Tom Cruise...

He was great in this movie for 90% of his scenes - he was rude, over the top, and quite funny....by the last scene, though, he is on screen for several minutes dancing and it's just not funny anymore. I think everyone agreed with me that I saw the screening with...just a little too much Cruise by the time the credits rolled.

Some of the things appearing in redband and other trailers are so far removed form the context of the movie that they could lose their effect if you have seen them already when you watch the movie. I did my best to avoid trailers and was rewarded with some great surprises.
I can't compare Cruise to Paprika...

I didn't see Paprika. But if it was great in small doses and then by the end you don't find the same joke funny anymore, then yes I suppose they are similar in this case.

I used to get the odd review posted, but that's two reviews shafted! First There Will Be Blood, and now this? Come on, I didn't even spoil the cameos except under a section I highlighted as SPOILERS, and even then, I held back! I agree with Bombadils_Bane, Tom Cruise was freaking hilarious, and SPOILER, Stiller's obsession with dance sequences is a bit odd. Oh wait, Jubba spoiled this too in the talkback. Ugh, I'll stop whining.

by Jubba
Jul 10th, 2008
04:14:36 PM
i suppose this thread should get a spoiler tag after all? but there are many more cameos than what i've listed...and to be fair, McConaughey is more than a cameo and Nolte is in the trailer. But sorry if I ruined anything there. Knowing these people are in the movie won't take away from the experience, in my opinion.

Which didn't make my top 10 of last year but did my top 15. I love a satire. Is Tropic Thunder going to cause me to mix my oil with gas before I get my engine runnin or can I go to the cinema sober and get my laughs? Yes, this is a drug question.

Hot Fuzz was great. This movie is great. Different kinds of great, though...Fuzz was more of a satire, like you said. Thunder isn't making fun of war films, it's making fun of actors who believe they are the character they are playing and what happens when they have to face who they really are. I saw it sober and laughed a lot...some people behind me might not have been as sober...and they laughed just as much.

TOM CRUISE

05:18:57 PM
On imbd somebody said this on TOM cruise He plays a really vicious studio exec who has no problems hanging Stiller's character out to dry now that his career has washed up (sound familiar?). Bill Hader plays his right hand mand. Cruise was really funny in this and every other word was "mother f ucker"! It was awesome. He's in the final scene of the film too- which to me, was the funniest part.

Coogan is only any good as Alan Partridge, god knows what Hollywood see in him, his own character stuff is exceptional, but his big screen outings all seems very flat in comparison, Around the World in 80 days, Night at the Museum, all very very flat.. Same as Ricky Gervais, The Office was an amazing achievement, but he has NOTHING to offer Hollywood.. Extras was OK, but nowhere as near as clever as Office, all I can see in Ricky Gervais is David Brent, his characters all seem EXACTLY the same.

this movie will bring Cruise back into form. Soon as this hits big they will greenlight the hardy boys stiller cruise movie. I saw this last night in nyc. Yeah stiller had fun with Cruise, but he was outstanding on par with Downey in my book for the movies mvp. I thought Jack Black was also quite hysterical and really got better as the movie went on. Really a great comedy. Fun movie that simple.

Basically, I just said it was awesome, that Stiller hasn't done anything this good in a while, Downey was performance-for-the-year defining, his fake trailer was even the best, there were a couple little things I wish they'd changed, but the cameos were fucking awesome, and overall if you don't see this movie you're as retarded as Simple Jack! And it was from someone who's name isn't Judd Apatow!

How good do you expect anyone to be in mainstream "comedies" like Museum and 80 days? He's amazing in 24 Hour Party People, and hilarious in Tristram Shandy. Maybe just Winterbottom films?

Downey Junior = funny without trying (which is the key to being funny) Black = about as funny as cancer Stiller = not quite as funny as cancer Don't deny that which you know to be true. Stiller is an awesome director

Finally, he gets to direct a film since his criminally underestimated Cable Guy. Why did everyone hate Cable Guy as it was one of my favourite films and had hoped Stiller would direct more movies without starring in them. Interestingly, Jack Black was in Cable Guy too but was not used much. Seems to be the same case with Tropic Thunder according to the reviewers

Stiller also directed Zoolander since Cable Guy. I just saw this movie tonight on the USC campus. I was gonna send in a review but seeing all the talkbackers complain about theirs not getting posted I decided to hold back. I think it was really funny, and there were more parts of it that worked vs. those that didn't, but Pineapple Express is a better movie. I say this cause these two are about to be in direct competition and I thought I'd weigh in on my opinion. I recommend them both, but if you're pinching pennies and don't do two movie weekends in a row, then you definitely wanna ride the Express. I also saw Hellboy 2 tonight and I really liked it, but fuck that The Dark Knight will OWN all you motherfuckers.

So I saw this thing in Boston as well, and yeah, I agree that it was pretty damn hilarious (and that Downey Jr. was easily the best part), but I must be the lone voice of reason here: The Cruise stuff is shockingly funny for the first minute or so, but then it just gets... kinda uncomfortable. It's so exaggerated that it starts to become, for lack of a better word, kind of sad. He's trying SO HARD to conquer his public image that it becomes transparently desperate, and the fact that he and Stiller are pals makes the whole thing such an obvious play for PR points that it's tough to watch without thinking of that. A little editing of his role would have gone a loooong way. Never did think I'd hear Tom Cruise say "I'm gonna rip her tits off", that's for sure.
How dare he!

"Sure, he's making fun of the tenants of those movies and stealing scenes outright from them...". Damn you, Ben Stiller, those tenants deserve better than you mocking them and stealing them. It's not their fault they lack the funds or credit history necessary to purchase their own movies and have to rent space in others.

Not really a surprise to see Tom Cruise steal the movie. He's a brilliant actor who hadn't done comedy in a while (other than Oprah) and needed the good press. The whole scientology thing is weird but no weirder than a bunch of Kabbalah freaks, or even Christians.

Tom Cruise: DOA
by thegreatwhatzit
Jul 12th, 2008

Cruise has done irrevocable damage to his own career. A total tool. He's in denial of his own lifestyle (parodied on SOUTH PARK)...his marriage to Katie Holmes ("I'm not gay") is a farce, nobody's buying it...his performance on OPRAH was the catalyst for his own self-destruction ("I'm not gay")...his subsequent TV appearances turned into freak shows...and his latest outting with Oprah ("I've love you Katie ["I'm not gay"]) drew big laughs on THE SOUP. Consequently, LIONS FOR LAMBS died as a movie and DVD release--and VALKYRIE has been indefinitely postponed (Cruise's German accent drew sneers from the company brass). That asshole better be ready to live in that fat suit; another alter ego that can be appended to his gay/anti-gay facade.
