I love terminator. I love Terminator 2. Terminator 3 was such a rancid pile of dog shit that after watching it, I decided that I would simply ignore it and that for me, the series would simply end after 2 with John and Sarah succeeding and preventing judgment day. Now this comes along. I don't think there is a single movie that Christian Bale has been in that I haven't either liked or loved. He doesn't strike me as the sort to sign onto something that's going to suck....even if it would give the coolness factor of getting to play John freakin Conner. The trailer didn't show much, but what it did show didn't look awful. So I dunno....maybe this will be ok. Maybe this will even be....good? My hope is that this will cause me to reevaluate my position on the series and allow for the storyline to continue. Until then...please dont suck...please dont suck....please dont suck.

so far...just hope McG surprises us all to be honest. I still don't want to accept the super twist ending though. Also this needs to be at least a 15/R rated film. My perfect view of this film would be the opening 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan combined with the flash forwards from T1 and T2. The same style machines just with brutal killings for the battle scenes. Although not just shakey cam and turn away just as the blood is about to be spilt!

by I Hope You Die
Jul 16th, 2008
02:11:02 PM
Terminator 2 has actually, somehow, aged worse than the original Terminator. The original Terminator holds up as a good movie. T2, which was my favorite movie in the whole wide world when I was 14, was pretty painful to watch in many respects. Edward Furlong is incredibly bad. The humor falls flat. The special effects look kind of hokey due to the fact that they're shot in a "wow, a special effect!" manner. A lot of the dialogue is clunky. Hamilton still rocks when she goes decides to hunt down Dyson though. But I didn't realize how much of the movie is taken up by Furlong at the beginning. Anyone else watched them recently?

by hollywoodsummers
Jul 16th, 2008
02:18:06 PM
He wrote: "I realize it sounds like some Hollywood nickname, hip-hop choice... it's just a name, and to change it now would seem fraudulent." I understand what he's saying and doesn't want to take shit for changing it mid-career, but I think It would be much better to see a credit reading Directed by Joseph Nichol or Joseph M. Nichol, than Directed by McG at the end of a Terminator film. For this reason I propose he gets a full pardon for the change and should get NO SHIT FOR IT AT ALL. He's rebooting this series we all love and if he does as great job at it I feel he's earned the right to reboot his name (and career) in the process. Oh, but if the movie sucks ass in the end, he should just keep it McG, cause none of us will watch it again anyway and won't really care what he calls himself.

by TVguy4566
Jul 16th, 2008
02:43:02 PM
I am at least happy they apparently ditched the stupid theme from T3 that everything is destined to play out like it is supposed to after the first two movies used the theme of “No fate is but what you make of it”.

One theme I always kinda wondered about is and thought would be a good avenue to explore is that they keep sending people/Terminators back to stop Skynet, but what if it screws up the future so the timeline changes and things are much worse in the future. What if Sarah’s efforts to bring down Cyberdyne/Skynet makes Skynet more prepared for a human resistence movement and has better defenses and weapons. It looks like they may explore that theme here.

That said, I am still leary of this project.

Ya know, I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling that way about T2. I watched it a couple of weeks ago, and was a little underwhelmed as compared to my "Oh My Fucking God That Movie Is Great" impression I've held for years (saw it opening weekend). Now, of course the DVD version I'm stuck with is the extended cut with all the father figure stuff between Furlong and Termie, that Cameron wisely cut for the theatrical release. Still impressive though is the bike/truck chase, Robert Patrick as liquid metalman, the editing during the hospital chase, the steel mill....hell, 90% is still damn impressive..
I'm liking the look
by theoyboy
Jul 16th, 2008
02:44:12 PM
I'm liking the look of the early stages of the war. The vegetation coming back to life after the nuclear holocaust, intertwined with the stagnant destruction and machinery. The trailer is meant to fill you with dread, it looks too real and too close for comfort compared to the future war scenes you've seen in the previous films. I'm sure the most desolate, bleak, gray and black sets are being saved for the second and/or third films. Personally, I think McG knows exactly what he's doing with the look and feel of this film. Even the daytime scenes look desolate and a shell of a former normal reality.

The addition of the green, especially in subtle ways with the quick shot near the end of the trailer with Sam Worthington standing in front of a large explosion (you'll see a tree) is just fantastic to me.

Count me in.

fracking awesome....love how the static choppy transmission was playing the terminator tune before the main music keyed up.... t3 was a great movie too..so im guessin all the terminator interference in the past is totally messing up the future, love how the terminator rose from the water....looked like a more advanced version of the T-1....its cool that they would still use the old model to a certain degree in the future...sewer and drainage patrol to flush the humans out into the open for the HKs and endoskeletons to kill... wtf was that giant claw that snatched that dude up at the beginning ? looks awesome....and YES the sarah connor chronicles is an awesome show and is a rousing success..hence season 2....wish that journeyman got a second season.....too bad someone cant make a feature film on that.

I thought Edward Furlong sucked when I first watched T2 in the theaters so that didn't change, nor the fact that Furlong was a 14 year old playing a 10 year old (and it only being 7 years since the orginal). But I still think it has a solid story, great action, and most of the other performances are spot on. Just because everyone have overused the catchphrases and jokes and the special effects are a bit outdated, but nowhere as bad as the original (the matting for the Terminator endoskeleton in the finale is horrible).

T3 wasn't great, but it was nowhere near the trainwreck it could've been. It does look like they are giving this a much bigger sense of scale than having all the fighting take place in the remains of downtown LA. It is just a teaser but it at least tells us that A) It seems to have a good visual look and B) Christian Bale does look good as Connor. That still leave a lot up in the air (a "Connornator" would definitely be a deal-killer) but at least there is some hope. Also, I don't think it has to be a hard-R movie either. Really if it wasn't for the language and brief nuditity (as Radar would say), T2 and T3 were moderate R at the most.

Every time that movie is on, I watch it. I thought Furlong sucked when I was a kid, and he still does when I watch. But I tolerate it because the movie is excellent otherwise. Arnold, Robert Patrick, and Linda Hamilton were all great. The action was crazy, ridiculous, and well staged. And the movie is paced pretty good. I don't get how people are hating on it after the fact. Are these people like 19 and think the best action movie ever is The Matrix?

T3 was a disaster...and when I heard they were doing another, I was interested but also dreaded the notion of them doing it after the ham-fisted effort that was T3. Then I heard about the 'twist'; where John Connor dies and is transformed into a Terminator programmed to save us. I dunno.....I'd be more excited if this had a better director - but McG is largely a hack. Trailer's cool though.

Looks more like a movie, while T3 was clearly a production sequel in the tradition of franchise/repackage/regurgitat e that kept, say, Jaws 3 from being a good movie. Let's take a little from 1, a little from 2, mix a little of this movie over here . . . and this time, it's a woman terminator! Terminator 3 was definitely direct-to-video quality. Just the teaser for this movie looks better than anything I saw for T3.

T3's R Rating
by Mr. Profit
Jul 16th, 2008
03:29:41 PM
Was shenanigans because nothing in that film really warranted an R Rating. I watched it recently and thought it was tame. The only reason I can see the movie getting an R was because of the nudity, and how it was a man kicking the shit out of a woman for 90 minutes. Other than that I don't get why. Especially when she killed the kids off-screen at the start of the film.

They're like those What If? comic books, or those Blade Runner sequel books that nobody gives a shit about, not even the superfans who spent $80 on that Super Mega Ultra Deluxe DVD set that comes in a briefcase. I hope it's an entertaining movie, but it'll be no different than if they a movie version of Blade Runner 2: Deckard's Baadasssss Song.

Jul 16th, 2008
04:04:51 PM
A Terminator film not directed by Cameron or Cuaron (what he did with the action scenes in Children Of Men was incredible) is going to be so so if you ask me. Bale is perfect casting. This trailer looks a bit rushed. The effects look solid though. I'll see it if the trailers get better. But there is no way this will hold a candle against T1 or T2. And you can take that to the bank.

by chuffsterUK
Jul 16th, 2008

As described on this very site??? It opens with footage of people out in every day life. Christian Bale voiceovers something like: "I always knew it would happen"... Than a pause... "They told me I could stop it." The same people begin looking to the sky.... "That I could save us". Looks of horror come across their faces as he says, "They were wrong". Music rises as we cut to black for a second. The Terminator theme starts, with the duh duh, duh, duh, duh. NEXT SUMMER appears on the screen... We get a quick shot looking out over a sunny desert, and then a shot of Bale, in badass commando uniform and very recognizably the same guy who plays Batman, being lowered into a huge bunker of weapons. THE FIGHT FOR THE FUTURE rolls across, and we get mixed clips from inside one of the survivor bunkers as seen in Terminator 1 - but they look more concentration campish; very crowded, shots of Bale walking with a large crowd. And then the word... BEGINS. The music quickly rises as we get shot of a huge truck racing down a high way, a shot or two of a helicopter flying mixed with more close ups of the actors when Bale whispers, "They're coming". It all goes quiet. Massive drums blare the beginning of the theme (again) but this time much louder, more pumped up, as we get a metallic silver T that morphs into a 4. We then get the big money shot of the trailer. Its Bale on a motorcycle with some girl on the back. They speed through a door of what looks like a warehouse toward us. As soon as they pass the screen, a huge terminator on wheels, a lot like the one they battle in the first one, smashes through the wall, chasing them. It looks awesome. It then says: Memorial Day 2009. I was not a big fan of T3 aside from the ending, but this looks really good.

I remember the times when X-Men 2 had the decency to just have a ca. 20 seconds teaser months before the release, showing nothing but the x-logo being formed out of whatever. or the teaser for the new Star Trek movie, which is showing nothing but images of the spaceship being assembled... that's classy. Showing all the non-geeks that you're in production now, and wait with the juice images until the movie is actually in sight.

I wish that Cuaron did more genre films. But I'm worried that after the piss poor way that Warners handled the marketing on that film he's going to have a tough time being given a big budget ever again. But the guy is beast and every penny shows up onscreen. Nolan, Cuaron, Darabont, Cronenberg and Tony Scott are making the most dependable mainstream fare at the moment. I also wish that Verhoeven was thrown a bone every now and then. I've said this before on these boards but it was a crime that he wasn't attached as director to G.I. Joe.

I dont't know anything about GI Joe. I also didn't know Cuaron before Children of Men. But this movie surprised me in two ways.
One being surprised that I like Clive Owen (since then I liked him in Sin City and Shoot Em Up) and two being what you said about "every penny shows on screen". It's amazing how much the crew got out of the probably limited resources it had. In some scenes you think there is much more going on than actually IS going on. Like towards the end when that tank and some soldiers shoot on the building with the rebels in it. Basically it's not that much gear being used, but the way it is shot it really makes you think you're part of the action and moreover, there's a bigger war/struggle going on around this building/scene.

And, octagonproplex: indeed, T2's teaser was great. They knew how to cut a kickass teaser out of nothing back then, instead of shitty "CG animated logo with Don LaFontaine VO" teasers, before giving it all away in the trailers.

The story "ended" in The Terminator when it was revealed we were in a single time line universe with a loop and no possibility of "changing the future". However, an awful lot of that story hadn't been told. Hopefully this movie could be that untold story. They just need to ignore the absolute wank that was T2 and T3, which are both impossible storylines in the universe set up by the terminator. THE PHOTO TAKEN AT THE GAS STATION WAS THERE TO PROVE IT WAS A CLOSED TIME LOOP. Geddit? Eh? (Rolls eyes.)

This is coming from a guy who was bored as hell during T2, and hasn't even bothered to see T1 or T3. However, if Bale starred in the Sex and the City movie it would've been enough for me to go see it, so I'll definitely see this (and probably go back and watch the whole trilogy again).

2 hours of the crappiest parts of the first 3 movies (those generic, grungy fights with floating belnder units and stupid looking tanks, and the obligatory "skull under foot" crap)? Why do we need another post-apocalyptic movie? What made the first three Terminator films so great is that they took place in our "present." Until I see more, Im not sold on this.

It's paced a little slower than a modern action film, but aside from one or two T-1000 shots (which are no worse than an effect on say Heroes), the movie stands up amazingly well for a 17 year-old movie - acting is all decent, yeah Furlong and Schwarzenegger are not the best actors and it feels strained when they are trying to be emotional, but at least the film tries to make you care about it's characters and gives them some motivation and personality, which is more than can be said for 90% of modern action movies. What elevates it? Cameron's direction and the character of Sarah. That voice over, the melancholy scenes that build a slow sense of foreboding when she sits watching John play with the T800 - its a step above any other film like it. A director like Mostow or McG would have continued to play that scene for laughs (John is high-fiving the Terminator etc.) but Cameron takes a step back and plays Sarah's sadness at seeing her boy having fun when she knows what is ahead for them. It is fucking fantastic - and the reason it's such a shame Cameron has been AWOL from feature films since Titanic.

Bale's involvement already lends the project some measure of credibility. He's one of the most interesting and watchable movie stars there is, right now. This teaser doesn't show very much but it has a sense of apocalyptic dread and hints at a new direction in the mythology. I wonder if/how much this movie will tie into THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES. I really like that show.

Or hell got with prosthetic stuff when you need it like T2 did. Then just get Arnie into a VO recording session and have him say stuff. You'd only need like one take for each line! If this is true and he wants to change his name but thinks he can't because it's mid career then this says 2 things about him:

1)He's a studio stooge with no balls- he can't even pick his own fucking name for chrissakes. This in turn means that this will be rammed full of focus group/ marketing decisions.

2)He has no judgement, in that he thought picking a twattish moniker like McG (I am aware of the irony here) would be a good idea for a director.

So couple his appaling judgement to his complete lack of spine and you have the AvP Terminator.

Enjoy.

Saw them at Wembley back in July of I think 1992 (could've been '91 - I was young then, and very drunk) on the USE YOUR ILLUSION TOUR. Support bands were Soundgarden (whose biggest hit then were "Jesus Christ pose" and "Spoonman") followed by Faith No More, who ended their set having Mike Patton run from one end of the lengthy Wembley stage to the other, launch head-first into the massive projector screen and knocked himself out. It was an all-day event, and hands-down the greatest concert I've ever been to, before or since. GUNS'n'ROSES rock - maybe not to the kids of today, but they all like MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE and MADINA LAKE so what the fuck do they know!

Dude, Nirvana fucking saved rock and roll from the preening hair n' spandex wanker bands like Guns N' Posers. Truly, Nirvana emerged from the underground of the 80s which had better bands (Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, Minutemen, et al), but they were able to take that spirit -- the spirit of true, artfully done, rock / punk / post-punk -- and keep it real while bursting through to the mainstream. What did GnR do? Tease their hair, sing about hookers, and do their best to keep it shit. There is no difference AT ALL between Guns and Posers and Poison.

Kyle even said that there's no way to stop the war, it's not his mission. In T2 Cameron goes the opposit direction, and even if T2 is a good movie I think T3 is more in "T1 mood" (exept that the first half is a kind of T2 remake)

I do think dismissing T4 sight out of hand is kinda short sighted. I mean, it's waaay too early to tell, but ever since T1 all I've wanted to see is the Future War and know we'll finally get to see it. I don't think that PG-13 is a deal-breaker. It could still work. Apparently TDK is crazy dark and mean and sadisitic and that got a PG-13. LOTR as well managed to be ass-kickingly cool as well and that was PG-13. McG might be kind of a putz, but if the script is good, and the action is cool, and we get all sorts of awesome large scale future war stuff, it could be really awesome. Also, Bale as Connor is so friggin' perfect. Haven't you wanted to see John Connor in action as the bad ass General since T1? I know I have. I'm definitely willing to give this a chance.

I just hope they get rid of the Marcus idea because that sounds totally stupid.

I thought you guys hated Equilibrium?
by Darth Macchio
Jul 17th, 2008

So to say Bale hasn't done anything bad isn't accurate then yes? I loved Equilibrium and pretty much everything I've ever seen Bale in (I've totally adopted/copped "I need to return some video tapes" from AP as it's just a kick ass anti-one-liner). And even tho many of you hate 'We Are Marshall", aside from its rather forced sentimentality, it seemed like a well put together film. Outside of crazy beautiful Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore, I fucking hated the Charlie's Angels movies...but the name has got to go. His reasoning is bullshit too...its a psuedo-self-deprecating way of saying "Nope, not gonna change it" and that's his right. But it's also my fucking distraction when the credits role and a American director's name pops up with no fucking vowels in it. Guy's like over 40 years old right...and goes by his childhood nickname. I wonder how many of you insist people call you by your childhood nicknames? If your actual name was "Douchebagfuck McGinty" then I might understand the change. I say credit yourself like this "Joseph 'McG' McGinty". We've all seen those nickname quotes and they're all interesting and even if 'McG' is an obvious nickname...its still ludicrous and pretentious to go by that nickname in a professional manner and NOT be in hip-hop music. Use McG for directing rap videos ass...use your full fuckin name with the nick in the center for film work. Either that or deal with the assault on your moronic moniker jackass.

As for T4? 2 words: not necessary. My hope? That I'm proven wrong. Altho even if I am, I still think the guy's name is dumbfuck stupid.

I don't think that a PG-13 T4 will work simply because we need some major ass kickery in a future war movie named T4 which is about annihiliating the human race. Just try to remember the future war scenes we got so far: people are explicitly getting shot and even explode. I don't think that we're going to see such stuff in a fucking teenie Terminator flick. Maybe it'll work somehow (nah, it's Mc-fucking-G) but I simply wish that those pussified studio execs opted for a hard R, with blood'n'guts.

Motoko, You Never Saw SPEED RACER / You've Seen LOTR, Right?
by LaserPants
Jul 17th, 2008
02:24:03 PM
We've already gone over this before. I can't remember the talkback, but you brought up several things you didn't like about SPEED RACER that NEVER happened in the movie! The only things you did remark upon that were in the movie were also in the trailer and that was it. Remember? Look its okay to admit you didn't see it. But, eventually, when you actually do see it, you very well may hate it, but you should at least see the movie before you decide you hate it. I mean I think T2 sucks, but at least I saw it.

On the ratings thing, I agree hard-R would be much, MUCH better, but I don't think the PG-13 is a deal breaker. Again, look at LOTR. That was a pretty violent series of movies, and they were all PG-13. I mean even when they show any of the Terminator movies on TV, the scenes you're talking about are uncut, so why wouldn't they show stuff like that in a PG-13 movie?

Again, I agree that a hard-R T4 would be the best way to go, but it ain't gonna happen. Thats a bummer, but its not a deal breaker, at least not for me.
Hard 'R' gives us what....
by Darth Macchio
Jul 17th, 2008
02:52:39 PM
...the freedom to show copious amounts of sangria and more than one "Fuck". In LOTR, with nary a modern profanity was not particularly bloody either. Neither of which is remotely necessary for such a classic and noble tale...Terminator movies, on the other hand, are without question more violent, more gritty, more profance, and more bloody! Once upon a time we argued for bush and boobs longer than a glance...now we just want reality in the context of our fantasy. LotR has no room for hyper amounts of blood nor profanity...it wasn't in the source material so it wasn't in the films. Ironically, the Rings films met the PG-13 demands without being compromised at all (unless story content leading to longer films counts! Where did you go Tom Bombadil?!?!) but to compare the rating process to the Terminator films is apples/oranges. Terminator begs for a pure 'R' rating and to do anything less, by definition, removes the films soul....where people say "FUCK!" when there friends get blown up by a phase plasma pulse-laser, in the 40-watt range.

Maybe you're right and it's not a deal-breaker...but when I consider the reason is for wider release and a larger return from the kiddie demographic (when I was a kid I SNUCK into R film..saw Aliens in the theater that way fer chrissakes!)..I think it's being done purely for marketing...which is bullshit. The spirit of the genre (or, in this case, franshice) and creative integrity should always come first.

Opinions aside, I really liked Cloverfield except for one thing...there's just no way in hell that all that shit would be going on an the only cussword they use is "Shit".

What we ought to be talking about is how the rating system is totally fucked...unelected, unrepresentative asswipes decide the fate of a movie and sometimes its entire market simply with their arbitrary and typically hypocritical ratings (why is saying "Fuck" 2 times in any movie worse than straight up violence? are these squares still scared of the naughty bits? We puritan wanna-bes go apeshit when a boob pops on screen..kids are ruined for life...civilation as we know grinds to a halt...but violence? YUM YUM GIMME SUM!!!!!"

I do hope a PG-13 T4 works...but before the potential for gimping the movie...I'm more worried its not another Michael Bay-esque action shitfest with larger and larger explosions and shiny mechanical robots blowins shit up with even bigger explosions and fire.

AICN mad a thread about it being pg-13 right? McG took a lot shit from the geek community, I think the least you guys could do is make a thread about it being R. Don't get me wrong I don't like the guy, but at least help curve the negativity surrounding this project since he was announced director.

1) His tastes in movies and what he values in movies are horrible. 2) His tastes and values in music are equally as horrible. 3) Hay you know what G&R did not do? They were not so week that they killed them selfs for some self pitty bullshit. That is one of the many, many reasons why G&R rules even to this day.

A week is 7 days. And given that, I agree that GunsN'Posers isn't a week, they're just a really shitty band of posers in hairspray and spandex.

Pwned!

Are you sure you're not retarded Sidepocket? Must be all the "rockin' out" you do to Guns N' Posers. Don't you know that shitty music rots the brain?

One more thing, "hay" is what horses eat. The word you want to use is "hey". Man, you make it too easy!

I can certainly understand why you were bored during the juvenile dumbfest that was T2. But do watch The Terminator, it's a genuinely brilliant low-budget movie. T3 is just popcorn hokum, enjoyable enough if you don't take it seriously. (T2 has already ballsed the story up by this point, so it doesn't matter too much.)

I'm afraid to say he appears to be one of the few sane people in geekdom. Seriously, why do so many people love T2? It's embarrassingly bad. Even ignoring its horrible logic non sequiturs, it's a BAD, BAD MOVIE. An overlong, mechanical, uninventive movie-by-numbers with an annoying kid at its heart and weak schamltz a-plenty. Maybe most of the people who loved it watched it when they were ten years old. Certainly I suspect that most people who love T2 saw it before they saw The Terminator.

Just scrap your search function. I'v been coming here since around '99, 2000, and it HAS NEVER FUCKING WORKED. Having it there is just a tease. It's passive aggressive. I try it about once a year, thinking you may have fixed it, but nope, this is the one corner of the internet universe that has never been able to unravel the mystery of website html search functions.

And Hey, we're all net-savvy enough these days to just search on google for anything we're looking for, so not only is it a useless carbuncle taking up space, it's obsolete, too.

Hear me! You know this post is worth a thousand others, that just haven't bothered commenting.

Thank You, Kaitain!

Finally someone with some sense. I suspect the same thing, btw, that people who are psychotically obsessed with T2 saw it when they were very youngm saw it before they saw T1 (the only classic of the bunch, btw) and love it more out of a sense of nostalgia than anything else. Thats what STAR WARS is like for me -- I saw it when I was 5 years old in the theatre and it blew my mind. I still love it, even though now its more a love born of nostalgia. I think if I had been older and had more perspective when I saw it, I would have thought it was cheesy.

Better than T1 or T2? That's crazy. Robocop is decent, but it isn't a major landmark in cinema history like Cameron's films were.

To be fair, Starship Troopers was so absolutely horrible that it has contaminated everything related to Verhoeven for me.

T2 is far from being an "uninventive movie-by-numbers", you whiny pussified teenie fucknut. Now go back and watch the fucking Power Rangers you love so dearly.
