I enjoyed Grindhouse and Kill Bill, but I think we’ve officially entered homage overdose territory. I know he’s just a producer on this (and maybe just a name at that) but I’d rather see Tarantino focus on another serious film. Personally, I think that when he didn’t receive overwhelming accolades for Jackie Brown he retreated back into making critic-proof genre stuff (albeit, high concept, highly entertaining critic proof genre stuff). It’s a shame too, because I think QT can be brilliant, and I’d love to see what he could do with more subtle material.

I like movies where balls are cut off- does anyone have any other recommendations? By the way- vote for me and I will make it a national requirment for all men upon reaching age 18 to have at least one testicle removed that's a "ball" for some of you slower libertarians- for the good of the country!! You got the balls to vote for me?? then let me see them!!!

Instead of a bunch of gun happy rednecks trying to appear cool driving motorcycles around in the desert, how about they tear New York apart, or start a turf war with some latinos in Hell A. At least we'd get more dramatic tension than what we have currently with this movie. Anyone else feel a little bad for the director of these movies that have Tarantino's name on them (or other director glory hoggers)? I guarantee the vast majority of people seeing this movie will go in thinking its a Tarantino movie. Okay, makes financial sense, but the director is hardly gonna get a whole lot of recognition.

You know that shot where something explodes and the badasses walking away from it in the forground barely flinch? It was cool the first time I saw it. It's now as uncool as the 3-point landing (toes, fist, knee) other badasses make when they jump off a building.

But it doesn't seem to have the well-thought out/fleshed out nostalgic vibe of Death Proof, which was about the death of the hollywood stuntman as much as it was a slasher flick. QT is a genius.
Regarding Death Proof...
by Zeke25:17
Jul 10th, 2008
06:24:35 PM
Yes, QT has indeed shown flashes of genius in almost every film he's written and directed. BUT! Genius is NOT casting Kurt Russell as your villain, a character you're supposed to hate but because of the man himself are instead predisposed to LIKE. Genius is NOT making most of your female victims SO unlikeable and annoying that the viewer actually WANTS Stuntman Mike to grind them into paste. And genius is NOT falling so in love with Zoe Bell that you assume everyone else will too, when in fact most of us felt kinda sorry for Mike (Kurt Russell, that is) being bounced around from chick to chick like a fucking pinball at the end of the movie. That film was really the first time I thought Tarantino had no idea what he was doing. Great idea for a film, no doubt; one great crash scene; and a balls-out-swingin terrific chase scene (props to Zoe for that one, absolutely). But at least 90% of the back-and-forth between the ladies blew chunks. (And yeah, maybe it did in the real grindhouse stuff too...but it was fucking SHORT!)
yeah I'll see it

I understand your thoughts about Kurt Russell being imminently likeable, but I felt he was able to be likeable in a very wicked, skillful way in Death Proof... I thought the casting was brilliant. As far as the annoying females, I think that's a device of the slasher film that Tarantino was employing as a sort of dramatic device to make us feel conflicted and disturbed about the movie.

C'mon, if this is big, dumb and fun, who cares if it ain't "aht". Classic formula that has entertained me for years. The way I see it, Bishop is Adam Roarke, Madsen is a more cynical Big Bill Smith, and Balfour... well if Jan Michael Vincent had done a biker flick with those other two...? As for Hopper and my main badass Carradine, who cares? They're in a biker flick -together! Here's to the return of inexpensively made, pure adrenaline, kick-ass entertainment!

The movie's budget was $53 million (though some have challenged this figure, insisting that it actually broached $70-$80 million). The '70s drive-in commerce was produced on a fuckin' shoestring (under $100,000). But Tarantino cheated, inflating the budget and forfeiting synergy with B-directors like Jack Hill, Roger Corman, Joe Dante, et al. In regard to Kurt Russell (very underrated), what's the deal when he broke the 4th wall and grinned at us? It reminded me when Burt Reynolds winked at the camera in SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT. A psychotic rogue makes nice with the audience?
