I'm a huge fan of Cronenberg's version of THE FLY, it was the one movie that truly scared the shit out of me when I was a kid, and I love the idea of taking this concept and having it evolve into a musical. From what I read it sounds like they kept a majority of the movie's story intact, I'm curious to see how they handle the special effects and the actual music for this project.
I'm sure Shore's score is sensational......

of a big fat snobby woman during the frontal nudity scene blurting out 'EGAD!!' then passing out, the girth of her body still holding her head safely in place, while her opera glasses stumble to floor of the balcony, illiciting shushes from the dark depths of the audience below. While backstage, Cronenberg gently taps his upper lip through a thin smile, wondering if the woman may have also defecated. 'yes' he reassures himself, 'I'm certain she did'.

...after spending all the time, money and thought about the opera, you think this nerd would know that the book was written by David Henry Hwang, not Shore nor Cronenberg.

I didn't put Hwang into the review as A) I'm not familiar with his work and could not have written something substantial about his involvement and B) I consider this opera as team work. Of course the libretto was written by Hwang, but so was the orchester conducted by Placido Domingo and the singers were also some big stars (but that's were I'm completely lost, as I am not an opera fan in general). However, the name on the poster regarding the music was Shore's, so I abbreviated that, just the way I would do when talking about a movie as a Cronenberg film, while it was actually the offspring of a whole armada of creative people. No offense.
Great article, thanks for the info

German Institute For Psychotronic Studies: This was thoughtful, informative, and well-written. I wish all AICN contributors from the top down gave their submissions this level of care before clicking "send".

To AICN: I especially like reports about this sort of wacky, non-mainstream news from around the globe - this beats the hell out of, say, a 7th post-release review of HANCOCK or something else that anyone can check out at will. Dig up more of this type of "I had no idea" stuff.

All in all, thanks a lot, German Institute For Psychotronic Studies.

Just saw a trailer for the new Kelsey Grammer School movie Swing Vote and I totally thought it was a real commercial for some political campaign.

Anyways this Fly Opera sounds really cool. Good to see Dave is back to doing interesting things again, I haven't cared for crap like History of Violence and History of Violence 2: Russian, nor Spider or Exesteinz. Between this and the Jerry Springer opera, whats the deal with opera people making cool sounding opera's? I haven't been this excited for an opera since I first heard about Carmen.

Then what the fuck was he watching when he did the commentary for the 2-disc DVD that came out three years ago? His masterful performances in Nightbreed and Jason X? Sorry, but I fucking hate it when these artsy cocksmokers try to act like they're too good to re-visit their past works. You mean to tell me he didn't do ANY research when working with Shore on this "opera"? What a load of horseshit. Don't get me wrong... the guy is wicked talented and I own just about every one of his films on DVD. I just hate it when creative people, especially WRITERS, who spent a good portion of their time in the midst of creating a work, only to many years later act as if they vaguely remember doing so. Just stinks of pretentious (and I so hate that fucking term, but it applies here) shit. Forgive me.

Mullah: Thanks, you're welcome! RawShark: To be precise, I was a tired as hell non-native speaker while writing this. Some chronically spelling errors come back in this state of mind. For those who would like to listen to Cronenberg's presentation from Thursday, I uploaded the movie I made with my cell phone. Picture quality is bad, but the sound is quite okay. You hit the nail on the head. I also thought of the commentary track, which was great btw, Cronenberg recorded for the dvd when reading that intro. You're right when you say he's pretentious.
