this movie without Arnold as well if you use toaster style hard ass terminators. Remember, the first terminators looked like robots, then robots covered in rubber, then covered in living skin, then liquid metal. I want to love this.

And so will the cash-in follow ups. They screwed the pooch in T3, and did it in a way that completely fucks up the franchise. Not only that, the ideas behind this one sound like complete ass. And Arnold's role being recast? They'd have done much better with CG Arnolds.

All The Dark Knight proved is that a movie studio can pay enough cash to the MPAA and get a PG-13 rating. The Dark Knight shouldn't have been PG-13. It's too intense for kids and no to mention they can't follow alot of it. PG-13 Terminator? Well hopefully they are shooting an R rated movie and it'll get TDK treatment. This is growing on me though, Bale as John Connor is a great choice. The trailer was cool. Getting my hopes up for a goodie.

Terminator is on tv right now and damn it looks so dated with all the 80s fashion and cheap music... but its more violent than I remember at least, its been a long time since I seen it! T2 didnt suck, Robert Patrick was awesome but Arnie's Wussinator was lame as fuck... I preferred T3, the kickass industrial crane chase and Kristanna Loken ruled, too bad she hasnt done shit since, Painkiller Jane was so bad!
Terminator As Protector In T3 vs. T2

Yeah, sure he was a protector in T3, but he wasn't a father figure. Nobody wept for him like some wuss emo taint licker. Nobody put him to death in a manner eerily similar to OLD YELLER. He was just a machine doing a job in T3; there was no over emoting, no emotional connection AT ALL, and that's why its infinitely cooler and more bad ass then the weepy ass emo wankfest bullshit of T2.

Why is John Conner holding what looks to be like a M-16/M-4 Carbine (gas operated) machine gun that fires a .223 round... when it was ineffective against the Terminators in all of three movies? Shouldn't John Conner be using a "phased-plasma rifle in the forty watt range?" A picture of the rifle from Terminator II -- http://perso.orange.fr/mdi/ima ges/bckgrd/bckgrd_big/terminat or_004.jpg

It mocks the very art of film itself with its near godlike suckitude. I almost suspect Cameron made it suck on purpose because he was angry that people didn't like his underwater cgi movie about the giant hole in the ocean where the Close Encounters ship crashed (apparently) that also sucked. It is not only the nadir of the series, it is the nadir of film itself. It is the nadir of existence. The anti-matter of everything good in this universe we call home.

that is indeed a m-16/m-4 in the movie...it just adds to the lack of detail. Weeks ago...the artwork of the desolate..shell of a city...with vines and trees didn't make any sense. Connor's death
by Larry Sellers
Jul 20th, 2008

So...he HAS to die, right? The time progression described by the terminator in T3 implies that everything that we KNOW to happen in these films is inevitable. Connor HAS to die in some way or another, just as Skynet launched its attack regardless of Cyberdyne being blown up. But then doesn't that also mean Connor HAS to send Reese back in time at some point? I always found the timeline confusing, but now especially after 3...It'll at least be interesting how the proposed new trilogy will end. Which by the films' logic will have to end with Reese being sent back to protect Sarah. GAH help.

you are way off. Allow me now to rehash everything I've ever said about Bale. When I heard he was going to be Batman I knew that he would own the movie because it would be a step down for him because of Equilibrium. That movie is not original. Take 1984, splice it with Fahrenheit 451, and throw in a splash of Brave New World, and there you have it. That aside, it is an awesome movie and Bale destroys everything in site. I can't recommend this movie enough to people. Judge for yourself, but see it first, then make the call.

but Chernobyl was just a mere release of radioactivity into the environment. As the T2 script states, "The skyline of buildings beyond has been shattered by some unimaginable force like a row of kicked-down sandcastles. The skyline of buildings beyond has been shattered by some unimaginable force like a row of kicked-down sandcastles. Wind blows through the desolation, keening with the sound of ten million dead souls. It scurries the ashes into drifts, stark white in the moonlight against the charred rubble." It's obvious at the end of T3 - nuclear missiles were hitting major cities/facilities. My whole frustration with this franchise was primarily with the 3rd movie, most of the comics and the stupid TV show. Okay - Very simple. In the first movie, Reise says that SKYNET had built the time machine and had send back 1 T-800 terminator. We have to assume he was wrong because low and behold - there's the T-1000 in T2. I forgave that because of this... James Cameron created a timeline and concept that if the Terminator could alter the timeline by going back, then the Conners could alter it by destroying the Terminator - since T2 had created its own paradox. At the end of T2 (at least on DVD) the world changed and got better. Then, along comes T3 (minus Cameron) and we're told this philosophy is wrong - because they didn't stop it, couldn't stop it and the world is going to Hell anyway. The TV series and comics I'm mad at, because - Just HOW MANY of thos e FUCKIN' things can SKYNET keep sending back!?! You wanna' out smart the humans, skynet? Send Marty McFly back to break up Sarah's parents in the 60's!! Jeez WJ

"But then they sent in the terminators, the infiltrator units...they were the worst..the 600 series had rubber skin, we spotted them easily. But the first of the 800 series were fucking 65 feet tall. I mean I've seen some tall people but no one I ever remember being over 12 feet tall much less 8 feet. Shit, my friend Hank is like almost 7 foot but 65 feet? Fuckin' A! Seeing a 65 foot fucking robot pretty much guaranteed it wasn't a human being, and thus not an infiltrator unit, unless of course your a complete jackass or something."

Even with a total bugfuck of the lore and timeline, I can almost give Nostradomus like prescient-prediction that there is no 65-foot tall T-series robot. The T-series were terminators, infiltrators; designed to pass as closely to a human in order to run special ops missions (to stop the Resistance and Connor). The big robot is not remotely a terminator...I bet even McG knows you can't make a freakin infiltration unit out of a king kong sized robot...what the fuck can you infiltrate when you're a god damn 65 foot tall giant?

Bale is the Man, but McG ... I Don't Know ...
by thegrayghost
Jul 21st, 2008
05:31:33 PM
Bale is the ONLY reason I'm eager to see this movie. I hope McG doesn't just make some big CGI summer movie spectacle with a bunch of lame one liners and explosions. You know, the kind of movie you watch only once and walk out of the theater disappointed, wishing Cameron had done another T-movie. Anyone know how much of the effects will be practical vs CGI? Please use modeling and practical effects as much as possible. CGI just does not work unless it is intermixed with old fashion effects. If McG can somehow capture some that HUMAN DESPERATION that Cameron/Kyle Reece showed us and hinted at in The Terminator, and then be able to push the limits of effects and action-staging like in T2, this new movie will be gold. Is McG that ambitious or talented though? Or he is just a typical studio pleasing sellout? If those T-600s start to get chopped down like they were nothing, I'm walking out of the theater. Just ONE of those terminators should be able to take out a whole squad of soliders with ease. Yes, they are suppose to be that badass and scary. Remember how cold-blooded, raw, and methodical, Arnold was in that 1st movie? To make them any weaker would make this movie laughable at best. In this future, the terminators are suppose to be winning until John Conner comes along to organize the scattered humans, giving them a fighting chance. I hope McG actually tries to explore what would REALLY happen if the terminators took over, i.e. the superpowers like (USA, China, Russia), world religions, militias, terrorists/fanatics, 3rd world countries, "regular citizens," people who live in remote parts of the world, etc. How much of that infrastructure would survive after a nuclear fallout? How would people find food/shelter? What social/economic order would exist if any? Climate/environmental/geologic al change? I really doubt everyone would all of a sudden work under Conner without question. No one even knows who John Conner is. Please do not steal ideas from the Matrix about harvesting. I'm not sure what that is all about, but I hope he actually has a creative and interesting idea. The future is suppose to be horrific and desperate. The terminators devastation of the civilized world should be complete. They controlled the nukes in the USA, so how did Russia react? China? Did they infiltrate their systems as well? It'll be interesting to see how EXACTLY the terminators took mankind down in one day/week in a way that makes sense. Also, please keep the story and the tone consistent with the 1st 2 terminator movies. This 1st movie should focus on John Conner and the forming of/beginning of the resistance. I'm curious and looking forward to how they will approach the Kyle Reece character. I hope McG treats Reece with respect and somehow have cameos from Linda Hamilton, Michael Biehn (perhaps time travelling made him younger), and Arnold. If 2/3 of that group does not show up, it'll be hard to take this new franchise seriously. I hope this new trilogy opens up a whole new realm of ideas, themes, mythology, and characters we will actually care about, yet be respectful to the material. I hope it's not just a 2D story of John Conner and a bunch of nameless/soulless resistance fighters trying to save a bunch of caged humans and blow up Skynet. Have McG consulted with James Cameron at all? I mean, it was Cameron's vision in the 1st place.

Haha ... great point. They really need to get a handle on that time traveling/timeline thing. To simply sh!t on it and say hey, the average moviegoer will accept it, would be a mistake. I hope McG and his writers will think it through logically and make this latest entry fit somehow. Something must of happened after Reece went into the time machine. Either it wasn't destroyed or there are more than one ... why wouldn't there be more than one? Something interesting to explore in this new franchise hopefully.
