A once promising idea has become corrupt and self-serving. SAG no longer serves the people it reps. I'm glad AFTRA made a deal, instead of trying to bully like SAG is trying to do. They know better. While we can rail all day against the paychecks that entertainers get, it is their product that keeps us coming back for more. If you don't agree with the compensation SAG members enjoy then...tough shit. They make way more than I do, but I never hesitate to plunk down ten bucks to see a movie I've been looking forward to. Do their activities warrant the obscene salaries? Probably not, but I'd rather next summer be filled with quality films than have those same projects halt production because of some strike. What am I saying? Fuck the greedy bastards. As you can tell, I'm conflicted on this one.

759/day for PRINCIPAL actors. The reality is most members of SAG are not prinicpal actors and are not working with enough frequency to have what they do make count. These actors are the gears that make the machine work, and I'm surprised that people are siding with AMPTP, who collect the real profits. I would imagine that people would be surprised to know just how many people are SAG members and just how little this "contract" does for them and how much it does for producers.

Steady work is a bitch, while pay is close to amounts you suggest, the vast majority of SAG actors only work two or three times a year (or not at all) for limited amounts of time. I've personally worked seven times at a total of something like 18 weeks in the past 12 months, do the math with your numbers. Any and all residuals I receive go to groceries and gas, and thats a small amount. This is the reality that SAG members deal with. Compare that to studio profits.

most duel members of these unions voted for the strike . simple fact is it just doesn't effect actors but also stunt folk who sometimes need that dvd resid to help make it to the next job . not everyone is a full time actor and about 73% of the SAG memebers out there earn less than 5,000 a year . they do it for the joy it brings and for the possible chance to do something that they love for a living . all the union haters can get fucked like they normally do at the non union job they probably work at now .

Glad that many do it despite the low pay. It is for the love. I understand that. But in all honestly how many people out there simply think they are that important enough or that good at it to be doing it full time. How about getting a full time job with acting on the side. How about getting a part time job along with their acting career. I really cannot feel that bad for indivduals who get in this business thinking it will be their sole support. After all is it true that only 10% of all so called actors actually working? Not a good percentage. Good luck.

sag paychecks aren't regular? actors don't work every day? whose fault is that? i'm sure most actors will blame it on their manager or agent, if they even have one. an actor who isn't working isn't really an actor, are they? trying to be a successful actor (i.e. able to make ends meet by your acting paycheck) is like sitting around every day and playing the lottery, hoping you're going to win. it's no one's fault but their own that they chose this path in life, now they're complaining that the lottery doesn't pay enough when they get lucky enough to win. p.s. principal actors in terms of the sag deal mostly means someone who is on screen and is a principal fixture of a shot. that waiter who walks on screen and takes the main characters' orders and is never seen again gets paid the 'principal actor' rate for the day.

No, I'm someone with a steady job in the film industry, someone whose steady job would be affected by a SAG strike. When actors bickering over a penny here and a penny there affects MY job and the jobs of the 300+ staff and crew with whom I work, forgive me for not shedding any tears for their cause. I don't give a fuck if 80% of their members make less than 20k a year. If that's the case, maybe they should look into another profession.

You've admitted that your p.o.'ed because your income would be directly affected, but isn't that your 'fault' for choosing the line of work you chose? I'm an industry accountant and would also be directly and adversely affected, but I appreciate the issues on the table and can think for myself, instead of just parroting the same stupid and demeaning 'talking points' that the producers want to feed us. You've obviously been eating them right up. Here's why the whole "plumber" analogy is completely asinine: As a producer, you hire people to write, direct and perform because you cannot do those things. Their CREATIVE contributions shape and inform your product, which would not exist without the combined CREATIVE talents, experience and education of these people. If you continue to make money from that creative product, then so should they: they created it for you.

SAG is an idiot, who have fucked up this negotiation beyond all reason, but that doesn't mean that their demands are wrong. The free clip clause that AFTRA agreed to is a terrible mistake. But we all know that there's not going to be a strike. SAG hasn't called for a strike vote because they are afraid they won't get it, and the producers won't lock them out because they don't want to galvanize the guild (this last bit from today's Hollywood Reporter). A few things are for sure: they'd best just cut their losses or this will really get stupid; SAG's West Coast (non)leadership has to go; SAG and AFTRA have to get their shit back together; and then maybe they will have a better shot in three years. Oh, yes, and blow me, you nasty piece of shit.
