At the very least, Aronofsky's name attached pretty much GUARANTEES that this will 1) carry a hard R-rating, and 2) retain the caustic social commentary that distinguished the original.

Miller barely wrote Robocop 2 and 3
by Funketeer
Jul 17th, 2008
08:36:00 PM
Most of what he wrote didn't make it to the screen. The experience is what swore him off Hollywood until Rodriguez was able to get him to do Sin City. What most fanboys REALLY ignore is that Robocop 2 was directed by Irvin Kershner, the man credited with the creative success of The Empire Strikes Back. Funny how he gets a pass while people will look for any chance to dump on Miller.

meanwhile there are lots of flashbacks and inner turmoil about man and machine, blah blah blah.

This project will greatly benefit both parties. It will give Arronofsky a chance to showcase his talent and creativity, and to revitalize his career... which needs a bit of a boost after the Fountain. And it will give a much needed new direction to the Robocop franchise, and probably result in a better film for the series than any that have come before.

I hope they can convince Weller to don the suit again, if this is a sequel set 20 years later then the ageing won't be a problem.

The film needs the dark satire, the over-the-top gore and the lawless streets of Detroit (now Delta City?). But most of all it needs to remember that the core of the story was always the tragic story of Murphy and his isolated life if that suit.

Aside from the one scene in Robocop 2 where Murphy interacts with his wife none of the sequels have managed to "get" the tragedy of Murphy's situation (although I thought the oft-derided TV series did a fantastic job with this aspect). I hope this film can remember that. (And by TV series I don't mean that fucking awful Prime Directives mini-series).

I don't like the sound of moving it to LA, but I do like the idea of an older Robocop, and seeing how the years of isolation have treated him.

It's just a pity they can't hire Basil Poledouris. I hope they acquire the rights to do a Superman Returns-esque score which reuses all of Poledouris themes.

by Caerdwyn
Jul 18th, 2008
06:42:43 AM
I've heard Miller penned Robo 2 and 3. I've also heard his scripts were chopped up to hell and back and it turned him cold toward Hollywood for years, so yeah, let's not dwell on Miller and Robocop. Let's also remember that compared to Robo 3, Robo 2 is a masterpiece, so we shouldn't rag on Kershner too hard. Poor Robo has had a troubled past and any form of reboot/sequel needs to be PERFECT. Given the track record of one great flick, one mediocre, and one downright disgusting, a reboot is... well... hmm, it worked for Batman. Nolan has mopped up Schumacher's mess right nicely. Don't reboot, but a slick "20 years later" sequel could revive the franchise, if only for one flick.

One thing about ED209 and Robocain
by successor
Jul 18th, 2008
07:13:58 AM
I really like the first Robocop and the second is all right. But one thing always bothered me. Why give ED209, the first failed Robocop 2 prototype and Robocain live ammo for an ordinary demonstration? Isn't that just asking for trouble? I know, I know, the scenes wouldn't be cool if they couldn't shoot people to pieces. But what company in their right mind would load these things with real bullets? It would be like loading a tank with live shells for a military expo. Think of all the lawsuits people would bring in real life. Of course this is a movie, so who gives a shit, right?

Bloody Disgusting has NO source at all on their website for this article. This could be just plain bullshit to bring hits to their website. I remember Dark Horizons had this really awesome summery for the what was supposed to be "Pink Panther 10," back when it wasn't none if the next Panther film was going to be a prequel/sequel/remake. What happened? A streaming pile of shit remake with Steve Martin and Beyonce. That's what. I'm not staying calm till I see something OFFICIAL from MGM that this is indeed a sequel rather than a remake. I hope BD is right though.
Hey, at least it isn't a remake.

In R2 he presses the button on the remote, and think in R1 Ed automatically turns itself on to be armed. Plus that was intentional, Dick Jones is a total cunt. Aronofsky sounds really different but im betting hes fukn gone b4 it starts shooting. Secondly im imagining bjork robot humanity trip out, also his camera trick will be used yet again. Speaking of which, they used it in Lost series 2. It sounds fucked, but the movies gonna be fucked anyway. Why waste your breath. Theres only one robocop and that was 1987, Verhoeven, lapsed censorship laws and blood packs from hell. Plus, mother fukn best boardgame ever, NUKE EM

But in my opinion it should have been shot in Detroit. A big film shoot there could have really helped their economy. I also think that LA is overused. And Aronofsky has a lot of work to do to regain my respect after the train wreck that was The Fountain. He needs to take a cue from Chris Nolan. If you're reading this Aronofsky...Watch Dark Knight as many times as possible. Learn from it.

Bottom Line
by fassbinder79
Jul 18th, 2008
09:42:02 AM
Verhoeven's film is a masterpiece. Nothing Aronofsky could do to top it. Especially if he's shooting it in LA. But he could pull off doing a really good sequel. But The Fountain was terrible so I don't know. If this had been his follow up to Requiem then maybe I would be excited. But after The Fountain I am hesitant to put faith in anything Aronofsky does from here on out. But in all fairness a sequel isn't inappropriate...Just not a remake of the first one. That would be blasphemy.

I got the impression that Murphy had regained his memory and humanity .He'd stopped acting like a machine etc.So WTF was the deal , when the second one starts with him , back to being an emotionless , robo again.Besides which they made a total dick of him in that movie! The first one was cool as it was an origin story. But ever since theres been nowwhere to go .The non human Robo is just boring.Plus the total loss of ultra violence just killed it.I remember in the tv series , he'd sight up on someone , and then instead of shooting off the guys ballls...sight on the leg of a wardrobe and shoot that , so it fell on the villians head , knocking him out or some silly shit!!!.

you didn't understand it's straightforward sci-fi premise. The smartest man on earth invents immortality just as his wife dies.Obsessed and unable to let go of that moment-he lives for perhaps hundreds of years-obsessed with ending a story she was writing.A story that parralels his own life-there's more to that but basically he lives long enough until he has the technology to finish his story by driving a spaceship(the most advanced ever invisioned)to his final destination. It's a straight forward scifi movie that goes over alot of heads-I haven't seen it in awhile so I might have screwed up details but it makes you think so I love it.Also robocop was murphy in the sequel-everyone called him murphy-his character was still developing nicely when robocop 3 shut it down.
I also enjoyed The Fountain.

Good sci-fi is hard to find these days. Why bash a film that's an original story and is actually smart. In between Requiem and Fountain I heard a million rumors about what Aronofsky's next film will be. Robocop would be interesting but somehow I doubt it will get made.

Aronofsky doing RoboCop 4 instead of bringing Flicker to the big screen. Such a great fucking book, full of subliminal film techniques, and a script adapted from the source material by Jim Uhls. SOMEBODY understands the Fountain! Most people think the "space" scenes are not real, or not happening, or some other stupid dumb fucking idiotic interpretation. Its so obvious that at the end he's hell bent on discovering immortality, and the future him is the result of that. Its so simple and yet so few people get it. I swear to god people are just getting dumber by the second.

L.A. Makes a Hideous Backdrop
by _Maltheus_

Whenever a movie or television show decides to relocate back to L.A., it never seems as good to me. Judging by what I see on the screen, L.A. has got to be the ugliest place on the planet (or they don't ever film the nice parts). It doesn't even have the character of a shithole. It's just a sprawling mess of an overused location. Either way, I don't think this will be made. And it would have to be getting a shitload of positive buzz before I'd even consider seeing it. Robocop worked for me as a kid, not so much anymore. Except of course, the "bitches leave" line.

Sequel, yes! But Mr. Weller? Fantastic idea, but aging *might* be a problem, as Murphy's RC "face" was apparently some sort of plasticised replacement, not his own face, so technically it wouldn't age. But fuck I'm being pedantic - Weller *was* RoboCop, not Burke, Eden or Fletcher, so bring him back for that reason alone.

This may come as a shock, but I understood the story just fine, and *gasp*! hated it anyway.

The Fountain actually made me angry, it offended me on a deep level, and I'm a huge sci fi nerd. I pray for good, intelligent, high production value sci fi stories, and that's why the Fountain was such a knife to the eye. It was a joyless, pseudo-abstract wank fest with very little care put into actually telling the goddamn story (which wasn't that complicated, just poorly rendered), with simple structure sacrificed on the wankerish altar of half-baked artsy shit. I love arty films, if done well, but this one reeked of inauthenticity, a hollywood director watching true artistic film and between blasting rails saying "It can't be that hard, I could do that shit. snort!" It was a FAILURE as a film, a failure as a two-hour piece of entertainment, a waste of talent and effects budget, and a multi-million dollar, incomprehensible love letter from Darren Aronofsky, to Darren Aronofsky.

Fuck the Fountain, fuck it in its cheap tawdry ass.
