Forget about magazine covers and photo shoots of the characters, as the people doing them ARE NOT the same people doing the movie. Hence, different lighting and mood. (Snyder would be too busy to overlook photo shots like these). That said, this cover is nice.

Morgan looks fucking perfect...FUCKING PERFECT! as the Comedian, I always saw him as Ron Pearlman but not anymore. I don't like Ozymandias's mask but I don't think he wears it much, if at all, in the actual story. Whoever designed this cover knows they're watchmen too, this is almost a literal translation of one of the few "team shots" of the modern group of characters. Doesn't look like an original cast photo as much as a mass photoshop job done using some publicity kit materials. I think its a definite 180 from the visual awe of the trailer.

Actually, this reminds me of EW's cover featuring the cast of the first X-Men movie back in 1999, with the cast in full costumes and makeup. That looked pretty fucking atrocious and amateurish as well (yea it wasn't that great on film either, but still).

Yes, Veidt is a god unto himself in his world, but he's also supposed to be a man of great taste and the whole point of his Ozymandias outfit was that it reflected classical sculpture and the like. I believe he thought of his image as something like Greek sculpture or Michelangelo's "David."
I just don't understand......
by Ishkabibble
Jul 17th, 2008
09:32:00 PM
Visually, everything is just so spot-on....except Adrian Veidt. Nothing against Matthew Goode - I thought he was fine in "Match Point" - but Snyder's Ozymandias just looks wrong. And I was thinking that even before this EW cover made him look freakish. Goode's only 30, so he's too young for Veidt, for starters. But setting that aside ... I accept that the purply tunic and gold accoutrement from the comics probably didn't translate well to live-action, but still, they couldn't do any better than this? I mean, they made changes to Dan and Sally, but they still have the flavor of their comic analogues. Veidt? Not so much. Still time for reshoots, Zack!
The photos seem so goofy...

..but the trailer was so awesome. Even the character reveal pics they gave us looked cheesy. Some of them look spot on, but others like Oz are a lost cause... I don't think there's ANY way you could've made him look decent without completely abandoning the source material(something I don't think they intend on doing). I think the thing I'm most curious about is how this film will be perceived. It definitely gives a much more serious vibe than Sin City/300/The Spirit, but I'm curious to see if that's how the average moviegoer will perceive it as.

He's supposed to look like Robert Redford. Obviously Redford is too damn old to play him now, but they should have gotten someone to exude that sort of presence. Look closely at the comic- that's Robert Redford. Classy, intelligent, dignified, worldly. I don't know who the fuck Matthew Goode is, but he's no Redford.

I am hoping Snyder had a very good reason for the casting - perhaps this guy will turn out to be a great actor, but just from first impressions he does indeed look too boyish/weak/fragile... Many have said it, but Ozy is Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and a young Redford all rolled into one. He's the good looking guy who everyone loves and nobody suspects... even if they couldnt afford Pitt or Cruise, go with the next down and get Jackman, Bale or Mortensen...

...correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't Doc Manhattan the only one of them with *real* superpowers in the comic, Viedt was as old as the others and had merely kept himself in peak physical shape. If Viedt is going to be younger in the movie then they have either moved around the timeline or he has "non aging" powers in the movie.

Doc Manhattan looks fucking awesome. Nite Owl kicks ass (which maybe he shouldnt, but it looks great to me - im hoping we at least get a scene of him either squeezing into or taking off the costume and not being in too great a shape under all the armor), Rorscach enough said - all in all, I think it's 80-90% looking like a home run for fans of the comic who don't mind a few things being tweaked. The only potential disaster for me is how they deal with the ending, I hear it has been changed, but does anyone know how exactly?

Last year at comic con they mentioned they went for younger actors to play the main leads because it was easier to age them through make up then get older actors and try to make them look younger in flashbacks. Viedt isn't looking too good but the rest look pretty good..I'm hoping it's a good movie
badboymason - re: Veidt's youth
by DennisMM
Jul 17th, 2008
10:51:59 PM
While Veidt in the GN had no powers, per se, he was supposed to be a sort of ideal man. He worked out, meditated, ate right, exercised body and mind, but he had an advantage. Moore didn't explain this in the story, but the bonus material in the Absolute the Graphitti editions suggest Veidt is a mutant in the true sense. He has, for unknown reasons, a trait his parents did not and the larger population does not - a much higher physical and mental potential. The notes - originally a list - read "Thunderbolt (Ozymandias): 10x human intelligence; young 37 will live to 150; Redford, Kennedy; popular celebrity; rich; perfect; loner; 'prescient' through intelligence; sees world as organism with him at centre." He must work at staying fit and keeping his mind sharp and remaining rich, but for him it's about as difficult as a jog around the block and writing an email are for a typical human.
badboymason - the ending
by DennisMM
Jul 17th, 2008
10:55:09 PM
From the last script I saw, by Alex Tse, the primary change is that the "extradimensional alien" does not "accidentally" appear in NYC to shock the world out of its war fever. Instead, Veidt kills millions around the world with a simulation of Manhattan's powers.

I actually read that for Manhattan, Crudup was in a motion capture suit and had about 150 motion balls on his face. He's quoted as saying that he had to keep referencing a picture for his facial performance, and if he caught sight of his reflection, the illusion was crushed. All in all, I thought the trailer was about the best geek-fest I've had all year!!! Can't wait of next March!. And I hope they release that comicon footage for those of us unlucky to go. *hint hint*

I didn't panic about the new costume designs, and the minutemen-era photo from awhile back was a home run as far as I'm concerned. But this cover just looks awful. Nite Owl looks like he's made of cheap plastic, and the less said about Ozymandias the better. Everything about him looks shifty and his expression suggests nothing except life-threatening constipation. Rorsarch and Doc Manhattan look solid, but if these are the publicity stills they've chosen for the cover of Variety... yikes. Hopefully this is just a few unfortunate stills and a crappy slapped-together cover, but it makes everything about these characters look cheap and like its trying to hard to be hip. Now that comic/ superhero movies are cool again, I really hope they don't push "Watchmen" as a wiz-bang superhero extravaganza, but that's what this image suggests to me. Please! Get some tasteful lighting and don't just throw a bunch of cheasy-looking super-suits at the world. . . Still, Doc Manhattan DOES look pretty great, don't he?

That cover looks terribly fake/photoshopped. Not good for grabbing new fans, that's for sure. Not to upset the purists, but was it really necessary to dye Matthew Goode's hair blond. I mean, when they cast him I thought he was a great choice because he's a fantastic actor, has the perfect voice, and has "pretty boy" looks. But he has dark hair. He would've fit the role just fine with that black hair. Now he just looks distractingly weird.

Were he any of the things you say, he couldn't ever have become Ozymandias, much less the post-Ozymandias Adrian Veidt. He's all the more chilling because he's so enlightened and completely ruthless. supposedly, Dreiberg out of costume looks a bit pudgy. He'd look a bit pudgy in costume except that he's wearing armor that pushes his gut in rather than knits that reveal it. The armor is still wrong, wrong, wrong. This nonsense about Snyder using costumes to deconstruct superhero movies doesn't hold up. Moore and Gibbons deconstructed superheroes. They deconstructed COMIC BOOK superheroes because that's where the superheroes were, and they deconstructed a 15-years-dead Silver Age. Don't set a film in 1987 and deconstruct costume styles that didn't exist in the real world until 1995.

Possible spoilers for the book: 90% of the book, you're thinking "wow, this guy is hardcore" what with all the crazy physical displays of peak fitness, and the astronomical intelligence. But in the end, and while there is a hint of truth to his "plan," he just ends up being another crazy whack-job. A cowardly whack-job, as well. Note the horror on his face when he sees that he didnt kill Doc Manhattan. When he catches the bullet, the only reason he isnt scared is because it was like a goddamn experiment...he didnt know if it would work either way. Killing the comedian thing...cowardly. The cold meticulous machinations behind closed doors...cowardly. Hell, even Nite-Owl has a bigger pair, and for most of the book he's portrayed as a little loopy. I know how Ozymandias was supposed to be like, and I know that he is this "hyper-rational" god-among-men, but by the end, all he is is a little bitch. And that's what I see in this picture...even though it's a Crimebusters pic from the past. Either way...he works for me.

I still don't think he's a bitch. I think he's a hero. When I read "Watchmen" for the first time I had to ponder whether what he did was wrong. Twenty years later I've decided it was, but it's a fine ethical point. As for cowardly, how was he supposed to pull off the plan? Put a big ad in the Times?
About Ozymandias (SPOILERS)... I agree with DennisMM

My main problem with the casting and the looks of Ozymandias we've seen so far... he looks shifty, sneaky, effeminate, and evil. Veidt in the book is the exact opposite of that. He's certainly not insane, nor has he not considered the moral aspects of his action... in fact, he's agonized over it. You can debate whether or not he does the right thing. But the book's implication that maybe he DOES do the right thing will be completely lost if he looks like a pansy villian from the start. Veidt's success was a result of his near-superhuman charisma, intellegence, and strength. He's not evil any more than Rorsharch is evil... they both do evil things as the result of their unfliching devotion to their own code of morality. Veidt does what he does because he believes it's the only alternative to complete destruction... and the scary thing is he may be right. He's the only person who has the strength to take the horrific responsibility for doing the only sane thing there is to do... at least from his perspective. That's why Veidt is interesting... and that's why I'm doubtful of Snyder's interpretation of him. But the jury's still out until we see some real acting. If he's simply the stock supervillian he would be without his unequivocal good qualities... count me dissapointed.

No to make the same point again and again, but that's it precisely. And it is Veidt's stereotypically heroic looks and history that belie his murderous behavior and make it possible. No one looks too closely at the smartest, most noble man in the world. Matthew Goode looks devious, especially in that mask. I'll stop now.

But if you don't know the comic (like me, but I'm gonna change that) those costumes look fucking stupid. People dressed up in customs outside of that world always looks dumb, like a sailor in uniform at Barnes in noble stupid.

I really like the cover. It does have a cheesy quality to it, but the characters fit the likeness of the comics so damn well. I hope if this makes mucho bucks that maybe there would be an X-Men movie where the characters wear the costumes from the comics. YEAH! I know these things don’t translate well to live action, but I in my small world I would love to see it.
