I thought it was gonna be another Jack Black all over the place in too many scenes type of flick. But he let the kids shine as well as the supporting cast. He's fantastic to play off of when given the chance to do so. One man, does not a movie make.
Why?

So unbelievably unnecessary. I love the first one, but the plot description on this sounds like a shitty DTV sequel. Don't forget that as great as Black, White and Linklater can be, they do have Nacho Libre and Bad News Bears to their names.

I thought it was amusing, but not not nearly as good as the buzz. Since then, Jack Black has just gotten annoying. Kung Fu Panda is the only nearly watchable movie he has been in years. And computer animated movies can make comedians who have lost it seem funny again (Eddie Murphy, Jim Carrey, Mike Myers).

Jack Black and Philip Seymour Hoffman should play brothers

Either in a comedy or a serious drama. I think Black has it in him to play serious without a giant black ape for a co-star. His role in tropic thunder, although very comedic, hinted at some serious dark acting ability. And I also like his voice work in KungFu Panda - though the animation was there to support it, which helped immensely.

He really gets into the "real" mind-set of a Rock and Roller and overdoses in the end. That would get me in the theater. Seeing an overweight Jack Black in a bathtub after re-searching all the greats....Hendrix, Morrison, Joplin, Presley. I would pay to see that.

they might be going for an "Almost Famous" feel, which is cool, but I think the original is a film that doesn't get recognized as a GREAT family film. Jack Black has had a trio of family movies in "School of Rock", "Nacho Libre", and now "Kung Fu Panda" that will eventually get him recognized as a great talent. Right now, he has many people divided, but considering that many other comedians have tried putting their unique comic blend into family films and failed...he seems to have a knack for picking the right projects for himself.

I kind of worry that this might just be cashing in on the craze of watching kids sing songs. Who else knows of the Mini-Pops? They have been around as an entity FOREVER, but they never seem to get older...or more talented.
So do we get to see the kids...

working for free in seedy bars, or charged for all the soda they drank? Packed together in an old Ford econoline van that reeks of BO and pot while touring the Chitlin circuit? The girls getting pressured into blowing the club owner so they get the prime 9-11 set? Ya know..all the fun the music biz has to offer. If ever there was an a movie that did not need a sequel, this would be it.

Seriously, it was as good a "family" film as you're gonna get today that doesn't have Pixar stamped on it. The movie worked on all levels and Jack was perfectly cast. However, my hope for the sequel isn't high. I kind of wish Jack would avoid the sequel thing, but he's earned it and deserves it. Just hope the script delivers.

everytime i see the commercial for their album, god i just wanna punch them all really hard. and the scary thing is that some of those songs they cover arent for children's ears, and yet they use little 9yr old girls to sing em. and besides, what kid would wanna listen to some cheap ass cover sung by kids, when they can just listen to the originals? i swear, those mini pops shoulda stayed in the 80s where they belonged. whoever decided to bring em back a few years ago needs to die a horrible, horrible death. and thus ends my rant.

Man-Witch: "A male schoolteacher abruptly discovers he's got witchlike abilities that lead him to be taken in by a coven of real witches. They send him to "witch school," where he is the lone adult male, surrounded mostly by little girl witches-in-training." It sounds awesome! (i'm serius) Why isn't black making that one?!

Linklater got old
by Bobo_Vision
Jul 14th, 2008
12:14:25 PM
He's not that old really, but his view on life seems to have aged a lot with his films. I thought the first one was alright, apart from the fact that some of the kids were kind of annoying which made repeat viewing of the movie an impossibility. Just because you get married and have kids doesn't mean you have to make movies about kids and for kids, or does it?
Also...
by Bobo_Vision
Jul 14th, 2008
12:18:30 PM
...sending a group of kids on a cross-country field trip with some stoner seems like it would require some sort of super duper permission slip from parents. I don't see anyone signing that thing.

And a rock n' roll historical road trip might be fun if it were with maybe late teenagers who are of age, but with kids, that'll be a major snoozefest and heavy on the preaching.

But there's really no need for this. Make something new dude. Although I didn't realize it was a 'married w/kids' thing, as Bobo_Vision pointed out. That has unfortunately crippled many a creative talent. Women should eat their husbands after birth to keep them from embarrassing themselves. ;)
